City of Abbotsford, under the leadership of Mayor Banman, is proud to be named the Healthiest Community in the 2012 Healthy Community Challenge. City of Abbotsford and Healthy Abbotsford collaboratively worked together to become the healthiest community in British Columbia by being physically active, eating healthy and decreasing tobacco use. Residents participated in the FREE 90-Day 2012 Healthy Community Challenge from March 10 - June 9, 2012 and logged over 516 points. Congratulations to the residents of Abbotsford who received an overwhelming first place finish over Surrey, Langley and Coquitlam. Parks, Recreation & Culture Department works continuously to ensure residents of all ages have considerable opportunities to be physically active. We provide our community with innovative low cost options and participation incentive challenges such as the Healthy Community Challenge. Our network of parkland and trails play a significant role in supporting the community’s access for a healthy and active lifestyle.

Message from the Chair

Council

We love summer, don’t we? And this summer was no exception. On behalf of the City of Abbotsford and the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Commission I would like to say thank you to all of our staff who worked so hard to make this summer remarkable. Thank you! We love the changing seasons too, don’t we? And now that September is upon us it is time to refocus our attention and redirect our energies towards those activities that will help keep us fit and inspire us. This program guide contains a myriad of activities for community members of all ages and abilities. There are things to do as a family, with friends, or as an individual. The opportunities to acquire new skills and meet new people abound. Maybe this is the year to try Tai Chi or Pickleball, or develop your own exercise regime using one of the recreation centre weight rooms, or pool programs. Don’t miss the chance (while the weather is nice) to get out and enjoy some of the beautiful scenery along Discovery Trail or at one of our community parks. This guide has ideas and information about all sorts of things - take the time to read it through and see what new opportunity catches your eye. We live in a great community, we love the beauty all around us, and we hope you will join us!

PRESCHOOL

Early Exploration! Eyes open wide - where to begin? Laughter, chatter, wind rushing past as wheels usher other children by. The gym is alight with round faces, glowing red from the exertion of playing with one another.

explore, p ABC’s & 123’s Preschool (3yrs - 5yrs)

To the left sits a simple table of colouring pages, different from the collection of pages brought home last week. Just beyond towers the jovial bouncy castle, filled with a rotation of children swooping down the slide and shuffling their way back inside the magical castle. Too little time for learning, there is fun to be had, crafts and books, puzzles and play dough! There are so many fun programs offered at Parks Recreation and Culture that allow preschoolers to be free. Free to spin and laugh, paint and scribble and make long lasting friendships with teachers and peers. Our preschool programs promote children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth, and encourage children to express themselves through creativity and imagination in individual and group settings.

22 PRESCHOOL www.abbotsford.ca/prc

Our preschool program will provide opportunities for your child to grow socially, physically and intellectually through our play based model. Each day will include gym activities, creative exploration, crafts and circle time. Monthly themes will be incorporated into activity schedules. See page 24 for more information. Aiden has been a part of the ABC’s & 123’s program since September. He quickly took to the class and looks forward to going to school. He loves learning songs and stories in circle time and then sharing them with his little brother at home. The teachers are always smiling and the kids have a great time playing and singing. Sending Aiden to preschool has also helped with his speech. I love seeing his crafts and hearing all about his day on our drive home.

I grew up wanting to be a teacher. I love working with children because they are full of curiosity and they love to learn. I find it fulfilling to be a part of children’s early development. I graduated with my ECE Certificate in 2010 and having been working with children at ARC ever since. I see working in the ABC’s & 123’s program as a great way to continue helping children find their potential and their importance in this world.

CHILDREN & YOUTH

The Fundamentals of Play Remember when you were a child spending tireless hours riding bikes with friends or playing road hockey in the cul-de-sac with your goalie gear and all! Or how about building that crazy fort with mom’s sheets, pillows and anything else you could get your hands on! At any age, play sparks imagination, laughter, friendships and physical and mental activity. These are the fundamentals of well-being and personal development. At Abbotsford Parks, Recreation & Culture, our children and youth programs promote the holistic development of a child. Rather than specializing in specific skills at an early age, our programs encourage social, physical, and mental development to help nature well-rounded and successful individuals. Throughout our children and youth section, you will find a variety of activities for all interests, ages, and abilities. We believe every child has the right to an active and healthy lifestyle.

We look forward to playing with you soon! 32 CHILDREN & YOUTH www.abbotsford.ca/prc

live, la Fighting the obesity epidemic starts with educating children and youth about healthy choices and nutrition. AEP and ARC offers programs such as Healthy Snacks for Kids and Kid Chefs that teach the fundamentals of food safety and preparation as well as having fun while learning why eating healthy is an important aspect in growth and development.

e, laugh, smile, grow Michelle took the Kid Chefs program and had a lot of fun in it! She learned how to make easy treats like muffins and cupcakes. At home she’s been asking to help out in the kitchen. Sarah and Kid Chefs have showed her that cooking can be fun!

Kids Chef is a great program for children because it focuses on many different developmental areas. The program allows children to learn about kitchen safety and using proper measurements, team building, leadership, responsibility and creativity. Children learn how to prepare quick and easy recipes that they are able to do after school. I love teaching it because I love cooking myself and I see how children want the independence in the kitchen. When children finish a recipe you can tell they feel proud about what they have accomplished and being a part of that is fulfilling.

The anticipation of starting a new fitness class invokes a mixture of excitement and nerves. Whether it’s a cycle class, aquafit, or boot camp the first class can be awkward and strange. But you know that getting active is great for your physical, mental and emotional well being.

A fitness routine takes time to become routine, try not to let work, children, or chores push your Fit Goals to the side. It is so important to take some time for yourself and try something new that refreshes YOU! Imagine being part of a class where you are not only challenged physically but you make some really great new friends: friends with similar interests as you, and friends who share your passion for being healthy and active! In the meantime your family and friends begin to notice that your self esteem and confidence has lifted. Your spirit is renewed and the dinner time conversation is now full of weekly fitness reports. You discover that following an active and healthy lifestyle has enriched your personal, social and family life.

e, be fit “

I work out five days per week two days in the water and three in the weight room. It is the help I have received from instructors that has kept me motivated all these years. My instructors have taken an interest in me and tailored programs to suit my needs and capabilities. I will soon be 80 years young - I feel great.

- June Participant

I have been teaching fitness classes in one form or another since 1991. As a member of this community family I have seen many of our members transform themselves into being fit for life. We inspire, encourage and educate each other to be better at whatever and wherever we are in our fitness goals. This is my favourite part of our fitness family learning, supporting and achieving our goals together.

Park Development Discovery Trail This trail was constructed through City of Abbotsford partnerships with Provincial Local Motion, Abbotsford Community Foundation Infrastructure stimulus and TransCanada Trail grants as well as generous community donations. It is available to use by all ages to walk, roller blade, bicycle and explore. SECTION 1: Gardner Park to Exhibition Park Section 1 of Discovery Trail is a 8 km length of trail connecting Gardner, Fishtrap Creek, MacLure, Clearbrook, and Exhibition Parks, with loop trails at either extremity of the trail section. This trail section involved upgrading the existing trail systems and the connecting of established parks. SECTION 2: Exhibition Park to Valley & Clearbrook Road to Homestead Park Section 2 is an 8.5 km length of trail connecting: Exhibition Park, Gladwin Park, Old Riverside Park, Valley Road and Clearbrook Park with Homestead Park. The 6 km Old Riverside Park to Valley Road portion required the construction of a new trail and a boardwalk through wetlands, some of which will follow the BC Hydro power line corridor. The 2.5 km Clearbrook to Homestead portion is also a new trail that runs through a wooded tranquil area of our city. SECTION 3: Hazelwood Cemetery to Lower Sumas Mountain Park Section 3 is a 5.5 km new trail connecting Hazelwood Cemetery, Plaza of Community Champions, Immel Park, Cassiar Park and Lower Sumas Mountain Park. The new trail passes under Whatcom Road via a lit concrete tunnel. SECTION 4: Lower Sumas Mountain Park to McKay Creek Trail Section 4 is a 5.5 km trail. It consists of upgrading portions of the existing trail as well as some new construction in Lower Sumas Mt. Park. The trail follows Walter Road and then on to Lower Sumas Mountain Road to connect with Atkinson Road and McKay Creek Trail. SECTION 5: Wilband Creek Park to Beharrel Road Section 5 is a 5.5 km trail connecting Wilband Creek Park with the TransCanada Trail on Beharrel Road passing through historical Clayburn Village.

Park Programs

Parks Information

Parks Gift Program

Waste Receptacles

What is the parks gift program? The parks gift program has been developed to allow citizens, community groups and businesses to donate gifts to the City of Abbotsford for the enhancement of public parks and recreation facilities.

Doing your part to keep parks and trails clean ensures that everyone can enjoy them! Please pick up your garbage and dog waste and dispose of it in an appropriate waste receptacle. If you see any problems in a park or trail, please call the Parks, Recreation & Culture Office at 604.859.3134.

When can I apply to contribute a gift? Applications are accepted year round. Planting trees and shrubs may be delayed until an appropriate time of the year to ensure survival. Benches, picnic tables and similar gifts are ordered immediately upon receipt of payment and are installed upon receipt from the manufacturer.

Dog Off-Leash Parks

Where will my contribution be placed? Donors can work with our Parks staff to ensure that the gift is appropriate for the location requested. What will I receive in recognition of my contribution? All donations in excess of $1,000 will receive a bronze plaque inscribed with a message. Messages can be a maximum of 70 characters and plaques will be installed on, or next to your gift. Donations greater than $15,000 can be recognized with a plaque unveiling at a special event.

A dog off-leash area is a place where pet owners can take their dogs to run free without a leash. Off-leash does not mean “out of control”. Pet owners must ensure that their dogs are controlled and not violent or aggressive. Pet owners must also be on-site for the duration of the visit and have a leash visible. Dogs must be leashed in all parks except in the designated off-leash areas in Gladwin Park, Stoney Creek Trail Park and on Sumas Canal Dyke Trail and McKay Creek Trail. The dog off-leash parks are not fenced. Park users at these locations are cautioned that they may encounter off-leash dogs. Dogs, however, must be under the control of their owners at all times. Even well trained dogs can frighten or injure park visitors and wildlife. Please keep your dog from disturbing wildlife, streams and natural vegetation.

Ducks and Geese Cost Sharing of Private Fencing As a “Good Neighbour”, the City of Abbotsford will consider cost sharing the installation of fences constructed on residential properties shared with city parks and / or pedestrian walkways. For more information, contact the Abbotsford Parks, Recreation & Culture Office at 604.859.3134.

Please do not feed the geese and ducks. While it is enjoyable to feed waterfowl, it is also detrimental to them and to our environment. Feeding waterfowl creates numerous problems such as: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to extremely large concentrations of birds - overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population. • Destroys the birds’ ability to forage and find food for themselves. • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients and can cause serious digestive problems. • Attracts rats and other vermin due to the large amount of food scraps in the area. • Reduces usable areas for people due to large amounts of feces and potentially aggressive geese. • Causes costly efforts to keep our parklands usable and clean and to manage the ever-increasing numbers of waterfowl. Please help us to manage these large waterfowl populations by allowing the birds to feed themselves. Remember, real geese do not eat bread.

, splash, play, enjoy “

Our family has found private swim lessons to be a very valuable opportunity for all three of our children. Our five year old daughter had a tough time staying focused in group lessons. Private swim lessons provided an opportunity to help her stay focused and had a huge impact in strengthening her swim skills and building her competence in deep water. We love that private swim lessons give our kids the skills and confidence to be safe and successful in the pool. - Jennifer T Participant

This is my 6th year as a swimming instructor for Abbotsford PRC. I focus exclusively on private lessons and find it ideal for my teaching style. The one-on-one lessons allow me to provide a high standard of instruction and concentrate on the individual needs of the swimmer. The end result is a sense of accomplishment for both the student and me.

ADVANCED LIFEGUARD TRAINING

WANT TO HELP OTHERS AND STAY FIT? BECOME A LIFEGUARD!

In Order to Become a Life Guard: Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion includes the CPR-A certification. Prerequisite 13 or Bronze Star.

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the pre-requisite awards for all advanced Lifeguarding and Leadership training programs. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits. Prerequisite Bronze Medallion. The National Lifeguard Service® (NLS) award builds on the skills, knowledge and values that the Lifesaving Society teaches in its Canadian Swim Patrol, Jr. Lifeguard Clubs and Bronze Medal awards to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. NLS pool option trains lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a pool environment. Prerequisite 16, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid. If you are interested in becoming a Swim Instructor: Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) Must be 15 years old. Course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progression, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Must be 15 years old. Must have completed AWSI. This course further develops instructional abilities by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum. Candidates will also apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours of practical teaching experience.

SKATING

Grab a friend, bring your skates and head out on the ice! Skating is a fantastic activity to broaden your skill set, free your mind and bring out the kid inside each of us. Whether it’s taking part in skating lessons, bringing the family to public skating or playing with pucks during stick and puck sessions, skating activities are great physical exercise and will provide you with moments to cherish forever. Register your child for one of our learn to skate programs and watch as they transform from the first tentative steps to a confident, capable skater. Before you know it, they’ll be flying around the ice full of smiles and giggles. Our skate lessons provide a great introduction to skating for beginners and progressive levels to allow skill development as the skater improves. If you’re looking ahead to your child playing minor hockey, joining figure skating or speed skating, we’ll help your child get a head start and learn the basic skills needed to enjoy a lifetime on the ice.

My son participated in the Arctic Seal program for his first skating lessons. In my opinion it is an excellent program with great instructors. My son is very shy, the instructor was very patient which helped him learn a lot. I will continue to put him in the learn to skate program.

- Krystal Parent

I love teaching the skate lessons for the City of Abbotsford. I enjoy watching the kids develop throughout the lesson set and the smiles on their faces because of their accomplishments. The team of instructors are all wonderful and each have different styles of teaching.
