Getting on the Olympic Pathway Olympians Train with Oval High Performance Team

P

articipating in an Olympic Games might be the highlight of an athlete’s career. Being on the world’s biggest sporting stage and competing against the world’s top athletes is what every elite athlete dreams of. But the journey to the Games is not easy, it takes years of dedication and a continued focus on training.

Thirty-six of Canada’s top athletes have been training at the Richmond Olympic Oval ahead of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in London, with the hope that hard work behind the scenes will translate into Olympic success.

“For me this is absolutely the best facility I have ever trained at,” says Christine Sinclair, captain of Canada’s Olympic Women’s Soccer team, the majority of which trained with the Oval’s High Performance team leading up to the Olympics.

In addition to the Performance Training Centre and best-of-class coaches and instructors, the Oval’s comprehensive training plan includes a focus on postworkout treatment.

“A big thing for us is recovery,” says Sinclair. “As soon as we work out, they have … anything we need so that we’re as close to 100-percent for our next session.”

Also training at the Oval – preparing to compete in front of the globe – are many of Canada’s Paralympians, who are combining the Oval’s accessibility and ease of use with its commitment to high performance.

“During the week you’ll see anyone from rugby, to tennis, to basketball, to track even and it’s all under one roof,” explains Trevor Hirschfield, a member of the Canadian Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team. “It’s allowed me to just grow as an athlete.”

That’s part of the goal for the Oval’s High Performance team; seeing athletes take their levels of competition and ability higher.

“The ability to contribute to podium success at an international level is very rewarding to our team of coaches,” says program manager, Andrew Clark. “These athletes are all great role models and provide inspiration to the aspiring youth athletes who watch them train at the Oval.”

The athletes themselves are motivated by the results they see.

“I’ve noticed big steps and big strides since training at the Oval with a group of guys on the National Team,” says Hirschfield, who moved from Vancouver Island to train with his teammates at the Oval.

“It has absolutely everything we need as a team,” says Sinclair. “The gym itself is amazing and the trainers here are great.”

And the hope is – Sinclair, Hirschfield and the rest of the 36 Oval trained and London bound Olympians and Paralympians – are great too this summer in London.

BALANCE YOUR BODY THIS SUMMER There’s no better way to focus on your entire body than with the Oval’s Pilates Reformer class. This full-body workout balances the body through breathing, proper alignment, core stabilization and muscular endurance training. Small groups of up to 5 receive personalized attention. Private one-on-one instruction is also available.
