Mayors tighten belts Ives, Jangula lose weight in competition that began in January With only days to go, Comox Mayor Paul Ives and Courtenay Mayor Larry Janugla are completing their final weigh-ins for their Cut the Waist challenge.

The challenge was initiated at the end of January, and the mayor to lose the most weight by percentage will have his community flag fly over the other city or town hall July 4.

From a starting point of just over 191 pounds on Jan. 31, Mayor Ives weighed in Thursday morning at just under 176 pounds, for a total weight loss of just over 15 pounds in the past five months.

From June 2011, Ives has lost just over 28 pounds for a total percentage weight reduction of 13.5 per cent overall; however, since the start of this challenge, it has been a total of eight per cent reduction.

No matter who wins or loses the challenge, both mayors feel they

have not only accomplished personal goals and objectives in eating well, exercising regularly and having a more balanced life, but also they have helped to encourage other members of their communities to live more active, healthy and fit lifestyles.

Mayor Ives would like to thank his family members for their positive encouragement and the public for their supportive comments, and to acknowledge the important role the Comox Recreation Centre staff (in particular, fitness studio and spin class instructors) have played in helping him to meet this challenge.

These lyrics in the popular 1970s song Signs by Canadian group Five Man Electrical Band make Comox Valley resident Les Hargrave think of the Courtenay Civic Cemetery.

Hargrave buried his parents’ cremated remains in the cemetery in 2004, and since then he’s seen more rules and restrictions implemented.

“There weren’t all these rules,” Hargrave said of when he buried his parents’ remains. “There weren’t all these signs. There’s more and more restrictions.”

A selection of rules on a large sign at the cemetery are: Wreaths and floral arrangements are allowed for one week after a burial; fresh-cut flowers are allowed throughout the year but only in Cityissued in-ground vases; one potted plant not exceeding six inches in diameter is allowed for one week at Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas; and artificial flowers or plastic

wreaths are allowed from Nov. 1 to March 31.

The sign also states: “For the safety of the public, grounds maintenance crews, as well as the appearance of the cemetery, the following items are not permitted in the cemetery: personal mementos, photos, decorative vases, candles, landscape rock, borders, fencing, plant hooks, solar lights, plants and plantings. Unauthorized items placed at gravesites will be removed without notice, and placed in the general pick up area.”

Hargrave and his wife Sue said the numerous rules at the cemetery make it feel dehumanized and impersonal.

“It’s not for the people; it’s for the ease and convenience of maintenance, that’s what it’s laid out for,” said Sue. “There’s a compromise somewhere — they’ve got to be able to maintain it, not in a costly way, but it also has to work for the families that have got people buried here.”

Courtenay director of legislative services John Ward pointed out the general rules have always been there, but over the years they were tightened — and approved by Courtenay council each time — to

clean up the cemetery. He noted the rule regarding mementos was changed for a couple of reasons.

“Some people didn’t like seeing all the clutter, you know, we had everything from shepherds’ hooks, to Christmas trees to, you name it — some fairly large structures and a lot of people had concerns about that,” said Ward, adding the rule is also in place to ensure safety during maintenance.

“There were safety issues with the equipment, basically grass-cutting equipment, so if the grass cutters hit some objects they are prone to fly through the air, so they could be projectiles.”

Ward added maintenance is also the reason upright headstones are not permitted — except for a special area of the cemetery since about a year ago.

“We had quite a few requests for that, upright monuments, that’s why we did that,” he said, adding he doesn’t believe any are there yet because the change is fairly new. “You can’t have one in the rest of the cemetery and that’s the maintenance issue. They need to be flat so the mowers can go right over top.”

ing over graves to cut the grass seems disrespectful.

Mary Burke, whose son was buried there in 1992, said the same.

“All they want to do is sit on a ride-on mower and drive around and do the bare minimum,” said Burke.

“It’s a mark of disrespect.”

Also, she and the Hargraves have struggled to find the grave markers when it’s snowed.

Les and Sue said a cemetery should be a place of historical significance; a reflection of the value that a community places on the lives of people who lived, died and contributed to that community; and a place for families and friends to quietly contemplate and reflect on their love for the deceased in ways meaningful to them, including flowers, mementos and photographs.

Les suggested a citizen’s committee could be set up to provide input on the future layout of the cemetery, and how it’s maintained.

Ward said that would be a decision for Courtenay council, like the changes to the rules over the years, and he thought people were happy with the direction the City is taking with the cemetery.

Growing Chefs educates children about agriculture Caitlin McKinnon Record Staff

Merri Schwartz was frustrated when she founded Growing Chefs, a Vancouver-based non-profit organization aimed at educating kids about local and sustainable agriculture.

While the Comoxborn pastry chef was well-acquainted with the theories and practices of sustainable agriculture, she found that the public was not.

Growing Chefs’ executive director Helen Stortini explains that working in fine dining, Schwartz constantly encountered chefs who “had all this knowledge about local and sustainable food, and had great relationships with local farmers and producers…

But it wasn’t getting outside of the kitchen walls.”

If Schwartz wished to inform and empower a community of local

eaters, she would have to do it herself.

Schwartz, eager to extend this valuable wealth of professional knowledge to the public domain, established Growing Chefs in 2005 as “an avenue for chefs to engage a greater community.”

The program aspires to create a forum for chefs, educators, growers, community groups, and families to collectively promote awareness of food sustainability.

With roughly 30 participating schools throughout the Lower Mainland, the program is rapidly expanding; and this spring, two local elementary schools are participating in a Comox Valley pilot program.

Once paired with a classroom, chef volunteers make bi-weekly visits; over the course

of three months, students are introduced to the keystone concepts of sustainable agriculture and will grow, harvest, and cook their own vegetables.

Stortini praises Alexander McNaughton — one of “an amazing group of volunteers from the Valley” — for helping to bring the pilot program to our community.

When McNaughton fondly recounted his experience at Growing Chefs to his mother Patricia Foster, she suggested the program apply for a Community Food Action Initiative Grant from the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) to fund a pilot in the Comox Valley.

The non-profit organization

took her advice, and discovered in January that Growing Chefs had been approved for funding.

Once Growing Chefs had successfully secured grant funding, everything else fell into place, says Stortini.

Having “all the pieces of the puzzle” – namely community interest in sustainable agriculture, enthusiastic volunteers, and available producers, the Comox Valley is “the perfect fit for a pilot program,” she explains.

Several enthusiastic chefs volunteered to be matched with elementary school classes, and a handful of devoted growers contributed to the project.

There is “so much enthusiasm about local

food (in this community)” Stortini proclaims.

She was especially impressed by the “savvy group of kids” who participated in the pilot program, noting that several chefs have reported feeling like they’ve “learned just as much as the students have.”

Because three of the eight local chefs who volunteered were French-speaking, Growing Chefs was able to offer students both French and English instruction. The pilot program, which ran from March till June, has been exceedingly successful. Provided Growing Chefs can again secure funding and an eager body of volunteers, the program will return.

Morin’s duck has the right stuff to win In one of the fastest and most furious finishes in Ducky 500 history, Dean Morin raced from behind to beat Margaret Bono by a beak, as 5,850 rubber ducks came thundering down the Courtenay River in the 25th anniversary edition of the Comox Rotary Applebee’s Classic race.

As usual the raft of ducklings were startled from the gate at the confluence of the Puntledge and the Tsolem rivers by the crack of the HMCS Quadra cannon at 1 p.m. sharp.

Excited cheering youngsters lined the riverside and punters tried in vain to purchase a Ducky 500 ticket, which were sold out before noon.

The yellow horde threatened to overwhelm the brave Rotarians, scooping madly in every direction in their tin boats, but very few of the rubber rapscallions escaped and they will return in 2013 for the 26th running.

Four outstanding St. Joseph’s General Hospital community members received recognition for their hard work and commitment to care with compassion.

The Sister Pat Macaulay Service Awards were handed out last week at the hospital, and this year, the award categories were expanded to include four areas: Acute care staff, residential care staff, volunteer and physician.

Arnie Auerbach, Shelley Gibson, Heather Holm and Dr. Jason Wale each received the award — and plenty of praise for their continued efforts at the hospital.

The Sister Pat Macaulay Service Awards are named in honour of the Sisters of St. Joseph’s commitment to health care at the hospital, as exemplified by Sister Pat Macaulay. She served three terms at St. Joseph’s.

Auerbach, who has volunteered at the hospital for 15 years, received the volunteer award from the emergency department’s Annette MoulaisonDavis.

“The emerge staff would like to take this opportunity to recognize the gentle care and empathy that you share with all our patients, and not only our patients, but our staff as well,” Moulaison-Davis told Auerbach. “Everyone has a special piece in our puzzle and you are one of the pieces that complete our puzzle.”

Auerbach was away sick for some time this year and MoulaisonDavis noted his absence was immediately felt.

Gibson fought back tears as she accepted the award, and noted she always knew she wanted to be a nurse — even when others told her she couldn’t do it.

“One of my school counsellors told me at

She then plans to work in Hawaii for six months, and at some point she plans to travel back to Nepal and volunteer again.

“In my first year (of schooling), I went and did one of my clinical experiences in Nepal at a teaching hospital, so I plan on going back there to do some volunteer work as well,” said Jorgensen. “There’s so many things I can do once I graduate so it’ll kind of be — I’ve got a bit of a timeline of things I want to get done.”

Highland graduate Rose Prieto couldn’t attend the bursary lunch because she was

out treeplanting to pay for her education. She’s just about to enter her third year at UVic, where she is working towards a double major degree in Spanish and environmental studies.

Prieto is of Mexican and Canadian heritage and plans to become a teacher, using her cultural background and language skills to work as a liaison between Canada and South America to improve communities’ environmental practices.

Neither of Prieto’s parents have a college education and “by Canadian standards are impoverished,” according to Prieto.

The young woman has spent the past three summers treeplanting, and held a part-time job in Victoria during the school year in an effort to finish her

Two Comox Valleyraised female university students will receive a hand-up to finish their studies.

Mikaela Jorgensen and Rose Prieto each received $1,000 bursaries from the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) – Comox Valley.

Pat James, previous CFUW bursary committee chair, noted students must be graduates of a Comox Valley secondary school and they must be in at least their second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree.

“This is really to help younger women complete their education and go on and get a proper university degree,” James said at the CFUW bursary lunch last week, adding there’s more bursaries for first-year students available, and CFUW wanted to ensure students further along in their studies have a chance for financial help to finish.

She also noted bursaries are needs-based rather than solely academic, and CFUW chooses to give bursaries so the money goes to young women who could really use it.

“This is why we established this because we wanted to help somebody in need,” she said.

“We like to give the money to someone who can make use of the money.”

Vanier graduate Jorgensen said the money will certainly come in handy for her. The University of Victoria student is just starting her fourth year in the nursing program. She’s doing her practicum, which is unpaid and takes up the majority of her time, while she also works a part-time job in Victoria.

Between school and work, she is busy seven days per week, but she still relies heavily on student loans — and the amount she receives each semester has diminished recently.

“Right now, I had basically $2,000 of unmet need that I wasn’t able to come up with, so this bursary has helped me pretty much pay for my tuition next semester,” explained Jorgensen.

“I was really, really happy; it’s a really big deal for me to have that.”

Jorgensen will graduate as a

studies without incurring major financial debt.

She has volunteered abroad with Canada World Youth for six months in an orphanage and a hospital, (in Mexico and Honduras), and at another Mexican orphanage for four months.

The Comox Valley Canadian Federation of University Women Club (CV CFUW) was formed in June 1983.

It gives out these two university bursaries once per year, and it offers a $500 entrance bursary to a mature female student in the Comox Valley, who is

Ellsay wins gold at national cycle championships Record Staff Courtenay’s Nigel Ellsay was among the new Canadian champions crowned June 28 in Lac Mégantic, QC as the 2012 Canadian Road Cycling Championships continued with time trials for the juniors, masters and para-cyclists.

Ellsay, of the Cycling BC team, climbed the top step of the podium in the men’s juniors division. Ellsay, who last year won the silver medal at these championships, crossed the finish line after the 30km race in a time of 40: 30.88.

“I have been working for the last six months.

I am really happy to get it over with,” said Ellsay, who spent some valuable time in France earlier this spring. “I headed over to France in March, and spent 3.5 months in a French club team.

“Midway through, a rider dropped out and I had the privilege to go race at a Nations Cup in Germany with the national team.

I gained valuable experience and finished 13th in the General Classification.

It’s a good spring!” he told Cycling Canada.

“It’s a pure time trial course. I have been working really hard the last couple of months. It feels great to win the Maple Leaf Jersey.

It’s a big relief, since I have been working towards this objective for the last two months. Last year, I was second and I really wanted it. This year I finally got it.”

The 2012 COLD-FX Canadian Road Championships presented

World champ visits Kenpo The House of Kenpo hosted another Submission Arts Wrestling seminar on June 16-17, run

by Mike Martelle, who currently holds seven different world champion heavyweight titles. Over the past two decades Martelle has an impressive record of 144 wins, 39 losses, nine draws and one no-contest.

On the first day Martelle warmed up the grappling team by taking everyone through several cardio drills to start each of the three-hour training sessions. He then began with reviewing some previous material from past seminars and then moved on to takedowns and open guard position.

Once the grapplers were comfortable in the technique he began to expand on the submissions. He then introduced the grapplers to some new controlling movements.

After each new technique Martelle had the team switch to a new partner so that the experienced wrestler could assist the newer grappler.

On the second day

He followed this up with teaching a variety of techniques that became increasingly more complex. Both experienced and newer grapplers enjoyed the challenge of learning this newer and more challenging material. The weekend seminar ended up with some entertaining five-minute matches between various participants.

All Japan Joint Technique Federation. This title declares Roe to be the Director for British Columbia, he noted.

The Zone 6 Junior Championship was held June 9-10 at beautiful Pheasant Glen golf course in Qualicum Beach.

Despite howling winds and tee boxes set well back, the players shot some wonderful scores, said Dee Horie, Zone 6 Juniors Girls chair.

The low medallist and Bantam champion was 12-year-old Shirin Anjarwalla from Nanaimo GC, who shot 85-78.

Junior champion Emma Rigsby from Crown Isle shot 91-78 followed by Pheasant Glen’s Sarah Nishide, one shot behind.

Pheasant Glen’s Sara Spencer and Michelle Waters finished 180 and 183, respectively, while Crown Isle’s Abigail Rigsby wound up at 186.

Anjarwalla backed up this performance by shooting an impressive 79 at Cowichan GC June 16 to win the Vancouver Island Junior Girls Championship.

The low net winner was Waters with a fine 71.

Waters and Rigsby will represent Zone 6 at the BC Summer Games this month at Hazlemere GC. They will be paired up with Logan Yanick (Crown Isle) and Andrew Foglietta (Nanaimo) as the Vancouver Island North team.

Comox Cup was another success

Blue Devils open outdoor season It truly was the first weekend of summer as the sun shone and 250 swimmers came from all over the Island to participate in the first outdoor meet of the season.

This past weekend, the Blue Devils put on quite a show at the Lewis Centre Memorial Pool with the little Devils demonstrating their prowess in all four strokes while everyone cheered them on.

“It was a weekend of friendly competition, camaraderie and team spirit,” a Blue Devils’ spokesperson said.

“The coaches were delighted with the results and nominated Sydney Kuhnert as swimmer of the meet.

Sydney swam the 100 fly for the very first time and achieved six best times, taking off 11.97 seconds in the 200 medley.”

The top six Blue Devils in each division were: Div. 1 Camil Guay 3rd 100 IM, 4th 50 back/100 free and 3 BT. Sarah Arndt BT 50 free.

Noel Malcolm Thomas

December 15, 1931-June 24, 2012 Noelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing is marked with deep sadness. As a husband, father, friend, and musician, he earned love and respect from all who knew him. His sincerity and genuine appreciation of those around him made gatherings with friends and family especially magic.

Everyone looked forward to being with him.

Noel was born in Kaniva, Victoria, Australia to parents Sydney and Gladys. He married Rose (nee Shatula) in 1957 and the couple came to Canada that year.

Music, particularly jazz, was the thread that ran through Noelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. His love for music started when he participated in an Australian brass band as a nine year old with his father. Music accompanied his career in financial administration after his move to Canada. Rose and Noel moved first to Victoria where he played with the Butchart Buskers at Butchart Gardens, one of several bands he joined. His work with Canada Permanent Trust brought the family to Courtenay in 1975.

Noelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trumpet performances with the Desperation Jazz Band are fondly recalled by Valley residents and fans of the band.

He travelled widely with the group to perform and playing was a passion for him that never dimmed. After retirement he continued to play, most recently with The Lensman, a local Dixieland combo.

Over the years, the family property was home to many animals for which Noel held a deep fondness. The family dogs enjoyed his special affection and many hours walking local trails.

Noel is survived by his wife Rose Ewlen of Comox, sons Glenn, Grant (Ann), and Greg (Karla), all of Australia, and grandchildren Myles, Jake, Mackenzie, Lori, Tara, and Ben. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Lyndon and Sydney (Jill) Thomas. Noel will be missed by many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Noelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musical axiom was â&#x20AC;&#x153;simple melody, clear rhythm.â&#x20AC;?

Memorial donations can be made to the Comox Valley SPCA. A memorial will be held at 1 p.m., July 5, 2012 at the Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road in Courtenay.

The City of Duncan Tourism Totem Sub-Committee (City) and the Duncan Business Improvement Area Society (DBIAS) would like to commission a commemorative totem pole to celebrate Duncanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centennial year. Master Artists with experience carving totem poles are encouraged to submit a proposal that meets the criteria laid out in this Request for Proposals.

Design Details, SpeciďŹ cations, and Deadlines: Design: Preference is for the Artist to incorporate Coast Salish aspects into the cedar carving. The story depicted will commemorate the 100 year history of the City of Duncan.

Log Dimensions and Criteria: The cedar log measurements are to be minimally 30 ft. in length, 2 ft. in diameter at top, and 3 ft. at bottom. The log must be of exceptional quality.

Model Totem Poles (maquettes): The applicant selected to carve the Totem Pole must carve and paint to scale, two 18 inch tall yellow cedar totem poles.

The maquettes must be completed prior to beginning the carving of the 30 ft. pole. These will serve as models for the actual pole.

Completion Date: The two 18 inch tall totem pole maquettes must be completed by October 1, 2012. A penalty up to 10% may be imposed upon failure to meet requirements and deadlines outlined in the RFP and the contract. A realistic timeline for completion of the 30 ft. totem pole must be included with the proposal.

The Company is seeking applications from individuals who would like to be considered for the two available Instructor positions required to deliver a 7-week pilot program this fall (Sept/Oct).

Utilizing the WorkSafe BC â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cable Yarding Systemsâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grapple Yarder and Supersnorkelâ&#x20AC;? Handbooks as a guide, the Program is designed to provide entry level logging skills. Using a combination of classroom instruction and hands on training at an instructional logging site, the Instructors will teach the students the foundation skills of safety, environmental awareness, and job skills, necessary to be successful in both Highlead Tower and Grapple Yarding settings.

The Program will be taught at the Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Englewood Forest Operation, located 1.5 hours north of Campbell River and 1 hour south of Port McNeill. The Instructors will be responsible to assist with ďŹ nalizing the Programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s curriculum and delivery of the 2012 pilot project and the planned 2013 Program (three 7-week programs, May to October).

Individuals interested in this opportunity must have extensive knowledge and experience on the operational side of the logging industry and ideally have worked as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hooktenderâ&#x20AC;? during that time. Strong communication skills, patience and a demonstrated ability to teach are all necessary requirements for these positions.

Junk removed by volunteers Coastal Community Credit Union (CCCU) volunteers and Georgia Strait Alliance rolled up their sleeves, donned safety gloves, and invested many hours of back-breaking work recently.

The objective? To successfully remove thousands of pieces of discarded litter and debris from local beaches across Vancouver Island.

A total of 170 CCCU employees, friends and family participated in the clean up at beaches in Victoria, Chemainus, Nanaimo, Parksville, Courtenay and Campbell River last month. The final tally of items removed included: • 263 plastic bags; • 225 buoys and floats; • 297 glass beverage bottles; • 894 cigarettes and filters; • 228 pieces of rope; • 277 pieces of packaging/containers; • 200 shotgun shells/wadding; • lots of bricks, asphalt and building materials; • broken glass; • 87 light bulbs; • 51 pieces of clothing; • 37 plastic sheets/tarps; • 27 toys; • 9 fishing nets, 4 fishing lines, 5 lures; • 5 tire rims and 2 tires; • 2 life jackets; • an engine, a propane tank, sleeping bag, appliance, tripod and many discarded wrappers, papers and other trash items.

Coastal Community employees Matthew Beckett, Rachael Robinson, Ken Watson, and Ashley Nichols spearheaded this initiative through an employee program called ENRICH. This program was developed as a one-time initiative to empower employees and community groups to work together to make a difference in Island communities in celebration of the company’s achievement as one of Canada’s Top 50 Employers for the first time in 2011.

Audio Video Tech closes after 26 years of service When Barrie Donaldson opened his audio video repair business on Comox Avenue in 1985, televisions were made of large glass cathode ray tubes, and consumers were excited if the cumbersome unit came with a remote control.

Fast forward to 2012, it is now commonplace to own a sleek flat screen TV with universal remote controls that operate a wide range of household technology with the click of a button.

After 26 years repairing equipment on site and via house calls, Audio Video Tech will be closing its doors.

As much as many in the community will miss the personalized service that Donaldson and long-time employees Jim Papp and Jenny Nylund provide it is no longer cost-effective to repair aging equipment as technology advances, and manufacturers mass-produce products with smaller and less expensive parts.

Parts needed for repair are becoming hard to find, and repair shops like Audio Video Tech are no longer viable. When the small business closes its doors this summer, Comox Valley residents may

have to travel as far as Parksville, Nanaimo or Victoria to have their audio video equipment serviced. When items break, consumers will be forced to buy new, or scour garage sales and thrift shops for deals.

Donaldson is nostalgic when he talks about the technology he has worked with over the past 30 years. He recalls the great sound quality of vinyl record players hooked up to home stereo systems in an era where a tweeter

referred to a speaker system capable of high audio frequency and friends connected over coffee instead of Facebook. DVD players and Blu-ray players, once cutting edge, are being pushed aside to make room for Netscape and iTunes. iPads and Kindles have replaced stereos and paperback novels. Yet as much as Donaldson has seen technology change over the years a strong sense

of community has been a mainstay.

“As technology shifts and changes, the friendships and sense of kinship that have been built around this locally-owned and operated business will remain life-long,” Donaldson said.

He adds that staff, dealers and manufacturers he has had the fortune to work with have been the backbone of his business.

In 2011, the Vancouver Island/Coast’s economy continued to wrestle with the effects of the economic recession. Population growth, which has been the engine for much of the region’s economic activity over recent years, was at a 10-year low.

According to the BC Check-Up regional edition, after a partial recovery from losses in 2010, the region’s economy shrank last year and recorded a loss of 16,700 jobs. This decline was the largest single-year employment drop since 2001.

Employment declined throughout the region, but areas outside the Victoria Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were hardest hit, absorbing 92 per cent of job losses.

The majority of Vancouver Island’s job losses occurred in the

service sector, and 85 per cent occurred outside the Victoria CMA. The industries that experienced the largest declines were health care and social assistance, trade, financereal estate services and education, which combined shed 20,500 jobs.

Employment in the goods sector also declined, losing 4,600 jobs. This was despite a favourable increase of 2,400 jobs in the forestry, fisheries, mining, and oil and gas industries.

The largest decline was in construction, where 4,100 jobs were lost due to lower housing demand and a reduction in capital investment.

Job gains posted by the resource sector were due to increases in forest industry production, an offshoot of the growing Asian market

demand for pulp and lumber. This upswing in activity saw the reopening of Western Forest Products’ Ladysmith sawmill, upgrades and increased hiring at Catalyst’s Port Alberni and Powell River pulp and paper mills, as well as additional logging activity and expansion in forestry support industries.

Earlier this year Catalyst undertook action for bankruptcy protection. Recently, the company’s creditors voted in favour of a financial restructuring plan.

The impact of a sluggish economy was reflected in the region’s 2011 capital investment and development activity. According to the BC Major Projects Inventory, four new projects valued at $266 million started construction last year, compared with eight

Canada – we turned out fine Canadians from sea to sea to sea participated in our ongoing attempt at nation building during the weekend.

Canada Day celebrations were everywhere on the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

Like every country, ours is founded on myths.

Some of Canada’s earliest heroes – Laura Secord and Issac Brock – date back to that war, which established that North America would be home to a distinctly British nation as well as an American republic.

In classrooms, Canadians learn to take pride in the defence of our homeland and how our nation was forged by our battles against a much larger army of American invaders.

Like all myths, it can be difficult to determine historic reality from the “messaging” written after the hostilities ended.

Thankfully, the bicentennial of that war has prompted both government and media to dig deeper into the history of the muddied narrative of the War of 1812.

The documentaries and re-enactments will bring the lessons of this conflict to new generations who may know little about the significance of this war.

The books and newspaper features will dig up new information from the archives that will shed more light on how events actually unfolded.

As happens every time we really look at ourselves in the mirror, we will see things we might wish we hadn’t. For as much as our earliest settlers stood nobly against the African slave trade and raids on aboriginal lands, those early Canadians also closed off the country to the spirit of development and innovation that allowed the U.S. to blossom.

After the War of 1812, as both countries went their separate ways, we spent decades as a country that severely restricted many of the rights – such as religious freedom and democratic principles – that are cherished today.

But from that tyranny of conformity emerged a character that would eventually come to be known as among the most tolerant and peaceful in the world: Canada.

Isfeld students just‘fantastic’ Dear editor, I wanted to let you know about three fantastic groups of students I have worked with this past year at Mark R. Isfeld School.

I teach Humanities 8 and 9 and every year I have my students do volunteer work. My Grade 8s were asked to do five hours of community service, however they chose.

I was thrilled this year with the amount of work the students did and the variety of projects they took on. In all, my two classes of Grade 8s did over 300 hours of community service from January to June.

The tasks they took on included facepainting at Car Free Sunday; serving tables at the Grad Dine and Dance; candy-striping at the hospital; knitting scarves for homeless people; serving lunch at the friendship centre for the elders; scorekeeping at Isfeld’s basketball games; music, refereeing and scoring for hockey games; Easter egg hunt in Comox; ecological restoration of a stream; setup and takedown at the Highland Games; Snow to Surf; lakeshore cleanup; donating clothes; helping at the Grade 7 orientation night; helping at grad; MS walk; Can

Skate coach; Isfeld’s dessert night band fundraiser; Ride for Dad; Heart and Stroke; gardening at an elementary school; facepainting at the visitor centre’s grand opening; Seniors Village volunteer; Therapeutic Riding Society; environment club and YANA dinner and auction.

My Grade 9s were asked to research an issue in the world, find a reputable aid agency and do something to help. They had previously read novels about issues in the world facing children including child slavery, AIDS, child prostitution, poverty, and child soldiers.

In all, they raised over $1,100 for a variety of organizations in the world, plus they raised awareness in our school of problems in the world.

The projects they took on included chocolate, coffee and hot chocolate sales for World Community, $200 in sales; raising awareness of child slave labour in cocoa plantations; fundraising for a school in India; students from our school visited an impoverished school in India in the fall and my students wanted to raise money for that school; the girls held bake sales, sold fudgesicles, and did several bottle drives; Quality Foods in Comox donated

$100 to help buy fudgesicles and bake sale ingredients (they raised $499.92); HEAL project fundraiser (they raised $249 by selling goodies at lunch and asking friends and family to donate); they raised awareness of the issue of child soldiers; greening our school grounds; three boys baked cupcakes and sold them at lunch to raise money to buy fruit trees for our school grounds; they raised $76.50 in one lunch hour; Canadian Tire Jump Start (a group of passionate sports fans raised $35.50, by selling freezies at lunch — their money will help kids who can’t afford to participate in sports); Free the Children (two girls baked cookies and sold them at lunch to raise money for Mamas to Mamas, a branch of Free the Children that helps mothers in particular — $69.25 has been sent to Free the Children to buy a goat or materials for a food garden so that a family will have food).

You can see why I am so proud of these students!

Government mandarins have power Dear editor, Let’s have a reality check for the recent frustrating news about executives (bureaucrats) getting additional pay and bonuses.

If in any way people believe that our elected officials (politicians) are pulling the strings and are responsible thus culpable for this fiasco — think again.

We have seen so many recent examples of these mandarins getting obscene pay and benefits; we had better realize to whom the real power belongs.

The real power rests with the government civil servants; the

so-called bureaucrats who run everything.

The politicians simply do as they are told, advised, coerced, influenced, cajoled or eventually brow-beaten.

There exists no elected official who has any will, political or

otherwise, to change the system — it’s not in their interest.

They are simply there for a short time to get their two minutes of fame, outrageous stipend and lucrative pensions!

Warping history wrong, ludicrous Dear editor, In his ‘Praise for Stan Hagen’ (Record, June 22), Brian Scott’s intention appears less to write in praise of Stan Hagen — a worthy gentleman — than to fulminate spitefully while busily burying the NDP. No doubt that party, like all political parties, can stand improvement, including its support for the arts.

But perhaps not to the point of supplying Repeated Replication Recompense, if that be the goal.

Not only is Brian Scott’s contention that the NDP sold the fast ferries for $20 million inaccurate, it is so far wrong as to be ludicrous.

Anyone must surely know by now it was the Campbell Liberals that sold the ferries for a ridiculously low amount, presumably to spite the NDP, disregarding the loss to the B.C. taxpayers.

Anyone must be similarly aware that the same Liberal government — in a move striking me as close to treasonable — paid German shipbuilders $300 million for the current ferries, vessels that could have been as easily built in Vancouver, giving work to hundreds, bringing huge financial benefits to B.C. manufacture and commerce.

Brian Scott ought not to mix ravings with reverence, or art with history.

The latter teaches us differently than he wishes it had been.

He loves those Snowbirds Dear editor, Here’s something that my active brain needs an answer to.

Firstly, let me say that the Snowbird jet on display at the new Visitor Info Centre looks awesome. Full marks and kudos to all who came up with the idea of putting it there.

I drive by the aircraft display at the airport quite often on my way home from work and remember going by one day and noticing the only Snowbird was gone.

I was pleased to learn later

what had happened to it. But, when it was at the airport prior to new paint it was Snowbird No. 3. However, the restored jet at the Info Centre is Snowbird No. 5.

Anyone know why?

Also I am pleased to see that a Labrador helicopter is on display finally at the airport. Incredible workhorse; it helped save a lot of people in distress.

Love the Snowbirds!

Reader no fan of the BCTF Dear editor, So they have finally reached a tentative settlement!

Although my children are long past school age, I have two grandchildren in the B.C. educational system and, therefore, have been following this year’s labour dispute between the BCTF and the government with great interest.

Notwithstanding that the BCTF likes to couch its public relations musings in altruistic terms that everything they are demanding is only for the good of the children, that myth was severely tested when they destroyed the dreams of many of their students by withdrawing any extra-curricular activities this spring.

The BCTF is a labour union and as such its only mandate is to maximize salaries and benefits for its members — no more and no less — all the rest is political spin.

The collective bargaining process, particularly in B.C., is inherently conflict-oriented with labour pitting their power against the employer.

The BCTF has been very successful in maximizing their power simply by holding the students and, therefore, their parents hostage during the school year.

It doesn’t help that they use every avenue to further their propaganda, including indoctrinating their students, our children, in the classroom.

The government, however, must reconcile increased costs in the education sector with other priorities whether they be health care, environment or welfare, to those less advantaged, while attempting to stay within the framework of a balanced budget during trying economic conditions.

I find the timing of the settlement more than coincidental as it corresponds with the end of the school year. After all, there will be no children to hold hostage over the next two months, and heaven forbid, nothing can interfere with the teachers’ right to enjoy their twomonth vacation.

We completely agree with you, it is very frustrating watching people’s cats use the gardens as a washroom and killing the lovely birds that we all take the time to feed. Our immediate reaction is to scat the cat out of the yard but in the end it is not the cat that should be ran out it is the owner who needs to be taught how to be held accountable for their dear pets. True responsible pet owners don’t let their animals wander from yard to yard. We have cats and have built outdoor enclosures for them to safely enjoy their day, bothering no one and we watch them closely when we choose to let them out to soak up the freedom of the outdoors, they are happy cats so it can be done and it is our responsibility as a pet owner to do so. This message is not intended for everyone as there are many responsible pet owners out there, but may it be a small reminder to those who need it to please take the time to watch where your outdoor kitty is going when you mindlessly open the door each day/night to let kitty come and go. Cats need to be regulated and their owners need to become much more accountable for them.

Forget bicycle lanes Dear editor, Re: cycling lanes.

Instead of wasting money on cycling lanes on streets that were not designed for these lanes, use the money to continue the darn sidewalks on some of the main arteries — such as Fitzgerald South, 26th St., Willemar Avenue — that only have partial sidewalks on either side of the street.

It’s getting to be a huge burden on taxpayers just to keep catering to cyclists (i.e. elaborate covered bridges and these new special lanes).

Rough seas ahead for BC Ferries as riders dwindle VICTORIA — BC Ferries has begun its summer schedule, ramping up sailings for the vacation season that is crucial to the fleet’s bottom line.

It’s been rough sailing for BC Ferries so far this year.

The corporation released its financial results in June, reporting a net loss of $16.5 million, compared to net earnings of $3.8 million the previous year. Last year’s earnings were boosted by the sale of the former corporate headquarters for $9.3 million, preventing a loss there as well.

In the fiscal year that ended March 31, vehicle traffic was down 3.5 per cent and walk-on passengers were down 2.8 per cent.

As a result, BC Ferries is forecasting a “small loss” for this year as well.

The spring Coast Saver sale has just ended.

That’s a 37-per-cent discount offered Fridays through Mondays, May 25 to June 25 on the major runs from the mainland to Victoria and Nanaimo. The discounts allowed a foot passenger to cross for $9.95 and a car and driver for $39.95.

I asked BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan last week how the sale went. He didn’t have final figures yet, but he allowed that the boost in traffic was “marginal.”

One of the primary reasons for this spring’s poor performance is the lousy weather that kept people at home.

Gasoline at $1.40 a litre is another big one.

Hotels and other tourism services tell the same story.

Here’s another problem: Student traffic on the ferries was down by a third this spring, because teachers cancelled field trips as part of their lengthy workto-rule campaign.

The simplistic political debate about ferry service starts and ends with rising fares, with occasional fits of temper over executive salaries, and ignores the other factors.

Just cut the fares and increase the taxpayer subsidy, say the NDP and their local echo chambers.

Of course, taxpayers are already pitching in an extra $80 million this year, bringing the subsidy to the ferries close to $200 million.

That’s how Transportation Minister Blair

Lekstrom sweetened the pot as he unveiled new powers for B.C. Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee to set service levels as well as regulate fares.

Macatee’s task now is

to travel the coast and endure the demands of island dwellers who want the rest of us to subsidize their splendid isolation.

The proposition for them will boil down to

FortisBC has offered an $11 million

incentive for conversion of marine vessels to natural gas, which would give the fleet significant relief from spiraling fuel costs.

or more, and another vessel would be needed in the meantime.
