Q&A WITH MAYOR GREGOR ROBERTSON How will you celebrate Pride?
What does Pride Week mean to the city of Vancouver? It’s a huge, joyful celebration of diversity and culture in Vancouver. It brings five or six hundred thousand people together in a legendary, peaceful celebration. Pride Week is a significant economic driver — it’s approximately $30 million in economic impact, attracting tourists and boosting our downtown business community. I think the community and cultural piece is really at the core and the economic benefit is a bonus. What does Pride mean to you? To me, Pride is the peak of summer in Vancouver. It’s such an intense expression of our city’s vibrancy and desire to embrace our diversity and to fight to keep making gains for people to be themselves.
WEVancouver.com
Well, we’ll have a big, splashy launch of Pride Week at City Hall. The city’s had a big presence at Pride since 2009 with a dedicated float. Our city staff, the Vancouver Police Department and the fire department are all in the parade together, showing the solidarity we have as a city. So we’ll have a strong presence of many people who serve Vancouver citizens. I’ve personally taken in a variety of events, during Pride Week, over the years and I love the Pride Parade. Do you have a message for those attending the celebration? Enjoy the fabulous celebration and recommit to maintaining the fight to end homophobia, hate crime and bullying in our city. I think we’ve come a long way as a city and we’ve still got work to do so this is a time to celebrate our progress and rededicate to the work ahead.

WHAT DOES PRIDE WEEK MEAN TO YOU?
CURTIS CLEVELAND
JANINE MERKL
It’s a chance for this culture, this community, to get out and show the rest of the community what they’re about — really, that’s the essence of it. It’s just like Greek Week or Italian Week; it’s people showing who they are.
It’s about having pride in who you are, no matter who you are and what you choose to live by. It’s about not having any barriers.
GAVIN KIRKPATRICK
JANE MCLEOD
To me, Pride and the Pride Parade are about the celebration of one’s sexuality and the recognition of the acceptance of that by society.
The Pride Parade is the bringing together of everybody and to recognize what the gay community has gone through and what it’s become.

CARYL DOLINKO — PRIDE LINKS US TOGETHER Every year, all over the world, the LGBTI community has what some might call a “family reunion”. We all meet up for Pride, and some time during the week leading up to the big day, we get our hair cut, go to the gym for our last set of ab crunches and make sure our outfits are fabulous so that we look our best for the “cousins” we see once a year. For that one week, we are visible and proud and we welcome everybody to celebrate our community at our reunion. No matter where you might be for Pride, you know that once you step into it, you’re a part of it. And if you’re not, you want to be. There is joy, love, laughter, acceptance and a sense of elation and wild abandon. For that one day, we don’t have to hide, we don’t have to be afraid and we don’t have to feel shame, for there are thousands and thousands of us standing together, united as one. It’s on this day that Pride links us together. There’s a familiar and welcoming feeling when you arrive at Pride. It’s not just the leather men, gyrating twinks, colourful drag queens, sporty softball jocks, or topless women. There’s something in our spirits that’s visible to those who look past the party. It doesn’t show itself by waving a rainbow flag nor does it need to march. It’s the deep sense that we’re a family. That’s what Pride does. Pride links us together as a community and says “we’re here” wherever we are. We may see a part of ourselves, even for a moment, in those who march in the parade, or in those who dance and celebrate. As they carry the rainbow flag through the crowds and 12
down the streets or wave them at picnics, or fly them as kites, we claim this day as ours and we can proudly say, “I’m here! This is my community, my family, and I’m one of them.” For that one day at Pride, we proclaim that we’re united, in our understanding of one another and in our struggle for acceptance. Next time you stand at the roadside and watch the dykes on bikes kick off the parade, the floats, the marchers, the boas, the boys and all the pageantry, be proud to know that this is our family. And, like all families, we may have our fights, our struggles, even our drunk aunts and our inappropriate uncles, but more than anything, we have each other. On this one day, we can put away our strife and join together because this is our day, our Pride, and through this, we are forever linked. Caryl Dolinko is the co-president of InterPride Inc.

AMBER DAWN – VANCOUVER QUEER FILM FEST
What is one characteristic that makes queer and gay films unique? “I think if I were to name one thing that they all have in common, it would be that we don’t take our stories for granted,” says Amber Dawn, director of programming for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. “Historically and in the present day, our stories, locally and in Canada, are under-told. And globally, not only are they under-told, but there might be a risk in telling them.”
side would be our philanthropic side, the part of us that’s still looking at human rights issues — anything from marriage equality to queer refugees seeking safe passage to queer-friendly countries like Canada.” The festival will showcase 75 films from 16 different countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Ecuador.
Thankfully, these stories will get to be told at the 24th annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival, August 16 to 26. Under the theme of “lovers and fighters,” it will showcase films that look at the two sides of the GLBT community. “There are queer relationships, sexuality and families — so that’s the lovers side of things. And then the fighters
“There are definitely more films coming out each year and more money’s being put into them,” she says. “There are countries that have a tradition of releasing queer films, such as Germany, but then you start to see films coming out of countries that don’t have that tradition — such as Ecuador and Taiwan.” As well, “We continue to be a place where Vancouver artists can show their films to an audience for the very first time – that’s something we’re deeply honoured to do.” QueerFilmFestival.ca

BUSINESS PROFILE: BANANA TANS
What is your business and how long have you had it? Banana Tans was the concept developed by my husband Paul Allen and, as all projects in life, we built it from the ground up with our combined experiences of over 20 years in the indoor tanning business. Over the last five years we’ve seen our business grow into a true neighbourhood success story in Mount Pleasant. We have been able to expand the Banana Tans brand into the Davie Village. What will you be doing during Pride? As this will be the first in many years where I am not either volunteering for a community project, representing a GLBT organization or marching for one of the many associations I support, I think this year I will celebrate Pride with my husband, my friends and partake in the festivities that our community continues so very hard to make as world-class events. What is your favourite thing to do during Pride Week? For sure, the Cruisey-T, Picnic in the Park, Gayday at Playland, the TWMB & Parade are all on this year’s must-do list. What does Pride mean to you? Every time we step out our front door we change the way the world looks at the GLBT community through our 24
John Boychuk, co-owner day-to-day actions. When we march as friends and allies, we show that we are part of a large community with just as much screwed up and colourful diversity as their own family. When I see a corporate float with people who are wanting to be out, loud and proud for the day, it makes me smile as they become acceptable role models, if only for a moment, to the straight youth and their friends and families how much fun and how acceptable it is to be part of this incredible all welcoming lifestyle – even if it’s just for that moment. Although the hatred will never go away, the abandonment and alienation all goes away and we’re all just one of the many colors in the rainbow showing and educating the world that we’re out to celebrate our individuality.

BUSINESS PROFILE: CAYA - TELUS
Kenn Hamlin, director of special projects for Caya - TELUS What is your business and how long have you had it? Caya is a sophisticated brand of award-winning boutiques powered by TELUS. We offer wireless, Optik TV, audio, cameras, imaging and a curated selection of stylish accessories. The stores are a gathering place as well as a retail space, hosting customer and community events. We launched in late 2010 and now have four stores: South Granville, Gastown, downtown and West End. What will you be doing during Pride Week? Celebrating of course! Attending WEVancouver.com
events and revelling in the Pride Parade with our enthusiastic Caya/ TELUS team. It will be a festive week. What is your favourite thing to do during Pride Week? Socialize. Pride is a great opportunity to catch up with friends — old and new in a variety of settings. What does Pride mean to you? For me, Pride is a celebration of diversity and a reminder of just how fortunate we are to call Canada home. Many people in the world still struggle with cultures that are not so open, accepting and proud.

BUSINESS PROFILE: TOPDRAWERS APPAREL
What is your business and how long have you had it? Topdrawers has been bringing men’s underwear, swimwear and activewear from around the world to Vancouver for 20 years. We thought we were trail-blazers back then, opening a “gay” business on Denman Street, but I can honestly say we have not experienced a single homophobic incident in all that time. Vancouver’s a pretty amazing place. We’re celebrating our anniversary with a party and sale in mid-September. What will you be doing during Pride Week? I’ll be working in the store mainly — Pride is a crazy time for us! We’re doing a parade float this year in conjunction with the Naked Underwear brand and Denman Mall’s popular “Fans of Pride” giveaway. We’re looking for underwear models for the parade, so anyone interested — see me! What is your favourite thing to do during Pride Week? The parade is great, so is the event at Sunset, and the cruises. Pride happens to my partner’s and my anniversary so we try to do something special just the two of us, too. We’re both in the service industry so once 26
David King, owner, Topdrawers Pride’s over we usually decompress for a few days out of town! What does Pride mean to you? It’s changed. It’s not a fight for basic rights and AIDS-funding anymore, which has been the focus from the beginning, though there’s still lots to do including watching that we don’t lose anything that’s been hard won. Today, I think Pride is about celebrating our wide diversity and remembering that together we are much more powerful than we are apart.

BUSINESS PROFILE: LITTLE SISTER’S BOOKSTORE
Jim Deva, co-owner, Little Sister’s Bookstore What is your business and how long have you had it? I co-own Little Sister’s Bookstore, (a GBLT bookstore), and we have been open since 1983. What will you be doing Pride Week? I’ll be working hard as it is one of the busiest times of the year.
Permanent hair removal... GUARANTEED for life! www.HairFreeForLife.com WEVancouver.com
What is your favourite thing to do during Pride Week? It’s marching in the parade and to feel part of such a great celebration. What does Pride mean to you? It’s a special time of the year when being gay is part of the majority, rather than the minority.
