Ian Paton racked up the largest expense claim of any Delta councillor in 2011, according to the annual council remuneration and expenses report released last week.

Between January and December 2011, Paton claimed $8,847. That's more than second-place spender Heather King ($5,959), a former councillor who lost her bid for the mayor's seat in the November civic election, and third-place Coun. Scott Hamilton ($5,784).

Paton explained that in 2011 he travelled to a number of conferences including the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in Halifax, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland Local Government Association in Whistler.

In September, he accompanied Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta CAO George Harvie on a four-day business trip to Ottawa.

Mayor Jackson claimed $3,788 in expenses in 2011, and $10,428 in expenses for the Delta Police Board.

New councillors elected in the November local government election Sylvia Bishop and Jeannie Kanakos both filed zero expenses for 2011.

Meanwhile, former Coun. Anne Peterson spent $5,750 in 2011, Coun. Bruce McDonald spent $5,277 and Coun. Robert Campbell claimed $3,568 in expenses.

Boaters asked to stay off the Fraser The BC River Forecast Centre is maintaining a high streamflow advisory for the lower Fraser River, which means river levels are rising but no major flooding is expected.

As of Wednesday morning (June 27), the centre posted that the Fraser River at Mission was at 6.15 meters and is forecast to reach 6.3 to 6.4 meters this weekend.

"Typically it takes six days for water from rain and snowmelt in these headwaters to travel down to the Lower Fraser Valley," the centre reported. "Due to heavier rain across the Fraser River tributaries, another pulse of water is expected to travel downstream through this week."

The Corporation of Delta has advised boaters to stay off the river during high water flows, warning of the swift currents caused by the rising waters which carry plenty of floating debris downstream.

The municipality also stated that its engineering staff are conducting daily inspections of Delta's dikes, and emergency preparedness staff have been working with the Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre and participating in frequent conference call updates.

Tree removal irks resident

A Ladner resident who has long voiced concerns about a new housing development being built across the street from her was saddened last week to watch a large tree in front of the property cut down.

Based on old photographs, B.J. Pumfrey, who lives in the 4300 block of Arthur Drive, estimates the felled tree was a 150-year-old oak.

"This is prime growing season," she said. "It's occupied by a great many birds and squirrels and it's a very old oak tree."

Brian Hart, of Ladner-based Brian G. Hart & Company architecture and planning firm, said it was necessary to cut down the tree for road improvements.

His project, located on the west side of Arthur Drive, includes two single-family lots facing the street with a detached secondary suite, and 10 single-family residential bare land strata lots that will share a common private road.

Delta council gave final approval to rezoning and Official Community Plan amendments in February.

Hart said that after several public presentations of the project, the neighbourhood indicated the "rural road standard" for this stretch of Arthur Drive was

As such, Hart said the developer agreed to work with the municipality to build better sidewalks, treed boulevards, barrier curbs and a bicycle lane.

"A dedication of land over part of the frontage was required to achieve this new standard. As well the tree impeded the access to the small homes in the western portion of the site," Hart said.

He further noted the tree was located directly under power lines and had been topped by BC Hydro several times. An arborist indicated it was in declining

health as a result.

Despite the promise of improved road conditions, Pumfrey is still concerned about the potential impact of the new development on traffic volume and street parking.

"Our street's going to be a nightmare. We're not going to be able to get in and out of our driveway," she said.

Planting new boulevard trees is no replacement for the oak that once stood, she said.

"They can plant all the trees they want and they're never going to be a 150-year-old oak tree in our lifetime." reporter@southdeltaleader.com

Southlands debate takes hiatus Delta council agrees to spend $125,000 on independent studies related to flooding, storm water and irrigation The ongoing debate over the future of the Southlands property will take a hiatus for the summer and reopen in September at a public meeting hosted by the municipality.

On Monday evening ( June 25), Delta council approved holding an information session about the Southlands development application on Sept. 6 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

The meeting will not be held in July or August

as many people will be on vacation.

Delta was expected to hold the meeting in June, following a pair of info sessions hosted by the developer Century Group in May. But according to a staff report from the Community Planning & Development Department, Delta does not yet have enough information to answer many of the questions raised by agencies, committees of council and the public.

Artistic learning Renaissance Kids in Tsawwassen will combine academics and art

ou won't find any slides, swing sets or Disney memorabilia at the new early learning centre being built in Tsawwassen.

At Renaissance Kids, children are encouraged to create their own play.

Offering kindergarten, junior kindergarten and toddler programs, the facility will follow an integrated curriculum of fine arts and academics for children aged 18 months to six years old.

The centre will be located in the former Southpointe Academy building at Century Square on 56th Street.

Once renovations Christine are complete in Lyon September, the 5,000-square-foot space will be able to accommodate 57 students.

"It's going to be totally transformed," says L i n d a Sh i r l e y, CEO of Renaissance Kids. "The upstairs space we're going to turn into a nice, big arts studio. It's a beautiful space, it's got lots of natural light and it actually lends itself very nicely to an arts studio."

Renaissance Kids, which already has one location in Steveston, is operated

by The Arts Connection, a visual and performing arts facility that has been in Richmond more than two decades.

Shirley says the youngsters at Renaissance Kids are taught to appreciate "the finer things in life" such as music, dance, art and theatre.

"We believe that those things feed a child's soul and those things are really important in order to develop a well-rounded child that will grow up into a well-rounded adult," she says.

"If you present children and put them in an environment of beautiful things, you'll get that beauty back out of them again."

Rather than taking field trips to the pumpkin patch, Renaissance Kids students might take in the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit at Science World or a Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performance.

Shirley says the learning centre's low student-teacher ratio is another thing that sets it apart from other preschools.

"We have the ability to work with the children in much smaller groups, to really focus in on their particular needs, their particular talents," she says.

The Richmond location has a student waiting list, despite continued expansions. Shirley says she decided to open a second location in South Delta after hearing through the "childcare grapevine" there was a need in Tsawwassen for a good-quality children's program with an arts and academic focus.

She was also inspired by the success of Southpointe Academy, which outgrew its former location and last winter moved into a brand new campus on the east side of 56th Street.

"That led us to believe that possibly there was a need for that same level of programming for the younger set," she said.

She hopes Renaissance Kids will fill the gap left by Southpointe when it stopped offering its pre-kindergarten program after relocating.

Because the building is still in the early stages of renovations, Shirley invites interested parents to tour the Richmond location to get a sense of what's to come.

NHL drafts hockey academy grads Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers pick up former Deltans Two graduates of the South Delta Secondary Hockey Academy were drafted to the NHL last weekend.

On June 23, Victoria Royals centre Steven Hodges was selected by the Florida Panthers in the third round at the 2012 NHL entry draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Hodges, born in 1994, was raised in Yellowknife before coming to the South Delta hockey academy.

Academy director Ian Gallagher said Hodges has made a huge sacrifice to develop himself as a hockey player.

"He moved away from home at a very young age to take part in our hockey academy and play locally here, and has continued to develop over time."

Hodges is the first ever Royals' player to be drafted to the NHL, the Victoria team said in a media release.

Tsawwassen native Ryan Olsen, also born in 1994, was drafted in the sixth round to the Winnipeg Jets.

Tour de Delta chair Cal Traversy developed a love for riding on the job up in his name being put forward for the position of chair with the Tour de Delta.

The three-day, three-race event which runs July 6-8 is one best seen first-hand, Traversy says.

"It's one thing to see races like the Tour de France on TV, but you can't beat being there in Delta and getting the whole experience of seeing the riders and hearing the whirring of their tires going by."

Fueling up for that kind of riding can be a challenge. But Traversy has the answer for those wanting to stay away from heavier meals with red meat.

It's his quick chick fajitas which provide plenty of flavour without weighing you down.

Quick chick fajitas INGREDIENTS 3 fresh chicken breasts (cut into strips) Salt and pepper to taste 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil ½ red onion Red, green, yellow, orange peppers DIRECTIONS Add two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a pan with a teaspoon of crushed garlic. Add cut chicken breasts.

Fuel up It didn't take much for Cal Traversy to get bitten by the "cycling bug."

Back when he was with the Vancouver Police Department—he's now a Sgt. with the DPD—Traversy was a member of the mountain bike detachment.

Always keen on staying fit, Traversy, who is chair of the Tour de Delta, found it a great way to combine his profession and get in a decent work out.

Traversy says he'd often ride his road bike to work, then ride the VPD's mountain bikes for 11 or so hours on shift, then come home.

And when he transferred to the Delta Police Department a few years ago, Traversy brought that love of cycling to the North Delta detachment and would saddle up and take to the streets.

On Thursday afternoon (June 14), on 55th Street in Tsawwassen, he saw an elderly man fall and injure himself. The young man called 911 and stayed with the man (Arnold) until help arrived.

I would like him to know that Arnold is fine after being checked out at Delta Hospital. He ended up with quite a few cuts to the

head and some bruises. In all the excitement, no one thought to ask the young man's name or to thank him.

The Wild Bird Center of Delta, The Chocolate Bear Shop Tsawwassen, and Bosley’s Pet Center Tsawwassen for their generous donations of prizes to the Guild’s “Cause For Paws, Feathers and Fur," our annual fundraiser for OWL, Orphan Wildlife Society and the Delta Animal Shelter.

Wi t h t h e i r h e l p a n d t h e wonderfully creative birdhouses our artists made, we were able to raise over $800 to assist both organizations in their efforts to care for the animals.

What really bothered me is that someone threw a vodka bottle at the playground equipment, shattering glass all over the equipment and the ground around it.

I did not want my grandchildren or any other children cutting themselves so I spent about half an hour picking up the tiny pieces of glass out of the mulch.

I understand young adults want to have a good time and celebrate at the end of the school year. I know I did it when it was younger, but please think about the innocent little children that play in the park. Some day it could be your own children or grandchildren that find glass in the playground.

Monster apples create concern Apples have a long-standing reputation as a healthy food. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, as Benjamin Franklin is said to have put it.

But the Frankenstein complex has an equally long, if not longer history. That’s the nickname given to the fear that man’s messing around with the building blocks of life will eventually create something that will destroy humanity.

Bring the two together and you’ve got a problem. It’s hard to blame the B.C. Fruit Growers for their concern that the introduction of a genetically modified apple could ruin the reputation of B.C.'s Okanagan as a source of high-quality healthy fruit.

And while Neal Carter, whose company has used gene modification to create a non-browning apple, certainly has his eye on the commercial return while extolling the benefits of his Arctic apples, there is one benefit that stands out.

And, coincidentally, it’s the same as what made the apple’s reputation. Most people don’t care about a little browning, but it is also indicative of a breakdown of the apple’s nutritional factors.

Take away the browning, and the vitamins and anti-oxidants stay.

So, on one hand, we have growers wanting to preserve the reputation of their product as a healthy food and on the other we have an apple that retains its nutritional value for longer. Anyone see some common ground here?

Consider too that growers have been practising genetic modification for centuries, albeit by the much slower selection and grafting methods.

Caution is a good thing, especially when it comes to monkeying with genes.

Extensive testing, too, is a good thing.

But allowing caution to grow into an unreasoning fear is never a good thing. If turning off an enzyme can preserve the best aspects of an apple, it shouldn’t be thrown away on account of ancient fear.

A Tsawwassen teen will get a chance to pit her fastpitch skills against some of the world’s top talent next month.

Marnie-Lynne (ML) Schneider, 16, is the only South Delta resident on the Delta Heat U-18 Rep A team, which is playing in the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey June 30 to July 9.

She says she has confidence in her team, which will be battling for top spot in the Futures Gold championship. The division consists of 24 elite-level youth teams from Canada, the United States, Brazil, Ecuador and Venezuela.

“I think we are a pretty good team, I think we definitely stand a good chance, but I guess we’ll just have to see,” says Schneider, a shortstop and second baseman.

Although this is Schneider’s first time playing in the fastpitch tournament, she has been an enthusiastic audience member at the women’s games in past years.

“And if the youth teams can play like the women’s teams then I’m a little bit frightened,” she says, noting the high calibre of play.

Schneider’s athletic ability extends from the softball diamond to the soccer pitch. She is a winger with the Ladner Threat U-18 squad—a team whose accomplishments she says she’s particularly proud of.

Schneider says having very understanding coaches helps her balance sports with her other priorities—like school, friends and art.

J

oshua Baerg is considered a late starter in the world of competitive swimming.

But you wouldn’t know it by the way he handles himself in the pool.

After just three years of training with the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club, the 16-yearold Delta Secondary student brought home five gold medals and one bronze medal last week from the 2012 Pan American Games for the Deaf.

Held June 12 to 24 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the multi-sport event marked Baerg’s debut on the international starting blocks. He was the only athlete from B.C. to compete for Team Canada, which included five swimmers.

“I was nervous at first because I wasn’t sure how I was going to do because I’ve never met these people before,” Baerg told the Leader poolside after a recent afternoon

practice in Ladner.

His pre-competition jitters were quickly alleviated. Baerg took first place in the 50-metre, 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke, as well as the 4x100 medley relay.

And, much to his surprise, he earned a bronze in the 100-metre backstroke—not an event he specializes in.

Participating in the Pan Am Games for the Deaf also gave Baerg the rare chance to compete on equal footing as his rivals. Instead of a loud buzzer signaling the start of the race, it was the flash of a strobe light that prompted swimmers to dive in.

Creative coaching Baerg was born profoundly deaf in both ears.

“I didn’t start speaking until I was around five,” he says, explaining he got a cochlear implant when he was three-years-old which allows him some hearing.

“But it can’t get wet, so when I’m in the water I’m totally deaf.”

Being the only hearing-impaired member of the Winskill Dolphins comes with challenges.

“You kind of miss out on a lot of what’s going around,” Baerg says. “And when the other swimmers are talking I can never hear what they’re saying.”

Baerg recalls one swim meet at Watermania in Richmond when he accidentally false started. While the other swimmers were lined up head-down, awaiting the buzzer, Baerg was looking up at the soundbox, which flashes a light when it buzzes.

“There was glass windows on the side and I actually saw a flash and I jumped into the pool,” he recalls.

But the starting buzzer had not yet sounded. Baerg figures he was probably reacting to car headlights in the parking lot.

Winskill Dolphins head coach Ben Keast has found ways to effectively communicate with Baerg when he’s in the water. Keast has even learned a few basic signs like “faster” and “stop.”

“Ben is a good coach because he looks me in the face and I’m able to read his lips and he writes on the board,” Baerg says.

“Josh is very good at understanding or following my movements or asking questions of me if he doesn’t know what’s happening,” Keast says. “He’s not afraid to speak up if he’s not sure.”

Keast adds some of non-verbal coaching techniques he has developed for Baerg, such as writing out the daily workout expectations, have been beneficial for the whole team.

“So I’m doing things for the group with Josh in mind that helps everybody,” he says.

Steep learning curve It was Baerg’s mother Barb who decided to sign him up for swimming when he was 13-years-old.

Although he was playing soccer and baseball at the time, Barb says he wasn’t getting enough fitness from those sports. So he started taking lessons at Winskill twice a week.

“And he did so well right away that in the

first year they moved him right away to the competitive side,” she says.

Now she’s the self-described “nervous mother” sitting in the bleachers at his swim meets. Even though she was not able to accompany her son to Brazil, Barb says the news of his victories spread quickly.

“We’re really thrilled and proud. Everybody is. The whole neighbourhood is,” she says.

Meanwhile, Keast has watched Baerg develop a great deal as an athlete in a relatively short period.

“Initially he was hesitant to do some of the work and now he’s just bought into it and he’s seeing the results I think, so it’s really inspiring him to do more,” Keast says. “He’s come a long way as a mature swimmer, knowing what he needs to do.”

Getting to the top These days, Baerg spends about 20 hours a week training at either Ladner Outdoor Pool or the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre in Tsawwassen.

“During the school year it’s a bit hectic because you swim before school and then you swim after school, then you have to go to the gym the next morning,” he says.

Going into Grade 12 in September, his academic future is also top of mind.

“I’d like to go into the sciences for sure. I’m thinking of either biology or geosciences,” he says of his post-secondary ambitions.

In the immediate future, Baerg is training hard for upcoming competitions.

He will be up against able-bodied swimmers at the B.C. AAA Championships in Richmond at the end of next week, followed by the Canadian Age Group Championships in Calgary later in July.

Baerg has also qualified for the 2013 Deaflympics in Bulgaria.

When he is tired and nursing achy muscles, he looks to fellow Canadian breaststroke swimmers Annamay Pierse and Martha McCabe for inspiration.

“I see how well they’ve done and I kind of wish I was where they are,” he says. “I want to push myself to get to the top.” reporter@southdeltaleader.com

We’ve got your guide to family-friendly festivities July 1 Party time on Delta Street In honour of our nation’s birthday, the Delta Museum and Archives Society will spill out onto Delta Street in Ladner Village to host its annual July 1 party.

This family-oriented, fun-filled event kicks off at 9 a.m. with the traditional pancake and sausage breakfast, cooked up by the North Delta, Ladner and Scottsdale Lions Clubs.

Breakfast will be available for purchase until 11 a.m., with all proceeds going to support the museum society’s educational programs for kids.

Official ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. with the singing of the national anthem and messages from local dignitaries.

Then, witness the

cutting of a massive birthday cake, with enough for everyone to enjoy.

Party goers will also be entertained with toe-tapping, dance-in-the-street music by the local Celtic band Doghouse, as well as opportunities to enjoy outdoor crafts, activities and contests. Drop by the society’s historical display booth to learn about Delta’s history.

The museum will be open for attendees to explore the three floors of exhibits, and children can participate in a museum scavenger hunt to find clues and facts that showcase the Canadian provinces. There is fun for everyone!

There is much about Canada to inspire our rich collection of national symbols: we are a country with welcomed cultural diversity, we have four distinct seasons, and we are blessed with stunning landscapes of prairies, forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes. Historical events and our natural heritage have inspired the most famous of our symbols.

Perhaps the most recognizable symbol today is the maple leaf, just like the one that adorns the Canadian flag. The maple leaf image was adopted widely in the 18th century and has appeared on the uniforms and insignias of the Canadian military since 1850. All the grave stones of soldiers who have died in combat and are buried overseas or in Canada are engraved with a maple leaf.

Another important symbol is the beaver.

This animal’s image was closely linked with the Hudson’s Bay Company many centuries ago, when Europeans first made their way inland.

The beaver was later adopted as the logo of the Canadian Pacific Railway and is used today by many other groups and associations across Canada. The image of the beaver is engraved on the five-cent coin, and it appears on the coats of arms of Saskatchewan and Alberta as well as some cities, including Toronto.

The Canadian identity is also partly defined by our history with the British monarchy, highlighted by the image of Queen Elizabeth II on our twenty-dollar bills. Indeed, symbols of the British monarchy make our Canadian identity very distinctive when compared with that of the United States. Other distinguishing traits are the RCMP and bilingualism.

Federal government announces a set of new mortgage rules

CHBA forecasts fewer first-time buyers The federal government announced new rules for mortgages last week, including changing the maximum mortgage amortization period from 30 years to 25. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty also announced that insured mortgages will only be available to buyers purchasing a home for under $1 million.

“We want people to make sure that when they purchase the most important purchase they’ll probably ever make in their life, that they do so in a prudent way,” says Flaherty.

The government expects that less than five per cent of new home purchasers will be affected

by the changes, but the Canadian Home Builders’ Association sees it having repercussions on a certain demographic.

“The shorter maximum mortgage amortization period will reduce housing demand by eroding affordability,” says CHBA President Ron Olson. “For those who would otherwise have selected a 30-year amortization, it will take additional income each month to service new mortgage debt.

Some potential new home buyers will no longer qualify, and this will disproportionately affect younger firsttime home buyers.”

The changes will take effect on July 9.

La Ladner school gets 'play' money from province Boaz Jospeh, reporter Suurey/North Delta Leader Kezia Schmidt learned to spell her name last year at the age of two with the help of her older sister Eva, then just five.

Although Kezia, at three-years-old, is still too young to join Eva at school, there's an educational kinship in the family. Not only are both their parents teachers, two of the family's three kids do much of their learning outside the classroom.

Eva, six, and brother Theo, seven, split their studies between home and a fourclassroom wing in North Delta's Pinewood Elementary School as part of the Delta School District's Home Quest program.

Theo, though a sharp kid and an early reader, was having some difficulty with regular classroom instruction, explains

his mother Jill.

After taking him to Home Quest for six months, Theo's educational future—and that of his sisters—was altered forever.

"I feel like my whole parenting philosophy changed," says Jill.

Previously, she parented in the breaks between Theo's classes, playing catchup while juggling his school and home activities.

With home schooling, Jill felt she finally had the opportunity to invest time in her kids and signed up Eva for kindergarten the following year as Theo entered Grade 2.

"Now I'm their teacher, I'm their mother; I had better be a good role model."

Ladner's Hawthorne Elementary School is set to receive $50,000 from the provincial government to spend on its playground.

Hawthorne is one of 80 elementary and middle schools in B.C. receiving a total $3.3 million for the repair, improvement and replacement of playgrounds.

The funding announcement was made Thursday (June 21) in New Westminster by Education Minister George Abbott.

“Our government is committed to providing students and communities with safe and modern playground facilities to promote play-based learning, physical activity and healthy lifestyles,” Abbott said.

This is the final phase of an $8-million playground funding commitment made by Premier Christy Clark and Abbott last September at Tsawwassen's South Park Elementary School, bringing the total number of schools benefiting from the two-year program to 227 provincewide.

Decreasing consumption Delta School District energy manger wins BC Hydro award for his longtime commitment to conservation and education Christine Lyon, Reporter South Delta Leader Swapping a single light bulb for a more energy-efficient variety likely won’t make a big difference to your electricity bill, but changing 8,000 lights can mean big savings.

Delta School District energy manager Jim White can attest to that. Over the past four years, energy-efficient upgrades at Delta schools have added up to $1 million in savings for the district—money that is invested back into the classrooms.

For his contributions toward energy conservation, White was awarded the 2012 Torchbearer Award from BC Hydro as the top energy manager in the province for the education sector.

“It’s a great honour for me, but it’s a great honour for Delta as well because it just shows the commitment really from all levels,” says White, who has been with the school district for 33 years.

As energy manager for the past four years, he has been

tasked with reducing electrical, gas and water consumption district-wide and introducing new power-saving technology.

Changes in recent years have included new indoor and outdoor lights, retrofitted heating units, upgraded boilers and occupancy censors.

“Overall, the total energy, which is based on gas and electricity, was a 28 per cent reduction in that four-year period and was almost $1 million from what we were paying four years ago to what we’re paying now,” he says. “Last year we saved 4.8 gigawatt hours.”

Compared to other B.C. school districts, White says Delta excels when it comes to energy efficiency.

“We’re ahead of the curve.

We’re very high on the list of new achievements, new technology.”

White says that once the technology is changed over, student behaviour will follow, and that should add up to even more savings.

“They don’t want to read the bill from last month; they want to see what they’re using now,” White says.

“If they learn at school, they take it home. If they’re turning the lights off in the classroom, they’ll go home and tell mom and dad to do the same thing.

So it’s a culture change.”

There are more plans on the horizon. The Delta and Burnaby school districts are participating in an 18-month pilot project to test out individual classroom heating units from Fortis B.C. Delta also has a new agreement with Fortis to introduce geothermal heating at 11 schools.

While upgrades and retrofits can be costly, White says the district is seeing a return on its investment. Plus, the longer lifespan of energy-efficient technology means less money spent on labour.

While $1 million in savings is a big achievement, White says there are always improvements to be made.

Empty Bowls event raises funds for South Delta Food Bank and Community Kitchen

Aroon started the kitchen a few years ago to help feed those at Christmas time. And that grew to include weekly appearances at the Delta Food Bank.

Aroon told students and parents at the Empty Bowls event the opportunity to provide the service filled a need

for those relying on the food bank who may not be adept at preparing food to get an immediate meal.

Aroon thanked those gathered for the donations and said the fundraiser is a good way of setting an example to the young students.

“That’s the main lesson here,” she said.

Tsawwassen students help fill a big need Students from Tsawwassen’s South Park Elementary school continued their generous donations to the hungry with the Empty Bowls event last week.

The program has students hand craft clay bowls which are then used for a special lunch their parents attend at the school where for a donation the bowl is filled with a hearty, vegetable soup.

Money raised goes to a local, charitable organization.

This year, the $700 raised will go to the South Delta Food Bank/Community Kitchen, said teacher Yvette Kruckenberg, who added the event is a way of making the students socially responsible.

The winner of this year’s Begbie Canadian History Contest is Scott Peverelle, a Grade 12 student at Seaquam Secondary School.

The Begbie contest is a national test written by senior secondary students from across Canada. The aim of the competition is to provide students with an opportunity to test their skills in history against those of students from schools across Canada. The contest questions are based on major events in Canadian history from 1850 to the present. The emphasis is on critical thinking skills using primary sources such as political cartoons, paintings, posters, graphs, maps, statistics, songs, speeches, diaries, letters, newspaper articles and memoirs.

Since the contest’s inception in 1993, no one has ever scored 100 per cent – until this year. Peverelle is the first student in 19 years to answer all of the questions correctly.

Coordinator Barb Stoliker says that ownership of their youngsters' education is a common reason why parents sign their kids up for the program.

There's also the oneon-one learning for kids with unique abilities, the resources available for parents, the more flexible schooling hours, the social nature of the networking with other families, and the often outdoorsy nature of the learning.

Reading and math are done at home, as one would expect of home schooling, but students go to school or on field trips for phys-ed, science, music or art activities.

"Some things are hard to do just around the kitchen table," explains Stoliker, who has run the program for four years.

The program, which began in 2003, also offers a lending library in the school resource room, photocopying services, educational supplies and complete

lesson programs for different grades.

There are also regular report cards as well as one-hour "portfolio" interviews each term in which teachers evaluate the students' (and parents') progress.

Home Quest, available to students from kindergarten to Grade 7, is a free program that currently has 89 students and almost two dozen kids on the waiting list for next September.

Jill counters the stigma that home schooling is for kids with social issues, adding that all children are either naturally social or not, and home schooling will not make them less social, since they still have school friends they regularly interact with.

She adds that parents grow more social, too, with Home Quest: "I love that I'm friends with the families—it's like family play-dates."

Tsawwassen man receives Diamond Jubilee medal Long serving commissionaire one of several to be granted award Tsawwassen's Brian Hatch is among four commissionaires from mainland B.C. who were presented with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal June 15 at the Delta Grand Okanagan in Kelowna.

The Honourable Steven Point, Lt. Gov. of B.C., presented the medals honouring Canadians who have made a significant contribution to the well being of their community and country.

As a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to provide meaningful work to former members of the Canadian Forces and RCMP, commissionaires were allocated a total of 80 medals by the office of the Governor General of Canada to be awarded to deserving members in their 17 divisions across the country.

The medal is especially meaningful to Hatch since he is a history buff and an avid collector of commissionaires memorabilia. He began the collection in 2002 and since then has amassed a large array of medals, badges, uniforms and documents.

“I was quite surprised when I was told I was being awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal,” says Hatch. “I have a passion for commissionaires’ history but I never expected to become a part of it in this way.”

In 2001 Hatch became site supervisor for commissionaires’ client E-Comm 911, the emergency communications centre for southwest British Columbia which answers more than one million 911 calls each year within Metro Vancouver, sea-to-sky communities and the Sunshine Coast.

As a supervisor he is the liaison between E-Comm and commissionaires’ head office, supervises all the commissionaires assigned to this site, and deals with security issues as they arise. Hatch also served in the Canadian Forces.

This is not the first time he has been awarded a medal.

In 2001, he was awarded the Royal Canadian Legion’s highest award, the Meritorious Service Medal, for his service contribution to the legion.

Lieutenant Governor presented the medals to these four commissionaires for their ongoing service to Canadians.

New park opened in North Delta Site will host the municipality's first ever Luminary Festival in mid-September

Delta’s newest park was officially opened on June 19.

Mayor Lois Jackson, Merv Romilly, president of Delsom Estates and Neil Chrystal, president and CEO of Polygon Homes, were on hand to welcome the community to Sunstone Park.

Located on Delsom Crescent within the Sunstone residential neighbourhood, this new public amenity is built around a tranquil lake and is connected to the surrounding community by a network of trails totaling four kilometres.

Highlights of the park include an expansive children’s playground,

basketball courts, a lush grass hillside creating a natural amphitheatre and a picturesque dock area overlooking the lake.

Surrounded by a new community of townhomes, the park is a welcome gathering place for the new residents and the surrounding community. The park will host Delta’s first ever Luminary Festival on September 15 and in preparation for that, a series of lantern making workshops will be held.

More details on this event will be available on the Corporation of Delta’s website in the coming weeks.
