A new modular home has been constructed in Winlaw to house members of the Slocan Valley BC Ambulance Service (BCAS), giving working paramedics a home away from home.

The opening of the new ambulance station drew a small crowd to the eclectic

Slocan Valley community, including Regional District of Central Kootenay Area H director Walter Popoff, new Denver mayor Anne Bunka and BCAS director Paul Swain.

“This will help us achieve some good quality medical care,” said Swain.

In 2008 when Popoff negotiated a new agreement with BCAS for the fire hall, the provincial BCAS organization noted they had a modular home available for installation at the Winlaw site. Popoff jumped at the chance

to have it installed.

“It gives us more permanency and it gives paramedics a place they can hang their hat rather than a motel room,” said Popoff.

Latest look at local items selling on eBay. A bird’s-eye-view postcard of Ymir circa 1905 drew seven bids and sold for $90 Cdn recently.

It shows the town at its peak, with a long line of false-fronted hotels and stores, as well as the old Wildhorse Creek bridge, and in the beautiful old hospital in the distance. Only a few buildings depicted remain, including the Hotel Ymir and Ymir Palace Inn. The seller was in Victoria.

Ymir postcards are fairly hard to come by. One other copy of this card sold in 2006 for $57 US. • A matted photo showing a holiday crowd outside of the Crown Point Hotel in Trail sold for $51 US. A note on the back suggested it may have been taken on July 1, 1901.

The Crown Point was built in 1895 and still stands, but doesn’t look much like it did then.

The seller was in Aldergrove.

• A signed copy of Jim Wardner’s autobiography that once belonged to a former Idaho governor, sold for $247.50 US. Wardner was a classic mining prince, who seemed to show

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Reused, Recovered, Revisioned’ (steel and mirrored glass) Growing up on the Western Canadian prairies, Carl Schlichting never really envisioned making his home in the mountainous terrain of the West Kootenay. The Winlaw-based artist believes in change and embracing new pursuits though, so he’s just fine with how things are. “ I was always taken by my surroundings when I was growing up,” he says, reflecting. “The endless stretch of the land and the enormity of the prairie sky were influential, certainly. But so was having a bunch of talented siblings. They really inspired me to pursue my artistic side.”

Schlichting’s innovative sculpture on display here has little in common with vast panoramas. It does emphasize the inventiveness and dexterity he possesses in a variety of mediums.

“I learn easily the language of each material and I love many. Finding my own voice continues to be a journey of unknown horizons,” he says, smiling disarmingly. “Kind of like those prairie ones, the sky and land meet somewhere way off.”

Schlichting studied fine art at Vancouver City College (Langara) after leaving the prairies, then acquired additional understanding and comprehension through travel and study over 25 years in his career as a museum curator and gallery owner.

That background has deepened his knowledge of materials and process while opening up new avenues in sculpting form and expressive exploration.

‘Reused, Recovered and Revisioned’ is eye-catching, clever and inventive.

Taking a 12 foot length of discarded

pipe, Schlichting has mounted it on a circular base to provide contrast, then cut out abstract, puzzle-like pieces mirrored in clear glass that protrude at strategic points in the vertical length.

The top of the sculpture ruptures in an explosion of raggedly wild concentric forms similar to the cut-outs that provide depth perception along the vertical stem. There is lovely counterbalance displayed through Schlichting’s careful, deliberate inclusion of the mirrored glass, and an abundance of cohesion in the

various contrasts of the piece.

An accomplished, award-winning ice and snow sculptor, Schlichting continues to expand his repertoire of mediums. Comfortable in all, ‘Recovered, Reused, Revisioned’ is a testament to his imagination and range. Using everyday materials and careful construction, he delivers an abstract work that captivates and enchants.

Over the past year, the project reached a major milestone with the substantial completion of excavation, including the powerhouse, intake and tunnels.

Kettle River Watershed plan discussed Grand Forks briefs The findings of the first phase of the Kettle River Watershed Study management plan were discussed in detail with the community at the Midway Community Hall on June 18. Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) Area C Director Grace McGregor and chair of the Stakeholder Advisory Group pointed out that this study will allow everyone to move forward with the management plan.

Silver Kettle Village work underway Development is well underway for Silver Kettle Village located on 72nd Avenue and 25th Street in Grand Forks. Landon Elliott, marketing director for Golden Life Management, noted that construction is ahead of schedule but the plans to open in September remain. “Everything is going great,” he said. “Rooms are all booked but as time goes on, we get some and lose some.” Elliott encourages residents to apply and to have their names put on a waiting list.

The BCAS is now using modular struc-

tures for construction of new ambulance stations in a cost-effective approach to provide quality crew quarters. The structures’ specifications ensure the buildings meet or exceed BC Building Code standards for health and safety.

These modular structures are erected in a climate-controlled environment rather than on-site where extremes in temperature

and poor weather conditions can delay the construction process.

They can be erected, dismantled and moved as operational needs change.

In all, the BCAS responds to calls from 184 ambulance stations located throughout the province, utilizing the services of 3,668 paramedics and dispatchers and 349 support and management personnel.

“Super food” is a term used to promote certain foods as having additional health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Have you ever wondered if these “super foods” can really make a big difference in your diet and your health? Let’s take a look at three of these “super foods” and the hype surrounding them.

Quinoa (pronounced ‘keen-wah’): Quinoa has become increasingly popular with the attention surrounding ancient grains. It is a good source of fibre, protein, and minerals and is a popular glutenfree choice that can be included in salads, entrées, and even desserts. Quinoa has a nutty flavour, with a fluffy yet crunchy

texture. It comes in a variety of colours including yellow, red, pink, and black. It takes only 15 minutes to cook in boiling water and is a great alternative to other grains like rice and pasta.

Goji Berries (aka Wolfberries): Goji berries are small red fruits that are a common ingredient in traditional Chinese cuisine. They are mildly sweet and sour, and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, or desserts.

They are usually sold as juice or dried. Goji juice is ready for consumption but dried goji berries need to be

cooked. Goji berries are a source of a variety of minerals and vitamin C, however, the vitamin C content varies amongst the dried berry products. There are several health claims associated with this berry including lowered blood cholesterol levels and antiaging benefits, however, more research is needed to support these claims. Goji berries are a source of several nutrients but they should not replace other foods in your diet.

Chia Seeds: Chia seeds, grown and harvested in South America and Mexico, have been touted as a

popular “super food”.

Some research shows that chia seeds have the potential to support heart and digestive health, thanks to their high fat (as omega-3 fatty acid) and fibre content. Chia seeds have a mild, almost non-existent flavour, and contain no cholesterol. They are gluten free and low in saturated fats.

Chia seeds are recommended as a protein choice for vegetarians and vegans, as they contain all the amino acids we need to consume. Chia seeds can be purchased as ground whole chia seeds, chia flour, and chia oil. Chia flour can be used as a glu-

ten-free alternative in place of all-purpose flour in baking recipes. Thus, chia seeds can be a great food choice but should be treated as an addition to your diet and not an agent of disease prevention.

There is no one food item that can provide all the energy and nutrients your body needs. These super foods may be beneficial in many ways but they should not be a replacement for a well-balanced diet.

Give these foods a try by adding them to your favourite dishes for some extra nutrition and variety!

Teen charged with social media luring is sentenced Trail briefs A Greater Trail teenager escaped jail time but was sentenced to two years of treatment programs for using social media websites to lure children into performing sexual acts.

The youth, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pled guilty to 10 out of 47 charges earlier this year related to Internet luring, extortion and impersonation. He was sentenced Tuesday in Castlegar court.

The youth was deemed “compliant” with a wide range of assessments determining what his motivations were, which steps need to be utilized to avoid recidivism rates and how to treat his “addiction.”

The boy’s legal counsel described him as “remorseful” and optimistic about moving on with his life with aid from counsellors and probation officers.

The judge’s decision for no jail time received support.

“The assessments were all clear that to do anything in a custodial setting would be counter-productive,” said Philip Seagram, the deputy regional Crown counsel. “It wouldn’t help him and it wouldn’t help society, and the emphasis is on treatment. This is the best way that that treatment and supervision can be accomplished.”

Hot spots a cause for concern A bird’s eye view of the terrain above Trail has revealed a major “hot spot” that could threaten homes with flooding in West Trail along Gorge Creek.

There are three sluff areas poised above the city—loaded with logs, branches, leaves, rocks and soil—that could cause more landslides and flooding if they are not taken care of, Coun. Gord DeRosa told Trail city

council Monday night at a regular meeting.

On Monday afternoon the hot spot was discovered after the city sent its public works manager and a geotechnical engineer up in a helicopter with members of the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) from Nelson to assess any potential trouble spots brewing after Trail was waterlogged with flotsam and jetsam spewing down from its bounding upper rocky reaches Saturday.

Those areas are amassing debris, said DeRosa, around the breaks of a flue where it enters the channel of the creek. If the debris builds up and water breaches the area the city is “in trouble,” as it was when Trail Creek flooded the Gulch in 1997.

There is “a very serious one higher up that needs to be resolved,” DeRosa said.

“These all come as a surprise, of course, and things can hap-

pen very quickly.”

With over 180 millimetres of rain this month feeding the rising waters of Gorge Creek, the creek’s banks are eroding.

Once the bank sluffs into the creek, if it doesn’t actually block the creek and produce a pool behind it, in releasing it will carry with it debris that will plug off the flue, leading to a mudslide.

Beaver Valley gets youth council Youth of the Beaver Valley are now officially politically engaged.

With the creation of the inaugural youth council for 2012-2013, young people up to the age of 19 now have a voice through the newly created Beaver Valley Youth Council.

The seven-person council—including two mayors—was created on June 11 in Montrose municipal council chambers, said Jill Prince, the

Village of Fruitvale councillor charged with overseeing the council.

With lots of resources, energy, connections and plenty of communication being amassed, the seeds of a flourishing council are sprouting, said Prince.

“We have all of the things to make this thing successful,” she said.

The council is now looking to hire a youth coordinator to handle the reins of council, to provide some direction and guidance as they make their way through matters.

In the contract which the council signed with Columbia Basin Trust for an $25,000 annual grant, the initial plan was to spend $5,000 on developing the council, $5,000 for purchasing equipment— building up a store of equipment for use within the region—and $15,000 to pay for activities.

The council has been setting up art stands at different locations around town to spruce up the downtown core that is currently in the midst of extensive renovations.

The RCAC is calling these events “Random Acts of Culture.”

The first of these took place on June 22 beside the post office on Columbia Avenue.

Nadine Tremblay, who was organizing the event, said the art could be anything from a painting to just a word, with imagination the only limit.

The second event took place at the Rossland Mountain Market, which had its first day of the season Thursday.

The market was busy in its new location, one block up the hill from downtown, between the old fire hall and St. Andrews Parish Church.

The finished paintings will be exhibited in a secret location according to the arts council.

Rachael Roussin, administrator for the RCAC said people are embracing the project.

“I think they’re

She said it’s the perfect time to reinvent Rossland with art, while it is being literally reinvented with construction.

“What is everyone’s Rossland? Everyone has a different idea.

The 11 annual Pass Creek Bluegrass Festival is in the final planning stages as the full weekend of pickinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and grinninâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gets its own fine-tuning. A handful of dedicated musicians has just about completed all the details for three days of great entertainment, food, hospitality and abundant memories to take home for one and all. Ruth Kozub, one of the planners, says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just amateurs and never know whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming.â&#x20AC;? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what

The recently passed Omnibus Bill C-38 basically guts the environmental assessment process for big energy projects such as the Enbridge pipeline.

There is concern that even if the JRP recommends against the project that the Conservatives will attempt to push it through by way of a cabinet decision.

The 1,177km pipeline would move some 525,000 barrels of raw bitumen daily from the oil sands to a new Kitimat Marine Terminal for shipping to the U.S. and Asia by supertanker. Citizens in the Pacific Northwest as well as in other parts of B.C. and Canada are mobilizing to

Tip of the Week: Astrology is a natural psychology which honors the reality of archetypes. By their very nature and existence, archetypes imply a deep and intrinsic intelligence woven into the very fabric of and at the source of all life. Generally, this source is referred to as God. The extreme factions of science represent an atheistic perspective, where there is no God. Yet, can the intelligent design of life be traced to randomness? This is the common assumption in science. The anthropomorphic image of God as a great man in the sky may well be an infantile notion. Yet dismissing the existence of a creative force in nature is extreme, a case of ‘throwing out the baby with the bathwater’. Archetypes are the building blocks of nature and these can basically be recognized as shapes. Every shape can be understood to have its own unique ‘character’ and, by extension, we may cite differences in the ‘psychology’ of a circle compared with that of a square or a triangle, for example. Yet, archetypes are much more complex as well. The ancient Greeks were aware of archetypes and interestingly, portrayed these as ‘The Gods’. That they projected anthropomorphic or human qualities upon these archetypal forces, for the sake of ‘telling the story’ may well be the roots of the notion of the great man in the sky which resembles Zeus. Paradoxically, Chaos Theory proves that order precedes chaos in nature and thus implies intelligence, creativity and purpose. Yet to see the clear evidence of this all we have to do is look closely at nature.
