The B.C. Government and Service Employees Union launched strike action with a one-day walkout at liquor distribution warehouses in Vancouver, Victoria and Kamloops. BCGEU chief negotiator David Vipond said the strike action is to protest the B.C. Liberal government’s plan to sell off the three warehouses, as well as back the union’s demands. The union rejected

an offer of a two per cent wage increase this year and another 1.5 per cent next year, and is seeking about six per cent over two years after three years without a raise. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon responded to the union’s strike vote by suggesting the wage offer could be withdrawn. The government describes its current negotiating mandate as “co-operative gains,” where pay increases must be financed by cost reductions in work arrangement. Vipond said the BCGEU’s

PSO students receive year end achievement awards The 2012 school year came to a close for the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students with their awards presentation June 26. Students, family and friends packed the gym to congratulate the students for working diligently in their studies. The afternoon’s ceremony began with the singing of O Canada performed by Donna ForwardHouriet and accompanied by Karl Beitlberger. It was followed by a First Nations welcome by Elsie Archie. The audience was treated to a couple musical interludes, including Hallelujah performed by Grade 12 student Niki Watson backed up on guitar by Steven Scott. Janson Ruscheinsky played his guitar and sang We’re Here for a Good Time. Once all the awards were given out, the audience viewed the year-end video. Hydro rate hike trimmed for 2013 By Tom Fletcher Black Press

Despite controversial private power contracts and approval of two pricy dam refits, BC Hydroâ€™s rate increase will be only 1.44 per cent next year, said Energy Minister Rich Coleman. He added the B.C. Liberal government is instructing the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) to limit rate increases to a total of 17 per cent for the three-year period ending April 1, 2014. With rates up 7.1 per cent since April of this year and last yearâ€™s eight per cent hike, the 1.44 per cent

The smallest rate increase in years will take effect April 1, 2013, just weeks before the next provincial election. Coleman said the directed increase was not done for election purposes, but because it was the simplest way to proceed. A

Red Rock Avengers take game 3 of men's softball playoff finals Ken Alexander Free Press

Game 3 of the 100 Mile Men’s Fastball League’s best-of-three playoff championship attracted a huge crowd at Lumberman’s Park on July 10 and it was a barnburner. The Red Rock Avengers and the Shuswap Defenders had battled hard in the first two games of the playoffs, with the Avengers winning 6-4 in game 1 and the Defenders running away with a 15-7 victory in game 2. You could feel electricity in the air as both sides had a large fan base and people cheered throughout the rubber match, as they urged their teams on from the first pitch to the last out of the game. Red Rock jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Brad Mills crossed the plate. Shuswap shortstop Neal Christopher tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the second. However, the Avengers answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to go up 5-1 after two innings. The Defenders got back into the game in the top of the third when Mark Boyce hit a monster three-run homer to close the gap to 5-4. The Red Rock bats

They faced a tough opponent in the Shuswap Defenders in the best-of-three playoff series. were hot all night, and they scored another run in their half of the third, and then added one more in the fourth on a solo blast from Brody Borg. Leading 7-4, the Avengers blew the game open when Ryan Odette stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth and ripped a dou-

ble down the first base line to clear the bases. Shuswap managed to score one more run, but Red Rock took the championship game 12-5. Red Rock chucker Pat Findlay struck out four batters during the game, while Shuswap pitcher Antoine Sargeant sat down six Red Rock batters.

Local RCMP looking for owners of recovered goods and cash POLICE REPORT Prohibited driver On July 5, 100 Mile Traffic Services responded to a request for assistance from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement Branch members, as they had a vehicle pulled over for inspection and the driver was unable to produce a licence. The investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle was prohibited from operating a motor vehicle across Canada. Charges of driving while prohibited are being

recommended to Crown against a 35-year-old Lone Butte man. Cash found On June 22, a substantial amount of cash was found at the South Cariboo Farmers’ Market in 100 Mile House and turned in to the 100 Mile House RCMP in the hopes the owner would come forward. Specific items were located with the cash that will have to be identified for receipt by the owner. Anyone with information in regards to the incident is requested to contact RCMP Const.

There will be adult drop-in soccer for both men and women in 100 Mile House this summer. Games will be played at the 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association soccer park on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. or

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260 of 100 Mile House gives out donations to nonprofit organizations in the spring and fall. “We usually have an ad in the paper calling for submissions early spring and late summer,” says Legion president Scott Rathy. “It used to be that we would just donate to various groups, but we decided there may have been groups that were missed and really needed the help.” The recipients of the spring funding, a total of $5,250, include the 100 Mile Curling Club, Military Family Resource Centre, Lord Strathcona’s Taste of Home Project, South Cariboo Community Planning Committee, Girl Guides, South Cariboo Health

Foundation, 100 Mile & District General Hospital Auxiliary, Lone Butte Historical Association, and 100 Mile House Junior Secondary. Every year, the local Legion donates money from general revenue to help with the Seniors Christmas Dinner put on by the Rotary Club of 100 Mile House, as well as all veteran’s din-

ners at the Legion, says Rathy. “We’ve donated money to the seniors’ dinners for as long as I can remember. After all, they are our seniors.” Any non-profit organization can apply for the grants, he says, adding there may be some restrictions. For m o re information, call 250395-2511.

Dan Lyttonâ€™s Celebration of Life moving By Diana Forster To say it was standing-room-only would be an understatement. On July 1, they all came to Interlakes Hall to bid farewell to Danny Lytton, the â€œbest-loved cowboy in the Cariboo,â€? who passed away June 17. Guests parked on the grounds, all the way up Highway 24, in Granbergsâ€™ field opposite, and throughout the rodeo grounds on East Sheridan Lake Road. Those who parked

far away were offered shuttle service by drivers Gus Collins, Paul Desaulniers, Jim Malm and Barry Toporowski. Seating and a remote television screen were provided outside the hall for those who could not fit inside. And the sun shone. Master of ceremonies Gary Cleveland welcomed guests to Danâ€™s Celebration of Life, and Pete Bonter delivered the opening

Millie Powell sent a touching letter of sorrow and thanks. Dan Fremlin played the mandolin and sang, “Leaving Cheyenne,” while other cowboy songs were played by sound/screen technician Mark McMiIlan. The family had put together a wonderful slide show of Dan’s life right up to the photo of grandpa with his 11 grandchildren. This was accompanied by various other cowboy songs, one of which,

“The Hills of B.C.,” was new to this writer and particularly apropos. Guests, who did not already know, learned Danny had been inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2005, a trib-

ute that had meant a great deal to him. In closing, Bonter recited the Cowboys’ Prayer and gave thanks, on behalf of all the guests, for their loving friendships with the one-of-akind Dan Lytton.
