International co-operation limits flood damage in Kootenays

“In the 12 years I have been involved with the Columbia River Treaty (an agreement to manage the resource) I have never seen the co-ordination and co-operation from both sides of the border concerning reaction to flows and information as took place during the last three weeks,” Kettle said.

The Creston Valley connection to the Columbia River is the Kootenay River, whose headwaters are in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. The Kootenay (Kootenai in the U.S.) flows south into Montana and Idaho, then returns north to re-enter Canada near the Rykerts border crossing. It empties into the Columbia River at Castlegar. Along its way, the Kootenay fills the Koocanusa reservoir and Kootenay Lake in Canada and Libby Dam in the U.S. Kettle said that careful management of water flow, especially at Libby Dam, was needed to protect property.

Corps to Capt. Bryanne Materi. With Lt.-Col. Kirk Jones, commanding officer of 39 Service Battalion and retired lt.-col. Phillip Sherwin joining over 80 members of the community in attendance, the parade celebrated the service of Jones to the corps over the last two years, and welcomed Materi to the corps and regimental family.

Materi is a newcomer to Victoria, after having grown up in Creston. She started working with the 3005 Army Cadet Corps in April 2012.

“It’s going to be a fantastic year ahead,” said the newly minted commanding officer, who works as a geography laboratory technician at Camosun College. “We’ve already made plans for canoe trips, winter survival weekends, as well as leadership opportunities for the senior cadets. … There is so much support from 11 Service Battalion, our affiliated unit, as well as the community — we have a great team.”

Materi was a cadet in Creston with 1746 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps from 1997-2003.

She completed her bachelor of arts degree and followed up with a bachelor of education degree from the University of British Columbia Okanagan.

Royal Canadian Army Cadets is a national youth organization jointly sponsored by the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces and the civilian Army Cadet League of Canada, and encourages leadership and citizenship, physical fitness, and an interest in the land forces activities of the Canadian Forces primarily by outdoor activities. Town to offer Local arm rebate on low wrestlers flush toilets place in

Creston residents will soon get a break when they switch to low flush toilets to reduce water consumption.

Water Smart ambassador Claire Schadeli reported at the July 10 regular town council meeting that a toilet replacement program will be instituted. The Water Smart program is a partnership that includes the Town of Creston, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Columbia Basin Trust.

Details of the low flush toilet rebate plan will be announced later this summer.

Council Briefs •Mayor Ron Toyota thanked Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church pastor Carl Sawler for his contributions to the community. Sawler, who attended the meeting to deliver the ministerial invocation, is retiring from this position.

•Creston Fire Rescue Chief Bruce Mabin was presented with a fire investigator certificate in the National Qualifications System. His training now allows him to conduct formal investigations into fires in Canada.

•A $250 donation to the Cops for Kids charitable foundation was approved, with money to come from the mayor’s discretionary fund. Toyota has been a regular fundraiser for the foundation when RCMP cyclists tour southeast B.C. to raise money and awareness for the foundation each fall.

•A letter from resident Michael Bunn, who chastised the town for paying for the advertising costs of a $1 annual land lease, will get a positive response. Couns. Gerry Schmalz and Scott Veitch led the discussion in agreeing with Bunn that people leasing small portions of town land should have to pay the advertising costs.

•The town will donate four shirts to the Creston Valley Rotary Club for the club’s annual Drive Fore Rotary golf tournament.

•A private donor is providing a bench to be placed on Cavell Street near Crestview Village.

•A letter of support will be sent for the City of Fort St. John’s efforts to encourage the federal government to continue funding infrastructure projects.

•Council voted to have staff proceed with the investigation and implementation of a plan that will allow councilors to participate in council meetings via electronic means. It will be stipulated that a majority of councilors will be required to attend in person in order to constitute a quorum.

Two Creston Valley arm wrestlers placed in the Canadian Arm Wrestling Federation championships on July 1, when Adam Koenig earned third place with both arms in the 75 kg category, and Darryl Johnson did the same in the 65 kg category.

It was Koenig’s second time at the nationals, having competed without placing in 2010, and his skill kept him on a track that made his victory over multiple-time national champion Perry Bruhm a bit easier.

“It was kind of a surprise,” said Koenig. “I got a really good draw, and I was able to stay on the A side so I didn’t have to pull as much. … I was really calm and very focused, and in the right headspace.”

About eight arm wrestlers have been meeting regularly in the valley for a couple of years, and Koenig, the Creston director for the BC Armwrestling Association, feels that other locals could have placed if they’d been able to attend, a testament to the effort they put in.

“It’s something you have to work really hard at as a hobby,” said Koenig.

Kettle said the co-operation extended even further when an old mine tailing pond near Salmo threatened to breach in the last few weeks. A huge pumping effort was undertaken to empty the pond before its walls collapsed and allowed the water to enter the Kootenay River, whose waters eventually supply Spokane with drinking water.

“I called (Kootenay East MLA) Bill Bennett when I learned that a problem had been identified,” he said. “Bill Bennett got everybody out of bed — cabinet ministers and Premier Christy Clark included — and told them that we

Dozens of RDCK staff and contractors, and Cominco engineers, too, worked round the clock for a week until the situation stabilized.

The tailing pond base, Kettle said, holds 15 feet of contaminants that began amassing more than a century ago from the nearby mining operation.

“It contains chromates and alkalis and arsenic — we don’t even know what all was put in there over the years,” he said.

As chair of the RDCK, Kettle declared at least 10 emergency orders throughout the regional district to deal with the effects of high waters and floods in the last month.

Ontario man rescued from Goat River

An Ontario male narrowly avoided a tragic fate when he was swept into the Goat River current near Canyon-Lister Road on Sunday.

He managed to pull himself onto a ledge and await a high-line rescue by Canyon-Lister Fire Department volunteers.

“He was extremely lucky,” Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said. “No one should be getting close to local rivers with the high waters continuing as they are.”

The rescue was made more challenging when two males at the scene confronted police officers, challenging them to fight and refusing to leave the site when requested. The males did not want the rescuers on the property, Gollan said. The pair could face obstruction charges.

Wynndel female recovering after being run over in her yard

A 22-year-old female is recovering from injuries sustained when she was driven over by a pickup truck in her yard in Wynndel on July 9.

Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday that the woman suffered a broken hip, and collarbone and back injuries. She was flown to Cranbrook for treatment by helicopter ambulance.

“This was a completely freak accident and no charges will be laid,” Gollan said.

The driver, a construction contractor working at the residence, was leaving the yard when his vehicle went over the woman, who was sunbathing at the time.

“Our members recreated the circumstances of the incident and determined there was no way the driver could have seen the woman, given the terrain and vegetation,” Gollan said. “As you can imagine, the driver is extremely distraught.”

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 81 calls from July 9-15, Gollan said.

•A Kindle and running shoes were stolen from a locked vehicle.

•Inadvertently sending a suggestive photo to an unintended party ended up with the offending female being threatened.

•Two females who got into a consensual fight on the previous weekend at the Canyon-Lister gravel pit were warned about their behavior.

•When police got a complaint about an assault with a weapon from a Seventh Avenue North address, they found the call had been made by an intoxicated female who wanted a sober person removed from the residence.

She said she made up the assault with a weapon story to get a faster response from the police. It worked, but she also spent the night in police cells and was released when sober.

July 11 •A Sanca Creek resident who was selling a property privately got a call from the supposed buyer who said his vehicle had broken down and he needed $800. The resident wired the money and the buyers deny any knowledge of the call.

•Police are attempting to locate a driver who failed to stop for a pedestrian on Canyon Street.

•A semi driver was ticketed for failing to yield when his vehicle collided with a car on Highway 3A. Minor damage was reported.

•A white four-by-four post with a house number was stolen from an Erickson Road residence.

July 12 •A fight between cousins on

Canyon Street and 16th Avenue was reportedly consensual.

•A shoplifter has been banned from a Highway 3A store.

•A Highway 3 resident reported to Osoyoos RCMP that his grey 1988 Chevy Blazer was stolen in Creston two years ago.

•An Erickson Road male complained that his parents wouldn’t provide him with money to buy drugs.

•A resident of the 400 block of Canyon-Lister Road is hoping the owner of five cows roaming the area will round them up and keep them fenced.

•Four youths were reported to be on the Adam Robertson Elementary School roof, “a very unsafe thing to do,” Gollan said.

July 13 •A 25th Avenue South resident complained that a neighbor placed dead birds and cat feces in her yard.

The neighbor said he did so last year, but not this year.

•Anyone with knowledge about someone shooting gophers in the Goat River Road area is asked to contact police. There are many residences in the area and it is illegal to shoot any firearm within 300 yards of a residence.

•A McDonald Road resident complained about a neighbour’s child crying in one of a series of complaints in an ongoing dispute.

•A cellphone call from a lost female in the U.S. was transferred to Bonners Ferry police.

•About 100 vehicles were stopped in a roadside check on Canyon Street at Pine Street. One impaired driver was issued a 90-driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Two tickets were issued for open liquor in a vehicle, a small amount of marijuana was seized and one seatbelt warning was given.

July 14 •The traffic lights on Highway 3 at the bridge repair site near West Creston were reported to be not working.

•A motorcycle driver sustained minor injuries when he collided with a deer on Highway 3A near Kootenay Bay. •An erratic driver stopped on Highway 21 was found to be intoxicated. His licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. He was held in police cells and released when sober.

July 15 •Two siblings in a dispute about a Canyon-Lister Road property inheritance were informed the issue was civil, not criminal.

•A break and entry to a Ninth Avenue residence, while the resident was home, netted a thief a bag of clothing, an LG cellphone and an Xbox connection cord.

At the age of 25, in Couer d’Alene to visit an old friend who had become a Coors distributor, Kettle took advantage of his proximity to Canada to come north to Kootenay Lake for a holiday, but not before “filling up my car with pizza and winter supplies.”

(It was summer, but Canada was north.)

When a huge clap of thunder startled the dozens attending rain-soaked Canada Day festivities at the community complex this month, it had an even bigger impact on John Kettle. The first instinct of the four-term Regional District of Central Kootenay director was to run for cover.

“I’ve been shot at too many times,” he said, when he regained his composure.

Kettle wasn’t talking about the potshots regularly aimed at elected officials — his reference was to his two tours of duty in Vietnam in 1966-67.

The Texas drawl came later in life. He was born and raised in a public housing project in Denver, Colo.

“I learned to fight when I was pretty young,” he says. “It was a tough area.”

His mom eventually moved her family to the suburbs, where he was “average in academics, because I was lazy.”

Attending the University of Colorado didn’t exactly float his boat, either, so he packed it in to go to work.

He landed a job with Coors Industries, in the public relations department, which led to his first opportunity to visit Canada. He was sent up to explain the effect beverage container taxes were having on the brewing industry.

Coors took a different tactic, voluntarily implementing its own Cash for Cans program and developing an industry-leading recycling program for glass and aluminum. He acted as spokesman for the giant brewery in all matters to do

John Kettle His first stop after crossing the border was at the Sirdar Pub, where he was surprised to find men and women drinking in separate rooms.

“I asked the men how they met women,” he laughs.

He camped at Gray Creek.

“I sat and looked at the lake and the mountains and I thought that I would always come back,” he recalls.

“That was about 40 years ago and I haven’t missed many chances to return.”

With Coors, he eventually became vice-president of Coors Glass, the largest glass plant in the world, producing 1.3 million bottles a day.

In 1974 he accepted a job offer from a persistent entrepreneur in El Paso, Texas.

“I’d never been to Texas and I didn’t want to go, but the offer was too good to resist.”

His job there was to travel as a representative for oil and gas sales, mostly into Mexico.

“Eventually, I started my own company and we (he and his wife, Marilyn) embraced Texas as our own state,” he

says. “Our four kids were born there.”

During a downturn in the economy in the 1970s, Kettle made the decision to move north into Canada “and I’ve never looked back. I decided to chase my dreams instead of chasing the dollar.”

John and Marilyn raised their family on a ranch they had purchased at Meadow Creek, near Yahk. Kettle ran a guide-outfitting business and raised cattle.

“Marilyn and I got involved in community activities and I fell in love with hockey,” he says. “I can organize and I can raise money, so it was a good fit.”

He worked with the NHL hockey hall-of-famer to form the John Bucyk Honour Role “to make sure kids were as good off the ice as they were on.”

In 1996, he became a citizen, and in 2001, with the encouragement of former Nelson-Creston MLA Corky Evans, ran for a director’s position on the Regional District of Central Kootenay board.

“It was a four-man race and I did win, and I’ve been working my butt off ever since, quite frankly,” he says.

In politics, he admits, big wins are rare, “but you keep moving forward for the good of the people.

“If you need thanks for what you do, don’t run for public office. I just try to do the best job I can. You won’t make more friends the longer you are in office, but you will make more enemies. People don’t remember the 19 times out of 20 they were happy with what you did, just the one time that they weren’t. I volunteered for this, though, so I can’t complain.”

Now in his fourth term, and 10th year, of office, Kettle has become a major player on the local political scene.

He chaired the administration and finance committee on the RDCK board before accepting a nomination to run as board chair. He is now serving his second year at the head of the table. And he’s only the second ever Creston Valley resident to assume the chair’s position.

Kettle also made local history by becoming the first ever Creston Valley representative to serve as chair of the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District, which oversees capital spending in the area by the Interior Health Authority.

If Marilyn, his wife of 40 years, worries about seeing too much of her husband, she can relax now that he also has become chair of the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Council, with which Kettle can put his many provincial and federal political connections to good use.

“Even if we lost, the PR for the program was incredible,” said Whiteaway. “It got to people’s hearts. It’s not just one part, it’s the whole community.”

Despite Kimberley’s loss, the publicity generated should go along way to promoting the region as a whole.

“We won the money, but the Kootenays won overall because of the exposure,” said Whiteaway.

Politics at any level, Kettle says, is not for the faint of heart.

On the downside, he says, there are negative impacts on marriages and family life.

“But my guiding principle is to leave it better than we found it,” he says. “If you can do that, you’ve succeeded.”

If there is anything we should be able to agree on this summer it is that we are extremely fortunate to have a remarkable network of ‌ let’s call them professional volunteers in our province. I’m thinking particularly about search and rescue and firefighting teams.

In the police news elsewhere in this issue is a small item about an Ontario man, here apparently in anticipation of the fruit-picking season, being plucked from the steep rock walls beneath CanyonLister Bridge. He had been swept into the still high and rushing Goat River and, luckily, was able to get himself onto a ledge, where he clung until firefighters were able to conduct a high-line rescue.

Facebook friends report that another such rescue was necessary on Monday night.

Making national news has been the horrific slide at Johnson’s Landing, the tiny Kootenay Lake community that has lost four of it’s reported 35 members. Dozens of search and rescue volunteers from around the province swarmed to the scene last week when the emergency call went out. Many stayed even when it was announced that the site had been redesignated as a recovery scene, not a search and rescue operation.

There is no magic in what happens before these volunteer professional men and women arrive at an emergency. Hours and hours and hours of training take place on a regular basis, time stolen from fami-

ly activities and the pursuit of other personal interests.

Several years ago, I was working on a story about air search and rescue and I got a first-hand look

willing to carve time from their busy lives to become an asset to their team of choice.

Locally, I would guess that these volunteers exceed a hundred in number, people who sit through endless meetings and put in classroom time and training sessions that simulate events, all necessary so that when that emergency call comes they are ready and able to contribute.

Another young couple with a threeweek-old baby have a farm. While it wasn’t destroyed directly by the slide, the farm has no water now, as the slide happened in Johnson’s Landing’s water source, Gar Creek. This young family is facing the loss of a year’s income because they can’t work their land right now.

I’ve also been in contact with residents still in Johnson’s Landing. They couldn’t get regularly updated information because the power was out and they didn’t have a battery powered radio. A friend was going over Sunday afternoon, so I arranged to get them a radio.

In such circumstances, you see tremendous grief, sadness and trauma.

You also see a community come together and support each other without question. You see search and rescue professionals and volunteers from all over B.C. leave their families to get on planes and drive all night to help people in our part of the world. Where is the old Canada?

To the Editor: It always warmed my heart every Canada day to see the crowds in Ottawa cheering and waving our beautiful maple leaf flag, expressing their love for Canada. I, too, love my Canada very much.

This year, it is for me a sweet-sour celebration. I am asking Prime Minister Harper, “Where is my Canada?” The highly respected Clayton Moore, CM, QC, said what I also feel, “Canada has become a country that I barely recognize. Since when did this country bully charities, trash environmental laws, thumb its nose at the international community and silence its own citizens?”

Together with the powerful corporate interest, the rich and mighty Harper is making the Canada we know and love unrecognizable — democracy be damned. Harper’s contempt for Parliament, democracy and his rule by ideology cannot go on forever. The government is entrusted to act on behalf of its citizens and every voice should count.

I am one of many Canadians that have experienced dictatorship and am thankful that I could find refuge in this generous country. It is my hope that Canadians will come out of their apathy and complacency and resolve to bring back the Canada we know and love. Canada’s brave soldiers have fought and died to preserve freedom and democracy.

To the Editor: (Open letter to Kootenay-Columbia member of Parliament David Wilks) I was one of the protesters attending the Creston flag raising on July 1. I was surprised to see our flag raised on a derrick mounted on a truck. Perhaps that was because we now have a more American-controlled border, due to Stephen Harper’s cozy relationship with the Americans.

I am referring to the Security and Prosperity Partnership agreement (or whatever it is being called these days to try and throw Canadians off the track). I guess a moveable flag system is a good idea as we become less and less Canadian and more and more under the influence of the Americans and the current Conservative government, which appear to be, at times, one and the same. With the changes to our sovereignty due to Bill C-38, under the guise of security, our borders are now American borders, not Canadian.

should not be considered annexed by it, either bit by bit or all at once.

I wanted to make sure, Mr. Wilks, that you were aware of the words on the banner those of us protesting at the “flag-raising” were carrying, because it was raining heavily and you may not have seen it clearly.

It stated, “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

And why should we align ourselves with Cranbrook when I and many of my acquaintances in this town have more business with Nelson or Sandpoint, both of which use Pacific time?

If we were serious about saving the town money, perhaps we could refrain from resurrecting dead issues and start moving forward with new proposals to enrich the valley.

Home-school remarks Daylight time offend mom not an issue and student

To the Editor: (Re: “Valley should consider time change”, July 5 Advance, page 6) If Coun. Judy Gadicke could change anything in the Creston Valley it would be adopting daylight time?

Instead of working to improve the local economy by bringing business to Creston, Gadicke has revived the groundless argument of saving electricity by moving to daylight time. There are plenty of real issues affecting the citizens of Creston that require council action, so why bring up daylight time?

Broadening our economic base from two or three sawmills and one brewery surely is a more pressing issue than saving some daylight time. How many empty storefronts in the downtown core are required before we see some inventive thinking?

Gadicke claims 25 per cent of a household’s electricity is consumed by lighting and small appliances. But she neglects to tell us how much of that electricity would actually be saved by moving to mountain daylight time (MDT). If the supposed benefit of MDT is to use sunlight to light one’s tasks rather than electrical lighting, I fail to see how using my stove at 6 p.m. rather than 5 p.m. will save any electricity — it is on for 20 minutes every day regardless. In fact, the estimates I’ve found indicate that there are no savings in electrical usage in the real world by moving to daylight time.

There are real world dangers to daylight time, as people in the transportation industry are all too well aware.

Every year when moving forward in the spring, we get one hour less sleep — and automobile accidents rise. We already live in an area where inattention at the wheel can have serious consequences, so why should we increase the odds of an accident? Workers on the Monday following the spring time change also experience an increase in job related injuries.

Gadicke complains of the complications with making appointments elsewhere; however, we live on the border of a time zone and there will always be mental arithmetic involved when crossing to another zone. If we align ourselves with Cranbrook, we’ll be wondering

Rosey (not her real name) came to the Therapeutic Activity Program for Seniors (TAPS) unable to make a decision herself, shy and withdrawn, unable to know what joy felt like, or what it was to feel loved and respected. She had been in a highly abusive relationship for 56 years, locked in her own home surrounded by a tall fence and spiked gate and guarded by a German shepherd trained to be ferocious. She had one pair of shoes and her clothes were in rags while her husband dressed in warm new clothes.

When it was recognized that she had severe hypothyroidism and her health was rapidly going downhill, her daughter managed to get her to a doctor.

However, her husband refused to allow the prescription renewal. It was not until after her husband died, when she was 85 that Rosey’s life began to change.

It took a while to overcome the anger and paranoia built up over that long and soul-destroying marriage. To her great credit, Rosey has now completely changed her view of life.

She lived with her daughter for a while and then moved into her own apartment. Realizing she could buy what she wanted to eat and wear was a novelty.

Then came her introduction to TAPS. At first, she was too afraid to be with all those people. She had had no friends and no social interaction, except under great

duress. She didn’t know what to talk about, how to interact.

Through her bright mind and observation, the caring and support of TAPS staff and members, a new Rosey began to bud.

Wow, interesting last week or two, eh? I suppose the big news was the successful competition in the Kraft Celebration Tour, where the outcome was as it should be and Creston’s Therapeutic Riding Program won the $25,000 prize with a little help from their friends. What good friends too, as they generated over 171,000 votes in 24 hours, and apparently a community barbeque which will be announced in later weeks with all the details. As I have professed before, people that don’t think we have a great community and pull together when needed — time to reevaluate.

Also in the “as it should be” column, soccer camp ran last week down on the Alec Nilsson Field and for as long as I can remember; it is the hottest time of the year. There have been times over the past years where the week might start out in the rain but somewhere along the line it turns smoking hot and kids crowd under the patch of shade from the tent like ants on an orange peel. Everyone has a great time, mind you, but it’s kind of eerie that we can control the weather by the way we program soccer camp.

Today Rosey can’t imagine life without TAPS. She enjoys choosing her own clothes and looking attractive. She has made friends and is always happy to help someone at TAPS. Her warm smile reveals that she is happy and has blossomed into her true self. At 91, she has also discovered the joys of dancing and is a member of the TAPS choir. She recently admitted that she feels she is beginning to enjoy life. On a recent outing in a TAPS bus, she blew kisses to everyone as they climbed on board.

TAPS staff and volunteers have created a centre for nurturing and healing, as well as socializing and providing nutritious meals and activities.

Everyone who comes to TAPS, whatever their background, is enfolded into a loving, caring “family”, and shown dignity and respect, the recipe for heal-

ing and transformation.

Another example of transformation through TAPS involves a gentleman who was non-verbal following a stroke. We will call him Tony, and he was always beaming, even though he had to be helped in many ways. He expressed his appreciation with that wonderful smile and kind eyes. The gentle and caring way everyone is treated at TAPS, helped him retain his dignity and pride.

He gradually became more confident and able to look after himself. It was obvious that he understood well, and in subtle ways would express his opinion. One day, Jill Fehr asked him to dance, and so began another successful venture for him. After a while, he walked over to Jill and asked her with his smiling invitation, to dance with him.

When we feel loved and accepted unconditionally, we feel safe enough to extend our boundaries, act differently without fear of rejection, one of our biggest fears. To see the transformation in seniors, some as old as 90, it becomes clear that no matter how old or how badly we are emotionally, psychologically or physically wounded, a safe and loving environment can help us heal reveal more of our true selves. It is never too late to find out who we really are.

Lower Kootenay Band hosting Ktunaxa AGA and powwow KTUNAXA NATION

You might be noticing a lot of Ktunaxa pride in the Creston area from July 24-26, as the Ktunaxa Nation will be hosting its 34th annual general assembly in Lower Kootenay. The AGA rotates between the Ktunaxa communities, and the

last time it was held in the Lower Kootenay was in 2007. The AGA is a time for Ktunaxa citizens to connect with each other, and learn more about the programs and services available to them through the Ktunaxa Nation council.

There will also be an opportunity for inter-tribal dances, in which non-Ktunaxa guests will be invited to get up and dance as well. “This is a great opportunity to connect with our neighbours who live in Ktunaxa territory,� said Ktunaxa Nation chair Kathryn Teneese. “We welcome you to come to the powwow and learn more about Ktunaxa, and enjoy in the dancing and celebration.�

If memory lane moments are your cup of tea, then the upcoming fundraiser for the A Clear View digital mammography campaign is for you.

Delicate teacups filled with fragrant and tasteful delights of New York’s finest Harney and Sons tea accompanied with finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones topped with mouthwatering jam, ending with an array of lovely desserts will welcome you to the third annual Creston Pink Garden Tea. The Pink Garden Tea was started in 2010 by Debbie Graham to honour two of her family members facing breast cancer.

Graham said that watching their courage and hope encouraged her to create something that

would help other women in Creston battling the illness.

After two successful years and knowing her dream event is helping others, Graham decided to expand the event in support of East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s fundraising drive to bring a digital stereotactic mammography unit to the regional hospital.

“I just love the whole ceremony about traditional teas,” said Graham. “When I combine that with a charitable cause that is going to help many women it makes it all the more special.”

The Pink Garden Tea will have two seatings, one on July 27 at 7 p.m. and the second on July 28 at 2 p.m. Admission is by donation and tea enthusiasts are encouraged to sip and listen to beautiful harp music, to shop at the Tea Market Boutique, to

see Creston artist Laura Leeder paint a special Pink Garden Tea teacup picture (gift cards available) and to visit Creston author Valerie Comer, who will be autographing her latest book.

Also on hand will be Carmen Lancaster, cancer survivor and winner of the quilt of 2011 displaying “the sisterhood of the traveling quilt”, a symbol of hope for many facing a breast cancer diagnosis.

Early registration is welcomed and tables can be reserved in advance by calling Debbie Graham at 250-428-7182 or 250-402-9144, or picking up tickets at Morris Flowers on Canyon Street.

BC Games Siblings ready for Summer Games a start for Olympic athletes

When the Olympic and Paralympic Games begin in London, there are a number of Canadian athletes who will remember their first multisport experience at a BC Games.

Twenty-four athletes on the Canadian Olympic team started their journey to London with a trip to the BC Games, including 2008 Olympic gold medalist Carol Huynh (wrestling) and recent Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (cycling). As part of the athlete development pathway, the BC Games are a first multisport experience for young athletes that lead towards provincial and national teams and ultimately the Olympic or Paralympic Games. The BC Games are part of a strong provincial sports system that provides an outstanding training environment and support services for high performance athletes. Forty per cent of the Canadian Olympic team live or train in B.C. Kamloops shot putter Dylan Armstrong is one of Canada’s great medal hopes at the 2012 Olympic Games.

He is a shining example of a B.C. athlete who has developed to international success with support through all the stages of the athlete pathway. Involved at a young age with the Kamloops Track and Field Club, he represented the ThompsonOkanagan Zone at the 1995 and 1996 BC Summer Games. Success as part of Team BC at the 2001 Canada Games was next before winning gold for Canada at the 2007 and 2010 Pan American Games. All eyes are on this BC Games alumnus to better his fourth-place finish in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Mission swimmer Brent Hayden is another medal contender in London, who competed at the 1998 BC Summer Games.

“The BC Summer Games was the point in my career when I realized that I had the potential to go further,” he said. “It was soon after that that I decided to switch from being a summer swimmer to training all year round. It is clear that I wouldn't have noticed my own potential without the BC Summer Games.”

The full Paralympic team will be named later this summer but former BC Games athletes Bo Hedges (Fort St. John, wheelchair basketball) and Adam Rahier (Powell River, swimming) will be part of the team.

Over 2,300 athletes between 10 and 18 will be at the 2012 BC Summer Games, which kick off just one week prior to the start of the Olympics. It is an inspiring experience that will ignite the dreams of many young athletes to pursue their sport to the highest level.

A veteran of the Canadian women’s soccer team, Maple Ridge’s Karina LeBlanc said, “It was an amazing experience because I did dream of one day being at the Olympic Games and it was the closest thing for me to it, so it made me want to be there that much more!”

Siblings Kieran and Emily Simpson have been looking forward to competing in the BC Summer Games since they qualified, but getting there wasn’t always the plan.

“I wasn’t really focused on the Summer Games, just on running,” said 15-yearold Kieran.

Thirteen-year-old Emily will compete in the 800-, 1,200- and 2,000-metre runs, while Kieran will compete in the 100- and 200-metre runs and long jump.

For three years, the brother and sister have been competing in track and field in Trail, part of a long journey that led them to the

Summer Games, which will be held in Surrey from July 19-22. And they’ve been in cross-country running in Adam Robertson Elementary School and, for Kieran, Prince Charles Secondary School, longer than that.

“Since I was able to run, I’ve entered long-distance runs,” Emily said.

In addition, both play soccer, which recently finished for the season, and are members of the Creston Wave Swim Club.

With nine years of baseball under his belt, Mitchell Bell is ready to take on the province when he plays in the BC Summer Games from July 19-22.

It’s been one of his favourite pastimes since the 15-year-old was six, having been raised in a baseball-loving family.

“I grew up being a Toronto Blue Jays fan,” he said.

This season, Bell played for the Creston Valley Minor Baseball Association’s Maroons, a Junior Babe Ruth team that played in a league with three Cranbrook and two Kimberley teams. The local team finished first during the regular season, but lost in the semifinal game of the league playoffs. Bell hit a grand slam home run in that game, which tied the score 6-6 (Kimberley eventually won 8-6).

“My strong point is hitting,” said Bell.

He earned his selection to the Kootenay Zone team at the same camp that saw him named to the Kootenay Hobos, an all-star team with players from Cranbrook, Kimberley and Creston.

“It was kind of awesome when I found out about it,” he said.

Bell will have a small break after returning from the Summer Games before the Hobos head to Great Falls, Mont., for a tournament from July 27-29.

The timing couldn’t have been better — Bell attended the Toronto Blue Jays Honda Super Camp in Kelowna from July 9-11, brushing up his skills alongside former Blue Jays stars like Lloyd Moseby, Duane Ward, Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar and Rance Mulliniks.

The soon-to-be Grade 10 Prince Charles Secondary School student hopes to make a career out of the sport, and plans to attend a university where he can play baseball. For now, though, his sights are set on the BC Summer Games.

“I just hope I come back with a medal,” he said.

“That’s good for cross-training to compete in track,” said Kieran, who also plays hockey in the winter.

For their specific track training, credit goes to coach Michelle Ares, who drives them to Trail once a week for practice to make sure they’re up to par with the province’s other qualifiers.

“I’m looking forward to the experience and being able to run with the best runners throughout B.C., not just Kootenay runners,” said Emily.

“It will be cool to be in such a big event,” added Kieran. “You want to have fun, but you want to do the best you can.”

Obituaries Deanna (Dee) Lynn Hansen June 3, 1966 ~ June 27, 2012

Deanna (Dee) Lynn Hansen (nee Perrin) passed away very suddenly on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 while visiting family and friends in Manitoba, at the age of 46.

Deanna was born June 3,1966 in Verdin, Manitoba.

She spent all her school years in Cranberry Portage and in grade eight she was selected most likely to succeed.

In her early 20s she moved to BC where she met and married Dave Hansen. She resided in Nelson where her beloved son Skyler was born and a couple of years later she ventured to Creston where she spent her remaining years. While in Creston, Dee worked at RBC, CIBC and the job she enjoyed the most, at Swan Valley Lodge; she loved working with seniors.

Dee was predeceased by her father Ted Perrin.

Dee will be lovingly remembered by the love of her life, her son Skyler; from Manitoba her parents Corrine and Bob Nesbitt; brothers Jim (Barb) Perrin, Danny (Sharron) Perrin; sister Cindy (Leo) Fauchet, and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles along with her extended family in Creston; Scott and Rainy Sommerfeld, where Skyler will reside and continue his education.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday July 21, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock ofciating.

September 1, 1920 ~ July 9, 2012 Dennis passed away peacefully on July 9, 2012 in the Swan Valley Lodge at the age of 91 years.

Dennis was born on the family farm near Delburne, AB to Sybil and Raby Williams on September 1, 1920. Dennis was the fourth son in their family, which eventually grew to be six boys and two girls.

Dennis took his schooling at the Great Bend School, near Delburne, AB then attended Baptist Bible College in Calgary for two years. His Bible School education was interrupted by four and a half years in the RCAF, Western Air Command – “ S Sector Control”. Based at Tono on Vancouver Island for most of his Air Force career, he honed his skills in combat service and control ghter aircraft.

Dennis was a very versatile worker, after nishing another two and a half years of Bible School training he found employment in a variety of jobs just to pay the bills: construction, gas jockey, janitor, sawmill worker, store clerk; he even found work in the labor eld with the Manitoba government for a time, as well as farm work on his parents' farm and in the surrounding community. He also taught school for a short period of time while in Manitoba.

Dennis met and married Muriel Reed, December 24, 1969. It was during this time that work took them into the Child Care profession in High Prairie, AB. They eventually moved to Vancouver and settled a year later in Creston. After a twenty year marriage they parted ways. Muriel resides in Pentiction.

Dennis carried on living on his beloved piece of beautiful BC in Creston until health prohibited him from doing so. He sold his little acreage and moved into the dedicated care of friend and condant – Terry Miller who has been his extended family here. Terry cared for Dennis until his move to Swan Valley Lodge, where she continued to visit and care about him until his passing.

Dennis is predeceased by his father Raby Wells Williams, mother Sybil Winnifred Knights Williams and his three brothers, Robert, Donald and Eric Williams.

He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his brothers Keith (Mary) of Pincher Creek, AB, Arthur (Mary Ellen) of Delburne, AB; sisters Thelma of Red Deer and Sylvia Hansen of Delburne, AB, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service was held at G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel, Creston, BC on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Doug Stapleton ofciating.

Interment followed at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC.

Obituaries Barbara Elizabeth Schmalz January 31, 1930 ~ July 12, 2012

Barbara Elizabeth Schmalz (nee Allen) passed away on July 12, 2012 at her Swan Valley Lodge residence, after a 12 year battle with Alzheimers, at the age of 82 years.

Barb was born on January 31, 1930 to parents Cora and William Allen in Ridgedale, SK where she received her education. Barb grew up in Ridgedale, SK and then met and married the love of her life Ray Schmalz on July 11, 1951 in Shellbrook, SK. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary the day before her passing.

Barb started her married life on a farm outside Shellbrook and then in 1955 Ray’s work took the family to Drayton Valley, AB for a few years. In 1959 they bought Cresthaven Rest Home and made the Creston Valley their home. Barb loved to travel, gardening, shing and taking care of her family.

Barb was predeceased by her mother Cora Allen in 2000 and father William Allen in 1949.

Barb will be remembered by her loving husband Ray Schmalz; their children Jerry (Roxy) Schmalz and Wendy (Tony Wedam) Stander; two grandchildren Vincent and Robyn Schmalz; three great-grandchildren Logan Hambler-Schmalz, Morgan and Dilynn Schmalz; as well as her sister Wilma Metcalf from Saskatoon, SK and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service was held on July 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at New Life Christian Church with Hon. Stockwell Day ofciating.

Spotted wing drosophila was first detected in the Southern Interior valleys of B.C. in 2009. It was widely distributed in 2010 with high numbers captured in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys and low numbers in Creston.

Significant economic impacts to British Columbia’s cherry industry resulted. In contrast, very low numbers of spotted wing drosophila flies were found in 2011 in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys and none in Creston, and no economic damage to soft fruit occurred.

As a result of the recent capture of spotted wing drosophila in Creston, soft fruit growers are being reminded to manage the pest, as damage has already been reported in some early cherry varieties in Eastern Washington and California.

The flies are being monitored with apple cider vinegar traps and additional traps can be purchased from Growers Supply Co Ltd. Emergency registration products are available for the control of this pest. Com-

mercial soft fruit growers should check the Ministry of Agriculture (www.agf.gov. bc.ca/cropprot/swd.pdf) and Okanagan-Kootenay Cherry Growers Association (www.bccherry.com) websites for weekly monitoring reports and information on how to manage spotted wing drosophila.

Everyone’s co-operation is needed to manage and prevent the spread of this serious pest. Abandoned and uncared for trees may harbour the pest and if left untreated may pose a serious threat to neighboring orchards. Leftover and fallen fruit should be cleaned up and properly disposed of by tying up in plastic bags or frozen for 48 hours before disposal. Do not compost infested fruit as home composting will not kill the flies.
