Donations made by the hospital auxiliary and Scandinavian Society totalling $150,000 have been used to purchase equipment to perform the surgeries.

With the help of the hospital auxiliary’s $100,000 donation and the Scandinavian Society’s $50,000 donation, the hospital was able to make much needed upgrades, which also meant training sessions.

Operating room nurses were invited to an operating room in Vanderhoof to see

an operating room of comparable size and see how they kept it organized.

The nurses also took a trip to Prince George to be trained properly in the cleaning and sanitization of these new tools.

Since the equipment is expensive, and very fragile, the cleaning process is very tedious to ensure careful handling.

Northern Health’s Health Services Administrator in Quesnel, Margaret Sadlon, said the new equipment is a great way to entice some of Nelson’s colleagues to the area. “We’ve had

conversations about some of his coworkers from Prince George possibly coming to do surgeries as well,� she explained. “They’re all so impressed with this brand new, top of the line equipment. It shows us that if we buy it, they will come.�

The first surgeries using the new equipment were performed June 7 and Nelson hopes to add bigger knee repairs and possible shoulder surgeries as well to the list offered in Quesnel.

An innovative fundraiser involving Northern Strike Paintball and Quesnel City Council has resulted in a donation of more than $1,800 being made to Big Brothers Big Sisters Quesnel.

Members of Northern Strike and city council raised pledges and took part in a fast-paced paintball game.

One team was tasked with escorting Mayor Mary Sjostrom through the playing area, while the other team (including members of city council) was on a mission to ambush the Mayor and her security detail.

“We know that Big Brothers Big Sisters Quesnel needs support, so we felt this would be a new way to raise funds for their organization,” said Northern Strike Paintball President Peter Bond.

DANIKA HÉBERT Observer Reporter Jessica Voight decided to add the Miss Quesnel Self Development program to her already busy schedule to help the community.

“I’m already an active member of the community and I thought the program was a great way to do more,” she said.

Voight added the program’s range of events to her busy volleyball schedule and admitted it

has been challenging.

“It’s been hard balancing all the events and my volleyball schedule, but it’s getting easier,” she explained.

Voight enjoyed the Quesnel Business Awards as it gave her a chance to meet with people she normally wouldn’t interact with.

Voight believes the most important job as Miss Quesnel is setting a good example and her sponsor is Cutting Edge.

“Jadyn, who is Miss Quesnel, encouraged me to join,” Jarvis said.

Jarvis’ favorite moment has been the volunteer citizen of the year awards as she was excited to see the program’s executive, Liz Miller receive

the award.

For the talent portion of the speech and talent evening, Jarvis is doing gymnastics.

“I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was five years old,” she explained.

Jarvis thinks a key role of Miss Quesnel is representing the community.

“I think it’s important to act appropriately and set a good example,” she said. Jarvis’ sponsor is Bob Graham Ltd.

Shelby Westbury joined for the experience

DANIKA HÉBERT Observer Reporter Shelby Westbury was looking for a new experience when she decided to join the Miss Quesnel Self Development program.

“I joined the program for the experience and it seemed to be something good to be involved with,” she said.

During her spare time, Westbury enjoys playing sports. “I like to play curling and playing softball,” she explained.

“I’m going to the winter games next year for curling.”

Westbury has procured many new skills and has enjoyed bonding with the other girls in the program. Westbury’s sponsor is Kal Tire.

The Special Committee on Timber Supply completed its visit to the Cariboo-Chilcotin last week, holding public meetings in 100 Mile House, Williams Lake and Quesnel, and taking a day-long tour of the Quesnel Timber Supply Area (TSA) for Committee members.

I want to personally thank all those who took the time to attend the Committee hearings, particularly those who made formal presentations. The turnout was good (standing room only in Williams Lake), with many professional foresters sitting in on the proceedings. The Association of BC Forest Professionals did a very good job promoting the hearings and getting their members to attend.

By all accounts the Quesnel Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) District staff put together a comprehensive and very meaningful tour of the Quesnel TSA, which helped the MLAs on the Committee get a real sense of the extent of the salvage logging in this TSA as well as how the forest is greening up post-salvage. In the weeks leading up to the Committee hearings FLNRO staff in both Quesnel and Williams Lake burned the midnight oil preparing for the Committee’s visit, and I appreciate their efforts to make sure the Committee had access to accurate information about the public forest land base in our region.

I also want to thank the MLAs on the Committee, senior staff from FLNRO, and staff from Hansard and the Clerk’s Office who have traveled throughout the Interior over the last two months to visit the communities most affected by the mountain pine beetle. The aggressive agenda of the Committee meant all of these people had to spend weeks on the road away from their families and, in the case of the MLAs, their constituencies.

I will be making a formal written submission to the Committee, and I’ll present the highlights of that submission in my musing next week and post the full submission on my webpage.

Roller Derby coming to BB Days The Gold Pain City Derby Girls have been picking up skaters and picking up speed, endurance and skills all season!

With four bouts behind us – one in May at home where we defeated Fort St. John’s Energetic City Roller Derby – we are eager and excited to be hosting the second annual Gold Rush Rumble, July 20 at the Quesnel Twin Arenas during Billy Barker Days! Flat track roller derby was recently said to be the fastest growing sport in the world and our local Gold Pain Girls’ team has been growing too! We started the season out with eight skaters who passed their minimum skills.

Injury is always a concern and over the course of the last six months we’ve had knee, shoulder and leg injuries that have kept players from playing.

But still we keep growing. At present we have twelve skaters who have passed their minimum skills and more in training! We’ve also been training our own refereeing crew! The team is fired up to complete our first full bouting season at home at the Gold Rush Rumble! It’s a real mark of success for us. There’s a lot of dedication, hard work, organization, sweat and even a few tears that goes into putting a team together and keeping it growing and improving.

It’s a common jest that we all have derby widows and widowers at home as we head out the door for the second or third night of the week for a meeting, fundraiser, dry land work out, bout

planning or practice, but it stems from truth. The women and men participating conduct a fine juggling act of work, home, kids and their activities, with the demands of a new team. So far so good!

I’m incredibly proud of each of them!

A big part of our success is the support the team members offer one another; sharing teen children to care for little ones, helping out when someone is injured, car pooling and basic encouragement through the learning process of such a physical sport. And we’d not have come this far without the support of our wonderful volunteers and the businesses of Quesnel who have really backed us up. We’d be lost without all of them and their efforts!

Our volunteers have done everything from selling tickets, to serving hot dogs, sponsoring so we can host bouts and travel to learning the duties of a non-skating official. We’re always humbled and so grateful! So, we ask you this July 20 to come out and support us again and we promise to return the favour by entertaining you with the fastest growing sport in the world!! Last year we played the Rated PG Roller Girls with an after party dance at the arena. This year, we’ll kick off the night at 7 p.m. to play Kamloops’ Tournament City Derby Dolls’ Rookie team. It’s an anticipated rematch after our bout in Kamloops, June 23 when we lost to them. We need you all out to cheer us on!

doesn’t stop there because it’s a double header and the Rated PG Roller Girls from Prince George take on the Lake City Derby Girls from Williams Lake! After party dance is right there at the arena again!

We have JP Pinel spinning the music for us. Pre-sale tickets for the bout are $10, children 10 years and under are free. (Everyone needs a ticket so pick your

free child tickets up as well.) Or you can get them at the door for $12.

The after party dance tickets are $10 but are only available until the end of the first bout, there will be no ticket sales at the door of the after party.

A

s I head out for a much-anticipated two-week vacation, I’m reminded of how important these time-outs are to most working people (and that includes the unpaid people who also toil at home.)

Whether you slug it out in a factory or strain your brain in a think tank, time away from the everyday grind is critical.

It provides a chance to rest, rejuvenate and recharge those important internal batteries that enable us to get up every day and make the trek into our jobs.

I remember a vacation, many years ago, when I realized about 100 miles into my journey, I’d forgotten my watch. In conversation with my sister (first stop on the trip) she reminded me I was on vacation and time was of little consequence. She told me to relax and spend my time enjoying every minute, not counting them.

At the time I was working as a radio producer and every second was carefully scripted, even trips to the washroom had to be closely timed.

By the end of the vacation I couldn’t care less about wearing a watch.

That changed when I realized I was usually late getting my children to various events and was becoming known as tardy.

Now, with deadlines more closely connected to days rather than minutes, I’ve again abandoned my watch.

There’s plenty of clocks in this world to keep me loosely on track.

Other than an occasional ferry schedule I must keep, this trip is about going where I want and arriving when I get there. Mindful of the worriers in my world, I will stay close enough to my estimated time of arrival so no one calls the police, but if a roadside attraction appeals to me I might just stop for a few moments. How many?

That will be determined by how the spirit moves me.

So, take the time to heals the wounds of a hectic life, prepare for the next year of dedication and job expectations and make memories that will sustain you through winter and get you to your next vacation.

y husband came home last week and asked if I’d bought a lottery ticket.

My initial reaction was to tell him no because I never remember to buy lottery tickets.

“Why do you ask?” I inquired.

“A million dollar ticket was sold here,” he said.

Ah, isn’t that nice, I thought, I hope the winner was a nice, poor person.

About five minutes later I remembered the cashier at the gas station asking me if I wanted to buy a lottery ticket.

For the life of me I couldn’t remember when that had happened, or if I’d even said yes. I imagined I must have because I rarely say no and I reached for my purse.

Inside my wallet was the lottery ticket I had in fact bought.

I bet I’m the winner, I said to myself, immediately imagining what I would do with the money.

The idea that a large unexpected chunk of money could alleviate some financial burdens and make life so much easier in the blink of an eye was a fun fantasy to participate in.

By the time I reached the store to check the ticket, I had pictured myself hiring a housekeeper, a dog walker, a bookkeeper, a nanny and a couple of assistants to help me with my business.

I’d also helped some friends and family, paid off my mortgage and debts, and was sitting on the beach in Hawaii drinking a Mai Tai, watching my kids frolic joyfully in the surf.

“Not a winner,” the clerk

“How could I get nothing on both of them? That’s so unfair!”

“That’s gambling for you,” I explained.

“Winning is possible, but it’s much more likely you won’t win than you will.”

“Can we stop at the corner store for some more?” she pleaded.

“Please Mom? Please?”

I looked back at her and could see the potentially dangerous gambler’s glint in her young eyes and remembered hearing once that one of the healthiest ways to gamble was with a spade and a package of garden seeds.

“Why don’t we pick up some daisy seeds and plant those instead?” I suggested.

“Okay!” she said with excitement.

“But I’ll water them, okay? You’ll forget.”

I’d be willing to wager she’s right about that.

said gruffly, slapping the ticket on the counter and crushing my dreams.

I wanted to ask him if he was sure and to try it again, but I knew the outcome would be the same and he wouldn’t be pleased with my request.

“Can we buy one of those?” my nine-year-old daughter Daisy asked, pointing at the scratch tickets under the glass.

“Sure,” I said dejectedly, buying two and handing them over to her to play.

Using a penny to uncover the X’s and O’s, she won nothing on one and $2 on the other.

With her $2 winnings I bought another two for her and the same thing happened again.

“We have to go,” I explained to her after buying two more tickets.

“Bring these with you and you can check them in the car.”

Excitedly she scratched them as we were pulling out of the parking lot.

“Nothing?” she exclaimed as she finished scratching

I agree. I think you may be indeed be “setting a record” for the amount of attention given! Your “community” newspaper has printed this item filled with accusations, suggestions of collusion and loaded statements like the references to a “parade” of city management exitingbeing “paid to leave”, a “wasteful whitewash” from the auditor etc.

And despite your policy that submissions should be 250 words or less, by my estimate, Ms. Morton’s letter was closer to 1,000 words – half a page!

Printing an editor’s note at the end of this lengthy submission indicating that Mayor Sjostrom declined comment is almost laughable. What should she comment on?

A careful reading of Ms. Morton’s submission does not offer any compelling “evidence” of the serious accusations that she continues to put forward.

This is what I read from the article itself: • Ms. Morton states that she requested “a clear understanding” from the advanced rulings department of Revenue Canada on the tax-free expense allowance. (This might suggest that this is a regulation that is very open to multiple

lawful interpretations.)

They returned her fee, she states, because they “do not want to provide the information.” What should the Mayor comment on here?

• The fact that Gail Shea, Federal Revenue Minister referred Ms. Morton’s letter to Finance Minister Flaherty is not confirmation that the exemption has been misinterpreted or misused.

If Ministers Shea or Flaherty provided Ms. Morton with the “clear understanding” that she requested, she has omitted it in her submission – I do not see it stated there. Ms. Morton states that MP Dick Harris is “clearly at odds with his government’s own finance

minister!” but we don’t even know what Mr. Flaherty has said. To be fair, perhaps this is why Mayor Sjostrom declined comment.

Ms. Morton seems to suggest that some phone numbers on the phone bills provided should not have been blacked out, because anyone who knows her understands that she is “very concerned about protecting the privacy of individuals.”

While I am sure this is true, it must be said, sadly, that this is not a sufficient guarantee in the realm of governmental policy and regulations.

A community newspaper can go a long way to promote respect, integrity and civility in the political discourse. I think you should try it.

Monster run set to hit the road

Fraser River GM standing tall as proud community supporter

On July 13, Stew Castle of Quesnel and half a dozen other riders will be heading out on a 30-hour monster run to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Stew started this ride in honour of his high school friend Lenny. Stew has watched muscular dystrophy change Lenny’s life as well Lenny’s sister who also had muscular dystrophy and has since passed from her condition. Last year, Stew and the group of riders raised more than $8,000 in their first year and are hoping to raise $5,000 or more in 2012.

The riders have 30 hours to complete the Run and if they are back in Quesnel in 24 hours they can apply for Iron Butt status, an endurance award from the Iron Butt Association based in the United States.

They leave Quesnel at 4:30 a.m., July 13 head through Prince George, McBride, Jasper, Lake Louise, Edgewater, Golden, Sicamouse, Armstrong, Kelowna, Merritt, Savona, Cache Creek, Williams Lake and back to Quesnel.

In honour of his work to raise money for MDC, Stew will be presented an award at a wrap-up BBQ at his house on the Saturday after the Monster Run. A Quesnel fire fighter, who supports Muscular Dystrophy Canada, will present Stew with the Fred Shaddick Community Spirit Award.

This award is presented to a group or other community service organization that has had a relationship with MDC in planning and organizing a third party event during the past year.

Canada Day was not only busy on the ground but, thanks to pilot and aerobatic expert Ron Andrew of Blender Airshows the skies were also worth watching.

Andrew, who is performing at this year’s Skyfest, Aug. 4 – 5, offered aerobatic rides, which were auctioned off at Skyfest’s fundraising pub nights and two of those lucky bidders received their once-in-alifetime rides on Saturday, June 30.

On Sunday, Andrew flew over Canada Day celebrations in LeBourdais Park. With smoke-on he spiraled from 3,200 feet down to 1,500 feet above the crowd, then flew a figure 8. Many oohs and aahs were heard from the crowd at the park. While in Quesnel, Andrew, right, was graciously supplied with a vehicle from Fraser River GM, courtesy of Shane Thon, left. Also, a room was provided at the Sandman Inn and meals at Dennys and Sharks Club. Volunteers are still welcome and one lucky volunteer will win an aerobatic ride.

‘Westside mural just the beginning,’ says Ron Goffic ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

T

he west wall, facing the parking lot of Bliss the Ultimate Grill, now sports a decorative mural, complete with Pan Phillips sitting on a bench with a cup of coffee in his hand.

“My dad loved his morning coffee and telling stories,” Pan’s daughter Diana Phillips said.

“I think its very nice to have my father on the mural.”

Building owner and Pioneer Trading’s Ron Goffic and Bliss owner Jas Sabberwal had talked about a mural for a long time but never got around to it, Sabberwal said.

“When he came up with the idea, I was fully

supportive,” he added.

In consultation with mural artist Leigh Cassidy, Goffic liked the idea of including Pan Phillips in the mural.

The mural was originally to beautify the building, add to the appeal of Quesnel’s west side and hopefully inspire other westside residents to consider similar improvements.

Adding Pan Phillips was a tip of the hat to Quesnel’s historic past.

“When I was a kid, 60 years ago, Pan Phillips was an icon,” Goffic said.

“Bigger than life, I have memories of when he would come to town, it was like a big party.”

He reminisced about how Phillips also took the time to talk with the kids.

“We’d go to the bridge and watch them move cattle across. He was a hero to a lot of us kids and that’s why I wanted him on the mural.”

Goffic said he’s lived on the west side for 65 years and the area doesn’t deserve the bad rap it has.

“I wanted to show pride in the west side. I’ve been in business with Pioneer Trading for 20 years on the west side and there’s a lot of good people here,” he said.

“I love doing business on the west side and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

Cassidy suggested, in addition to Pan, the windows and other aspects of the mural, adding lots of flowers as a nod to the profusion of hanging baskets and flower pots at the front of

Bliss.

“The flowers were Leigh’s idea and it really brightens up the mural,” Goffic said.

Sabberwal said he also enjoys doing business on the west side and was very happy with how the mural turned out.

“It’s definitely a challenge to bring people to the west side but we’re having good success,” he said.

He also said as a business he believes it’s important to improve the area around the business.

“I truly believe that’s also contagious – you start doing something good and your neighbours see that and they start to improve,” he said.

“But we can only do our part.

“This mural is not only beautiful, but it celebrates

a Cariboo legend and that’s always a good thing.”

Sabberwal said they plan to add a brass plaque so people will know who the fellow in the mural is and what he’s known for.

Diana Phillips added it’s very fitting that her father is on the wall, as Quesnel was where he would come to for whatever he needed in town.

Not only did he drive cattle here but, once he had his pilot’s licence, Quesnel was often his flying destination as well.

As for the murals, she thinks they’re a great addition to any community.

“Murals on buildings are a great way to begin beautification of any area,” she said.

As for Cassidy, she appreciates the commitment from the merchants to improve their environment.

“Everyone benefits from a mural,” she said.

“By doing something positive, like the mural, instead of listening to the negative stories, you create a positive reality.

Quesnel is a historic town and many people don’t know enough of that history.

“It was a fun project, especially when students stop and ask about the history. They realize their town is a part of that.”

Goffic put the challenge out to other businesses.

“There’s a number of blank walls and I’d like to see them full,” he said.

“This is just the beginning.”

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A double-header for the peewee Quesnel Inwood Trucking All Stars against their Prince George counterparts the Capabilities Knights All Stars, ended in a double victory for the home team.

With the playdowns in Prince George at the end of the month, the two teams were playing the exhibition games to sharpen their skills.

A collection of Prince George and Quesnel parents set up their camp chairs and beach umbrellas under the hot, summer sun and settled in to chat,

drink cold beverages and cheer on the kids at the near-all-day event.

The first game of the double header started just as the day was heating up.

Facing a team the Quesnel All Stars had a 3-0 record against, the team was confident.

That confidence showed through in the game as the team played it's way to a 17-11 finish.

The teams then took a break for lunch and a rest before heading into their

second game By the second game, the pitcher's mound had become dust, despite the earlier hose down of the field by the fire department.

The short lunch seemed to knock the Quesnel kids off their stride as they

quickly went down 5-0 by the end of the first inning. Five runs is as many as a a team can get in peewee baseball, except for the final 'open' inning, which does not impose a limit.

"When we started off, Cole Gronskei (the teams

pitcher) was missing the plate," one of the team's coaches, Tracy Mero, said.

The team didn't let the mounting score scare them though. After a difficult start they dug back in to bring the game back to even.

"We mounted a pretty good comeback: Cole Gronskei with a triple and Brody Dale with two triples and a double," Mero said.

Going into the final inning the game was tied

with each team sitting at 10 runs. Then Quesnel opened the taps.

"We took to the bats and got nine runs in the open inning," Mero said.

Despite the hiccup in the second game, Mero has confidence both in his pitchers and the batters to get the team past Prince George to provincials.

"With the pitching and the kids hitting the way they are, we should have no problem going on to provincials," Mero said.

Should the team meet Mero's expectations in Prince George next week, they will go on to play in Rutland on the August long weekend for provincials.

Gold stocks weekend Local stock car drivers travelled to Williams Lake for the Stampede week-end Invitational Stock Car races and ended the weekend with good results.

Drivers Dustin Brown, Hannah Braman and Terry Braman represented Quesnel with three of the 11 car Mini-Stock field and Chris Closson represented the Gold Pan City in the Thunder Stock Class.

Under overcast skies, the green flag dropped for the Mini-stock heat race with Dustin Brown’s #22 Mazda on the outside pole, Hannah Braman’s #19 Mazda behind him and Terry Braman’s #52 Pontiac on the inside of row three. Terry Braman took the lead on lap two but relinquished to George Geisbrecht of Williams Lake on lap seven. The Co-op sponsored #52 eventually finished third, Dustin Brown’s Prism Towing sponsored #22 finished fifth and Hannah Braman’s Johnson Equipment sponsored #19 took the checker in ninth, after a few spins.

The Mini-Stock main lined up with Dustin Brown on the pole, Terry Braman on the outside pole and Hannah Braman at the rear of the field due to her rookie status.

With a pass on the outside, Braman’s Pontiac Grand Am gained the lead and maintained it in spite of numerous restarts caused by cautions. Ongoing battles ensued between the #52 car and the #66 of Trophy Dash winner Sean Kelly, until the #25 of George Geisbrecht started challenging Kelly for second place. The #25 car gained the second position on lap nineteen and narrowed the gap on the first place car as lapped cars became a factor. Geisbrecht’s challenge intensified on the last lap as, once again, lapped traffic

came into play. Geisbrecht went to the outside of a group of lapped cars in his #25 Honda for a last lap pass attempt, while Braman kept his Grand Am to the inside.

The checkered flag dropped with Terry’s winning #52 pushing a lapped car across the finish line and George’s #25, both in a four wide pack, a mere 0.023 seconds behind. Dustin Brown completed the race in seventh position and Hannah Braman experienced an eighth place finish during her second race weekend in her rookie season.

In the Thunder-Stock trophy dash, Quesnel’s Chris Closson made a quick pass from the outside pole to the lead on the first lap. However, a hard charging Jesse Fisher shuffled Closson back to second place mid-way, where he finished.

The Thunder-Stock heat race went green with Chris Closson’s Design Flooring sponsored #96 on the inside of row three. He was able to move up to fourth, a position he maintained until lap nine when he took over third, which he held to the finish.

The main event of the ThunderStock class began with a bang or, more accurately, a few bangs.

A series of spins and crashes on lap three sent the #79 of Becky Jackson and the #53 of Willy Frank to the pits for the evening.

Chris Closson initially slipped back to fifth but was up to second by lap three. Chris lost his position to an aggressive Tim Westwick who worked his #56 up to the lead. The final twenty laps were an intense battle between Williams Lake’s Tim Westwick and Quesnel’s Chris Closson with Chris holding onto first place for the final five laps.

WILLIAMS LAKE SALE  THURSDAY JUNE 21ST Williams Lake put it all together Thursday as they combined their cattle sale of 325 head with a huge horse sale. Every buyer chair was filled for the cattle sale as butcher bulls and cows opened this aggressive sale. Corrina Thompson saw her 1745 lb butcher bulls top 94.25. The Pablo Mountain Cattle Co.’s 1825 lb butcher bulls hit 95.00, their 1695 lb butcher cows hit 78.25. The Douglas Lake Cattle Co Alkali Lake Division saw their liner load of big good heavy high yielding butcher cows 1295 lbs trade to 79.00, the younger 1000 lb feeder cows hit 92.50. Pam Blain and Bruce Donaldson saw their 1490 lb butcher cows top out at 79.25. Bonnie Smith topped our cow trade with 1490 lb butcher cows reaching 79.75. A light volume of feeder, grasser cattle sold strong today. Walt and Carol Foster’s 665 lb steers rolled to 157.50, the 510 lb s/c hit 175.00. Harris Ranch’s 630 lb steers sold to 162.00, their 728 lb Tan steers traded to 157.00, and the 713 lb heifers sold to 151.00. Wayne Chard’s 730 lb Blk steers sold to 153.50. Vic & Sue Meyer saw their 635 lb steers trade to 175.00, their 750 lb steers walked to 158.00, and their 615 lb heifers traded to 145.00. Ron & Karen Van Schagen saw their 642 lb Hereford steers top 170.00.

A huge horse sale with well over 120 horses. The place was full and the action was incredible start to finish.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Quesnel lawn bowlers are still in possession of the coveted Marg Foulston Memorial Trophy after Angie Kollner bowled for 28 points on a sunny Wednesday last week.

A total of 24 bowlers made it out to the lawn bowling pitch in West Fraser Timber Park for the first of two matches between the Prince George lawn bowlers and the local lawn bowler's club to fight it out on the pitch and chat over potluck.

The full-day event, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing through to 3 p.m., included a potluck the

locals brought, along with pleasant conversation.

"It's mostly a social thing for us," Claude Mercereau, president of the club, said.

A cross between a picnic social and a competitive tournament, the sunny day offered a little something for everyone.

And, just to stir things up and muddy the waters between friendship and competitiveness, the two clubs mixed and matched players using a draw to create teams. That meant some Quesnel bowlers were paired with their Prince George rivals.

With Kollner's win, this is the second year the trophy has lived

in Quesnel, though a second match on the Prince George bowler's home pitch puts the trophy at risk of finding a new home farther north.

That next tournament takes place, Aug. 8.
