The Games begin Abby hosts towed watersports events for BC Summer Games Upwards of 2,300 young athletes from across the province are descending on the Fraser Valley, as the BC Summer Games open today (Thursday). Surrey is hosting the bulk of the multi-sport festival, but Abbotsford’s Albert Dyck Park will be the venue for towed watersports (water-ski, wakeboard and barefoot). Fifty-three

athletes from Abbotsford have qualified to participate in the Games, and many more local coaches, officials and volunteers will be involved. The Games provide a high-level competitive environment for developing young athletes, and have served as a launching pad for 25 members of the Canadian Olympic team at the 2012 London Summer Games. Alumni

include Dylan Armstrong (shot put), Ryder Hesjedal (cycling), Brent Hayden (swimming) and Carol Huynh (wrestling). The BC Summer Games opening ceremonies are today, and competition runs Friday through Sunday. For a complete schedule of events, visit bcgames.org. For more local coverage, see page A35.
