All aboard for Nautical Days fun Black Press Pirates, sinking ships, and a contest to see who can catch the biggest fish are just a glimpse into the fun at the 54th annual Nautical Days festival.

The festival, headquartered at Marina Park in Comox, will span the B.C. Day long weekend (Aug. 4 to 6) and will feature a slew of time-honoured acts and events sure to please crowds of kids and adults.

Saturday morning will begin with a Strathcona Sunrise Rotary pancake breakfast, featuring live entertainment by Rob Petrie. Festival-goers can afterwards try their luck competing in one of several categories at the 26th annual Bullhead Derby — the Pacific Northwest’s largest catch-andrelease fishing derby.

The annual Kids’ Festival begins at 10

a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. with a pet parade; Youngsters can build crafts, hop on the Bounce Mania, have their faces painted, or brave numerous carnival rides, among other activities.

Adults are also entitled to their fun at a centrally-located, bistro-style garden termed Tavern on the Green, open each day.

A jazz ensemble will provide the afternoon’s entertainment.

Once the Kids’ Festival winds down, competition will heat up as two-man teams prepare for a canoejousting competition presented by the Flying Canoe West Coast Pub — the last man standing wins!

Folks of all ages are then invited to a live performance at Captain Cracker’s Family Dance, the final event of the night.

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The fishing has been getting better in the past week or so and anglers are getting springs anywhere from 15 to 28 pounds, a few Tyee have also been caught.

The Hump, Shelter Point to Bates Beach, has been productive. Smaller halibut are still coming in from the Hump. Dean Rusinek fished Nootka Sound and had good success for springs and no Halibut.

Inside fishing is picking up with the arrival of early mature Conuma, Burman and Gold River fish starting to arrive from the outside. The outside fishing at Bajo reef is steady with smaller feeder springs averaging 16 to 25 pounds.

The Tyee Cub in Kevin Georgy Campbell River is open and the anglers and rowers are getting set for another season in hopes of catching a Tyee. The clubhouse is open to the public and this is a great spot to talk to the anglers and get fishing information on a daily basis.

With the hot weather we have been enjoying, trout fishing is most productive in the early morning hours or late evening. The Pinks have arrived in small numbers in the Campbell River; limit is 4 per fish per day. You can spin cast or fly fish for pinks and last year I hooked into a few springs and the fight was on.

This time of year the community will be busy with anglers fishing from the pier and the shoreline from Campbell River to the Oyster River. A popular fly is anything pink, blue or green. I tie a fly about a number 6 or 8 with a green head and pheasant body; this fly works well in saltwater.

Terry and Kirsten Elliott retraced their first days together on their 10th wedding anniversary.

Terry and Kirsten Elliott of Errington, B.C. originally met on a tour of Kyuquot aboard the MV Uchuck III – a 136’ working vessel that transports passengers and cargo to remote villages on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Fifteen years later, the Elliotts have returned to Kyuquot on a complimentary cruise to retrace their first days together and to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

Like the historic villages on Vancouver Island’s West Coast, the couple’s love story began with an introduction of different cultures.

She was exploring the remote areas and the two struck up a conversation, not a hard thing to do when you’re sharing the breathtaking views of the West Coast.

A few hours later, the Uchuck III docked in Gold River; the two said goodbye and went their separate ways. Two days later, as Kirsten was coming out of a restaurant in Qualicum Beach, she heard the horn of a truck in traffic and realized that the driver was trying to get her

attention.

It was Terry, who happened to recognize her, and the two went out for coffee. A plan was made to do some sight-seeing together before she returned to Germany.

The forest sanctuary of the Carmanah Valley, which is considered to be among the most remarkable wild places on Vancouver Island, seemed like the perfect place for a wilderness tour guide to take a European tourist who wanted to see beyond the usual tourist areas.

preparing to leave for Germany, Terry made a special trip to Victoria to say goodbye to her.

Over the next five years, Terry and Kirsten saw each other once a year.

Kirsten would return to Canada for a visit, or Terry would go to

Germany to visit, and they got to know each other better.

From Page 5 their married life building their home in the Vancouver Island community of Errington, they decided to take their first official vacation aboard the Uchuck III as a couple. When they called Get West Adventure Cruises to make the arrangements, they were thrilled to learn that their tour aboard the Uchuck III would be complimentary.

“It was the most wonderful weekend we could have asked for,” says Terry. “The crew on the Uchuck was fantastic, the weather was absolutely perfect, and the scenery was just beautiful.”

The Elliotts boarded the Uchuck III from Gold River and travelled back to the village of Kyuquot where they’d first met. They enjoyed a special cake that had been prepared in their honour, and were provided with accommodations for the night at the Kyuquot Inn. “What we love most about this trip is that the Uchuck III is still a working vessel,” says Kirsten. “There is no rush; you just enjoy

the day as it happens.

We had an unexpected delay in the Village of Esperanza, so I spent some time talking to some other women on the dock, enjoying the sunshine, and the beauty of the area.

There was a small store there, and they opened it up for us so that we could browse while we were waiting.”

Commenting on the changes in the area since their original visit to Kyuquot Terry notes, “Areas of the West Coast that had been logged back in 1997 were fresh and very evident at the time. Now the logging operations are further inland, and those shore line areas have had some time for regrowth so the view is much greener than it was back then.

“We also noticed the addition of electricity, and the fish farms that weren’t there before.”

Kirsten, who enjoys taking detailed photos of nature, has taken home many new images from the trip that will remind her of the spacious feeling on board, when there is “absolutely nothing between you and Japan.”

Added to her souvenir collection is an anniversary card signed by the Uchuck crew, a copy of the local paper “The Nootka Sounder”, her Get West Adventure Cruises T-shirt, and the Uchuck III mug which she still keeps from their original trip in 1997.

“It is such a beautiful place, and both Terry and I believe in leaving as small a carbon footprint as possible,” says Kirsten. “It’s wonderful that the Uchuck III makes viewing these areas accessible to people who may not be able or ready to hike through the woods or paddle a kayak all day.” For those who do enjoy a more rigorous wilderness get away, the Uchuck III transports them too, and as Terry and Kirsten Elliott can tell you, a trip aboard may just be the beginning of a whole new adventure.

forms and mediums as well.

The three-day workshop, August 10-12, covers the various aspects of dye making from natural sources, primarily local plants, and their use in the fabric arts. Students will learn to safely identify and harvest dye plants; how to prepare the fibre; maintaining dye baths and the use of colour fixing mordants; different dyes

from various latitudes and ways to alter dye colours; the use of dyes on eggs and other materials, and how to care for naturally dyed fabrics.

While the dye processes take place, there will be time to enjoy creating original artwork from natural sources and inspirations. Sketching, printmaking, natural stencils and 3D art forms

will all be explored.

Students should come prepared with rain and sun gear, good walking shoes, water bottle, sketchbook and note taking paper, pens and pencils, and one piece of natural fibre cloth or clothing that they may want to dye. If you have pastels, pencil crayons and paints, bring them along to enhance your creative flow. While most dye-

making supplies will be provided, Orlowski requests those who would like to come start saving onion skins now to contribute to a dye bath. Englewood run a favourite for ‘speeders’ J.R. Rardon Black Press BEAVER COVE—Members of the Motor Operators West railroad motorcar club gather to tour their “speeder” cars on tracks throughout North America. But they admit their visits to the Englewood Railroad on North Vancouver Island have become a particular favourite.

“This really is an adventure experience,” said Carol Balestreri of Sacramento, Calif.

“How often do you get to go on an active logging line?”

The North Island tour is run with the cooperation of Western Forest Products, and has become essentially an annual event for Motor Operators West, which includes members from Canada

and the U.S. The tour begins in the Beaver Cove dryland log sorting yard, quite literally the end of the track on Vancouver Island, and takes the speeders through the Nimpkish Valley.

“This is their third year in a row here,” WFP railway supervisor Randy Hunt said as he watched club members load the little rail cars onto the track Friday evening in preparation for departure early Saturday morning.

“Before that, it had been a few years since they’d been here. But it looks like they’re making it a regular trip.”

The speeder tour of the Island included a run over the historic Port Alberni sub line, and wrapped up with a run from Chemainus over the Southern

Vancouver Island Railroad to Humpback Road, just north of Victoria.

“We’ll go wherever the railroads will let us run,” said Balesteri.

“We do a lot of trips on little, short lines and privately-owned railroads.”

The club’s next trip is an excursion along the scenic Grand Canyon Railway in Arizona this fall.

Motor Operators West is a club dedicated to the restoration and safe, legal operation of rail motorcars.

The little rail cars are mostly fourwheeled vehicles, powered by gas or diesel engines. Of the more than 20 speeders that departed from Beaver Cove Saturday were basic, unadorned two-seater models to fully-outfitted and restored four-seat
