Top city staff see pay hikes Several managers received increases of 15-20 per cent

Senior staff at city hall received some substantial pay hikes in 2011. Last week the city released its financial statements, listing all employees making more than $75,000 annually. Many of the top earners received increases, some as high as 20 per cent, from the previous year. According to city manager Frank Pizzuto, there are two main factors that impact the salary of non-union staff, including an economic increase. Pizzuto said if Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) staff receive a three per cent increase, generally exempt staff get the same. The other wage influence is compensation. “We had a compensation specialist come in, as most organizations do.” The specialist compares the salaries across municipalities and “assigns each position a salary range.” Pizzuoto said the city aimed for a 50 percentile, meaning about half of municipalities pay higher and half lower. In 2011, the largest income increase went to Mike Pastro, manager of the Abbotsford Airport. He went from yearend earnings of $138,486 to $166,344 – an increase of 20 per cent. In 2010, he saw an increase of two per cent. Other increases included Jay
Teichroeb, general manager of economic development and planning, and Mark Taylor, general manager of parks, recreation and culture, who both received 15 per cent more. In 2010, Teichroeb’s and Taylor’s earnings went up seven per cent and two per cent, respectively. Teichroeb earned $192,148 in 2011 while Taylor received $185,279. Jim Gordon, general manager of engineering and utilities, received 14 per cent more (to $200,129) compared to two per cent in 2010. Pizzuto, the city’s highest paid employee, earned $249,005 in 2011 – approximately a 9.75 per cent increase in income from 2010. That year, he had an increase of 7.5 per cent. Abbotsford council does not approve individual staff income levels, other than Pizzuto’s. “Council approves the range, then we decide where people go within the range,” said Pizzuto. “You will find next year that most general managers are at their maximum so next year they will get no increase.” Pizzuto noted that the higner incomes were not all based on salary upgrades. Other factors can impact overall earnings, including the option to cash out up to two weeks of holidays. In the case of fire department staff, overtime can also play a part in the increase. Pizzuto also said some employees saw
an income change because their job titles and duties changed. Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation said rising pay for city workers is not just an Abbotsford issue, although he classified the city’s increases in the high range. Based on information he has received, Bateman said, with the exception of Penticton, all B.C. municipalities have seen significant increases. “Nanaimo is having a major issue right now,” he said. On the other end of the scale, Penticton saw its list of employees making $75,000 or higher drop this year. (Abbotsford’s went up, from 178 in 2010 to 211 in 2011.) Bateman said a core services review took place in Penticton, revealing areas where savings could be realized. “There are a lot of mayors looking at what Penticton’s doing to see if it’s something they can do in their own communities.” Abbotsford is also planning to perform a core service review in the coming months. “Given Abbotsford’s continuing battle with tax increases, I don’t know if many people in Abbotsford feel they’re getting great value for their property tax dollars. “You can find 1,000 excuses to give employees money. The bottom line is it’s still money coming out of taxpayers’ pockets,” Bateman said.

Festivities there included main-stage entertainment, an international food fair, dog flyball demonstrations, community displays, roving circus performers and more. The celebrations concluded with a fireworks display sponsored by the Calgary Flames, the parent organization of the Abbotsford Heat hockey team.

The risk of Fraser River flooding in the Abbotsford area has diminished following a previous evacuation order – later downgraded to an alert – for some residents of Glen Valley and Matsqui Prairie. The BC River Forecast Centre ended its “high streamflow advisory� yesterday (Monday), saying flows from the lower Fraser River are dropping and are expected to continue to recede through the week, as snowmelts decline. The centre reported that the river level at the Mission bridge (above) had dropped to 5.97 metres yesterday. The evacuation order was issued when the level reached 6.27 metres and was expected to hit 6.75, which did not occur.

Valley man murdered in Prince George

A man who was murdered in Prince George on June 23 had a criminal history mainly based in Mission and Abbotsford. Jordan Christian Reno, 22, was found dead on a property in the 4100 block of Knight Crescent in Prince George. An autopsy performed on June 26 determined the cause of death, which has not been released, and the matter was deemed a homicide. Prince George RCMP said they believe this was a targeted incident, but would release no further details. The provincial court database indicates that Reno has a list of charges and convictions in Abbotsford and Mission from 2008 to 2011, as well as files from Fort St. John in 2009. He also appeared to have strong social connections in the Fraser Valley. Many of his “friends� listed on his Facebook profile are from Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack. Reno’s convictions in
Jordan Reno, 22, had criminal convictions involving Abbotsford and Mission. Mission run from 2008 to 2010 and include theft, break-andenter, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and numerous breaches of his parole and bail conditions.
He was also convicted in January 2011 of a break-in in Abbotsford. Reno’s other convictions – break-and-enter, resisting arrest and breaching his bail – occurred in Fort St. John in October 2009. Most recently, Reno was in prison in Prince George, awaiting trial along with four other men in relation to the assault of 24 people at a beach party in the summer of 2010. Each of the men received 40 charges, including pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and assault causing bodily harm. Among the weapons they were accused of using were a handgun, baseball bats and two-by-fours. Four of the men were acquitted, including Reno, who was released from jail in May. A mistrial was declared for the fifth man. Anyone with information about Reno or his murder is asked to call the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

A pair of crashes in Abbotsford last Wednesday resulted in serious injuries to two people. The first took place at about 4 p.m. on Fraser Highway between Ross and Mt. Lehman roads. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said a 29-year-old Surrey man driving a Honda Accord was travelling west when he either attempted to pass another car or somehow lost control of his vehicle. The car then crossed the eastbound lanes of traffic and went down a 30-foot embankment, flipping at least twice. Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver, who was the lone occupant of the car. He was airlifted to hospital in critical condition, but MacDonald said his condition had improved the following day. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

That portion of Fraser Highway was shut down for several hours while investigators were on the scene. The second crash took place just after 10 p.m., when a 50-year-old Abbotsford man on a 1979 Harley-Davidson had stopped for a red light at the intersection of Gladwin Road and George Ferguson Way. He was then rear-ended by a 2004 Audi GT driven by a 33-year-old woman. The impact launched him from his motorcycle, and he was airlifted to hospital. MacDonald said the condition of the man, who suffered no fractures, later proved to be less serious than was thought at the scene. He said depending on what investigators determine, the driver of the Audi could face charges.

A large crowd of art lovers and community supporters came to the Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford on Thursday night to celebrate the opening of five new exhibits. Among the new shows is a tribute to the 90th anniversary of the Abbotsford News Entitled Making News, Making History, the display captures moments of the community’s history over the past near-decade, covered by The News. “It’s truly an honour to be part of this event,” said Andrew Franklin, publisher of the Abbotsford News. “The Abbotsford News has played an important role in recording the history of this community. If it mattered to the people of Abbotsford, they read about it in our pages.” The Reach will also be hosting a gala banquet on Sept. 8 to close out the 90th anniversary celebrations on a high note. Also opening Thursday night was Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait, organized by the National Gallery of Canada. This show combines soccer and contemporary art and is an opportunity to observe one of the century’s most famous soccer stars (France’s Zinedine Zidane) through an almost idolizing portrait. Inter nationally renowned artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno deploy contemporary conventions of mass media both to paint a portrait of the soccer star and to expose the cultural creation and fascination of heroes. Other shows include: T The Ties That Bind – organized and circulated by the Jewish Museum & Archives of BC – documents Jewish settlement in B.C. from 1858 when the first immigrants arrived in Victoria. T Molten Obsessions showcases contemporary glass beadmaking. T Procession, a new work from Jeff Sawatzky, is a series of charcoal drawings reworked and applied to wooden panelling.

Respect the river The allure of the Fraser River is a powerful thing, especially as it approaches levels not seen here in 40 years. But it can also be dangerous. Both city and provincial officials are urging residents to stay away from the swollen rivers. And with good reason. We’ve already seen one death in B.C. Edward Posnikoff, 72, was standing on a bridge that was swept away near his home in the Crescent Valley near Nelson a week ago. That tragedy prompted Chris Duffy of Emergency Management B.C. to highlight the danger of high river levels, unstable banks and debris. He’s warning people to stay clear of streams and rivers. His concern echoes what authorities have been saying all last week. The river banks are no place for curious onlookers.
Said emergency co-ordinator Jim MacDonald: “What looks like stable ground, may not in fact be stable. “When our staff are required to work on dicey ground like that they are wearing life jackets. That’s how seriously we take it.” Even under normal conditions a river can be a dangerous place. Nearly every year there are reports of fishermen being swept away after slipping on the muddy banks. With the Fraser running as fast as it is, one mistake could be fatal. True, the Fraser River is an awesome sight right now. And even though water levels have stabilized and even receded slightly, the currents are still swift and immensely powerful. The river needs to be treated with respect. Other Hand International sporting events, rather than the weather, appear as though they will determine how I spend my time this summer. For example, we’ve just had two weeks or so of the Euro Cup football championships, the final result of which will be known by the time you read this. Anyone who follows the ponies was also held breathless recently in anticipation of a Canadian, remote as it was, component to the Triple Crown. Unfortunately, at virtually the last minute, the horse pulled up lame and was unable to complete its challenge to the history books. And some weeks ago, Victoria’s Ryder Hesjedal won the prestigious Giro d’Italia, and this weekend began his quest for supremacy in
cycling’s premier event, the Tour de France. So there will go much of July, captivated by the television coverage of the amazing endurance of the riders and the often spectacular scenery of the Tour ... if nothing else, I get an armchair visit to Europe, marveling at just how spectacular is the countryside and mountain vistas. B.C. is outstanding, but it doesn’t hold sole rights to being “beautiful.” While bike racing, and the Tour in particular, has been tainted with doping scandals, most of the elite riders are competing without “enhancements.” Their phenomenal fitness levels that allow them to race, usually uphill, 190 kilometers a day for three weeks is a demonstration of extreme conditioning. Compare that to the 15to 20-second shifts pro hockey players deliver. The bike races are giving it full out for hours on end! Even if you are not a cycling fan, some time spent watching the Tour de France will you get hooked.
Then, as the Tour winds down, the London Summer Olympics will bring on breathless anticipation of Canadian wins – rowing, kayaking, and with luck, track and field, the triathlon, pool sports and possibly

The lawn and yard will suffer, but when I look out the window and see how slowly things have been growing around here lately, there likely won’t be a lot of stuff to worry about, especially if the next couple of months (if wishes were horses...) are hot and dry. ing prominently in cycling’s most significant event and, hopefully, in the Summer Olympics, the old Maple Leaf will definitely earn respect on the world stage this year. So, while international sporting events, foreign economic crises, and impending presidential elections capture media headlines and dominate television coverage, we in this nation – made up mostly of immigrants – have created a place that is the envy of all. We have stability, freedom and relative wealth. What happens in other lands may make us laugh, or cry, or sometimes wring our hands in anguish. But when it comes right down to it, even with some poverty issues, this is still the best place on Earth. I hope you all remembered that on Sunday, during the celebration of Canada’s birth, and during this summer’s cornucopia of competitive world-class events, your Canadian pride will shine. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters Miss neighbourhood fireworks After having a conversation with some colleagues, I was reminded of what this city is truly missing. Twenty years ago, my parents moved my family into a new development. It was a lovely little neighbourhood with tons of young families, and lots of kids for my sister and I to get to know. It was an awesome place to grow up. Everybody knew everybody. Even the retirees living around the corner knew all the children by name. At the end of the summer, we’d have a huge block party where the dads would pull their barbeques into the cul-d-sac and we’d party late
into the night. On Canada Day and Halloween we would canvass the neighbourhood, collecting money for fireworks that adults set off in the cul-d-sac. The kids would all sit out on the front lawns of the houses adjacent, and one of the houses would usually open their garage and serve cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. This was the way we did things then. It was magical. As a child, there is seldom anything that captures the imagination quite like a beautiful fireworks display. When our city decided to ban fireworks, our little neighbourhood lost something.
Our city took away a connection – a celebration. It angers me that because of one person’s experience with fireworks out on Halloween night, we as a city have to suffer. I am still sad that in order to see fireworks we either have to sit through our city’s pathetic display (it is getting better every year) or we have to drive to another city where we can see it. This defeats the whole purpose of community and together ness that our and I am sure many other neighbourhoods seek to maintain. The atmosphere in our subdivision has not been the same
since. It really was a special thing for us. I miss it, and I wish that city council would revisit this issue, and find another way for our community to celebrate this fun time of the year. Aynsley Livingstone

The most common skin condition women experience is cellulite. Approximately eighty-five percent of the female population suffer from it. The appearance of cellulite is usually found on the thighs, buttocks, stomach and sometimes legs and arms. It is often described as a dimpled, cottage cheese looking layer of skin. Lack of exercise hardens the connective tissues in the skin which causes dimpling. Cellulite can worsen as we get older, skin becomes thinner and muscle is replaced with softer expansive fat cells. Studies have found that some topical treatments can reduce the number of fat cells in the skin. Cellulite creams work to flush the fluids from the spaces between the cells. In addition, the massaging motion applied during application of the cellulite treatment boosts circulation and helps eliminate toxins from the body. The best results are achieved when combining these treatments with a healthy diet and exercise regime. ful experience for the dancers,” said Amy Mihal, co-owner/ director of Dance in Motion. “I performed at Disneyland myself when I was younger and found my ability and confidence grew tremendously from the experience.” Mihal and her business partner Nicole Chapleo will lead a delegation of almost 100 dancers, parents and instructors that will take part in the Disney performance. This is the first year Dance in Motion has sent a troupe to Disneyland. Two years ago, Mihal and Chapleo bought the 26-year-old studio, which offers tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary. A third partner in the studio is Hillary Lee, who recently had a baby and will not be going on the trip. Mihal said her dancers could perform in front of hundreds or even thousands, depending on how large the crowds are at Disneyland that day. She said the performers are not nervous, but rather enjoy offering their talents to large audiences. “It’ll be fun – they love performing,” she said. “Everyone is excited.” Disneyland invites perfor mers from around the world to apply for performing arts workshops in theatre, dance, instruments and vocals.

Cycling races On Sunday, July 22, cyclists will embark on a cycling journey through some pristine riding territory in the Fraser Valley. The two races — a 160-km GranFondo and an 80-km MedioFondo route — begin and end at the Fort Langley Historic Site. In between, the cyclists ride to Abbotsford. Organized by not-for-profit association Canadian Velo Event Management Society and Prospera Credit Union, half the proceeds will be donated to Special Olympics B.C. to provide sports programs for those with disabilities. The Sylvan FamilyFondo will be held in conjunction with the Valley GranFondo. Participants enjoy a timed three-km ride in Fort Langley, followed by a safe-cycling session and free entry into the Fort Langley National Historic Site. Cost is $10 per family. School is out for the summer, but Chelsea Jenner and Taylor Lundrigan are working harder than ever. The Abbotsford duo have been selected for the B.C. under-21 provincial team which will compete in the women’s elite division at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. The prestigious tournament opened last Saturday and continues through Monday, July 9 in Surrey, primarily at Softball City. The B.C. squad is facing elite teams from around the globe, including entries from Mexico, Indonesia, Great Britain, Peru, China and the United States. Both girls are also doing double duty with teams in the futures (U19) division – Lundrigan is playing shortstop for her Abbotsford Outlaws 96A squad, while Jenner, a centre fielder, has been picked up by the Richmond Islanders 94 since her usual Abby team isn’t in the Canadian Open. All told, the girls figure to play a minimum of 16 games in just over a week. It’s a schedule that will surely test their stamina, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. “It helps that there’s
no school,” Jenner noted with a chuckle. “It’s going to be crazy. For me, my team only played 13 regular season games. So I’m going to be playing more games in this one week than the whole season.” “We’ll push through it,” Lundrigan added. “If we’re in a final game and we have to be drinking Coke to bring our energy up, we’ll be there. You’ll see us on a caffeine high.” Cracking the B.C. U21 roster for the Canadian Open is a huge feather in both players’ ball caps. They’re the two youngest players on the squad – Jenner is 16, and Lundrigan is 15. But their skills are precocious. They were teammates last summer on the B.C. U16 squad that won gold at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, and both players were among the tourney leaders in batting average. The provincial U21 squad will cut a few more athletes before heading into the rest of its summer schedule, but Lundrigan said she’s thrilled to be with the team at least through the Canadian Open. “It was really nervewracking, getting there (to tryouts) and you see all these girls, and they’re talking about being at SFU,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I Continued on A17

But for Dalton Sward, his unexpected wake-up call last Wednesday morning was of the most welcome variety. Heat back in North Division Abbotsford Heat fans can expect to see more Canadian content in terms of regular season opponents in 2012-13. At the conclusion of the American Hockey League’s board of governor’s annual meeting this week, it was announced that the Heat would move back to the North Division, where they’d spent their inaugural 2009-10 season. Abbotsford had been shifted to the West Division in 2010-11 – a division which featured teams from Texas and Oklahoma. The North Division is a more natural home for the Heat in terms of potential rivalries, in that it includes two other Canadian teams – the Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs affiliate) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (Montreal Canadiens). The division also features the Lake Erie Monsters (Colorado Avalanche) and Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sabres). Other alignment changes include the Grand Rapids Griffins moving to the Midwest Division and the Charlotte Checkers moving to the renamed South (formerly West) Division. The formats for the regular-season schedule and Calder Cup are still to be determined.
The season begins Oct. 12, and a complete schedule will be announced later this summer.
RULE CHANGES COMING The AHL also announced a series of rule changes for the 2012-13 campaign. Q A video goalreview system has been approved. Q The NHL’s new rules restricting players’ ability to put their hand on the puck have been adopted. Players are no longer allowed to place a hand over the puck while it is on the ice to conceal it from an opponent, nor are they allowed to bat the puck with their hand in order to win a faceoff. Both violations call for a minor penalty. Q The AHL is also beta-testing a new hybrid icing rule for the NHL – a measure to avoid dangerous end-boards collisions. When two players are chasing the puck on a potential icing call, if the defender is leading the race when he reaches the faceoff dots, the linesman will stop the play and call icing. If the forechecking player is leading, play will be allowed to continue.

Sward suffered a separated shoulder in January that kept him out of the Giants lineup for six weeks. Upon his return, he wore a shoulder brace that impeded his upper-body mobility. He ended up posting 11 goals and 11 assists in 54 games. But while some youngsters would be crushed at going undrafted, Sward knows there are other routes to pro hockey. Case in point is fellow Abbotsford native Kellan Tochkin, who was bypassed in the 2009 NHL draft but landed a contract from the Canucks after a strong showing at their development camp. "I know Kellan from minor hockey, and I skate a bit with him in the summer," Sward said. "So there's a bunch of different ways you can make it. It's not just about the draft. You've just got to work hard and show what you have, and hopefully somebody sees it along the way." Sward had a decorated minor hockey career in Abbotsford, captaining the bantam Tier 1 Hawks to a provincial title and a silver medal at the Western Canadian
Championship in 2009. Later that spring, the Giants made him a first-round pick in the WHL bantam draft, 21st overall. Sward has carved out a niche as a gritty third-line player with

Michael Erdman Jaik On June 23, 2012 at 710 pm, the world changed forever. Beloved friend, brother, uncle, son and husband to Lori, 41 year old Michael Erdman Jaik, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife at home after a short and courageous battle with lymphoma. Mike was born in Lumby and grew up in the Lumby and Vernon area. He attended most of his schooling in Lumby and graduated from W.L. Seaton in 1988. Mike worked at A&G Supplies, Riverside Forest Products, timber cruising and Bigfoot RV in the Vernon/Lumby area before moving to Mission, BC in 2003 where he worked for Adventurer Rv and, for the past 7 years, Canadian Utilities Construction/ One Call Locators. Mike was a hardworking and conscientious employee and was well liked by his co workers. Mike’s famous work ethic was what stood him apart from others and he could always be counted on to get the job done well. Mike enjoyed travelling, camping hiking, sports of any kind and was athletic beyond belief. Mike was constantly seeking the ultimate tropical snorkeling spots and was just recently becoming SCUBA certiÀed and had planned his Àrst dives in Cuba. Mike loved spending time at the family cabin on Sugar Lake and, while there, could be found on the golf course bright and early most mornings. Mike’s golf swing was amazing and he always said that golf was a life lesson and “a game of centimeters”. Mike was an avid outdoorsman who was in his element in the mountains. When hiking with Mike, he always blazed the trail and was the Àrst to the top all the while encouraging others to come along to enjoy the view. Mike played slowpitch and fastpitch and was a talented player. He made amazing over his head catches in the outÀeld, crept fearlessly close to the batter when playing third and, ran the bases with speed that was astonishing. You would have wanted him on your team. To say Mike was a well liked man would not do justice to how others felt about him. Mike was a gentle, caring and friendly soul who was loved and respected by his family and friends. His energy and genuineness could be instantly felt by others and his sense of humor was quick and clever. Mike laughed daily. Mike loved professional sports speciÀcally, his beloved Packers and Canucks. Mike recently tried purchasing shares of the Pack after they were offered publicly and was so disappointed they were only available to US residents, considered arranging a US address so he could have a piece of Lambeau history. Mike loved his Canucks and never missed a game. If not televised, he would hunker down with the radio to listen. Mike knew history, stats, players, coaches and strategy and was integral in developing his wife’s Canuck fanaticism. Mike will be deeply missed and has left a space that can never be Àlled. He was so special and so amazing that his life will forever be remembered and felt. Lori told him he was like a Super Nova, so bright and so hot he was unable to stay around forever. He’s now back with the stars. Mike’s celebration of life will be held Saturday July 7th at the Lumby Curling Club, 2230 Shields Ave Lumby, BC, at 3 pm. It is open to everyone. Please drop by and celebrate Mike’s life the way he would have liked; happily and with laughter.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Amos Booker, beloved husband, father, and grandfather on Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 at the age of 82 years. Earl is survived by his loving wife Maureen McConnell, his 3 children: Tim, Greg (Angie), and Wendy (Dan) and his 4 cherished grandchildren: Holly, Evan, Renee and Connor. He is also survived by his sister Geraldine McDonald of Kingston, Ontario. Earl was predeceased by his parents, Bertha and Wilmer as well as brothers Donald and Myrle, and sister Wilma. Left to mourn Earl are his first wife Joyce and his very dear friends in Winnipeg. Earl had a very successful 43 year career at the CIBC as well as a happy retirement of 23 years in Winnipeg and most recently in Abbotsford, BC. Earl was a member of the Niakwa Country Club for many years and served as President. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, his sense of humour, and his love of the game of golf. A private memorial service was held in Abbotsford, B.C. A celebration of Earl’s life will be held in Winnipeg at a later date.
