Family rescued from sinking boat Renée Andor

Five runners from the Comox Valley competed July 14 in the KneeKnackering North Shore Trail Race from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove. Dubbed the gnarliest 30-mile race in Canada, the technical course incorporates 16,000 feet of elevation change and includes a climb to the top of Black Mountain, which has an elevation of 4,000 feet. Registration for the popular race is done by lottery, with about 200 people selected each year.

Although a family of five lost their new-to-them boat off Denman Island Saturday, the Comox Valley Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue station leader said they’re lucky it sank where it did. According to RCM-SAR station leader Jim Linderbeck, the family, from Barkley Sound near Ucluelet, had just purchased the older 50-foot wooden fishing vessel in Comox hours before it sank off the northeast side of Denman Island on Saturday evening.
