Police issue warning on break-ins It only takes a little time to lose a lot A break-in to a home in Parksville prompted a warning to residents from police. Corporal Jesse Foreman said the incident took place on June 25 at 2:15 p.m. while the homeowner was walking the family dog. The unidentified suspect used the time to quickly enter the home and grab whatever was easily available before fleeing the scene. The incident stands as a warning to others about just how quickly a thief can strike. “Unfortunately there will always be opportunistic criminals who are just waiting for an unlocked door or window,” Foreman said. “In the summer months people have a tendency to leave doors and windows open to allow for ventilation. It is also important to not let your guard slip when you are gardening or mowing your grass.” Indeed, he said you don’t even have to be out of the house for a quick-witted culprit to take advantage of the situation if a door is left unlocked. “If you are in your back yard, who’s in the front yard?” he said. Not only the front door should be secured, he noted. Other points of access, including windows, need to be checked before leaving the house — even for what seems to be an inconsequential period of time. “Please be aware that screen doors and open windows are common entry points for thieves. Regardless of the time or your whereabouts, please lock out the thieves this summer, Foreman said.” — News staff

School District 69 (Qualicum) is set to receive $75,000 to repair and enhance playgrounds at Winchelsea and Parksville Elementary schools. “It was a very pleasant surprise,” said secretary treasurer Bernice Hannam. “Several months ago they asked us for an inventory of our playground needs,” she said, and though she doesn’t know anything about their process, “they decided we’re in need.” The provincial government is spending a total of $3.3 million to upgrade playgrounds at 80 schools in 60 school districts across the province as the final step in a two-year program benefiting 227 schools. The funds are earmarked as $25,000 for repairs to the existing Parksville Elementary play-
ground and $50,000 to replacing and enhancing equipment at Winchelsea, which Hannam pointed out is an old, out of date wooden one. Playgrounds are typically funded by parents’ groups, Hannam said, so this is a big benefit to the hard work and fundraising efforts of parents in the district. School District 69 didn’t receive any of the earlier funds from the $8 million provincial program, which included reimbursing several parent advisory councils for the purchase of equipment. “With the final phase of this $8 million investment, our playground funding program has supported new and improved playgrounds at 227 schools across the province,” Minister of Education George Abbott said in a news release.

Hope for our biosphere Parksville mayor stresses the importance of keeping the biosphere alive and vibrant for the future

While the Regional District of Nanaimo awaits a report on taking over governance, Parksville mayor Chris Burger is stressing the importance of keeping the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve. “The biosphere designation separates us from everyone else in the province and we have a tremendous opportunity to promote it at an international level,” said Burger who also serves as the council liaison with the biosphere foundation. The reserve, formed in 2000, is one of over 500 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) designated sites in the world, but one of only two in B.C. It has struggled with governance issues for years and failed a periodic review in 2010 for “not meeting the statutory framework criteria.” The board was given two years to enact an overall strategy and action plan or

face losing the UN designation — which would be a first in Canada. In response the biosphere board sent a formal request to the RDN in May to have them take over governance. Burger said aside from losing the tremendous educational and promotional benefits of the designation it would be the “height of irony because the regional district is already undertaking a number
of projects and is really on the leading edge.” He highlights aspects such as the district’s nationally noted 70 per cent waste diversion from landfills, the drinking water protection area, the aquifer storage and recovery project being studied that would be among the first in the country, and the bio-energy facility in Nanaimo.
“We’re doing a lot of this stuff already, the regional district is known to be progressive, we just haven’t promoted it enough.” Asked if it was an issue of the average resident getting more involved, Burger pointed out all the residents already are, through things like the reduction in landfill waste. RDN staff will not comment on the issue until their report on governance options is presented to the RDN board, but Burger points out it would be an ideal solution in many ways. He said since local governments are experts in governance and can set up structures that avoid the pitfalls of politics, environmental issues and advocacy the biosphere board got caught up in, against their mandate. Burger said taking over the governance would only cost the RDN some extra staff time since they are doing a lot of that work already.

There was little feedback from the gallery during the open house portion of the Parksville council meeting on an apartment development on Dogwood Street. One gallery member had several very specific questions and proposals including preferring two taller buildings with a view corridor between them. Another describing himself as a neighbour said if they change the zoning on that property, it should apply to the whole block, thinking of his future property value he said. The public hearing portion was held on two aspects — amending the official community plan and a re-zoning application from single and medium family residential (there are three properties) to a new comprehensive development zone. The staff report points out
it is a logical spot for densification, close to downtown, which appears to have been overlooked in previous OCP planning. “A multifamily residential development at this location would contribute to the overall OCP goals of developing a compact, easily walkable and sustainable community. As well, the inclusion of affordable housing units is consistent with the affordable housing provisions of the plan,” the report says. The proposed four story building would be on three currently treed residential lots beside the Dogwood Apartments, across from the Quality Resort Bayside. There would be 15 onebedroom and 15 two-bedroom units including four townhouse-style units on the ground floor with their own garages and street access and six affordable units. Under the city’s afford-
able housing bylaw they must meet the housing needs of a household with 80 per cent of the median Parksville income, meaning it would require a current maximum rent of $965 per month. They would be affordable units for a minimum 15 years and would be exempt from Development Cost Charges, around $85,000 worth in this case. The proponents had offered $10,000 towards a traffic signal at Highway 19A, but since there are no plans to do that and signals are being considered at other nearby streets, they instead plan extra sidewalk work including 95m across the property plus 60m to the highway. The project will return to council for three readings each on the requirement to combining the three lots, rezone, relax the 11 metre height to 13.26 metres and decrease parking from 45 to 38 spaces.

Why not take a hero holiday?
S
itting on the beach while reading a good book or breaking out the suntan lotion and baking for a bit is always a good way to spend a couple of hours on a hot summer’s day. Its entertainment value only goes so far however and when you go back to work and people ask you about your holiday, the best you’ll likely come up with is something in the order of ‘oh, it was nice.’ There is however at least one other option that also involves sun, sand and surf that will provide stories to tell your co-workers — who will all want to hear about it — and maybe the grandchildren a few years or decades down the road. There’s nothing like feeling you’ve accomplished something meaningful, something worthwhile on your time off, particularly if it means working shoulder to shoulder with other like-minded and publicspirited individuals. Nothing builds community like shared activity, after all. So why not consider taking a version of what some call a hero’s holiday? No, we’re not talking about going overseas to help people in underdeveloped countries here. We’re talking about doing some good right here in B.C., maybe even on Vancouver Island. Even as we speak, a raft of Japanese tsunami debris is headed this way. A whole swack of it has already grounded in Haida Gwai, choking those pristine beaches with plastic, wood and other debris. Although officials in Washington State and Oregon have begun to mobilize to meet the threat, our B.C. government seems to be less than alarmed at the prospect of our beautiful coastline being swamped with garbage. When governments fail in this manner, sometimes it comes down to ordinary citizens to take up the garbage bag and the tongs, drive out to the west coast and get to work. Taking personal responsibility for our beaches isn’t new. Volunteers did it in 1989 when Long Beach was fouled with oil. We can do it again now. — editorial by Neil Horner

Letters HELP THE HOMELESS I am concerned about the unfortunate in our area. They are apparently invisible to most people. Robin Campbell of Mana Ministries, who has continued to be involved in helping the homeless has just recently had equipment stolen from his van and is in great need to replace many items. During the warmer months two and three-man tents are needed. I have found that you can get two-person tens for $20 and three person tents for around $28 which includes HST. If anyone can donate used or new tents or funds, please contact the numbers listed below. Approximately 60 or more tents are needed. Thank you. PAT ADAM Parksville
BEEF WITH THE BENCH About 10 years ago, my husband had a bench installed on the seawall in Qualicum Beach as a birthday surprise for me in memory of my parents. On the original deed it states that he purchased it for $350 and that the town would maintain it. A short while ago, we received a letter from the town stating that we owed them $1,800 and if this was not paid in the timeframe allotted, our plaque would be removed and sent back to us and the bench would be freed for someone else’s dedication. We were also informed that every eight years we would be billed again to renew our dedication.

My husband paid them their $1,800 out of respect to me and to my parents and because we sit there every morning and we don’t want someone else’s name on the bench. We have talked to other people who have made dedications of different sorts and have paid a one-time fee for a lasting memorial. We were fortunate that we could pay this amount but we are concerned that there will be seniors on fixed incomes who have dedicated a bench to a beloved spouse or family member they have lost, who would find it a problem to come up with this amount. Who knows what it will be in another eight years? These dedications are a highly personal and sentimental undertaking and we feel the town is playing with people’s emotions and taking advantage of them simply to make money. SHAME ON SHUTTLE Just want to express my disappointment that the Town of Qualicum Beach is not running the ‘Shop to Shore’ shuttle this year. When I phoned the Chamber of Commerce, they said they did not know if it was running this year, as the decision was up to the town. I phoned the Town and they said no shuttle this year. MP IS AWFULLY QUIET On Monday, June 4, groups across Canada shut down their web sites in protest against Bill C-38. Yet we have heard nothing from our MP, Mr. James Lunney, on the subject. Even more disappointing, neither of our local governments have asked Mr. Lunney to report to them why his government feels it is necessary to pillory charities, gut environmental legislation, shut down essential scientific research stations, muzzle their own scientists and neuter fisheries and waterways legislation. The father of the couch potato
H
ow long have we had TV remotes to play with? Ten years, you figure? Twenty, maybe? You’re ‘way off. TV browsers were around before most of the people reading this column were born. Before man walked on the moon. Before the Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup, even. We’re talking Mesozoic here. The TV remote has been around since 1955 when a Chicago inventor named Eugene Polley invented it. Polley’s prototype wasn’t exactly the sleek plastic pellet with eleven dozen buttons that we’re used to losing in the couch pillows nowadays. His invention looked like a ray gun from Sci Fi special effects. It had a pistolgrip handle and a trigger and it was called the Zenith Flash-Matic. It wasn’t pretty, but it did the job. Well … sort of. Polley’s ray gun worked a bit like a flashlight. The viewer pointed it at one of the four cor-

ners of the TV screen and pulled the trigger. The top left-hand corner of the screen contained a photo cell that would turn the TV on and off. You aimed at the top right hand corner if you wanted to go to the next channel; the bottom left-hand corner if you wanted to go back to a previous channel; and the bottom right hand corner if you wanted to mute out what Polley called “those noisy TV commercials.” Or perhaps I’ve mixed up the corners. A lot of viewers did, which was one big complaint about the Flash-Matic. Another was the fact that the TV photo cells frequently reacted with ordinary sunlight to change channels, go on and off, or mess with the volume, all on their own.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was revolutionary. Eugene Polley modestly suggested his invention was “the most important invention since the wheel.” Well, hardly — but it was a major influence on television productions and the way we watch the box. Before Polley’s Flash-Matic, viewers who wanted to adjust the volume or change the channel were forced to put their feet on the floor, levitate to a vertical position, walk across the room and interact with the TV manually. Humans, being the lethargic creatures we are, often elected to put up with whatever drivel was emanating from the screen, rather than, you know, actually get off our lard butts and move. The result was some astonishingly mediocre television fare (anyone remember the Arthur Godfrey show?) Eugene Polley’s Flash-Matic changed that. It allowed viewers to be discriminating AND lazy. We swiftly developed into a species
with the attention span of a fruit fly. Horatio flapping his gums on CSI Miami? Zap it in favour of the Nature Channel. Oops, a ‘pollution special’ – bo-ring! ZAP! Check ESPN. Uh-oh – Jeep commercial. ZAP. The Flash-Matic is no longer with us, but its heirs and successors are. Back in its day Flash-Matic had to contend with no more than 12 channels, maximum. Today’s browsers navigate a universe of hundreds of channels, not to mention computer games, the Internet and our personal music library. No need to get off the couch at all, really. We hardly need our legs anymore. Perhaps over the next millennia or two our DNA will morph and mutate so that those massive, now useless thigh and calf muscles get diverted to where they’d really be of use — in our thumbs. Eugene Polley won’t be there to see it. He died last month at the age of 96, still convinced that he’d made a seminal con-

It’s summer theatre Island style and Bard to Broadway (B2B) is offering two shows throughout the summer season on the stage of the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach July 9 to August 18. The repertory theatre company kicks off it’s 13th season with two sensational shows; the smash hit Broadway musical Hello Dolly and Becky’s New Car. Hello Dolly has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success since it was first produced in 1964. Becky’s New Car is a thoroughly original comedy by Steven Dietz with serious overtones, a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken and stars Candice Appleby as Becky Foster. Becky is caught in middle age, middle management and a middling marriage with no prospects for change on the horizon. She has a good job, a decent home, a regular Joe for a husband and a son whose life revolves around graduate study in psychology and girls. Working late one night, the millionaire widower Walter Flood — still in mourning and totally inept without his late
wife to guide him walks into the car dealership where Becky is employed. A new vista presents itself and Becky finds herself facing a fork in the road of her life. The great philosopher Yogi Berra once said: “When you come to a fork in the road — take it.” Amid a variety of twists and turns involving both hilarious and touching events, that’s just what Becky does. Appleby said her character Becky is offered nothing short of a new life and the audience is offered a chance to ride shotgun in a way that most plays wouldn’t dare. “Becky is a comedy about a woman in a mid life crisis. She takes her husband and family and workmates along for the ride,” Appleby explained. She admitted there is a great cast of characters and they have been having a blast at rehearsals. “There are a lot of layers in the play and we have had some very good laughs.” Appleby who has been very active in the local community theatre scene has been stage managing with Echo Players as well as Vancouver Island Opera and B2B, but this year she decided that her acting needed to get off of the back burner. An enchanting class, complete with all the magic and wonder of faeries, is being offered at The Old School House arts centre (TOSH), starting on July 9. The week-long Faerie Making Class, was headed by Tammie Hunter last year and her daughters Sara and Victoria. Now Tammie has handed the responsibility over to both of the girls. The pair participated the class and volunteered in it for many years when it was run by artist Vivien Frow. “It’s a really fun thing to do,” agreed Sara. “You set your mind to it, start doing it, and you can make tons of little faeries.” Victoria said the different kinds of faeries that can be made are endless including hair-tie faeries, faerie doorways, twist tie faeries and cloth doll faeries. The sisters are both very crafty, thanks to their mother Tammie they said. Faerie making is especially fun, Sara said, because of all the colours and materials you can choose from. Some of the supplies include pipe cleaners, artificial flowers, hair bands, glitter glue, sequins, ribbon and more. The dolls can also be painted a variety of colours. The classes are designed for those six aged and up and run from July 9 to July 13 at TOSH from 9:30 a.m. to noon daily. The cost is $75 and $20 for supplies. To book call TOSH at 250-7526133.

Dwyer rocks Vancouver with jazz

With music festival season upon us there is no shortage of great performances to be had and Qualicum Beach jazz legend Phil Dwyer proved once again why he is in such demand and is booked at some of the summer’s biggest music events throughout the country. His summer tour kicked off with a performance in Vancouver at the annual TD International Jazz Festival on June 24. The multi Juno award winning musician was among a line-up of established greats and upand-coming stars who performed at venues throughout the city over 10 days. Dwyer and his band a sextet hand-picked from the west coast jazz scene performed on an outdoor stage in front of the art gallery. The group played music from Dwyer’s CBC Radio 2 commissioned Canadian Songbook Project. The tight set included the music of Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who and Ian Tyson among others and needless to say the crowd was appreciative of the beautifully expansive contemporary jazz. After the show fans lined up to get CD’s singed by the saxophonist/arranger. Dwyer’s show was one of the many free venues scattered around the Robson Square/Vancouver Art Gallery blocks. The festival’s four downtown outdoor stages saw a parade of incredible talent. I enjoyed two days of jazz and blues, only a slice of the more than 1,800 musicians and 300 concerts.

The festival spanned every musical style and many of the acts really don’t ďŹ t into the conventional categorization of jazz. A highlight was the Avett Brothers concert at the Orpheum June 26. The spectacular show by the rowdy but sensitive brothers from North Carolina was a masterpiece and proved why fans just can’t get enough of their stunning songwriting and performing. Their show included countriďŹ ed boogie, acoustic roots-based music as well as powerful grunge-era rock. The siblings draw on a wide range of inuences and inspirations‌ folk, punk, honky tonk, bluegrass, country, ragtime, jazz and blues. Highlighted by fraternal harmonies including I and Love and You, and foot stomping punkgrass the concert handily makes this reporters top ten list.

“I decided to go back to my acting roots and audition for a part and lo and behold I got the lead,â€? she confessed. Appleby said she is thoroughly enjoying the process of doing a comedy. “There is a lot of effort expended in the process ‌ but the process is enriching and the performance is the icing on the cake,â€? she acknowledged. Director Don Harper revealed there is a fantastic story behind the play. He said in 2006 Charles Staadecker of Seattle had the idea of commissioning a play for his wife Benita’s 60th birthday. He brought the idea to the ACT Theatre company and they loved the idea and longed for a commissioning program for quite some time. ACT wanted a well known playwright to kick off the program and asked Steven Dietz to do it. The only caveat was that Staadecker asked that the play not be dark. The rest is history and the Staadeckers have attended 24 productions of Becky’s New Car across the United States. Harper said Staadecker is so thrilled that the B2B Theatre Society is producing the play at the Village Theatre that he sent them an e-mail
wishing them all the best of luck in their season. In the letter, Staadecker pointed out that there are now 19 other couples or groups who have commissioned plays and they are having the time of their life. “We have learned so much about your profession and had no idea a play could be interpreted in so many variations ... each with its own insights and character,â€? said Staadecker in his letter to Harper, and added, “We are thrilled Becky is being produced at your theatre ‌ it will bring much laughter and tears.â€? Performances are at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Ballenas Secondary School (BSS) graduate Kyle Wamer is modest when asked about the many scholarships he recently received and will use towards his post secondary studies in math and physics. Instead he wants to shed some light on a topic he and some fellow students are passionate about. In the fall of 2011, the students founded the Civics Action Group at BSS. Their mandate is simple: to provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge of political, global, local and environmental issues and
to help youth actively become involved in their community. They have given environmental presentations to elementary school classes and have enhanced the Ballenas recycling program. Their most recent project is the revitalization of Nicholls Park in Parksville. According to Wamer John Leonard Nicholls served the Oceanside area for many years with true community dedication and enthusiasm. He was a longtime teacher and administrator as well as serving in many different local organizations. Ten years after his retirement, the City of

Parksville dedicated the park located on Pym Street to Nicholls. However according to Wamer the park as it stands today offers little to local residents and he said their youth group want to see the Park returned to a state befitting the memory of John Nicholls, and made into an enjoyable space for the community once more. Wamer exclaimed they just want to make a difference.
“The name of youth in Parksville really isn’t that strong. Our image isn’t that good and we want to not only revitalize the park… but revitalize the image of youth in Parksville,” confessed Wamer. He said over the past month they have conducted a survey of local residents, to discover the amount of support for the project, and to find out what local residents would like to see have happen with the park.
Having gathered the information, the group is beginning to start work on the next phase of the park revitalization. Wamer said its success depends upon the support the Oceanside community gives it. They have already met with the Parksville Lions Club, as well as the Rotary Club of Parksville AM and the Kiwanis Club of Parksville and Qualicum.. Recently, they met with Parksville Mayor Chris Burger and he strongly supported their vision. The group is now scheduled to speak as a delegation in front of Parksville City Council on July 4 at 6:30 p.m. Wamer admitted the Nicholls Parks project presents a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to engage with the local community, and work with youth, to improve Parksville.

Tourism grants gained PARKSVILLE — Tourism is hurting across the province, but the provincial government this week extended a helping hand. That hand came in the form of an announcement that the Oceanside Tourism Association is eligible to receive $23,000 for projects that help grow tourism in the region. The funding comes from the provincial government’s Community Tourism Opportunities (CTO) program, administered by regional destination marketing organizations. fter 30 years in School District 69 (Qualicum), Steve Hamilton is outward bound. Nanoose Bay Elementary’s principal for the last seven years, Hamilton retired last weekend and by the time you read this, will be off on new adventures, starting with sailing in Haida Gwaii. While he said he’ll miss the school, he’s excited about a number of plans including helping guide a kayak trip in Johnstone Strait. Hamilton said he has a group of “good friends who are already retired and are waiting for me to retire and so I can go play with them.” He’s had many great wilderness adventures, having worked with Outward Bound, guiding trips to spectacular locations, and he’s done many other great trips including a family paddle up the coast in a special three person kayak when his children were five and nine. “I was basically the engine, but it was an incredibly meaningful experience,” he said of moments like paddling through a pod of 11 friendly orcas. He hopes to continue some of those adventures with his grown children and their kids. Hamilton worked at many schools in the district including as principal of Winchelsea Elementary and as a teacher and counsellor at French Creek Elementary and ten years on Lasqueti at the two room False Bay Elementary. His Lasqueti class covered four grades, meaning he spent a lot of

time with the students and developed meaningful long term relationships that continue to this day. “It was a relationship rich, very intense experience,” he said pointing out he’s guiding the the Johnstone Strait trip with a former student. While he didn’t get as much time with students in Nanoose, he couldn’t say enough good things about his 14 years there.
“There’s such a feeling of gratitude, it’s an amazing place to work, from the PAC (parent advisory council), the staff and children, it’s incredibly supportive and there’s a real feeling of community.” “It’s the type of place you dream of as a school leader, such a feeling of celebration and accomplishment,” he summed up. As Hamilton leaves, he’s confident he’s leaving the school in good hands with new principal Jessica Antosz, formerly vice-principal of Oceanside Middle School.

Duncan Centennial Totem Pole Project Request for Proposals Duncan Tourism Totem Sub-Committee/ Duncan Business Improvement Area Society The City of Duncan Tourism Totem Sub-Committee (City) and the Duncan Business Improvement Area Society (DBIAS) would like to commission a commemorative totem pole to celebrate Duncan’s centennial year. Master Artists with experience carving totem poles are encouraged to submit a proposal that meets the criteria laid out in this Request for Proposals. Design Details, SpeciďŹ cations, and Deadlines: Design: Preference is for the Artist to incorporate Coast Salish aspects into the cedar carving. The story depicted will commemorate the 100 year history of the City of Duncan. Log Dimensions and Criteria: The cedar log measurements are to be minimally 30 ft. in length, 2 ft. in diameter at top, and 3 ft. at bottom. The log must be of exceptional quality. Model Totem Poles (maquettes): The applicant selected to carve the Totem Pole must carve and paint to scale, two 18 inch tall yellow cedar totem poles. The maquettes must be completed prior to beginning the carving of the 30 ft. pole. These will serve as models for the actual pole. Completion Date: The two 18 inch tall totem pole maquettes must be completed by October 1, 2012. A penalty up to 10% may be imposed upon failure to meet requirements and deadlines outlined in the RFP and the contract. A realistic timeline for completion of the 30 ft. totem pole must be included with the proposal. Minor baseball ump aims for majors

“Well, one thing for sure, we’ve got a good ump working this game,” Oceanside Minor Baseball prez Mike Parlow said off the cuff last Saturday as the players took the infield up at Springwood Old for warm-up prior to the start of the Peewee house league championship final. “She was our umpire of the year last year,” he said, pointing to Chloe Elston. “And near as I can tell between us and softball she must umpire pretty much every day.” As promised, Elston was as fair as she was unflappable behind home plate that game. “When we presented the award to her (last year) I mentioned then it was the first time I can recall ever hearing three different people compliment an umpire — I mean it’s almost unheard of to hear someone complimenting an ump... to get one is rare, but to get three from three different people over the course of the year is ridiculous.” Baseball may be a male dominated sport, but it’s clear Elston wears the pants come game time — she was also voted the North Island senior umpire of the year for 2011 over her male counterparts, and was nominated for the Islands. “She’s umpiring midget games with guys two years older than her and holding her own out there,” chuckled Parlow. Her passion for the game is evident, and with it comes a quiet confidence. “It really doesn’t matter,” Elston answered quickly when asked about those instances when she’s being challenged, and for those who know the game, even at this level, know that umps have to have thick skin. “As long as you’re calm and stick to your calls and know what you’re doing... the umpire controls the

game, they don’t, so... when there is a close call, when coaches approach me, I know my call is correct and I know what I’m talking about.” Asked her take on the lone female in her lineup, OMB umpire coordinator Sheila Williams had great things to say about Elston, who is heading into her senior year at Ballenas Secondary School. “Chloe is our only female umpire out of the 22 youth umpires on the roster for Oceanside Minor Baseball. She has shown herself to be an exceptional and confident umpire,” said Williams, explaining Elston “is knowledgeable in the rules of baseball and consistently calls a fair, clean game. Chloe is an exemplary umpire and role model for present and future umpires of all ages. She umpires all levels of baseball, from mosquito to midget.” See WELL ROUNDED, page A43

Contacted in Richmond, BC Baseball Umpires Association secretary and long-time instructor George Smith shed some light on umps in this province. “I don’t have the exact numbers right now but last year we had 1,346 registered umpires, and of those 34 were female (three of those National Level 4). Worth noting is that the majority of those 34 female umps work women’s softball. “Baseball doesn’t attract women as much,” said Smith, then pointed out “that said, we’ve got national women umpires. We’re one of the few provinces that have a women’s

umpiring program, and we have three national level women umpires in baseball.” Kelly Hunter out of Kelowna, he said for example, has done Olympic softball, and is a nationally rated ump that also worked the 2010 Women’s
Baseball World Cup held in Venezuela. So while the majority of umps remain male, “we don’t see too much difference between the two,” he said, adding “I do a lot of the training as well, and through the clinics I’ve done I can tell you there’s some really good ones out there — just like there’s some really good male umpires, there’s some really good females as well, and from what I’ve seen, there’s an equal acceptance from the teams for males and female umpires — it doesn’t seem to be an issue.” The BCBUA’s vice president he points out is Rhonda Pauls who is a national level umpire as well.

“I watch major league baseball all the time — I watch the umpires on TV, and I thought it would be a fun thing to do, so I thought I’d try it, and I really, really enjoy it.” “Being around the game, I’ve had bad umpires before, so I wanted to be a good one. I wanted people to want me umping their game. “I think just having a good eye and knowing the rules are the two main things, and keep-
ing your composure,” she said with a maturity beyond her years about the keys to umping a good game. “I’m going to do it as long as I can,” Elston said without hesitation when asked where she sees herself going with it, then paused and made the point, “I’d love to be the first woman umpire in the major leagues. That’s a lot of work to get there, but I mean someone’s gotta do it, right, so why not me?”

In action at the Classic June 7-10, the Islanders lost their opener 3-1 to Saskatchewan but bounced back with three straight lopsided wins — clobbering Calgary 8-1, Manitoba 6-0 and the Alberta Extreme 8-0. The Islanders mauled Manitoba 6-1 in the semifinal, which set the table for a rematch against the host stubble-jumpers in the final. According to Jodi, after three hard-fought periods, the two teams were deadlocked at a 1-1 score, and it took two intense overtime periods before the Islanders found the back of the net to secure the team their second gold medal in tournament play in a month. “I think the thing with these girls is they really wanted to play,” Elite head coach Jay Barner
told The News when we caught up with him, pointing out “they worked really hard. We had about 35 hours of practice time before the tournaments. “They played hard, they all contributed — I think every girl on the team got on the score sheet,” said their coach. “It’s quite a thrill to watch these girls play hockey.” “They were all basically hand-picked,” he said of the high performance team, and made the point “they’re fantastic girls to work with and the parents as well, which made it even better. It was just a pleasure to go to the rink.” The team held its windup party last Sunday. Much of the team will stay together and form a first-year Bantam team next year.
