✔HOME TIP

Do alarm systems work?

A.

Yes. Home security has four parts to it. First is deterrence – found in the elements like the red and white Price’s Alarm sticker or yardsign that will discourage a thief from targeting the home. Second is delaying – keeping your doors and windows locked and eliminating bushes that provide privacy for thieves to gain access. Third is detection – if someone is breaking into your home, you need to know about it and Price’s Alarms will do that. Fourth is response – and our local monitoring professionals will respond immediately in the event of a problem.

Carpets, area rugs, chairs and sofas are among the heaviest used items in our homes, but unlike counters and tables, they may go the longest time between cleaning. However, the proper care will not only leave things clean and fresh, but will also ensure they stay looking beautiful for years to come. And that’s where the expert care from Victoria’s Coastal Cleaners can help. Victoria’s trusted, family owned and operated carpet and upholstery cleaners for 40 years, with IICRC Certified techs and an A+ accreditation with the BBB, Coastal Cleaner’s emphasis on healthy, environmentally friendly products and techniques is apreciated by both residential and commercial clients. Not only will your carpets and furnishings come out looking fantastic, but the process is non-toxic and non-allergenic, explains Coastal Cleaners owner Elaine Salo, whose parents founded the company four decades ago. And for most carpets, thanks to the Green Seal Certified Host Waterless Dry Extraction System, including deep-cleaning with pile lifting and gentle brush agitation, they’ll be left 100% dry and ready to use. Regular vacuuming with a goodquality vacuum is a must to get rid of all the loose dirt – even the dirt you can’t see. And if you do get a spill, be sure not to use products that are designed to need rinsing, such as laundry soap or products designed to clean hard surfaces to try to clean it as they won’t come out of the carpet properly. Instead, use a cup of water to which has been added just one drop only of dish soap and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Never pour onto the spot, but dip a white towel in the solution and blot. Don’t scrub, as it could damage bres. If a carpet is Scotchgarded any spills will be much easier to remove and much less likely to result in permanent staining.

✔FAST FACT

Can I put hot things on stone or quartz?

A.

Generally, stone and quartz are very heat resistant, but it depends on “how hot” of an object. A tea kettle or a hot dish out of the microwave is typically not a threat but a 450° pot from the oven can cause damage. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry, so we recommend the use of a hot pad.

My bathroom plug has stopped working for no apparent reason – any ideas?

A.

Instead of calling an electrician when your bathroom plug or your outside plug stops working, check both of them for a little push button reset. Many houses wired in the ‘80s through to the late ‘90s had both plugs wired on the same circuit, with one of them protecting the other. If one isn’t working it’s more than likely you have just tripped the GFCI. Push the reset on it and you should be back in business! Regardless of the service provided, the key is building relationships and providing quality of care – the founding principles of Island Home Care. To do that, hiring the right staff is essential, and Butterfield takes considerable time to ensure she has the right person for the job, and in making an appropriate match with clients. “We only hire people who are doing what they do because they love it.” That philosophy seems to be working. “We’re getting awesome feedback and word-of-mouth advertising is such a great way to grow.” Butterfield’s housekeeping services have really taken off, as clients appreciate the thoroughness and attention to detail her Clean Teams provide. “We do everything – we fluff pillows, arrange your towels, fold the laundry, make the bed, run the dishwasher and if there are dishes in the sink, they’ll be washed and put away

> Keep your home comfortable year-round with proper insulation Andd if you have A h a house h built b il pre-1990, 1990 chances are an insulation upgrade could help keep your home more comfortable – warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. In turn, that increased efficiency will help reduce your energy bills and increase the life of your heating equipment as it won’t be working so hard. For those planning to sell their homes, upgraded, energy-efficient insulation is also an added selling point. Homes built prior to mid-1990 could most likely benefit from additional insulation in the attic and crawlspace, if applicable. For those built before 1970, exterior walls may also require upgrading. Regardless of your insulation needs, the Alpine team will leave your home cozy and ready for winter.

✔FAST FACT How do I know if my insulation is insufficient?

A.

Winter signs of poor insulation include: walls cold to touch; cold oors; high heating costs; uneven heating levels within the building; and mold growing on walls. In summer, look for: uncomfortably hot inside air; high cooling costs; ineffectiveness of air conditioning system; and mold growing in basement.

Victoria’s full-service insulation installer can help. Founded in 1979, Alpine Insulation is proficient in the full spectrum of insulation options from your home, including spray foam, batts, sprayed fibre and blown retrofit insulation, explains owner Dave MacDonell. Since its founding, Alpine has committed to providing excellence in both its product and service, evidenced by its A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island. Long-term staff and a commitment to continuing education ensures homeowners receive the most current information about the products and practices best-suited to their homes, from new construction to the city’s heritage buildings. “Everyone who works for Alpine is a professional and we stand behind our work,” MacDonell says. “Between us, we’ve seen it all and we’re good at what we do.” This spring, Alpine Insulation also welcomed David Frost and his team of professionals from Insulpro, bringing their expertise and commitment to customer service, MacDonell notes. ✔HOME TIP

Are environmentally friendly paints as durable as conventional paints?

A.

Yes, new technology has allowed for green paints to meet and exceed architectural standards. In certain cases, notably exterior restorations, conventional oil primers may be used to ensure surface bonding. Most earlier-era homes have an oil paint base, so to maintain the protective membrane, oil must be reapplied over spot priming to avoid moisture escaping through the latex membrane which is designed to breathe.

UV lights work on intense rays. I like the look of natural wood for the exterior of my home but don’t want a lot of maintenance. Do you have any suggestions?

A.

You could consider using highquality, cedar shakes in a few detail areas. Smaller sections are easier to maintain and they’re often in areas of the facade that don’t typically create maintenance headaches – in the gables, for example.
