Big envelope for a bigger cheque… Knights of Columbus, Father Herbert Bourne Council 8490, members presented a $25,000 cheque to the South Cariboo Health Foundation directors on June 26. The money will be used to improve health services in the South Cariboo. We've seen oversized cheques before but Knight Konrad Schmid-Meil even created an envelope to go with it.

Tennis players sought for ‘Whippledon’

Submitted photo

Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students Andrea Zemanek, left, and Alicia Briggs, right, received $1,000 bursaries from Williams Lake and District Credit Union 100 Mile House Branch manager Shawna Norton.

Credit Union provides bursaries for PSO grads Williams Lake and District Credit Union provided two $1,000 bursaries to Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School graduates. Provision of bursaries to local students, Alicia Briggs and Andrea Zemanek, is consistent with the WLDCU’s commitment to support its members and their communities. Briggs will head to the University of Lethbridge this fall where she is enrolled in a pre-medical program with a major in biology. A judo competitor at the national level, she also instructs a children’s class at the local judo club. While at PSO, she participated in the peer counselling class, and the Amnesty Club. Briggs says she is excited to spend the summer working for the BC Forest Service as a firefighter. Zemanek heads to Queens University this fall to commence general studies for a Bachelor of Science degree. Future fields of interest are kinesiology or physiotherapy. She loves the outdoors and outdoor activities, such as hiking, rowing and skiing, and is hoping

to work on an Initial Attack Crew fighting fires this summer. A participant in the PSO leadership program and the British Columbia

Co-operative Association’s YES Leadership Camp, Zemanek intends to use her leadership skills by volunteering at this year’s camp.

Wouldn’t it be great if people valued animals so much that spaying and neutering your pet was just a socially accepted norm? While many people ensure their animals aren’t adding to British Columbia’s pet overpopulation crisis, many otherwise caring pet guardians don’t take this important step. Tragically, many more animals are born in B.C. than there are homes for. The BC SPCA and other animal rescue organizations shelter and find homes for tens of thousands of these unwanted animals each year, but sadly many more are simply abandoned by their guardians and suffer a cruel death from starvation, disease, predation or injury. The BC SPCA is urging all pet guardians to have their pets sterilized if they haven’t already done so. In addition to saving lives, your pet will live a calmer and happier life. Here are just some of the benefits for your pet: • Neutering generally reduc-

es aggressive behaviours in pets. Neutered dogs are calmer and less likely to bite, attack or get into altercations at the dog park. Neutered cats don’t have the drive to mark and protect their territory and are less likely to spray or get into cat fights. • Female cats go in and out of heat every three weeks between January and November. In addition to preventing unwanted litters, spaying your cat will reduce her desire to escape to find a mate, spraying or inappropriate elimination, howling and attracting unwanted male cats onto your property. • Spaying or neutering your

Celebrate Canada’s 145th birthday Three British colonies – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the territory containing Ontario and Quebec - put aside their differences in language, legalcustom, and historical dispute to create the beginnings of what we now call Canada. One year later, the gold mining town of Barkerville celebrated the anniversary

of that historic union by throwing the firstever recorded “Dominion Day party on July 1, 1868 – three years before British Columbia joined the Confederation. As part of the renowned heritage site’s own 150th anniversary season, Barkerville Historic Town is at it again and Dominion Day is set to explode (almost

Barkerville will be bringing back its traditional Dominion Day activities with gusto, starting with the cutting of an eight-foot long, 100plus pound Happy Birthday Canada cake at 11 a.m. At 11:30, there will be a special ribboncutting ceremony for a new exhibit of multi-media representations of Barkerville’s iconic St. Saviour’s church, at the McIntyre House. Barkerville’s timehonoured main-street parade of costumed interpreters will commence at noon, starting at the real St.

Saviour’s, and will be followed by an array of traditional Victorian games for both children and adults for the remainder of the afternoon, including a broad jump, sack race, tug-o-war, egg toss, greasy pole climb, and more. At 7 p.m., there will be the premiere of Newman & Wright’s 1930s live radio show WCFB: ON AIR at the Theatre Royal, followed by the House Hotel’s “old-time dance party. Mill Site Lodge/Fischer Place Auxiliary members Jay Lester, left, and Carol England received the proceeds of the June 9 meat draw from Angel Charbonneau of the Dusty Rose Pub in 70 Mile House. During the past six months, the auxiliary has received more than $950 from the meat draws thanks to the generosity of the patrons, with an extra $200 donated by Tim Zabaras of 100 Mile Wood Products.

M-J Cousins, South Cariboo Health Foundation PR and Fundraising co-ordinator, received $1,000 cheque from Harry Bishop, middle, and Tony Eades of the Highway 24 Interlakes Lions Club. The money will be used as part of the ongoing campaign to purchase equipment for the South Cariboo Health Centre.

Makayla Fremlin, front, found something cute and fluffy at the resent Mill Site Lodge/Fischer Place Auxiliary Garage Sale. Checking out her find was shopper Fran Vercelli, right, and auxiliary member Heather Underhill.

South Cariboo Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had its year-end performance on June 8 in the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School gymnasium. Regan Barrett, standing, and Klaudie Slosarkova performed a graceful duet with scarves and it was one of many skilled performances that thrilled the full-house audience.

Anita Hedtfeld, left, presented a $393.39 cheque to Mary Mann, of the 100 Mile Food Bank Society, on behalf of the New Apostolic Church, which held a garage and bake sale June 16. Hedtfeld says the church chose the food bank as the recipient because the economy isn’t good. Noting the food bank is now closed for the summer, Mann says the money will come in handy in September because usage is growing.

New motorcycle safety laws here Motorcyclists are reminded new motorcycle safety regulations took effect on June 1. All motorcyclists and passengers in British Columbia must wear motorcycle helmets that display the proper industry safety certification label. Helmets must comply with standards outlined by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), Snell Memorial Foundation 2005 or 2010, or United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). Riders found violating the new helmet laws will receive a $138 fine. Monika Paterson photo

Post it here... Home-based business owners David Thatcher and Eva Goertz have erected a new bulletin board between Nuthatch Books and the 100 Mile Laundromat. They found there was a need for small home-based businesses to promote themselves, as they were not allowed to do so on other bulletin boards in town.

Not everyone was stopped by the rain The 108 Ladies Day was cancelled again June 19 due to the rainy conditions. Nevertheless, 10 hearty souls decided to play their own game and off they went swinging in the rain,” says club vicecaptain Gloria Corno.

sections, experiments, and various fun interactive projects. What I remember most of all was building a rocket car, along with a vast array of other projects. I am proud to say I have had the opportunity to be an instructor for EUReKA! and I’m extremely enthused I was able to help other youth have the same awesome experience I did all those years ago. EUReKA! will be coming to 100 Mile House on July 9-13 and is welcoming campers seven-14 years to attend the week-long program. The camp will be taking place at South Cariboo Rec. Centre. By Cara Karpluk Science is the study of absolutely everything around us. We live it, breathe it, and even eat it. When I was 10 years old, I attended my first science summer camp and was introduced to the idea that science surrounds and fills us. It was a camp called the EUReKA! Science Program – a nonprofit, student-run organization based out of Thompson Rivers University. I was never a child that was immediately drawn towards the sciences, but EUReKA! shed a unique and exciting light towards it in a fun, friendly environment. During my week with my fellow campers, we were introduced to all different aspects of science from chemistry to biology, physics to engineering, and computers. The instructors were energetic and dedicated to helping us explore through dis-

into place to protect both passengers and riders. The Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles is working with police and motorcyclists to ensure the new helmet and seating regulations will be applied fairly and fines will be issued to riders putting their safety at risk. Police also have educational material to distribute to riders

to inform them about the new laws. About two-thirds of crashes between a motorcycle and another vehicle are the fault of the other vehicle. Important tips • Check your mirrors frequently, be aware of road conditions that pose hazards to motorcyclists and look carefully for traffic at intersections. It can be difficult to judge the speed and distance of a motor-

cyclist so be extra cautious, especially when turning left. • Watch for signs, such as turn signals, shoulder checks or leaning, that signal the rider may turn or change lanes. • Motorcycles use a full lane. Leave at least three seconds

of following distance behind a motorcycle. • Acknowledge riders with a wave or eye contact, they know you see them. Give riders the space they need to change lanes and never try to pass a motorcycle using the same lane.

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! B.C. to add 190 nurse practitioners By Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. Liberal government is spending $22.2 million to fund 190 new nurse practitioner positions around the province over the next three years. British Columbia

established nurse practitioner training in 2005, with a master’s degree program that allows registered nurses to take on many of the functions traditionally reserved for doctors. The health ministry states there are currently 225 nurse

Sometime between June 23 and 24 in the early morning hours, suspect(s) caused several thousand dollars worth of damage in the area of Horse Lake Road/Blackstock Road. It is believed there were at least two suspects involved. The damage consisted of ripping up flowerbeds and gardens and causing loss to personal property. If you have any information on this or any other crimes in the 100 Mile House area call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your identity will remain unknown. Should your information lead to the arrest of the responsible party Crime Stoppers will pay cash for the TIP.

practitioners registered with the College of Registered Nurses of B.C., but 72 are not working in that capacity and another 30 are graduating from the program this year. Health Minister Mike de Jong said the new program is designed to close that gap. The positions are seen as important in shifting the healthcare system from an acute care model to a preventive and chronic-care model that better matches the actual demand and B.C.’s aging population. The government passed legislation in 2011 to allow nurse practitioners to provide their full scope of practice, including diagnosis, prescribing drugs, ordering diagnostic tests and treating most common medical conditions. NDP Leader Adrian Dix called the program an overdue

measure he has been urging the government to do for several years. “What the government was doing was training nurse practitioners and seeing them go the United States and go to Ontario because the government that trained them didn’t think highly enough of the program to actually have jobs here.” There are currently 45 nurse practitioner training positions, 15 each at the University of B.C., the University of Victoria and the University of Northern B.C.

South Cariboo Health Foundation

The story of Lumber and founders David and Susan Ainsworth, detailing the history

of 100 Mile House and area

One Day at a Time documents the tremendous revolution that took place in the B.C. Interior’s forest industry three and four decades ago. In one way or another, Dave Ainsworth has had his hand in every aspect of this revolution. Dave is one of those people who knows how to put his vision into practice. It’s this tremendous resourcefulness we owe him credit for. I know of no other book that so accurately records the vital changes that have taken place in the woods and at the sawmills; it’s a record that will benefit the whole industry. ~ Ray Williston, B.C.
