Approximately 45 vehicles of all makes, models and colours rolled into Spirit Square last Sunday for the annual Show and Shine event. There was a mix of old and new vehicles from across B.C. on display. Owners of the highly polished vehicles had a chance to show off their prized possessions to a large audience.

were left without employment following the explosion and fire that completely destroyed the mill.

According to Norm Fox, Hampton Affiliates Canadian human resources manager, 93 Babine Forest Products employees have now found alternative employment, while 143, remain unemployed.

Fox said the employees have been hired at Canfor, Conifex, Decker Lake For-

est Products, Endako Mine, Finning, Pinnacle Pellet, Tahtsa timber, the Village of Burns Lake, West Fraser Timber and Huckleberry Mine.

Sheryl Worthing, village chief administrative officer said that one Babine Forest products employee has been hired to work as a labourer for the village works crew.

In 1974, the First Nations of Burns Lake, the Burns Lake community at large and the provincial government came together to build a modern sawmill in Burns Lake.

Babine Forest Products was the realization of that vision. It was spearheaded by George Brown—a charismatic courtworker who visualized a mill that would boost jobs and local pride, particularly among the First Nations peoples of Burns Lake.

Something ... or nothing?

It’s natural for a political party to see several of its sitting members retire shortly before an election.

With an election set in British Columbia for May of next year, unless Premier Christy Clark decides to extend the Liberals’ mandate, it’s not unexpected that several Liberals have announced they will not be seeking re-election.

Most recently Dave Hayer announced he will not seeking re-election in May. He joins Kash Heed, Kevin Krueger and Harry Bloy on the list of MLAs not returning.

Barry Penner and Iain Black who resigned from office in past year, plus rumblings from pundits that Kevin Falcon and Rich Coleman may join that list.

Depending on which side of the political fence you’re on, you either view the announcements as those with foresight getting out while the getting’s good or MLAs who, in the case of some of them, have been in political life for a long time and have decided to let someone else in.

If the latter is the case, it makes sense to announce now so there is time to get a good candidate in place prior to next May’s election.

However, Hayer’s announcement came a

day before a new poll, suggesting MLAs’ motivation might be the former.

An Angus Reid online poll of 801 British Columbians suggested that 45 per cent of decided voters and leaners (-5 since May) would support the NDP candidate in their constituency in the next provincial election.

The BC Liberals are still at 23 per cent, while the BC Conservatives have gained three points (22 per cent).

The BC Greens are fourth with eight per cent (+2).

The NDP continues to lead in all four regions of the province, with the support of at least two-in-five decided voters in the Interior (41 per cent), Vancouver Island (46 per cent), Metro Vancouver (47 per cent) and the North (48 per cent).

The BC Liberals are second in the North (29 per cent) and Vancouver Island (26 per cent), while the BC Conservatives are ahead of the governing party in the Interior (27 per cent) and Metro Vancouver (24 per cent).

That kind of support would put the NDP in power with a healthy majority.

Even though the BC Conservatives are gaining ground, realistically, holding the balance of power in a minority government would be a crowning achievement.

However, even that may be out of reach.

The election is now nine months away and in politics, that’s pretty much a lifetime. Stay tuned, because I think that it’s going to be an interesting year in British Columbia politics … as they always are.

By the time you read this I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives.

Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one end of the province to the other more times than I can count.

A similar trip last year began just as a huge mud slide was cleared near Chilliwack.

Other drives have featured midsummer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays.

This time I’ve got a new tool on board, the mobile version of DriveBC.ca on my BlackBerry.

Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with the surging popularity of smart phones.

In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-year-old desktop site and half from mobile users.

It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website.

I asked Drive BC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent months.

But trying out the mobile site, it’s easy to see the appeal.

With a few clicks, the phone displays incident reports and web camera images for my chosen route.

Webcams have been added steadily all over the province, and now watch 18 key locations on Vancouver Island, 93 in the Lower Mainland, 73 in the Southern Interior, 35 in the North and 13 at Canada - U.S. border crossings.

At a glance, you can check anything from the traffic at the Lions Gate Bridge to the lineup for the Skidegate ferry on Haida Gwaii.

Most pictures update every two minutes, offering a real-time look

at traffic, weather and road conditions.

A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds.

Another new feature is an email alert that can be customized.

You can subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are posted to the DriveBC network.

And of course there is an @ Drive BC Twitter feed, where between 6:30 a.m. and midnight, staff update conditions and respond to inquiries. (Major events are automatically tweeted overnight.)

Verified reports are fed from highways staff and contractors all over the province and coordinated through the provincial highways condition centre in the Lower Mainland.

It’s become a primary source of information for radio and TV traffic and news reporters around B.C. The mobile service now has an option for drivers to report new problems they encounter.

After determining your smart phone’s location, the site displays the name and phone number of the local maintenance contractor who can take the report.

For those who haven’t joined the smart phone era, there is an old-fashioned option.

Dialing 5-1-1 anywhere in the province gives access to a tollfree line that connects to recorded Drive BC messages.

Agarwal said use of that service has been declining as phones with web access become more popular.

The 5-1-1 service also requires you to use the keypad to select your route from a numerical list, so drivers would have to pull over rather than breach the new restrictions on using handheld devices while driving.

The 5-1-1 system still gets surges of heavy use during major events like the recent flooding.

The plan is to upgrade the system to allow voice recognition, so drivers can use headsets to get updates on the move.

Lake Babine Nation moving onwards and upwards Chief Wilf Adam positive about the future of Lake Babine Nation

WILF ADAM REBECCA BILLARD Wilf Adam was elected as chief for a second three year term at Lake Babine Nation last month and he is now gearing up for another busy term.

He said to Lakes District News that he is very pleased to have been reelected to represent Lake Babine Nation.

According to Chief Adam, now that the band's finances are back in good order, chief and

council will be concentrating on finding employment for their out of work members.

He said 66 Lake Babine Nation members worked at the Babine Forest Products mill prior to the Jan. 20, 2012 tragedy and while some have found alternative employment, many are still looking for another job.

"Our priority is getting a new mill rebuilt in Burns Lake, so chief and council will be doing everything we can to support that,” he said.

“Some Babine Forest Products employees did go back to work at the mill to work on log processing, but that has wrapped up now and they are back out of work again, so we are doing our best to find them employment."

There will be a continued focus from chief and council on Lake Babine Nation's youth and Chief Adam said

that the Woyenne based youth centre has resulted in some decreased crime rates being reported.

"A youth centre was one of the things that was lacking for Lake Babine Nation and we plan to constantly work on improving things for the youth.”

“We will be taking the knowledge we have gained from the Woyenne youth centre, to Tachet and Fort Babine and will be looking at establishing youth centres in those communities," he said.

Chief and council will also continue to build on their relationship with the Village of Burns Lake.

"I had a chance to talk with Mayor Luke Strimbold recently and we also plan to sit down with the village this month. We will be planning more joint council meetings. We find them valuable be-

cause we gain a better understanding of each other and have found out that we have some of the same issues that we have to deal with.

It's great to interact and work together," Chief Adam said.

"It is an interesting council for Lake Babine Nation this term. Different from the last council ... just one councillor survived the election, so it will be interesting to see how we all work together."

He said they have held a couple of council meetings since the election, that went very well.

According to Chief Adam, Lake Babine Nation's election code will also be reviewed and chief and council have plans to update it.

"This will be a process of over a year, but the current election code that we have is 20 years old and needs updating.

We will be looking to

include things like mail in ballots."

He said they also plan to investigate a new government structure to better represent all the members of Lake Babine Nation.

"We currently have a chief and council for three communities, Woyenne, Tachet and Fort Babine, representing a nation of 2500 people.”

Over 1000 more members live off reserve in areas like Smithers right down to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver, so chief and council feel that they need a structure that is more in tune with where people live, rather than just representing the three communities.

“This is something that Lake Babine Nation has been looking at for a long time and now that we have the finances in order we can fully concentrate on this," he added.

Editor: An erroneous statement, attributed to Comfor Management Services Ltd. (CMSL) president, Quinten Beach, appeared in the Lakes District News edition of July 7, 2012.

Since inception, Dawn Stronstad has worked as the coordinator of the Lakes Outdoor Recreation Society (LORS) and is not a member of the LORS society.

CMSL has approved 60 hours per year of Dawn’s time since 2002 to assist with the coordination of LORS activities, that being the maintenance of 28 recreational sites, four hiking trails and two provincial campgrounds

in the lakes timber supply area.

This year, because it was noted that LORS was not using all the hours donated, a more realistic 20 hours of her time was approved by the CMSL board.

It was because of CMSL, LORS was first formed.

In 2001 the previous CMSL manager, Ken Guenther, noted that provincial camp grounds were being decommissioned and provincial funding had been withdrawn from recreation sites.

At that time the CMSL board asked for volunteers to form a society and pledged the board’s support by offering coordination and funding. It was noted that the

closure of these sites would be a great loss to the community and surrounding area.

Since, the level of financial assistance from CMSL has ebbed and flowed depending on the resources and funding LORS was able to access from other sources. The coordination time has always remained the same until this year.

These hours, and CMSL's financial support, has always been appreciated by LORS and, I’m sure, by the many people who use the sites and campgrounds.

It’s not just wood burning anymore Editor: As I watched the thick, black smoke pour from the Houston pellet mill on July 10, I realized what the secret ingredient is that causes these horrendous explosions and fires.

When a pine tree is attacked by mountain pine beetles, it releases a tremendous amount of pitch, commonly referred to as a 'pitch-out', which typically saves the tree from a small number of these invaders.

When it is attacked by a large number of beetles, it's defences do not save it and it dies anyway, leaving the tree full of pitch.

As these trees slowly dry and harden, this pitch hardens too and that is what is mixed with the dust now.

Before this, most of these trees were still too wet, and the pitch stayed in larger, not so burnable particles, but now that the resins have hardened enough to be 'ground up' along with the finer dusts that are produced, it is a nearly perfect flammable substance; wood and something that burns like hot tar.

One only has to look at the blackness of the smoke produced to determine that it's not just wood burning anymore.

Had a great holiday back to the old home place

Here I am once more back with my news.

Nice to take a week’s holidays but it’s nice to be home again.

It was great to go back to the old home place and on the Eyehill Creek in Saskatchewan.

The old house is still standing and also the barn. It’s amazing as it’s now all most 100 years old.

Our little old town of Evesham just has a few homes, very nice homes, but all the stores and business places are all gone. So many of the little prairie towns are no more. It’s kind of sad as a kid I well remember how busy our little town used to be.

The reason for my trip was to attend the wedding of two of my very dear friends who are married in Macklin, the next town to Evesham.

Because of the oil Macklin is a prosperous town and still going ahead. I was so fortunate to be able to stay with my granddaughter Aryn and her husband Reza Khan in Edmonton and from there we drove to Macklin for the wedding.

It was a lovely wedding and so many great folks that made us so welcome. We stayed with friends again who made us so welcome.

They gave me a few minutes to explain who I was and tell them I was born in Macklin hospital 90 ago and took most of my education in Evesham school also my dad took up the eyehill place in 1905.

As they say time flies. There was only one lady who remembered me as we went to school together and

we sang a duet for the Christmas concert, now a lifetime ago. Although our time was short we drove around looking at the huge stacks of last years hay.

I asked a lady why so much hay was stacked up from last year and she told me lots of the farmers ranchers let the stock feed out all winter as it was so mild.

It was all such a wonderful visit and I wish to thank my family for their love and making this trip possible for me.

Looking back I am going to go back a bit and mention the Mouse Mountain Days 2012. This was the Fraser lake first of July celebration. What a great show three day

event. There was so much going. Bryan and Lone Spur were asked to take a small part which went over very well. I think this is the fourth year we have entertained at Fraser Lake.

They are all very nice people there and it’s nice to go back again every year.

This is also a reminder that the Grassy Plains bluegrass celebration will be coming up real soon. This will be a great show as there will be some top of the line entertainers so don’t forget you will enjoy.

The dates are July 27, 28 and 29.

Air quality In our last paper the good news is Pinnacle Pellet’s air quality questioned again. Why is this going on so long?

There is a problem and it has to be fixed so let’s get it fixed rather sooner than later.

To have clean air is so important for the present as well as the future. Yes this plant is important to the welfare

of our town but they are like any one else big or small must stay within the guidelines that have been set out for clean air and because of its size must not be allowed to slip between the cracks.

Seems Burns Lake gets hit below the belt again with the layoffs at the Endako.

This will no doubt hit the town too. It’s also tough on the summer students as they no doubt were depending on summer work. Now with the mill and the mine going it’s going to be a lean summer for them.

Trip home My son in-law Rick Hunter met me in Edmonton to bring me home. One thing we noticed was the increase in the heavy truck traffic. Most all of these big units would have to come through Burns Lake.

The Yellowhead is a Trans Canada highway and as time goes on it’s going to get more

and more heavy traffic. There are a number of ideas and plans that have come up but they are not getting to the root of the problem.

These transport trucks are getting larger, hauling bigger loads and getting more as time goes on.

You may make the streets more beautiful, put up more lights etc., make things more confusing for the business folk but the sharp corners are not going to change so you must get the heavy truck traffic onto another route other than the main street of Burns Lake.

This will be a huge and expensive thing you will have to tackle but it’s there and it just has to be fixed.

The truck traffic will continue and increase as time goes on, it’s up to you to face it head on not next year but start now, it’s so important.

Who is responsible for this major change that must be faced, Dept. of Highways or

the village council, but somebody will have to be.

Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree but I think not.

Editor: Approximately two weeks ago, the Burns Lake community forest announced plans to begin the restructuring of the organization.

This communication is intended to provide some additional information to the public regarding the current situation and to provide information about the future of the organization.

Changes are required for the organization to survive in the long term. The board believes that the community forest will need to be able to more quickly react to numerous changes in the forest industry that are coming.

The organization needs to become more cost efficient and be able to make changes quickly, without the high fiscal cost of the

current model.

The regional timber supply is decreasing, the market value of timber is decreasing and costs are rising.

It is time for dramatic change at Comfor to be able to respond more effectively to these changes.

More changes will be made as the board continues to restructure the organization in order to make it more efficient and nimble.

These changes need to be made for the benefit of the company and the community.

The board has begun a process of examining in detail, all of the activities of the community forest and related businesses. The board will conduct a cost benefit analysis of each part of the organization to determine how it fits into the long term goals for the

the complete approval of the Vanderhoof Unit staff as a large majority of their patients will be going on to Prince George for radiation.

Radiation therapy is normally given Monday to Friday for a few minutes daily, sometimes for weeks on end, and the daily traveling is just not feasible for out of town patients.

Our fundraising is still going full steam ahead. Upcoming events include a giant garage sale to take place July 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the parking lot at Fields store in Fraser Lake.

There you won’t find

anything with a price tag on it. All items will be by donation.

Half of the 74 single family homes sold so far this year, sold for less than $250,000 and took, on average, 75 days to sell. As of June 30 there was 193 properties for sale in the Smithers area.

Sales have increased in the Vanderhoof area

with 54 sales worth $10.7 million occurring in the first six months of the year, compared to 36 sales worth $6.8 million to June 30, 2011.

As of June 30, 2012, there was 173 properties of all types for sale in the Vanderhoof area.

Fort St. James has seen a slight decrease in property sales, with 17 properties worth $3.6 million selling in the area so far this year, compared with 22 properties worth $3.2 million in the first six

months of 2011.

At the end of June there were 65 properties for sale in the Fort St. James area.

Property sales in Prince George have dramatically increased this year with 659 properties worth $154.7 million changing hands so far, compared with 592 properties worth $136.3 million in the first six months of last year. At the end of June there was 793 properties of all types available for purchase in Prince George.

The board recognizes this is a dramatic change of direction for the community forest but the process was begun with the intention of continuing to meet the mandate set out by the community.

Both Kager Lake and Boer Mountain are B.C. recreation sites and according to Kevin Eskelin, Recreation Sites and Trails district recreation officer, the Kager Lake recreation site is managed locally, under an agreement with Recreation Sites and Trails, by the Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association. (BLMBA) He said Recreation Sites and Trails has made a capital investment of approximately $150,000 to the Boer Mountain area, which includes the Kager Lake site, over the past four years.

"This money has been used for trail building and for leveraging external grants for trail building, signage, planting, infrastructure such as outhouses, a dock, a deck, picnic tables, fire rings, maps and other improvements."

Part of this investment was the recent addition of vehicle camping at Kager Lake.

Lynn Synotte, Lakes Outdoor Recreation Society (LORS) president said the Kager Lake camp sites and surrounding trails are an example of what community volunteers, partnering with government and other funders, can accomplish to showcase the recreational potential of the local area.

"The trails are well used in all seasons and the further enhancement of trails and the campsite expands the diversity of the area. Hikers, bike riders, cross country skiers, snow shoers, kayakers, canoeists, campers and many other users have benefitted from this development," Synotte said, adding that she feels recreational opportunities, like the Kager Lake camp site adds to the attraction and retention of families and professionals in the community.

Eskelin said that all aspects of the Boer Mountain based projects and stewardship of the area has been a collaboration between Burns Lake Community Forest, BLMBA, and LORS. Synotte added, "I must acknowledge the vision, leadership, dedication and skills of BLMBA volunteers and the many people that assisted BLMBA. They have committed hours of time to the establishment of this world-class facility."

Theatre back on track REBECCA BILLARD

The Beacon Theatre was temporarily closed for a couple of days recently due to a coolant pump failure in the Christie 2210 projector.

According to Michael Riis-Christianson, member of the Lakes District Film Society who own and operate the community theatre, the problem is uncommon, but not unheard of.

Riis-Christianson said a replacement part was flown into Kamloops and was then brought to Burns Lake by a representative of Maximum Project Management, the company that services the theatre's equipment.

"The failure resulted in us canceling showings of Brave on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

We reopened Monday [July 9, 2012]," he said.

"The society had

hoped to screen the movie Brave for another week, but unfortunately, Sony Pictures Releasing Inc., the company that is marketing The Amazing Spiderman, will not allow us to do this."

Riis-Christianson said he apologizes to the community for the inconvenience, and hopes that everyone enjoys the upcoming screenings of this summer’s blockbuster, The Amazing Spiderman.

Wildfire conditions in the North

Warnings issued in the wake of hot, dry weather REBECCA BILLARD

Grand opening of the Burns Lake and District Chamber of Commerce on July 20 at 1 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony and cake to follow.

While Northern B.C. has not been a hot spot for fire activity this season, the North West Fire Centre is urging locals to be extra cautious with burning activities as the North heats up.

While there is currently no fires burning in the Northwest, hot and dry conditions over the past two weeks have increased the risk of wildfires.

A burning ban is currently in place in the Northwest region for all medium and large sized open fires.

This prohibits burning waste, slash or other material, whether piled or unpiled, that is larger than half a metre in height or half a metre in width.

Burning more than

two piles of waste or slash of any size, burning grass and fireworks of any size or description is banned.

The ban covers all B.C. parks, Crown and private lands but does not include camp fires or gas or propane cooking stoves, or briquettes.

People lighting a campfire must maintain a fire guard and must have at least eight litres of water available nearby.

Residents of the Village of Burns Lake are required to apply for a permit for campfires or to burn yard waste from the Village of Burns Lake.

Permits are free of charge and apply for two weeks, however village fire chief Jim McBride has requested the village forgo issuing burning permits to the public, due to the current weather conditions.

Lindsay Carnes, fire information officer from the Northwest Fire Centre said people should to be extra cautious due to

an extended forecast of dry and warm weather in the region.

"Even though it has been a quiet forest fire season so far, people should not become complacent about campfire use, or open fires," she said.

According to Carnes, when burning is permitted, it should only be done away from branches, wood and other combustible materials and enough people, water and tools should be on hand to control the fire and prevent it from escaping.

"Never burn in windy conditions, since weather conditions can change quickly and carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires," she said.

Never leave a fire unattended and make sure that the fire is completely extinguished and the embers are cold before leaving the area.

Burns Lake Native Development Corporation (BLNDC)

has started a bursary in the names of the late Carl Charlie and Robert Luggi, Babine Forest Products employees that sadly passed away in Jan. 20, 2012.

Late last week there was a rumor about a possible in-app proxy hack that would allow owners of Apple iDevices to make in-app purchases without actually having to pay for them. This rumor turned out to be true, and it looks like Apple has been scrambling to shut it down since the weekend. The hack exploits a weakness in Apple’s in-app purchasing requests by re-directing them to another server that gives the “ok” to the purchase, without actually running the request through iTunes and charging for it. The hack’s creator, Alexey Borodin, has already recorded over 30,000 “purchases” that have been approved by his servers.

Though Apple did manage to shut down Borodin’s server in Russia, the hacker has already hosted a new server elsewhere. Anyone interested in using this service should be wary, however. Part of the process involves routing your Internet traffic through an untrusted DNS server, which could allow anyone with access to it to monitor your web traffic and steal account information for banking websites, Facebook accounts, etc. As usual, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Featuring the spirit of the local people LDM and Village of Granisle join forces Lakes District Maintenance donate staff time and equipment to Granisle community project REBECCA BILLARD Lakes District Maintenance Ltd. (LDM) has extended a helping hand to the Village of Granisle to assist with the development of a community park and band shell area.

Sharon Smith, chief administrative officer for the Village of Granisle said the project will also provide an accessible community gathering space. "It will be the welcoming centerpiece within a vibrant green space network," she said.

The partnership between LDM and the Village of Granisle was formed as part of a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure annual initiative to help with community enhancement projects.

During 2011 the ministry launched the initiative and at that time, approached LDM and other highways maintenance contractors across the province with the idea of teaming up with local communities to help move community enhancement projects forward.

According to Steve Gailing, LDM's operations manager, during 2011 the company played a key role in the

initiative by teaming up with the Village of Burns Lake for the remediation of the Radley Beach area.

This year, LDM decided to team up with the Village of Granisle for their project.

According to Smith, the Village of Granisle has been exploring opportunities to encourage community participation for local residents and they think the community park project will encourage locals to get out and about.

"This project will provide connectivity from the village to the waterfront through a variety of paths that will meander throughout the park, joining with trails along the waterfront and connecting to a beach area.

These pathways will provide an opportunity for residents of all ages to increase their physical activity in an enjoyable outdoor setting," she said.

Once constructed, the park will have a band shell which Smith said, will be a focal point for outdoor community entertainment and events.

She said the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012.

On July 10, 2012, New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle parked at Gull Creek.

RCMP confirmed the vehicle had been parked at the entrance of the Whiskey Creek Trail since July 5, 2012.

Sill had told family and friends that he would be exploring for four to five days, but RCMP learned that he

was not a seasoned outdoors man and search and rescue were contacted.

The search for Sill is still ongoing.

Search and rescue along with RCMP police dog services, a local helicopter and a number of volunteers are searching the vast forest which is described as dense as very challenging.
