Princeton Hospital will be on LLTO status next weekend from July 6 to 8 from midnight to 8 a.m.

During LLTO (life, limb, threatened organ) statuses only the most serious cases will be seen by a

doctor on call. Other patients will have to travel to another hospital for care, most likely Penticton.

A nurse will be at Princeton Hospital to determine whether a local doctor should be called in.

Interior Health recommends bringing your wallet, shoes, clothes and to make arrangement for your return ride home.

A helicopter landed in the Chevron parking lot last month to bring 69-year-old Arline Siteman to Kelowna for heart surgery. Siteman would like to see a permanent helicopter pad built in Princeton.

A woman who was picked up in a helicopter after having a severe heart attack would like to see a permanent heli-pad built in Princeton.

A helicopter touched down in the Chevron parking lot last month to fly Arline Siteman to Kelowna for heart surgery.

Although Siteman was grateful the helicopter made it, she is upset tourists and other people crowded around to watch and take videos and photos.

“The helicopter should be able to land near the hospital, or even the airport,” said the 69-year-old.

The helicopter paramedics tried their hardest to keep the people away, but it was still a stressful situation for the entire family, Arline said.

“There needs to be a much safer way. The helicopter crew is very good, but they can only do so much.”

A helicopter can land anywhere in an emergency, but weather and time of day can impact whether it can fly, said BC Ambulance chief operating officer Les Fisher.

A pad would cost at least $250,000, he said.

“Heli-pads may look like a piece of asphalt on the ground, but there is a lot to putting them in place and maintaining them,” Fisher said.

He said how often the heli-pad is used and the amount of time it saves have to be looked at by Interior Health, which owns and operated landing pads in the region.

Siteman said she is lucky a helicopter was available to take her to Kelowna, the closest place to get heart surgery.

If they had been busy - like they all were when a man had a heart attack last week - she would have died before the ambulance got her to Keremeos, she said.

“It took me only 25 minutes to get from here to Kelowna. Anymore time and I wouldn’t have made it.

The ambulance also included equipment not found in normal ambulances that can treat patients on the way.

“I’m not putting down ambulances - they’re saved my life before. But I wouldn’t want to wait for the HART ambulance to get here,” Siteman said.

“I’d rather get to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Am I the only one who doesn’t understand what’s so great about the HART ambulance?

It’s presented as a gift to Princeton - an innovative way to save the lives of critically ill or injured people.

But this doesn’t make sense.

HART (the High Acuity Response Team) is based out of Penticton, and recently took almost two hours to get to a heart attack victim in Princeton.

It took another hour and a half to get the man to Penticton Hospital.

Three and a half hours seems like a long time to wait for treatment. (By the way, the man had a serious heat attack and ended up in Kelowna for surgery, according to his family.)

If the HART ambulance was based in Princeton, it would be a whole other story. This speciality ambulance is highly equipped to deal with emergency situations, and has an acute care nurse onboard.

But what’s the point if it has to drive from Penticton? And then all the way back?

The good thing about HART is that it allows Princeton’s doctors and nurses to stay in the community, and care for other emergencies. Usually they would have to travel with the sick or injured person in the ambulance.

But this still doesn’t change the fact that it will take someone at least three hours to get to a Penticton Hospital.

If more doctors worked in Princeton, there wouldn’t be a need for HART. Another doctor could fill in at Princeton Hospital while the other went with the patient.

I would rather see a friend or family member transported in a regular ambulance, instead of waiting for HART. Yes, they wouldn’t receive the same level of care on the drive there, but at least they wouldn’t be left waiting for HART to arrive.

On another note, this is my last newspaper I’ll be putting out for Princeton before I start work at the North Shore Outlook in North Vancouver.

I’ve enjoyed my work in Princeton, and I would like to thank the excellent women I worked with.

They are truly great, caring, hardworking people, and I couldn’t have done it without them. This paper wouldn’t be the same without them.

When the names Archibald, Coles and Mowat are mentioned most Canadian might ask who these guys played for. One hundred and fortyfive years ago, those three, John A. MacDonald and 29 others finalized the documents that created the confederation of colonies that became Canada. Beyond the 1867 date and the anecdotes of John A. MacDonald’s fondness for good whiskey, the history of our founding is rarely taught in our public schools. When our founding is presented, progressive historians misrepresent the facts to create a revisionist view of our history.

Our founders are portrayed as privileged (mostly) English gentleman who gathered in 1867 to “do a deal” and establish a “non-American” federal confederation.

The prevailing and distorted view of our history is one that suggests Canada’s founders celebrated social democracy and collectivist notions that trump individual rights and freedoms. This, we have been taught, is what distinguishes Canadians from our American cousins. Our notions of peace, order and good government is presented as somehow more attractive than the U.S.A.’s legacy of guns, greed and God. The truth, as documented in the letters, essays and debates of our founders, demonstrates our founding values and principles to be much more in line with those of Americans like James Madison than socialists like Pierre Trudeau.

Direct communications of our Canadian founding fathers reference John Locke, William Blackstone and others who look to the individual and warn of collectivism. Our founders looked for guidance and direction to the Federalist Papers, the pre-cursor documents to the American Constitution, to craft the documents that would form the basis of our confederation. Nowhere in the record is there mention of reliance on the tenets of Fabian socialism or early Bolshevism guiding our founding principles.

Canada and the United States share a history based on British Common Law, that evolved from the Magna Carta, the Act of Settlement and others, all of which seek to protect the rights of the individual from oppression by the Crown or government.

Our Fathers of Confederation were raised in an era of British exceptionalism. They were patriotic and for the most part loyal monarchists and would have been educated in British history. They would have witnessed

the development of the U.S. federation and sought to adopt the best attributes of that confederation in our own. It is unlikely, at best, that the social democratic principles of the modern Trudeau Liberals and the NDP existed, much less were considered worthy.

Documentation confirms our Fathers of Confederation held that individuals were endowed inalienable rights by their Creator, the rights to life, liberty and the enjoyment of personal property. Like Locke and Madison, they believed that government ought to be limited, constrained by the people and restricted by clearly enumerated responsibilities. All these concepts are contained in the British North America Act that created Canada in 1867, and in references to historical individual rights of the British people.

Although these are traditional British and Canadian values, they don’t fit the modern Liberal narrative that Canadians are, because of our mythical social democratic roots, morally superior to Americans. Canada’s recognition of individual responsibility and rights has been systematically erased from our “official” history and been replaced with notions of social democracy and community.

Pierre Trudeau moved to significantly limit our individual rights with his ill-conceived Constitution Act of 1982. At the behest of the NDP and with Trudeau’s support, private property rights were expressly omitted from the Charter and the Constitution of 1982. In Trudeau’s Constitution all the basic rights of speech, religion, the press and association, that most Canadians believe we share with the Americans, are severely limited by government. To assume, as an individual Canadian, explicit protection from government as a matter of rights, is not just false, it is dangerous — ask any gun owner, or anyone who has run up against a human rights tribunal.

We are fortunate to have a current federal government that at least mouths the platitudes of personal freedom. This may change, and other political parties have little concern for individual rights, and ironically, through our Charter of Rights, enjoy the means to further oppress individual rights in the name of the common good.

While there is much to celebrate about Canada on July 1, we should also keep in mind that the Canada we think we have, and was envisioned by our freedom-loving Fathers of Confederation, is not the Canada we have become. We can thank Pierre Trudeau for this, but the blame resides with each of us. On July 1, learn about our Fathers of Confederation — perhaps with some education we can reinvigorate their dream of liberty.

The 44th annual Racing Days event along with the 41st running of the Similkameen Cup took place in Princeton last Friday, June 29. Local owner June Dunte took home the 41st Similkameen Cup with her horse - A Lasting Peace ridden by jockey Tyler Walker.

The annual Rotary Parade parade held on Saturday was colourful and fun.

Countdown to 5th annual airshow Contributed

The official count down to the 2012 Princeton Air Show for Saturday, July 21 has begun. Now entering its fifth year, the Princeton Air Show takes to the skies in less than two months!

This year A Salute to Warbirds will feature a number of iconic Second World War fighters and trainers.

Along with warbirds this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show features Kent Pietsch and Blender Airshows. Kent will perform three different acts including a comedy, â&#x20AC;&#x153;dead stickâ&#x20AC;? aerobatic and a jaw dropping landing on a recreation vehicle.

We also anticipate a larger presence from the Royal Canadian Air Force and new this year PYROTECHNICS. In order for spectators to keep up with the latest air show information and news, check out the offi-

There was standing room only at the Princeton Health Care Public Forum this past Thursday evening.

Organized by the Save Our Hospital Coalition, Princeton and Area residents participated in the first “open door” meeting with elected and appointed officials since the scheduled emergency room closures began on May 1.

So, was the forum a success? From an audience participation standpoint, it certainly was. Through personal stories and pointed questions, residents shared their frustration and displeasure with the present state of health care in our community.

And in a potentially volatile atmosphere, residents of Princeton showed a lot of class, remaining respectful throughout the forum.

It was also heartwarming to hear so many tributes given to our local health care team.

It is clear that Princeton appreciates the work done by our local doctors, nurses, lab technicians, radiologists, therapists and other care givers.

The other purpose for the forum, however, was to move forward with a discussion on possible solutions for our health care problems. And in that regard, the forum was less successful.

There were two questions that the panelists were asked to address: 1)What can be done to improve health care to Princeton and area residents? and 2) What would you describe as essential health services for Princeton and area?

Beyond the obvious need to restore 24/7 emergency services, there were very few suggestions made to improve local health care and none of the panelists made an effort to define “essential health services” for our community.

So if the politicians are unable or unwilling to answer these

questions, then perhaps the community will need to do it for them.

Save Our Hospital Coalition is optimistic that the ER problem will be remedied, at least for the short term.

Pensioners oppose PGH emergency room closures Rock Hounders take on Coalmont Contributed

The British Columbia Old Age Pensioners Organization hosted its annual convention in Agassiz, B.C. on June 11 through 13.

Princeton Branch #185 requested consideration of an emergency resolution on the issue of Princeton General Hospital cutting back on emergency services.

It was agreed that the area serviced by PGH is too large not to have 24/7 ER services and the resolution passed unanimously. Although only one step in moving towards addressing this important issue, having the support and backing of the provincial body of the OAPO gives significant credibility and weight to the local branch’s voice.

In addition to conducting regular business, the OAPO also celebrated its 80th anniversary.

Founded in 1932, the OAPO has championed the rights of seniors for eight decades and is primarily

responsible for founding the Old Age Security program in Canada.

Today their role is very diverse and they are involved in myriad issues, advocating on senior’s behalf on many of the concerns facing an evergrowing elderly demographic.

One of the core functions of the annual convention is to consider resolutions that have been submitted by individual provincial OAPO branches.

Most locations are represented by attending delegates and after discussion and evaluation, the resolutions are considered for adoption by a vote from the floor.

Most resolutions address health and financial issues that affect seniors and when adopted by the OAPO, become part of their mandate for future support and advocacy.

One of the resolutions dealt with the internal issue of the organization’s name and a motion was carried to change our name to ‘British Columbia Pensioners and Seniors Organization’.

Princeton Rock and Fossil Club celebrates the success of its first three-day, campout event.

On June 22 through 24, we entertained a large group of rock hounders from across the province, with a number of excursions, which show cased just a few of this areas mineral, and fossil treasures.

A special note of thanks goes to Bob and Diane Stern, owners of the Mozey-On-Inn, in Coalmont, who arranged the excursion to an active Gold Mine on Roany Creek.

A special thank you to the owners of the mine who shut down their operations for the day that we may explore.

We could not have pulled off this event without the generosity of Michelle Cole, proprietor of the Coalmont Hotel.

Not only did she provide the use of the field, behind her hotel for the campout and displays, she provided the power, access to her kitchen, shelter from the rain, and so much more.

Excursions to various gold, fossil, amber, agate and thunder egg sites, was only one element of the campout event.

Thanks to the generous contributions of many Princeton, and area businesses, as well as many individuals, we were able to host a silent auction, featuring numerous items of significant value.

MIDDLETON, PETER WILLIAM July 16, 1935 – June 25, 2012 It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Peter on June 26th. He is survived by Janet, his loving wife of 48 years, and two sons Malcolm (Heather), Martin (Anne-Marie) and five grandsons.

Peter and Janet resided in Langley B.C. during his 25 year tenure with the Attorney General Correction Branch. Upon retirement he and Janet moved to Princeton where they resided together for the past 14 years. Peter will be sorely missed by all.
