Abashiri, Japan and Port Alberni still benefit from twinning relationship 26 years later

Twenty-four years ago, Linda Stenberg and two other students left Port Alberni for Abashiri, Japan, in the first cultural exchange between new “sister” cities.

A Grade 11 student at Alberni District Secondary School, Stenberg spent a year in Abashiri, a coastal city in northern Hokkaido. There was no Skype to communicate with her family back home: she wrote letters. Western food? Forget it: there was no such thing as “foreign” food in Abashiri in 1986.

“We went over and sat in a classroom for a year and tried to learn Japanese,” she recalled. “It was really hard. When we were in Abashiri we never saw any foreigners.”

Last week, Stenberg returned to Port Alberni from her home in Vancouver to celebrate the twinning relationship that has endured fluctuating economies as well as the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 that killed thousands of people and displaced thousands more in coastal Japanese communities.

Stenberg, her husband Andrew Konetzka and their two daughters, Liv and Sydney, joined a delegation from Abashiri, the ConsulateGeneral of Japan Hideki Ito, Port Alberni dignitaries and members of the Port Alberni International Twinning Society at Harbour Quay.

The family of the late Koubun Ohbayashi dedicated a bench to the father of the twinning relationship.

Earlier in the day at city hall, Abashiri mayor Yoichi Mizutani and Alberni mayor John Douglas signed a document reaffirming the

Since 1986, 820 Abashiri students and 400 Port Alberni students have crossed the Pacific Ocean on cultural exchanges between the two cities, Mizutani said.

Another group of students as well as a mixed hockey team will return to Port Alberni in January 2013.

Over the years, the exchanges have slowed down; however, proponents say their relevance remains today.

Stenberg has enjoyed a career in banking, and she and her husband lived in Tokyo for eight years in the late 1990s before returning to Canada to start a family.

The exposure to another culture that she gained while living with a billet family in Abashiri has been important to her career.

Even in this digital age, where the concept of “global village” is the norm and not the exception, spending time in a foreign country changes one’s perspective, she said. “(You learn) people really are the same. You start to get a much more open mind.”

The exchanges began as a way to boost Port Alberni’s economy by building foreign business relationships, said Gillian Trumper, who was mayor at the time of the twinning agreement.

“In 1985 there was quite a movement of twinning with Japanese communities,” she said.

“Campbell River had just gone through it. We were asked whether we would be interested.”

City council talked to several service clubs and the school district, and decided it would be beneficial to the community, she said.

Ohbayashi led the process, professing his love of the Alberni Valley until his death 10 years ago.

Class is in session at Pacific Coast University as the institution conducts its first summer session at its campus in Port Alberni.

These aren’t your typical firsttime students, said Donal McAnaney, the chair of PCU’s International Research Advisory Council. They are union reps, human resource managers, occupational health and safety officers and disability managers.

“These are very senior employees who have hands-on experience with stress and mental health issues in the workplace,” McAnaney said.

Presenting on Tuesday was McAnaney, a PhD who

formerly worked with the UK’s Rehab Group.

He first came into contact with PCU’s

Wolfgang Zimmerman in 1999 while trying to find a disability management system that worked in his home of Ireland.

Mental health issues are critical issues in workplaces, from both human resource and monetary perspectives, McAnaney said.

According to summer session material, at any given time up to 20 per cent of the working population suffers from a mental health issue. More than one third of all disability claims are due to mental health reasons.

The costs companies incur dealing with mental health issues are equivalent to three to four per cent of gross domestic product.

Today, re-integrating employees with disabilities into the workplace instead of

shunting them onto disability is key.

“They’re out of sight and out of mind,” McAnaney said. “And employers don’t always know the costs associated with it in terms of premium paid, finding a replacement and training them.”

There is another incentive to getting back into the workplace as well.

“People on a disability pension are 17 per cent more likely to die,” Zimmerman said.

McAnaney used the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority as an example of a workplace that adopted a longterm disability management package.

The organization saved millions as a result. “We make a business case based on huge savings,” McAnaney said.

Qualicum man dies after tubing over Stamp Falls RCMP: | Two women survive mishap on river.

An afternoon of tubing went tragically wrong on Sunday (July 15) for three friends from Qualicum Beach after the inflatable rafts they had strung together went over Stamp Falls, northwest of Port Alberni. The young people, all in their early 20s, were apparently unfamiliar with the river.

Cory Donald Heinz, 22, died in the accident while two unidentified females had to be rescued from the steep cliffs in a narrow canyon below the falls. The trio had launched their makeshift raft from the Stamp River Provincial Park campground, above the treacherous falls, Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

All three went over the falls; witnesses saw Heinz floating face down past the area where the girls were rescued, and was brought to shore by civilians in the area at Slide Pool, Alberni Valley Rescue Squad spokesperson Mark Palmer said. None of the three were apparently wearing life jackets.

Palmer said the rescue and recovery were among the most complicated he has ever seen in the 12 years he has been a squad member.

Volunteer swift water rescue technicians were dispatched to Stamp Falls, where they had to rappel down the steep canyon walls to reach the two women, one in the water clinging to a rock and the other trapped on a small ledge a few metres above the water.

Bill Crowshaw came to Port Alberni in 1912 to work at the Bank Of Montreal when it was located in the Carmoor Block at the foot of Argyle Street. He and his wife Annie, a war bride from England, are one of a few “heritage families” who have been recognized

by Port Alberni’s centennial organizers because their descendants have lived in the city for more than 100 years.

children. The eldest, Kathleen Day, is now 93 years old and still lives in Port Alberni, at Westhaven.

Ken Crowshaw moved to Alberta after serving in the second World War, but his youngest brother Len was employed by the City of Port Alberni for his working life and his children still reside here.

Kathleen’s children have lived in town over the years and her second child Pamela still lives here.

Ken Crowshaw heard that the Alberni Puddle Duck Racers were building boats and holding a regatta in town as part of the centennial celebrations. He remembered that his father Bill spent much of his later working

life as a waterman on the Alberni Canal.

Ken was amused by the “cheap, easy and fun on the water” motto of the Puddle Duckers. He was enthusiastic about this innovative use of Port Alberni’s waterfront, so he offered to sponsor the regatta with a financial contribution and donate a race trophy, dedicated to his parents, for the event winners.

The crystal sailboat trophy will be called the Crowshaw Cup and is sure to be a sought after prize by the Puddle Duckers of Vancouver Island for many years to come.

Ken Crowshaw will present the trophy Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. at Harbour Quay after the races.

Girl turns tables on consulate general Roxy Manson of Port Alberni was finally introduced in person to Hideki Ito, Japan’s consulategeneral in Vancouver.

Following the devastating earthquake that killed thousands in Japan in 2011, Manson decided to forego birthday presents. She instead asked her friends to make donations so the money could help people affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Ito has said it is one of the more poignant stories of Canadians’ generosity that he remembers.

Manson, 7, and her family—parents Stacey and Brent and older sister Libby—were invited to a luncheon at the Alberni Golf Course last Friday with Ito and a delegation from Abashiri, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Ito presented Manson with a small gift as a token of appreciation for her philanthropy.

The youngster then turned the tables on Ito, presenting him with $173 in birthday money from her seventh birthday in April.

River safety is paramount Hitting the ol’ information highway We are fortunate in the Alberni Valley to have such natural gems literally in our backyard, where we can spend summer and winter months pursuing outdoor activities. This is something that attracts residents and tourists alike to our region.

It is easy for us to be complacent with our surroundings, becoming preoccupied with the splendour. A tragic accident at Stamp River Provincial Park last weekend reminds us that we must be vigilant with our safety. One man died and two women are lucky to be alive after they went over Stamp Falls in their inflatable rafts.

Visitors to the Valley, they did not realize they were tubing in a dangerous part of the river, upstream of the falls.

Not three weeks ago, the RCMP issued a stern warning to people that the Stamp River is running high, and people wishing to pursue recreational activities such as tubing would be wise to wear a personal flotation device and go with someone familiar with the area.

Still, there were dozens of people on the river this weekend and many of them disregarded the warning.

Just as we must take personal responsibility for our choices, we must also recognize safety is a two-way street.

The young women who survived the plunge over the falls said there wasn’t sufficient signage warning them that they were tubing in the wrong place. Others have echoed the same sentiment.

It behooves BC Parks to address these concerns.

After all, the cost of putting up another danger sign is nothing when compared to the cost of another human life.

ICTORIA – By the time you read this I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives.

Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one end of the province to the other more times than I can count.

A similar trip last year began just as a huge mudslide was cleared near Chilliwack. Other drives have featured mid-summer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays.

This time I’ve got a new tool on board, the mobile version of DriveBC.ca on

my BlackBerry. Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with the surging popularity of smartphones.

In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-year-old desktop site and half from mobile users. It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website.

I asked DriveBC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent months. But trying out the mobile site, it’s easy to see the appeal.

With a few clicks, the phone displays incident reports and web camera images for my chosen route. Webcams have been added steadily all over the province, and now watch 18 key locations on

Vancouver Island, 93 in the Lower Mainland, 73 in the Southern Interior, 35 in the North and 13 at Canada-U.S. border crossings. At a glance, you can check anything from the traffic at the Lions Gate Bridge to the lineup for the Skidegate ferry on Haida Gwaii.

Most pictures update every two minutes, offering a real-time look at traffic, weather and road conditions.

A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds.

Another new feature is an email alert that can be customized.

You can subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are posted to the DriveBC network. And of course there is an @drivebc

To the Editor, The fact that at least two contractors working for Yellowridge Construction have not been paid for work performed suggests that that company won the contract for building the new high school on the basis of a fixed price.

It seems that Yellowridge doesn’t have enough money to pay for all the work done by subcontractors.

Meanwhile, School District 70 administrators continue to perpetuate the apparent fiction that the project is “on time and on budget,” ignoring the question of subcontractor payments, the cost of the new Klitsa ball fields, and the cost of demolishing the present Alberni District Secondary School, estimated at millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, they persist in trumpeting the energy efficiencies and design features of the new school while totally ignoring the environmental havoc and pollution caused by building it.

The simplest, cheapest, and most environmentally

friendly approach was to make any necessary upgrades to the existing ADSS, a wood frame building which could have been used, just like our old hospital, for decades to come.

Why chicken before road?

To the editor, Don’t get me wrong, I love chickens and bees... But where have our priorities gone?

Our leaders demand surveys be done on chickens in my backyard, but when it comes to a $100 million highway proposal to Highway 19 through Horne Lake and around the Timberlodge Hotel to Ship Creek Road no one thinks it’s worth asking residents their opinion first?

Dare I even mention the word “Referendum”?

Don’t worry, the port authority decided instead to urge the Ministry of Transportation to hurry along planning for their new highway connector... consider yourselves consulted.

When is the public going to have a say? When are local officials going to

show what other options there are to divert truck traffic (like say, rail for one third the cost), and the comparisons of all of it impacting on our watersheds, recreational areas, business growth, and carbon footprint?

Should this highway be built or maybe the road to Bamfield and Cowichan is more important? Or maybe the one out Beaver Creek to the Comox Valley?

And what can be built fastest to get Raven Coal Project trucks out of the city if the mine goes in in 2014, this highway or the rail line?

It seems the port authority would rather just keep all that behind closed doors and leave residents to worry about chickens and bees.

Gov’t sneaks in more changes To the Editor, As the country warmly embraces Canada Day on July 1, the federal government will use

the distraction to introduce one of the more mean-spirited measures we’ve seen in years.

They will remove full medicare coverage from refugees, and thus send them to join indentured guest workers as part of the first underclass of Canadians.

The idea has hardly gone over well with doctors, who expect to see people being untreated or flooding emergency rooms as in the United States.

But the tireless feds have no intention to stop there, and a month later will create a third class of Canadian, our farmers.

First the Canadian Wheat Board will begin to be phased out, against the wishes of a majority of prairie farmers who wanted the marketing board left alone.

And then right-wing policy makers will take aim at another aspect of farming.

They have already begun to demonize supply management, by which they mean tariffs, which make the business model of poultry, egg and dairy producers possible.

Cherry Creek Fire Department Chief Mike Sparrow dons an antique turnout coat and helmet and shows off a gas mask; all artifacts that will be on display this Saturday, July 21 at Cherry Creek F.D.’s 50th anniversary open house.

The Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department answered its first call on July 27, 1962. It was one of less than a dozen that the newly formed department handled, under the direction of fire Chief Charlie Haggard.

Fifty years later, Haggard has passed on, the department’s fleet has grown to four trucks, and its volunteers respond to roughly 80 calls a year.

This weekend, the department celebrates a half-century of serving the Cherry Creek community.

The public is welcome to come and help celebrate at an open house this Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Cherry Creek Road and Moore Road.

There will be free food, a mock-up fire house that kids can shoot water at, games, displays and demonstrations.

The department received $2,000 from the AlberniClayoquot Regional District to pay for its celebration.

While the fire department still operates out of its original building, and the siren atop the building is still put to use, firefighters have seen some significant changes since it started, present Chief Mike Sparrow said.

In 1962 the department owned just four sets of turnout gear, and it was heavy. A fireman’s helmet cost $6.95. “They’re about $80 now,� he said.

It costs approximately $4,000 to outfit one firefighter, and all 24 or so have their own gear.

Western Forest Products Inc. is investing $6.7 million in an electronic lumber grading machine to be installed at Alberni Plywood Division, WFP vice-chair Lee Doney said.

The announcement was made at APD last week in front of mill employees, civic officials, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson and Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Catelon.

The automatic lumber grader will be the first in coastal B.C., will make grading more efficient and streamline a labour intensive job.

But on the other side of the ledger the technology investment comes at a price as up to 14 jobs will be lost, officials said.

The company has managed to turn a profit through 10 financial quarters despite a tough economy, and chose to plow $125 million into its mills.

The industry took it on the chin during one of the biggest downturns in recent memory and the investment could be construed as a sign that a step has been taken out from under the economic weight.

Automatic lumber grading is used extensively in the B.C. Interior as well as elsewhere in the world.

In the interior, there are only two species of trees to automatically scan.

The equipment scans wood fiber as lumber passes by workers on a belt. The wood is then sorted by size and grade based on the data generated.

The autoscanner is being tested repeatedly between now and October, after which it will be

installed at APD. The new technology requires fewer workers to operate than the old one did and 14 workers will lose their jobs, said APD Manager Joe Holmes. There may be some displacement, “But we will find people jobs in the mill,” Holmes said.

The average age of the mill’s workers is 54, so some of those 14 jobs will be lost through attrition, he said. Other workers will find slots by virtue of their seniority.

The upside is that the new technology will provide a more stable footing for the remaining jobs, Holmes said.

The news of job loss clarified what had been on the mill’s unofficial employee telegraph for weeks, said Rick Neuwirth, president of United Steelworkers Local 185.

“We’ve heard rumours about this but the first time I officially heard it was at the announcement today,” Neuwirth said.

The move is a double-edged sword, he said. “They’re investing in the mill but it’s at a cost of jobs.

“The benefit down the line too is that they won’t be closing the mill if they make this kind of investment.”

Neuwirth and other officials will be notifying their membership before having a sit-down with mill management to discuss transitioning to the new technology.

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.

Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landďŹ lls every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore.

BCUOMA is a non-for-proďŹ t organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil ďŹ lters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers.

Chef opens new eatery SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A Port Alberni chef has won the request for proposals to fill the vacant restaurant at Harbour Quay. City of Port Alberni officials handed over the keys to Starboard Grill owner Brad De Clercq on Tuesday.

For the past three years, De Clercq has commuted from Port Alberni to Nanaimo, where he was the head chef at the Old City Station Pub. He is renowned for his candied seafood and clam chowders, recipes developed while he worked at Weigh West Marina in Tofino. He also worked at Crown Isle golf resort in Courtenay.

Now, the Vancouver Island University graduate will make his mark at home. “I’ve always wanted to have my own restaurant,� De Clercq said. He started his professional career as a pub line cook after graduating from VIU’s culinary arts program in 1990.

He has worked in restaurants in B.C. and Alberta and is now a Red Seal Chef.

De Clercq has had his eye on the quay space for a while. The restaurant has been vacant since early spring, when Water’s Edge Restaurant closed. But leaving the pub in Nanaimo was difficult, he said. “The job that I had in Nanaimo and the ownership were great.

Abashiri twinning still relevant: mayor From / 3 “Abashiri came to us. They found out we had similar things,” said Regional District of Nanaimo chairman Joe Stanhope, a councillor in Port Alberni in 1986. “It’s a very important fishing port.”

Some businesses flourished under the new relationship with Abashiri, Trumper said. In the late 1980s a local company was building homes out of wood sourced in the region and sending them to Japan. “That came about through the twinning.”

Over the years the educational side of the relationship has bloomed. Teachers have in the past gone on exchanges to Abashiri to teach English for a year at a time.

Laurie Morphet, vice-principal at ADSS, has seen first hand how valuable student exchanges are. When her daughter, Kama Money—now a teacher at ADSS—was in Grade 8 she went on an exchange to Abashiri, and has maintained her friendships.

“It’s very interesting, comparing cultures,” Morphet said. “It’s a connection. The difference between having a twin city and going travelling is they look after you very well (in Abashiri). It’s like family.”

Sharon Gowan can attest to that. In 1986 she billeted with

Keiko Motomura; although they have stayed in touch, they hadn’t seen each other in 26 years. They met again last Friday and “were like little school girls,” Morphet said.

experience stuck with her and when she was 23, after earning her undergraduate degree, she went to Abashiri to teach English for 10 months.

“I fell in love with teaching and Abashiri,” said McKinnon, who is president of Port Alberni’s twinning society. In 1997 she returned with the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program and stayed for three years. “It was like going back home.”

She would like to see the cultural exchanges continue, and would especially like to see opportunities open up for First Nations youth in Port Alberni. While she recognizes times are tough for people and communities right now, “you can’t put a price tag on cultural exchange.”

Abashiri mayor Mizutani agrees. “The twinning process has been especially valuable for our young

people,” he said.

“Many, many students have benefited from cultural exchanges that have taken place over the past 26 years and we hope these exchanges between our cities will continue.

“I know the students’ delegation and children’s hockey team scheduled to visit Port Alberni next January are all very excited about the opportunities that await.”

Mizutani thanked Port Alberni for supporting the twinning exchanges, and especially for opening their hearts to support his city following the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011.

“As we can continue this friendship, we would like to see it grow deeper and stronger,” he said.

In signing the reaffirmation, Douglas acknowledged the importance of Port Alberni’s relationship with Abashiri. “We hope to maintain and to cultivate our relationship with our sister city and through that to strengthen our bond between Canada and Japan,” he said. editor@albernivalleynews.com

recently instrumental player in the islands silver medal win at the Provencal regional championships July 6-8 at UBC. The versatile Mullen plays scrum half, first row and second row on her teams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve slowly learned to play most positions so you can throw me somewhere and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably played there,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Next for Mullen is a five-day camp in Vancouver in early August before flying with her team to Quebec for tournament play Aug. 6-12.

A Port Alberni girl who qualified to play in the B.C. Summer Games in rugby has forgone the opportunity.

Instead, ADSS Grade 12 student Keanna Mullen, 17, was named to the Team BC team that is headed to the National Championships being held next month in Quebec City.

Mullen was one of 25 girls who made the team, whose tryout numbers were peeled from the 65 who tried out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were 30 of us that last day. They cut five players and I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one of them so I felt relieved,â&#x20AC;? Mullen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was my biggest dream and I made it.â&#x20AC;?

McFarlane are the only other players from Port Alberni who ever made the BC team.

Mullen, who is playing second line for Team BC, is fresh off a five-day training regime with her new team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the hardest Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever been trained in my life,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would have been upset if I was cut but I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.â&#x20AC;?

Mullen became interested in girls rugby at age 13 after watching her older sister Tayla play with the Black Sheep. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They asked me to come out to practice. I did and I was hooked after that.â&#x20AC;?

In the five years since, Mullen has played with the ADSS Armada, Black Sheep and Tsunami Island rep team.

She captains the Armada and won most improved player and MVP awards.

This is the third full year for prep camp in Port Alberni, and the first year for an all-female week, camp director Mike Coflin said. The camp continues for three more weeks.

Joining Ensor, Rasmussen, and Woodward as K.P. winners were Scott Fuller, Larry Gavelin, Wayne Johnstone, Jason Pley of Pley Roofing and Rob Longeuay of First Glass.

BC Games a catalyst Batter up for BC Summer Games for sports tourism

Since 1978, the BC Winter and BC Summer Games have been hosted in 38 different communities around the province.

The BC Games have become part of the historical record of communities and for many, an honour and experience that has inspired them to build a vibrant sport tourism industry.

Long before sport tourism was identified as an important part of the tourism industry, the BC Winter and BC Summer Games were demonstrating the valuable impact of sport events. Besides the obvious economic benefits ($1.8 million to $2.6 million), the BC Games bring a community together, train leaders, and create exposure and recognition opportunities.

Sport tourism is growing at a consistently strong rate, despite the trends that have shown a declining tourism industry in recent years.

According to the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance, spending associated with sport tourism in Canada reached $3.6 billion in 2010, an 8.8 per cent increase in two years.

This continues sport tourism’s trend of being one of the fastest growing industry segments within Canada’s tourism industry.

The number of B.C. communities becoming active in sport tourism continues to grow.

The BC Games

Society and Tourism BC co-manage the HostingBC.ca website which provides a sport hosting portfolio for B.C. sport hosting destinations, including an inventory of sport facilities, sport hosting experience, photo galleries, maps, technical venue information, support services, and key contacts.

Port Alberni, which has hosted all four BC Games (summer, winter, seniors and disability games), is listed on this site.

The 2012 BC Summer Games will take place in Surrey, July 19–22.

Tourism Surrey and the City of Surrey recently developed and implemented a new sport tourism strategy with the purpose of attracting sport events and increase visitation to Surrey.

If pedigree is any measure, then Alan Charlesworth is a blue blood chip off the old block.

The 12-year-old Grade 8 student from AW Neill is the only Port Alberni boy on the 12-player roster of a team competing in the BC Summer Games next week.

Tryouts were held six weeks ago in Nanaimo and Charlesworth gave it his best shot and made it. “I was kind of surprised at first and then I was happy.

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I made it,” he said.

His accomplishment is even more noteworthy considering most of the team comes from either Sooke or Langley.

Several Port Alberni residents are competing in the games in sports such as wrestling, rugby and track and field.

Charlesworth’s father is Al Charlesworth senior.

Born and raised in the Alberni Valley, Al senior played first base on the Port Machine Huskies and Arlington Hotel Juniors, both teams of which captured BC junior titles in the early 1980’s.

Alan Charlesworth, 12, is the only Port Alberni resident playing on a team from Nanaimo that is competing in the BC Summer Games next week.

The Grade 8 student plays short stop, pitcher and second base.

His brother Terry Charlesworth was a skilled softball player of note as well.

Alan is multi-skilled and can pitch, play shortstop or second base. He played softball this season in Port Alberni for Traffic Storm, a team coached by Christine Forbes and Mona Charlesworth.

Alan has a practice on Wednesday and is then leaving for Cloverdale (where

the games are being played) on Thursday morning. The team’s first game is on Friday morning and the finals are on Sunday afternoon.

He lived on Galiano Island with his parents and sister but moved to Port Alberni where his father is from in 2006 for more sports opportunities.

He took up the game shortly afterward.

Concert band at Quay Harbour Quay in Southport will be filled with live music this Saturday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. as the Port Alberni Centennial Committee presents the Nanaimo Concert Band in a free outdoor performance.

Bring your own chair, relax and listen to Canada’s oldest continuously operating concert band.

The Nanaimo Concert Band is recognized as one of the finest groups in the country, and has attracted some of the most experienced music directors in Canada.

The band was established in 1872, founded and conducted by Reverend James Reynard.

The first name given to the band was “The Nanaimo Junior Brass Band” but shortly thereafter it was renamed the “Nanaimo Brass

The band’s second conductor was Mark Bate, who was also the band’s president and the first Mayor of Nanaimo.

In 1889, the band was renamed the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Band” after the distinctive silverplated instruments purchased from J.W Pepper in the United States.

In the 1920s the band was known for the many honours its members won in competitions and was nicknamed the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Prize Band”.

It wasn’t until 1950 that it was renamed to the current name “ Nanaimo Concert Band”.

Saturday’s concert will be approximately two hours long.
