Canoe journey empowers coastal youth

O

n June 1, Kirsty Graham along with five other Quest University students, a writer, and two videographers left Vancouver in a veggie oil powered bus bound for Hartley Bay, south of Prince Rupert.

The students from the Squamish-based university had spent two years fundraising for the moment. The Great Bear Rainforest Youth Paddle began as a vision to unite university students and high school students to collaborate and learn about what the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline and supertankers would mean for the Git’gat people and the coastal ecosystem.

“We envisioned mutual youth empowerment, but

I hadn’t imagined how profoundly this experience would impact me,” Graham said. “When we arrived in Hartley Bay, we were greeted warmly and Cam Hill welcomed us into his home to tell us a bit about the community over a dinner of fresh salmon. The next day we met all of the other students we’d be paddling with and our first team-building exercise was to carry the 20-person canoe down to the water.

We spent the next three days practicing paddling and exploring the area.”

On the day of the paddle, the group loaded up the support boats and were on the water by 7:30 a.m.

take shifts between paddling and resting on the support boat.

It took eight hours to paddle from Hartley Bay to the spring harvesting camp, Kiel.

“Going through a feat of physical endurance and sharing a wilderness journey brings people together,” Graham said. “The meeting that we had over dinner that night was touching. We discussed how unbelievable it is that oil companies expect supertankers to navigate these channels, and how important and beautiful our trip was.

One student said, ‘I was just thinking, there’s no place like home.’

“It was hard to leave Kiel because so much happened in those few days to make me

feel like I belonged,” Graham said. “We had visited a whale research lab, paddled to Sea Lion Rock, made meals together, played games, and had bonfires every night.

On our paddle back to Hartley Bay, we met a group of white-sided dolphins and a pod of orcas, which swam by the canoe. The whole experience was transformational. I’m already searching for ways and reasons to go back. Hopefully next time it’s to celebrate the refusal of the Northern Gateway pipeline.”

of a team of carvers, led by ‘Namgis master carver Rande Cook, working on a 25foot totem pole that will be shipped later this month to the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, The Netherlands.

“It’s kind of neat I get to do this pole and go over there,” said Bruce, who will join the rest of

the carving team in The Netherlands to perform two weeks of finishing work on the pole. “It’s helping us to be better known around the world.”

The pole will be part of the museum’s exhibit on the First Nations of the Northwest Coast. The exhibit will open in early October, and a delegation of ‘Namgis

dancers and singers will be part of the opening ceremonies, said Sarah Holland, executive director of the U’mista Cultural Centre, which facilitated the project.

“It will be the only pole in the Netherlands,” said Holland, who has been working the past couple of weeks in Alert Bay with Dutch

The centre, which includes a museum that housed the renown Potlatch Collection of masks, carvings and other art, is tasked with preservation of the cultural heritage of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples. This will be the second year in a row that U’mista has been involved in a major international partnership. Last spring, the centre hosted centuries-old artifacts from the Saxon Sovereign Court which lent some of its Potlatch Collection items for display in Dresden, Germany.

Speck, 23, and Bruce, 32, recognize the unique chance they’ve been provided while working with master carvers Cook, Calvin Hunt and Jonathon Livingston.

“It’s unreal, the odd chance that I lucked out and got this opportunity,” said Speck, who has been carving for little more than five years.

“The best part of it is carrying on our tradition of carving.”

Bruce described the new totem pole as a craft pole, the elements of which represent the ‘Namgis carvers’ families.

that tribes and bands throughout the coastal Northwest, from Washington through B.C. and into Alaska, were invited to submit proposal and sketches for poles for the Dutch exhibit. Hunt’s design prevailed, they believe, because it is a full, 360-degree carving of the pole.

“In some places, they cut the log (lengthwise) and it’s just a half-pole,” said Bruce, who has been carving for nearly 15 years. “Other ones use the whole log, but they only carve one side.

This will be carved all the way around; I think that’s why this design was picked.”

Kwakwaka’wakw carving is also distinctive for its deep cuts, sparing use of paint and for its use of protruding elements, including beaks, wings and fins.

Cook’s design will feature a killer whale at its base, a human figure in the middle and a thunderbird on top, with wings added to the bird and a large fin to the whale. Cook described the thunderbird as an origin story related to his family, while the whale represents the family of his grandmother, from Village Island.

“I wanted to

connect the elements of water, air and earth, which unify all of us,” Cook told de Boer in a video shot after the arrival of the raw log in Fort Rupert, where carving began.

Large pole-carving is nothing new for Bruce, who has previously worked with his uncle, master carver Don Swanvik, Beau Dick, Marcus Alfred and others.

“It takes a lot of years to learn carving, so you’ve got to really want to do it,” said Bruce. “I’ve gotten to be around a lot of masters, and it’s amazing how much you learn just being with them.”

Speck and Bruce are both looking forward to travel to The Netherlands this summer, the first trip for either away from North America.

On the other hand, they’re already getting a bit of practice being international celebrities.

“There was a group from England that came and videotaped us working on the pole,” Bruce said with a laugh. “And another video crew from France is coming.”

The thank the staff, the families have donated a painting “The Glacier and the Poppies” painted by family member Brian Scott. Grant, Carol and Brian Scott, as well as Comox Valley Seniors Village General Manager Michael Aikins, staff and residents were all on hand for the presentation.

Dorothy and Ralph Scott went through all three levels of care at the seniors facility on Headquarters Road until they passed away this spring at ages 91 and 92 respectively. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in September, having been married in 1942.

Family members say they could not have administered the level of care their parents received. Dorothy and Ralph were together with other retirees of their generation and enjoyed an active social life in the modern retirement community. Staffing at all three levels were exceptional and the Comox Valley is lucky to have this facility, said the family.

Societly urgently needs volunteers in Campbell River

“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” – Sherry Anderson, Author This quote echoes the sentiment of the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C, especially in Campbell River.

Volunteers are a treasured resource

that allow the Society to provide a range of free services for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

They help the Society with everything from making phone calls to caregivers to facilitating support groups.

“They are absolutely invaluable to our team,” says Jane Hope,

the Society’s regional Support and Education Coordinator.

An estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over age 65 already deals with Alzheimer’s disease or another other dementia. And that number is projected to double over the next generation.

The resulting need for assistance is

soaring, and volunteers help ensure that the demand is met.

The need locally right now is for facilitators to run monthly support group meetings, and volunteers who can make outreach calls to caregivers for the First Link early intervention program.

The positions have a few basic

requirements: * Excellent listening and empathetic skills * Knowledge of dementia or a willingness to learn * Facilitation skills or a willingness to learn * Formal or informal caregiving an asset Training is provided, and a one-

year commitment is required.

“I have been honoured and touched by the many caregivers who have shared the challenges of their journey with me,” says Anne Jankowski, who volunteers as the First Link support volunteer.

“It’s exceptionally rewarding to know that I have made a meaningful difference

in someone’s life.”
