THE NEWS Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition

PQBNEWS.COM

30th Anniversary of competition celebrated Since 1982 Parksville beach and community park has played host to sand sculpting competitions and to celebrate this 30-year milestone, the Parksville Beach Festival Society has a fantastic array of events planned from mid-July to mid-August! The ever-popular Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition takes place July 13-15 with the Exhibition open until August 19. Master Sand sculptors from Australia, Spain, United States, Mexico and Canada are coming to participate in this year’s competition. They will have 24 hours over three days to create their masterpieces from just sand and water, competing for a guaranteed spot at the world championships in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. They will prepare their sculpting bases on Friday, July 13 and the carving will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The public can witness the architecture and creativity immerse from the sand. The official opening begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14 with ribbon cutting just outside the sculpting zone gates. Their masterpieces are to be completed by Sunday, July 15 at 3 p.m. and the winners will be announced after judging is complete at 5:30. The gate will remain open until 9 p.m. and throughout the exhibition (until August 19); the hours will be 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. Admission is by suggested donation of $2.50 per person. Attendance at the event was over 82,000 in 2011 and event manager Trish Smith said there is reason to be optimistic they will break the 100,000 milestone this year as they have added one more week to the exhibition, allowing visitors five weeks to see the sand sculptures. Smith said attendance depends quite a bit on the weather, but this year the focus is on providing more entertainment and other draws in the park throughout the extended five week-long event to give people more to do while they're there and more reasons to return. To celebrate 30 years of sand sculpting in Parksville, the larger sandpit adjacent to the sculpting zone will be the site of Parksville’s first ever, communityFriday, July 13, 2012

built sand sculpture during the opening weekend, July 13-15. Thanks to the generosity of Coastal Community Credit Union to help pay for two experienced sculptors, teens and adults are invited to learn how to sculpt sand and make history by participating in this unique opportunity. This event is geared at teens

Jayden Holman is a 16-year-old singersongwriter from Nanaimo. and adults because of the patience required to complete the detailed work. Younger children can have fun in their own pile of ‘special’ sand! Teens and adults can ‘drop in’ for 30 minutes or stay for two days to help complete the masterpiece! There will be a large detailed sculpture to work on or individuals can create their own smaller masterpieces. Sculpting will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. Who knows what amazing creation will result from such a wonderful collaboration? Artisans at the Beach will return to

the Parksville Community Park on July 28 & 29. Smith reported that last year’s single day event drew thousands of visitors to the park to shop for unique hand-made items, so this year they expanded the event to two days. Over 50 artisans from all over Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands have pre-registered to showcase their creative talents and products. Items range from jewelry, clothing and stained glass to paintings, metal art and photography. The artisans and food vendors will be located on the kite field next to the beach, and scattered throughout the gardens by the tennis courts. The event will run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day. Beach Festival organizers wanted to offer more entertainment, not just exclusively on weekends, so they have booked 35 days of free entertainment at the Parksville Beach waterfront gazebo for every day of the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Exhibition. The talent will be quite varied, ranging from comedy, illusion and marimba to folk, pop and Latin. Smith reported that they also have two incredibly talented emerging artists that the Beach Festival is excited to showcase. Karly Summers is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter that delivers a fresh mix of poppy, yet sophisticated acoustic rock and Jayden Holman is a 16-year-old singer-songwriter from Nanaimo that will likely become the next Justin Bieber. Yoga on the Beach will take place every Sunday at 8:30 a.m., accompanied by Peter Jack Rainbird on instrumental guitar. Local artist MONK will be offering FREE painting lessons, and you can also learn how to Zumba or play the Ukulele. On August 4 children can participate in a real treasure hunt with pirates (eye patches and maps provided), followed by a brilliant light show of fire spinning, juggling and acrobatics. There will be an 80’s Beach Party on August 11 with prizes awarded for best 80’s outfits and star-look alikes. For a complete schedule of entertainment, please visit the Beach Festival website at www. parksvillebeachfest.ca. — News Staff

A competitor sprays the sand with weather screen, a mixture of white wood glue and water. - Steven Heywood photo

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Do we use special sand? Yes! The special sand is delivered to the site as the competitors begin to arrive in town. The regular beach sand can not be used for a couple of reasons: First, competitors need sand that is very fine (2mm grain) and it must be free of seaweed, pebbles, bits of shell, etc., to prevent faults in the sculptures. Also, the Parksville Beach is right at sea level - and tidal - so if the competitors attempted to dig 10 or 20 yards of sand out of our beach, they'd be neck-deep in water before they even start building. The Beach Festival Society imports the sand from a local supplier, Ozero Sand & Gravel, who has washed and graded the end product.

How much sand do the competitors receive? Each soloist receives 10 yards of sand on a 15' x 15' plot and the teams of up to six get 20 yards and a 30' x 30' plot. The sculptors can use the sand within the plot and water available on site, nothing more. No non-beach decorative Friday, July 13, 2012

material, artificial colours, paints, flour, sugar, cement or adhesives are permitted. All of the sand must be utilized in the creation of their artwork.

What keeps the sculpture together? This is a good one - we've heard some pretty funny theories about this one cement!! (wrong), hairspray!! (wrong). The REAL answer is - AFTER (and only after) the sculptures are completed they are sprayed with a diluted mixture of 20 percent environmentally-friendly white glue (like the glue kids use at school) and 80 percent water. After the sculptors have finished carving particular elements they are asked to spray their completed sculptures with this weather screen mixture from the top down, and it must be coated at least once before their sculpture can be judged. Beach Festival staff will continue to spray the sculptures twice a day for the first week after the competition. This builds up a fine crust or coating, allowing them to withstand wind and rain for five weeks during the exhibition.

How do they build the sculptures so high? Wood or plastic forms may be used to gain height, built up on the "wedding cake" principle. Forms are used during the building and pound-up stage on Friday and the sand ‘sets’ in them overnight. They next day they remove the highest form and carve the packed sand while they are still standing on the form below it. Once they’ve carved the top, they then take away the next form and carve that sand. They continue like this until they’ve reached the ground.

How long do the competitors have to finish the competition? In our competition, the time limit is 24 hours - over 3 days.

What are the wires sticking out of the tops of the sculptures? The wires are inserted to keep birds from landing on the sculptures, so that they can stay on exhibit for five weeks.

The Sandboxers Sand Sculpting team from Victoria won 1st place at the 2011 Championships. - Submitted

Sculpting Competitors come to Parksville Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition event manager Trish Smith said the sculptors love to come to Parksville, not only for the competition and chance at the world championships, but because of the city and the way they're treated while here. "We take good care of them. We pay for their travel and accommodations, give them a $500 stipend just to take part, and then there's the prize money," she said. The cash prizes this year total $32,000, including a top prize of $8,000 to the winning team and $4,100 to the top individual. Each of the three teams wins prize money as do the top five soloists. The organizers also drive the sculptors around, feed them and leave them with nothing to worry about but their craft. In order to find the sculptors the Parksville Beach Festival sends out an open invitation to anyone who has expressed interest in coming, as well as to all of the sculptors who have participat-

ed in past years. They also notify other sand sculpting competition organizers to help spread the word that Parksville is looking for applicants. “We allow the sculptors six weeks to send in their applications and then select the teams and soloists based on the cost to bring them here, the quality of their work, the awards they have received, and their references.” This year the teams selected are Cutting Edge from Parksville, the Orbital Sanders from Seattle and the Sand Boxers from Victoria. For soloists, there is only one individual from Vancouver Island this year — from Victoria. There are four other B.C. solo entries, one competitor from Québec and one from Prince Edward Island. Other soloists are coming from México, the USA, Spain and Australia.

Soloists: Abram Waterman, PEI Abe has been sculpting for 10 years and has won many awards. He loves the camaraderie of hanging out with the other sculptors. He feels the biggest

challenge is completing the sculpture in the time allotted but he says the actual carving is easier than you would think. You just have to practice in order to improve.

Bill Dow, Billings, MT Bill was born in the center of Montana before the turn of the century, and wandered aimlessly for 40 years until he discovered sand sculpture while living in Seattle in 1991. His team entered two contests that year: Parksville ('Tide's out!), and Harrison Hot Springs (World Championships) winning the latter. Bill turned 'pro' in 1996 while living in Utah and hasn't looked back. Bill has travelled far and wide, and has made many sand friends in many countries. Bill says he loves the sand as an artistic medium - except when it doesn't do what he wants!, and he doesn't plan on quitting any time soon.

tain Resort at Rancho de la Sierra private estate. He met Joe Maize, who invited Brett to the U.S. Open in Imperial Beach, California where they won. Two months later they won the Architectural prize at the World Championships in Harrison Hot Springs. Brett continued doing contests and exhibitions and was invited to participate with 80 carvers from around the World, in a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest and tallest sand sculpture in San Diego. He has competed in the Canary Islands, Canada, United States and México, and placed in numerous contests. He has also competed in Ice and Snow carving in Canada, Russia and the U.S.

Bruce Waugh, Langley, BC Bruce has placed in the top five or won the People’s Choice award at the Parksville competition in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Snow carving and pumpkin sculpting awards can also be seen on Bruce's wall. These huge gourds weigh up to 1,500 lbs. and can be sculpted with great detail. Bruce has been sculpting

sand, snow and pumpkins for 25 years and still loves the attention that it gets him. He says, "Part athletic endurance and a combination of artistic skills and the love of the performance - makes for a wonderful experience for the viewer".

Craig Mutch, Vancouver, BC Craig Mutch is a master artist who wears many hats, some of which include sand sculpture, ice, snow and wood carving as well as professional photography for over 25 years. Sand is not the only medium he has mastered – snow, wood and ice sculpting are just as exhilarating. In 2008, he participated in a three city, six week ice sculpture festival in Europe. Craig has also worked within the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada and in 2011, produced a Megamind log carving for the movie industry. It is the travel and new mediums that inspire his passion as an artist. The institution of sculptors around the world is invaluable.

He co-owns Ephemeral Arts Ltd which builds sculpture events, sculpts in his studio and is a carpentry contractor. www.sculptureducharme.com.

Delayne Corbett, Vancouver, BC Born in Nelson, BC, Delayne Corbett grew up all across Canada. The abundant nature and raw materials like wood, stone, ice, snow and sand guided him early onto a creative path. Throughout his life he has explored many mediums, always creating something new. His passion is working with stone to create sensual sculptures. He is a recognized ice, snow and sand artist, and often travels abroad to work on large projects. His home time is consumed by either working in his studio or teaching workshops and demonstrating sculpture at events. He has been sculpting stone for 23 years, ice and snow for 13 years, and sand for six years.

Guy-Olivier Deveau, Québec, QC A sand and ice sculptor from Québec City, Guy has been sculpting on a professional level for about four years and has showcased his talent and art in many countries of North and South America, as well as Europe. He often likes to create art that is scary or creepy, but don't worry, he says he's a very sane person!

Fred Dobbs, Victoria, BC Fred began sand sculpting at the tender age of five on a beach near Dublin, Ireland. Buried waist deep in sand, Fred was to become part of a sand collaboration where he and his Father crafted a convertible sand car, with Fred in the driver’s seat creating the steering wheel and dashboard, and his Father fashioning the body on the outside. Fred has won titles in the Canadian, US Open, and World Championship of sand sculpting. In 1993, in collaboration with Team 'Totally in Sand', Freddie and the Sandblasters were recognized in the Guinness Book of records for the tallest sand sculpture in a 100 working man hour category. At present, Fred balances his sand sculpting career with

his fine art projects where he works in more permanent mediums like bronze, bronze polymers, and concrete.

Jeff Strong, Tacoma, WA Jeff began sand sculpting 12 years ago when he met and began training with master sculptor Michael Velling. His first solo awards came in 2004 when he placed first in the semi-pro division and won the people’s choice award in Seaside, Oregon. His solo sculpture of a dragon devouring a sand sculptor “went viral” on the Internet, and for some time was the first photo returned by searching Google for “Sand Sculpture." The sculpture won two awards in the 2005 Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville – Third Place, and People’s Choice. In 2006 he returned to Parksville with the “Orbital Sanders” team, winning First Place and Sculptor’s Choice awards. Jeff has competed in five World Championships.

Karen Fralich, Burlington, ON Karen has been creating sand sculptures for 18 years, beginning her sculpting career at age 14 in a pottery studio

in Guelph, Ontario in 1983. In 1994, a professional sand sculptor invited her to help him on a small sand sculpture in a local mall. Karen was immediately addicted and spent the next four years learning the rudiments of sand sculpture while still working full time in restaurants, clothing sales and mascot costume construction. In 1998 she entered her first international contest and by 2001 she was working full time as a free-lance sculptor. Her work takes her around the world, collaborating with her large extended family of wonderful sculptor friends. To date, Karen has competed in 92 Masters Level International sand sculpture contests. She is a four time World Champion and four time North American Champion. She is the only woman to ever win the Solo World Championships.

Laurie Tournoux, Navarre, OH Mother of two college age daughters and tax administrator for a municipal government by day, Laurie has been dubbed the “Logo Queen” on the sand circuit by her peers. Most of the sponsor logo replications are for businesses. Continued on Page 14 Friday, July 13, 2012

THE NEWS Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition

Continued from Page 11 In addition, she helps run a lucrative Excavating business with her “better half." Laurie has been carving sand for 10+ years professionally on a part-time basis. She has adapted her 20 years of painting and clay sculpting to the sand pit. There are no “schools” in the trade of sand sculpting. Much of the learning techniques are learned by another Master Sculptor, many shovelfuls of sand, and hundreds of hours of practice. Laurie travels and competes when time allows. A few of these places are Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia Beach (4th place), Maine and Parksville. She has appeared on CNN and the Travel Channel, and a few of her sand logos have been seen on national commercials. She has had many speaking engagements on Relaxation (sand) and Taxation (normal job) – Life in a Balance.

Mélineige Beauregard, St-Hippolyte, QC Mélineige has been sculpting since

her father took her to a snow sculpting competition in Québec in 1998. She began carving sand in 2001 and ice in 2007. Now the owner of a sand, snow and ice company, Mélineige has entered more than 25 competitions and has placed more than 20 times, 10 being 1st place. Mélineige says she enjoys traveling around the world creating beauty and bringing smiles and happiness to everyone.

Natasha Kamenskaia, Frankston, VIC, Australia Born in Russia, in the city of Moscow, Natasha moved to Australia in 1992 graduating in 2004 from Victorian College of The Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture. In 2009 she went to Berlin and participated in the USF World Solo Championship. In 2012 Natasha placed 3rd at Surfers Paradise, the Australian National Sand Sculpting Championship. She currently runs The Blue Tongue Lizard Art Studio and holds exhibits in Australian galleries as a woodcarving and paper-mache artist.

Paul Blane, Malaga, Spain Paul has been creating sand sculptures for eight years and loves it as much now as the day he started. He has worked in many beautiful places with many hospitable and generous hosts and has found that a sand sculpture has a unique way of reaching the heart of the most diverse of people. Paul says having studied philosophy and psychology at university, he has always had a real interest in people and what makes them do what they do. At present, "I can make a sculpture and by the end of the day thousands of people will have immediately opened up to me as if we were old friends." Paul says he is working in a discipline in which he will never stop learning, in which he can influence people’s primal experiences of art, not to mention, no boss, no fixed hours, no material costs, no stock costs, no selling, no electricity or water bills, no fixed location, travel, beaches, sun and bikinis. Paul believes he has found himself the perfect job.

2011 winning solo entry, carved by Edith van de Wetering from Holland. - Craig Carmichael photo

The Sand Boxers Sand sculpting team are one of the longest running sand sculpting teams in the world. Mike Hearst founded the team in 1992 after a brief time carving sand with Freddy and the Sandblasters. The Sand Boxers sand sculpting team was founded in 1992 for the purpose of having fun on the beach but quickly transformed into a world class competitive team. They competed for 10 years, winning the Canadian open title many times, and in 2004 they won their first World championship Gold plus Best Architecture and People's Choice. The Sand Boxers have since gone on to win four world championship gold medals and they are the current Canadian Open team champions. Team member Damon Langlois is the current Solo World Champion of Sand Sculpture. Their motivation to carve sand together is still to have fun on the beach!

The Orbital Sanders, Seattle, WA The Orbital Sanders is a sand sculpting team based in Seattle, Washington, and has been active on the Sand Sculpt-

ing circuit since 1985. They are known for very original, creative and humorous designs that suggest a story is being told before your very eyes. The names of their sculptures make use of “bad puns” and “twists-on-words.” On occasion, they even carve in costume to reinforce the theme of their sculpture. The goal is to delight and entertain the viewer, and have fun with the sand. They are made up of a group of architects, landscape architects, planners, and artists. Some of these old guys are now retired. The Orbital Sanders have won over 70 awards in sand sculpture competitions in North America. They have also done sand sculptures for two television commercials and participated in two world record attempts. They love the challenge of working with the limitations of the medium. They say the biggest challenge is in keeping it from falling down and their biggest tip is to observe others, and practice!

They love how it is a family friendly hobby, how it occurs in the outdoors during summer, the natural beauty of the completed work, the unique difficulty, and the look on the spectators’ faces. Their biggest challenge is creating an accurate representation of a recognizable object while facing the gravitational limitations of sand. Their advice for amateurs is to not be afraid of risk; it’s the fine details that make the piece. — News Staff

Diamond sponsors will have the privilege of having their logos carved in sand by the Director of the World Championship of Sand Sculpting, Charlie Beaulieu. - Beachfest Society

Volunteers make sculpting competition go While a lot of work goes into an event the size of Parksville's Annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition, event manager Trish Smith says the event always has a lot of support from the community. The Society is greatly appreciative of the significant support received annually from local businesses through cash and in-kind sponsorships, and over 300 volunteers assist throughout the summer with set up and tear down, Lunch with the Castles, Beach Fest special events, selling souvenirs, and greeting visitors at the entrance to the sand sculpting site. Each year non-profit groups can apply to help out at the entrance gate in exchange for a share in the donations collected. Selecting which groups to use is troublesome as there are so many incredible organizations that do such wonderful work in the community. They try to select philanthropic groups based on financial need and how they give back to the local community. Last year 12 participating non-profit organizations shared $36,000 in dona-

tions, making it the biggest source of income for some of these groups, which are expected to provide six volunteers for each of about seven shifts and attend a volunteer orientation. This year the public will be greeted by the smiling faces of the following non-profit groups: Arrowsmith Search and Rescue Fraternal Order of Eagles Knights of Columbus – Ascension Council 7991 Ladies Auxiliary Legion #211 Bowser Ladies Auxiliary Legion Branch 49

Lions Club of Parksville, Parksville Lioness Club, Parksville Curling Club Parksville Qualicum Elks #589 Parksville Qualicum Shrine Club #34 Preceptor Delta Zeta Rotary Club of Parksville (Noon hour) Rotary Club of Parksville AM Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise Xi Delta Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi When you see them, please thank them for helping out, for without them, we wouldn’t have a Beach Festival. — Auren Ruvinsky

Judging the best sand sculptures The judges look for a wide variety of things when judging the work of the internationally renowned sand sculptors. They look for an overall "wow factor," based on general impressions, whether funny, clever, or unusual carving techniques, as well as more nuanced and detailed factors. They look at overall sand use, did they use all the sand provided? — as well as artistic merit, consistency, accurate proportions, illusion of movement, expres-

sive faces and details. They judge the general balance of the design along with the use of shapes, shadows, originality, creativity and a consistent theme. Judges also look at technical difficulty, scrutinizing the use of impossible looking overhangs, cut-throughs, height, hollowing out, arches and delicate narrow elements, along with the sculptor's general control of the sand. They also deduct points for any violations of the rules. — Auren Ruvinsky Friday, July 13, 2012

A children's sandcastle competition is part of Kidfest. - Steven Heywood photo

Fun events at Parksville beach this summer There are a number of fun summer events that take place in Parksville’s Community Park that are organized by various organizations outside of the Parksville Beach Festival Society.

Sunset Cinema in the Park Coastal Community Credit Union invites you to enjoy Sunset Cinema in the Park on Tuesday, July 17. This is the chance to enjoy a warm summer evening with the family and watch ‘Rio’ outdoors on a giant 3-storey inflatable screen! Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted to the Success by Six childhood initiative. There will be popcorn, cotton candy and glow bracelets for sale. So grab a lawn chair or blanket and gather at dusk in the Parksville Community Park.

Lions International Kite Festival Kite enthusiasts from far and wide will gather in Parksville Community Park, July 21 and 22 for the Parksville Lions International Kite Festival. The park will be full of food concessions, vendors and a wide variety of kite experts teaching people how to build and fly kites of all descriptions. There will be kite flying demonstrations, kite building and Friday, July 13, 2012

the ever popular Teddy Bear Drop. For more info check out their website at members.shaw.ca/parksvillekitefest.

Oceanside Overdrive The Oceanside Overdrive Car Show is one of the biggest car events on the Island with nearly 400 cars and about 8,000 car fans who come to Parksville Beach every year. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, August 5. Food vendors, car-affiliated vendors and a D.J. will play classic car tunes throughout the day. More info can be obtained by contacting AJ Rose at 250-927-9213.

KidFest Parksville's famous expanse of sand is often dotted with great works of sand art throughout the summer, but expect a dramatic proliferation on Sunday, August 19. Hundreds of kids will hit the beach that day as part of KidFest and the Quality Foods Children's Sandcastle Competition. The fun begins at sundown Saturday night with the Quality Foods Festival of Lights fireworks, simulcast to music on 88.5FM The Beach. The busy day Sunday includes the 20th annual KidFest on the big field, full of vendors, community booths, live en-

tertainment and many activities for the whole family. Children can have their face painted, hair sprayed, be tattooed, play games, create crafts, learn about nature and be entertained by a host of favourite children's performers. Things kick off at 10 a.m. with live performers running through the day to 3 p.m. including Tickles the Clown, Craig McKee, Jake West, Kumbana Marimba, Jangano and Gerry Barnum. For more information check out www.kidfest.ca.

Quality Foods Children's Sandcastle Competition Sunday morning registration for the Quality Foods Children's Sandcastle Competition on the beach starts at 9:30 a.m. and the building starts at exactly 11 a.m. The event is free but children must be registered by 10:30 a.m. The oldest in each group determines the age category (6 & under, 7 to 9 or 10 to 12), with up to four per team. The strict number one rule is listed as "all teams must have fun." They will have 30 to 90 minutes, depending on age, and there are many great prizes along with goody bags for everyone. — News Staff
