Judge’s scathing comments about court delays supported by supreme court justice PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A Campbell River judge erred in staying impaired driving charges, but the BC Supreme Court did back up the judge’s stinging comments on the lengthy delays plaguing the provincial court system.

The case centres around Albert Turner, a logger from Port Hardy who was stopped for alleged drunk driving on April 11, 2010.

One month later, he was officially charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle with an unlawful blood-alcohol concentration.

For various reasons, the case did not proceed to trial until Jan. 18, 2011. And, at that time, provincial court Judge Brian Saunderson issued a stay of proceedings Continued on A5

In an unusual two-and-a-half hour period, starting at 6:30 p.m., Mounties responded to five calls for fights in progress at various public locations in the city. There were no serious injuries and alcohol was the contributing factor in most, if not all, of the incidents. A few spent the night in jail with some combatants earning themselves a day in court.

Regardless of the length of your planned road trip, operating an RV safely and legally will maximize your pleasure and head off TYEE trouble before it happens.

Towing most recreational vehicles does CHEV not require more than a valid class 5 or class 7 driver’s licence here in BC. However, some castles on wheels weigh more than 4,600 kilograms when fully loaded require either a house trailer endorsement (code 07) on these licences or a higher licence class or a heavy trailer endorsement (code 20). Forget this detail and a traffic check can halt your vacation trip on the spot.

Now that you have thought about it and decided that you need the house trailer endorsement, how do you proceed? Pick up or download a copy of Towing a Recreational Trailer from ICBC. Study it thoroughly because you will have to pass a recreational trailer knowledge test. You will also have to have your vision and hearing checked and answer questions based on your medical health. You will be issued a learner driver’s licence if you are successful.

Once you’ve practiced, schedule your road test. Be prepared to demonstrate a proper pre-trip inspection and complete the road test while towing a house trailer that weighs more than 4,600 kg. Also, check out your local driving school. Many schools have specific RV towing courses to help you prepare with confidence.

Police attended a blockade of Northern Pressure Treated Wood’s pole peeling plant on Duncan Bay Road Wednesday morning.

“We’ve been out since early this morning,” said Tracey Deller, one of the more prominent spokespersons for a group of Duncan Bay and Gordon roads residents who are upset with the location of a pole peeling plant on an industrially-zoned property adjacent to rural homes and a trailer court.

The residents have been protesting the plant since it opened in January and have been opposing it since it was approved last fall.

The residents have kept up a steady stream of pressure on city council, staging protests and appearing as delegations.

Their actions have also targetted the Strathcona Regional District.

Wednesday’s protest was the latest action by the residents and demonstrates an increase in their level of desperation.

Most protests at the plant have been vocal and focused on being visible but Wednesday they blocked the entrance to the plant, prompting a phone call to the police.

Mounties attended around 9 a.m., talked with the protestors,

told them to keep the roadway clear and then left. The protestors were peaceful and acquiesced to the police’s request.

Deller said she was initially relieved to hear that the police were on their way because she and the residents feel the plant is illegal and that a police visit might prompt some action.

police were noncommittal on the plant’s legality.

“They said it’s a grey area,” Deller said.

It’s not grey for the neighbours of the plant.

“This should not have gone in here, period,” said Connie Cawley, who lives across the road from the plant.

“It’s horrible, just horrible.”

Cawley described living on near the plant

as a day-long torture of not only buzzing saws but also logs being dumped.

“Then the crashing of the logs, it’s like when you get the clouds come in and you get thunder,” Cawley said. “It’s just loud.”

Residents are also upset about the danger posed by truckloads of logs negotiating the road. Cawley said it’s going to get even more dangerous when the traffic increases on the road once BC Hydro gets underway with its nearby John Hart Dam upgrade, anticipated to start next year.

Traffic over the dam will be diverted to Gordon Road which will increase the amount of vehicles on Gordon Road, increasing the chances of an accident with the pole trucks.

“That’s five years you are going to have the traffic on this road,” Cawley said.

The protestors eventually withdrew their protest and workers returned to work later in the morning.

Knife used as brothers fight The police dog apprehended a 21-yearold man accused of stabbing his brother.

The incident occurred on Sunday, around 11 a.m., when police were called to a residence located in the 500 block of S. Alder St. Upon arrival, officers found a man who had sustained minor wounds to his leg and chest.

The suspect, the man’s brother, had fled the home, but was found a short distance away by the police dog.

He was taken into custody without incident and is now facing potential charges of assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon.

Lock up those sheds, RCMP warn

It is believed the offences are related, and easily accessible items were targeted.

RCMP advise taking extra precautions and the extra moment to lock up your property in order to protect it from thieves.

Judge Saunderson blamed Crown counsel as well as systematic delays caused by an underfunded and undermanned court system, as his reasons for the decision to stay the charges.

“We have a total delay period…delay attributable to the Crown and so on…which is well outside the period of time that is permissible according to the Supreme Court of Canada,” the judge said, as he did cut the Crown s o m e s l a ck . “ T h e Crown is placed in an extremely dif ficult position…when having to decide between any number of cases on its list and deem one to be more important than the other.”

“It comes as no surprise to anybody in this province…that there is not enough court time, and it seems to me – and there are many successful applications for judicial stays in British Columbia, many, many of them – that the government has made a decision… it has simply decided not to provide adequate funding,” said Judge Saunderson. “It is a regrettable state of affairs, but that is what it is.”

The judge’s decision to stay the charges was challenged by the Crown in B.C. Supreme Court. The case was heard in Courtenay on May 29, and a decision was handed down June 12.

In a written decision, Justice Christopher Grauer said that while some of the delays in the case were attributable to the Crown, some were due to the availability of the defence lawyer.

As a result, while the case did take 20 months to proceed to trial, Justice Grauer said

the systematic delays accounted for just eight-and-half-months, well inside the 8-10 month guideline established by the Supreme Court of Canada.

He also found that Turner did not face prejudice as a result of the delay.

“For these reasons, I have concluded that the trial judge erred in

A public aquarium could be the next big attraction for Campbell River.

A local organization – Discovery Passage SeaLife Society – recently purchased a for mer aquarium building in Ucluelet and re-located the facility here.

The educational aquarium would be full of sea life found off our shores and could open as soon as spring 2013.

“We think you will find it’s a tremendous community asset,” Sandra Milligan, director of Discovery Passage SeaLife Society, told council Tuesday night.

“Its goals are to raise awareness about local marine biodiversity and promote respect for the ocean environment.”

The aquarium would be a way to showcase all the creatures living in the waters surrounding Campbell River. Public aquariums typically include touch tanks and a number of educational programs.

It would also be a boon to the local economy, Milligan said.

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre in Sidney (east of Victoria) opened in 2009 and in its first year and half of operation attracted 200,000 visitors. Milligan said

it’s now the third most popular attraction on Vancouver Island.

Seeing an opportunity, the Discovery Passage SeaLife Society scooped up Ucluelet’s original 16 x 48 foot aquarium building which opened in 2004. Ucluelet purchased a new aquarium on June 1, 2012, leaving the old one vacant and that’s when Discovery Passage SeaLife Society stepped in and bought the older facility with the help of the Campbell River Rotary Club.

City staff are expected to present a report to council, sug gesting an ideal spot for the aquarium.

The aquarium could be the first of two big attractions to debut in Campbell River next year. The Rotary Club’s latest project – a suspension bridge over Elk Falls – could be operational as soon as next June.

The building comes with all the pumps and equipment needed to run the aquarium. All the society needs is a place to put the facility.

The aquarium has to be on waterfront property in order to pump salt into the tanks. It also has to be in a visible location with access to water, sewer and parking, Milligan said.

Bottled water offers choice The first two resolutions that require a municipality to become a Blue Community are obvious – recognizing water as a human right and promoting publicly financed, owned and operated water and wastewater We say: Is it services go without saying.

But the third resolution, banning realistic to ban the sale of bottled water in public a product that is facilities and at municipal events, perfectly healthy? wades into the arena of unfair competition, and it also contradicts current municipal policy.

On the former point, is it realistic, or even legal, to ban a product that is perfectly healthy for the people

who choose consume it? Is it government’s place to eliminate a choice for its residents?

One aspect of the recent decision by Nanaimo city council’s decision focused on reducing greenhouse gases. Producing and shipping bottled water does generate greenhouse gases, but under that auspice, should we not ban all vending machine drinks, or any other product that comes wrapped in plastic and is shipped?

For people who prefer not to drink out of public fountains, and many don’t, bottled water provides an alternative to fountain water and sugary drinks like pop and juice. Which brings us to the city’s Healthy Choices policy, established in 2008. That

policy aimed to provide more healthy choices for people purchasing products at city facilities and concessions in an effort to promote activity and good health.

By banning the sale of bottled water, people using city facilities now must choose between drinking fountains and sugary drinks, or they have to bring their own water, likely bottled water from another vendor.

There is no real reason to ban bottled water.

Municipalities have every opportunity to promote their own water services without washing away people’s choice.

No place for horse pucky For once let’s give a break to dog owners and shift the focus to our equestrian friends. While on a leisurely Sunday bike ride up the ERT, I had the pleasure of encountering not one, two or three but four massive piles of horse dung placed ceremoniously in the middle of the path. People can get after dog owners all they like (I am not one) for not picking up after their furry friends but last time I checked, trail etiquette and common sense (clearly lacking in today’s society) dictates that if your animal leaves a mess you clean it up. It boggles my mind how someone riding an animal as large as a horse could not notice that their animal has left a cubic foot of poop in four different places along the trail. This is not a dirt path but a heavily used pavement road/trail. Families walk along the ERT, runners run, bikers bike and evidently horses now take the liberty of pooping there too. I find this unacceptable and whomever is responsible for the horse (or horses) that did this should feel shame. A dog walker would be swiftly chided for not picking up after their pet. Please, let’s all show common courtesy to others and clean up after ourselves.

Who says we never write any ‘good news’ stories?

There’s a comment reporters hear often: “Why don’t you write any GOOD news stories?” readers ask…over and over again.

They have a point, but I’m quick to fire back: “We do, you just don’t read them.”

Our website numbers bear out that news nugget: Most readers gobble up the bad news and a lot of the good news stories get passed over.

I don’t know exactly why, but, as I always say, readers are smart people and they’ll make up their own minds on the whys and what-fors.

But, you know, I am delighted when I’m wrong. There are good news stories which readers really take a liking to, so I thought I’d provide some

follow-ups on three recent stories I wrote. (Okay, so two are good news stories, but the third one has a nice ending. Heck, they all have happy endings).

In March I wrote a feature about 16-year-old Rory Shade. He’s a special young man who has two younger siblings, and all three have a highfunctioning degree of autism.

What makes Rory particularly special is his voice. He’s one of those rare natural countertenors and he’s been working hard on his career goal to become an opera singer.

Well, the recent good news is Rory has saved enough money to attend the Victoria Conservatory of Music this summer, and he’s been accepted after submitting a sample CD and

resume.

Here’s hoping we see Rory on the big stage one day.

Two stories in our June 1 edition also received plenty of attention.

Let’s start with the not-so-good-story first.

Joan Knowler had e-mailed me a photo of herself, in her wheelchair, trying to get into her car. The problem was, the door was blocked by a commercial truck which had straddled the dividing line as the driver somehow failed to notice the big blue and white sign denoting a space for drivers with disabilities.

Joan runs into this problem all the time – everywhere – and thought a little public education was needed, especially during Access Awareness

Week.

Now, in my story, I never mentioned the truck belongs to Finning which was clearly visible on the back of the truck. But someone from Finning did notice the story and called Joan to offer an apology.

Joan was grateful for the call and hopes other drivers will learn to be more courteous.

The third and final story brought in a lot of positive comments. It was about Steve Harding of Campbell River rescuing a bald eagle which had become ensnared in line and was hanging upside down in a tree.

They took the bird to the centre in Merville where it fully recovered which is great because a lot of wounded birds don’t survive.

Teachers bitter contract dispute may end

The contract dispute between B.C. teachers and the provincial government may come to an end tonight after both parties reached a tentative agreement earlier this week.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation signed an agreement-in-committee with the government’s barg aining agent, the BC Public School Employers’

Association late Tuesday night after more than a year of contract negotiations. Teachers across the province cast ballots Wednesday through to today and results of the ratification vote are expected to be announced this evening – the last day of the school year.

Full details of the tentative deal have not been disclosed but

Minister of Education George Abbott said the agreement “sets out improved language to manage leave positions, and is consistent with the government’s net zero mandate.�

The agreement is good until June 30, 2013. Abbott praised t h e g o ve r n m e n t ’s appointed mediator for bringing the two sides together.

“Under Dr. Charles Ja go’s guidance, the parties worked extremely hard and made pro g ress on many important issues,� Abbott said in a prepared statement. “We are pleased that mediation has resulted in a tentative Memorandum of Settlement between the British Columbia Public School Employ-

ers’ Association and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation.�

People are taking serious risks if they allow BC Hydro to install a smart meter on their home, says the head of a local coalition to put a stop to the devices.

John War n spoke to city council Tuesday night and warned that smart meters can destroy appliances in the home, are a health threat because of the emissions they emit, and a fire hazard.

A Tsawwassen man claims the installation of his smart meter blew a fuse and ruined his oven while Warn noted a woman in

Nanaimo had just had a smart meter installed when it blew up and caught fire.

“There is a high risk of fires being started by smart meters,” Warn said. “They’re m a nu f a c t u re d o f f shore. I don’t like those odds.”

Warn said the radiation the smart meters emit when sending signals to BC Hydro could be harmful to a person’s health and the radio waves can interfere with other signals in the household.

T h e wo r s t p a r t , according to Warn, is British Columbians are not being given a choice to opt out.

“We’re being forced to accept something in our homes that’s been classified as a class 2B carcinogen – that scares me,” War n said. “There are more unknowns than knowns when it comes to the long-term affects. Personally, I’d prefer to not be one of the guinea pigs if I don’t have to.”

BC Hydro has already installed 1.3 million smart meters across the province and is set to begin installation in Campbell River next

month.

Ted Olynyk, spokesperson for BC Hydro, said the smart meters have several benefits including cutting down on the length of power outages and saving consumers money.

The devices, which use Wi-Fi, send a signal to BC Hydro in the event of a power outage, expediting Hydro’s response time.

Although rates will not go down, the power corporation says the devices will show customers their consumption and consumers can adjust to save themselves money.

The smart meters will also eliminate the need for meter readers

to come onto people’s property, as the devices can transmit a customer’s consumption directly to BC Hydro.

Olynyk said the criticism being heaped upon smart meters is not warranted.

“The Internet is a great place for information but not all of it is correct information,” he said. “There’s misinfor mation out there that BC Hydro will know who you’re having over for dinner...because of smart meters.”

As for the smart meters being a health hazard, Olynyk said

Nanaimo, Parksville, Gold River, Surrey and Burnaby.

The moratorium asks BC Hydro to temporarily hold off on installing the smart meters.

“They have been coming in but we feel we can force the issue and call for a moratorium,” Warn said.

Olynyk confir med a person can also put a sign on their meter asking BC Hydro to delay installation of the smart meter, however, Hydro has yet to determine a long-term plan for customers who refuse the smart meter.

My pet is not acting normal lately. Should I watch him, or call the vet?

Contributed by: Dr. Nast Campbell River Veterinary Hospital One thing is for sure - each animal is an individual. While there are norms for each species, age, breed, and so on, each animal will have their own set of "normal" parameters and behaviours. If you feel that your pet is not him or

herself, you’re probably right! You know your pet better than anyone else.

But what if he’s not really "sick" either; should you check in with the vet anyway?

The short answer is yes, even if it is just a phone call to

your vet to touch base. Animals can be very good at hiding illness until the problem is advanced. Your vet can assess vital signs, body temperature, heart rate/rhythm, and will ask you questions about your pet's habits or recent

behaviours that will hopefully aid in ďŹ nding out why your pet is not acting as they normally do.

Your veterinarian may suggest some lab work (blood, urine, stool, x-rays) to further investigate what may be going on. It

may be something simple, it may be an early indicator of something serious.

Early detection and prevention is always the best - both for your pet's health and ultimately for the cost of treatment.

The "wait and see" approach is OK for

perhaps a day if your pet is not in pain, still eating, able to relieve themselves normally, etc., but even so, more than 24 hours of being lethargic or "depressed" warrants at least a phone call to your veterinarian to set

up a visit.

If your pet is in pain, won't eat, can't urinate, experiencing bouts of vomiting and/or diarrhea, please call your vet as soon as possible.

These situations can be (or become) quite serious in a short period of time.

A hot spot is a localized area of skin inammation and infection. The infection can be superďŹ cial or deep.

Other common names for this condition include: moist dermatitis, pyotraumatic dermatitis, and acute moist dermatitis.

Broken down, "pyo-" refers to "pus", "-traumatic" refers to self-inicted trauma of biting, licking, scratching, and so on, and "dermatitis" means inammation of the skin. These can happen at any time of year, but we certainly

These common skin lesions are usually caused (and made worse) by biting, licking, or scratching. The important thing for successful long term treatment of a hot spot is to ďŹ nd the underlying cause to break the cycle of continued skin trauma and resulting inammation.

Redness, oozing, pain, and itchiness are hallmark signs. Hair loss is commonly present and there may be a bad odor associated with the hot spot. Sometimes hair can mat over the

lesion, obscuring the size and degree of the problem.

These lesions can appear suddenly, and grow rapidly in size.

It is common for an owner to notice a small area of inamed skin in the morning (perhaps an inch or couple centimeters in diameter) and come home from work to be met with a large area the size of the palm of a hand. The dog is usually highly agitated, and will not leave the area alone.

Some dogs will even growl or snap if the area is touched.

There is usually an inciting factor to initiate the extreme

licking and scratching behavior. Dogs that swim seem to be at risk for hot spots, but there are other causes. Look for eas, mites, or other external parasites, an insect sting or bite, allergies, or injury (skin wound, scrape, etc.). Some animals have been known to "start" a hot spot out of boredom, pain from a previous injury, or stressrelated psychological problems.

Hot spots usually mean a trip to the veterinarian to clean up the wound, treat the infection, and search for an underlying cause.

Calm frightened felines and fearful Fidos Fireworks can be a wonder to behold... for humans. Pets, however, may not be so enamored with the booms, crashes and bumps in the night.

Dogs, cats, even small rodents often become creatures of habit. They like knowing they are secure and what's to come next. Surprises and extraordinary events can put pets on edge.

Loud noises often spook pets. Everything from noisy trucks to thunderstorms to lowying airplanes may scare a pet, possibly leading to unpredictable behavior. Summer can induce anxiety in pets, especially when people celebrate with ďŹ reworks and boisterous parties.

Many cats and dogs will try to hide when they hear ďŹ reworks or

other loud noises. Pet parents can play off of this behavior and create safe sanctuaries to which their pets can retreat to ride out the "rockets' red glare and bombs bursting in air."

The following are a few tips to reduce pet anxiety when night falls and ďŹ reworks start going off. s Set up a comforting den. If your dog or cat sleeps in a crate, cage

or a special nook in the house, use this area to establish a safe haven.

Put comfortable pillows or mats on the oor and envelop the cage or spot with blankets.

These items will help mask the sights and sounds of outdoors. Put in familiar toys or even one of your shirts to establish familiar and comforting scents. s Keep the windows closed and the drapes

However, many pets have very good hearing, so some of the louder ďŹ reworks might still be audible. s Put on soothing music. Throw on a show or songs that have

This, too, will help mask the unpredictable sounds of ďŹ reworks. s Walk the pet in early evening. Make sure you walk your dog prior to sunset to reduce the likelihood of getting caught outdoors with ďŹ reworks being set off.

If pets are allowed to roam in the yard, bring them inside before the sun sets. s $ONgT PUNISH THE PET Stressed pets may soil indoors, cower, fail to respond to commands, or engage in destructive behavior. It is important not to admonish the pet simply because he or she is scared. Doing so may only make the situation worse. s $ONgT COMFORT THE pet, either. It may be tempting to sit and

cuddle a dog or cat and reassure him that everything will be alright. This fawning over the pet may only help to reinforce negative behavior and the pet's inability to overcome the fears himself. s Talk to the vet. If fears are paralyzing your pet, talk to the veterinarian to see if behavior therapy or short-term medication use may help assuage

fears.

Some vets prescribe a mild tranquilizer to help pets get through speciďŹ c ďŹ reworks displays.

Because fear can cause skittishness, many pets end up running away from home during summer ďŹ reworks displays. It is imperative to keep identiďŹ cation on your pets at all times so they can be returned promptly if found.

Campbell River Living Willow Point garden acts as outdoor lab for NIC students

andra Milligan’s unique outdoor teaching lab will be among the 10 gardens featured on the upcoming Campbell River Garden and Art Tour July 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The self-guided Garden and Art Tour features 10 beautiful gardens from north Campbell River to Black Creek and will also feature artists at work on most of the properties.

Visitors on the tour will enjoy seeing how Milligan, who teaches universitylevel biology at North Island College, uses her food and flower garden to instruct her students about plant anatomy and physiology. Milligan began her Willow Point-area garden around seven years ago and it has since grown into a large endeavor that provides food and fun for her family as well as a wonderful opportunity to teach her students. “I use the garden as a lab and a teaching tool,� Milligan said. “A field trip to the garden is a regular part of the curriculum. “The students do a scavenger hunt to find different plant parts

The library offers two levels of summer reading programs: ‘Summer Reading Club’ for Kindergarten to Grade 7 and ‘Read to Me’ for preschoolers and those who cannot yet read independently.

The Summer Reading Club provides elementary school children with incentives to make reading an integral part of their holiday and encourages them to practice and improve their reading

skills while school is out.

Strange…But True is the theme for this year’s program, and each week has a different theme featuring titles that will expose young readers to different genres – science fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, mystery, adventure, poetry, folk and fairytales, jokes, humour, and more.

Children who sign up receive a fun registration package with a bookmark, stickers, trinkets, and a reading record book in which they are encouraged to keep track of the books they have read.

Kids can also attend interesting programs at their local library.

Children registering at the Campbell River Branch will receive a list of programs scheduled throughout the summer in their registration package.

Kids can learn to draw this summer Kids will have a chance to explore their artistic eye at Sybil Andrews’ cottage this summer.

The City of Campbell River Recreation Department is offering learn to draw courses that introduce children to a very simple, easy method of continuous line drawing. Learn to Draw is a great opportunity for children to learn how to successfully draw everyday objects, and people. No previous experience is required; just a curiosity to explore with your eyes!

The Learn to Draw instructor is Cindy Longland, who has diplomas in fine arts as well as graphic design and illustration and continues to share her talents with the community teaching both children and adults classes for the City’s recreation department.

Students will draw groupings of everyday objects, and even their fellow students, using a single light source to observe light and shadow.

Simple watercolour/acrylic washes of colour and felt pen will be applied to these drawings.

Later in the week, children will move outdoors to apply this same line drawing method to capture the many details surrounding the beach cottage and the shoreline landscape.

Christelle Smit is a dance examiner for the Association of International Dance Teachers.

She started her examining tour in Las Vegas at the begining of June, then traveled to Vancouver where she joined a second examiner, Thelma Dancig from Johannesburg, South Africa, and both examiners examined Shannon

A large property between Tyee Plaza and McDonald’s will soon be home to a new, six-storey building.

Berwick Retirement Communities is planning to build a 123-unit retirement housing complex and is eying a January opening date.

The Campbell River facility would be the company’s sixth, joining units in Kamloops, Comox, Nanaimo, and two in Victoria.

“We’re looking forward to building in C a m p b e l l R ive r, ” said William Bomhof, who represented Berwick in a delegation to council Tuesday night. “We think we have a good piece of property.”

The site of the future Berwick facility is a downtown waterfront piece of land – actually two lots – on the corner of 16th Avenue

and Roberts’ Reach.

Berwick plans to build a mix of bachelor, one and twobedroom units with a large dining room, l i b r a r y, e x e r c i s e room, theatre, patio and g ardens. The facility will include 62 underground parking spaces and will boast

landscaping around the perimeter of the building as well as in a courtyard in the centre of the facility.

Berwick’s application also includes a roof-top patio for residents, a recreation area with two lawn bowling pitches, as well as private bal-

conies in addition to communal outdoor space.

The facility will be clad with a mix of wood, concrete board and stone with a varied colour scheme, balconies and windows along the front of the building. Access to the facility will be via 16th

Avenue.

Berwick’s roots trace back to 1989 when it opened Berwick House in Victoria.

Isy Shillito April 26, 1932 – June 23, 2012 It is with sad hearts and a million wonderful memories that we said goodbye to our beloved Wife, Mom and Nana, Isy (Isabella Brown) Shillito.

Isy is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Gus Shillito, and three of her four children, Marci (Marc) Fairgray, Bill (Diana) Shillito and Jeani (Glenn) Ordano. Isy was pre-deceased by her daughter Kathi Baskin, and is survived by Kathi's husband Murray. Nana will also be forever loved and missed by her 11 grandchildren Bobby Schafer (Chris Barker), Jon Schafer (Rachel), Ryan Baskin, Lacie Ordano (Mike Jenkins), Elisa (Levi) Welychko, Alana Baskin (Jeff), Marlie (Brad) Cleverley, Marissa Shillito (Marc), Britany Shillito (Cory), Troy Ordano (Geena), Jessica Shillito, and the light of her last years, her precious great grand-daughter Taryn Jenkins.

Isy was born, raised and lived her life in Campbell River. She was the daughter of George and Martha Brown and granddaughter of William and Hannah Storie, the original pioneer settlers of Stories Beach. She is survived by her only brother George Brown, sister-in-law Carol and their family.

Rick was a practical, unassuming and hard working man who found his greatest joy in his family. He was retired two years from his career as a Marine Engineer with BC Ferries where he had many friends. Whether working in the yard with his little dog at his side or tinkering in his shop, he was always ready to respond to a request for help from family, friends and neighbours. He touched the lives of so many who are richer for having known him. Service to be announced at a later date.

RONEY, Robert (Bob) February 28, 1932 – June 22, 2012 Bob passed away peacefully with his children by his side.

Bob is survived by his son Cam Roney, his wife Cindy and granddaughter Kai, his daughter Jane Hilchey and her husband Jim. Bob was born in Saskatchewan but moved to Campbell River as a young man, where he met and married Betty-Ray Crawford and started a family.

Bob was a business man and did many things in his life, from driving a taxi cab to owning Roney's Taxi. He also worked at the pulp mill, owned a restaurant and a boat rental where his son learned to be a ďŹ shing guide and found his love for the water. As well as being an auctioneer, he also owned the bargain house and pop shoppe. He was a founding member of the C.R. Guides Association.

He loved Campbell River and was involved with its growth in many ways. At one point he was the president of the Kinsmen Club, also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a clown in many parades as a Shriner.

He spent the last year of his life at Ironwood Place where he was very happy with the caring staff and having old friends to visit with.

Bob and his family are very fortunate and grateful he has such an amazing friend as Brian Kyle who was always there to help in any way he could and kept a smile on his face and laughter in his heart.

Utilizing the WorkSafe BC “Cable Yarding Systems� and “Grapple Yarder and Supersnorkel� Handbooks as a guide, the Program is designed to provide entry level logging skills. Using a combination of classroom instruction and hands on training at an instructional logging site, the Instructors will teach the students the foundation skills of safety, environmental awareness, and job skills, necessary to be successful in both Highlead Tower and Grapple Yarding settings.

The Program will be taught at the Company’s Englewood Forest Operation, located 1.5 hours north of Campbell River and 1 hour south of Port McNeill. The Instructors will be responsible to assist with ďŹ nalizing the Program’s curriculum and delivery of the 2012 pilot project and the planned 2013 Program (three 7-week programs, May to October).

Individuals interested in this opportunity must have extensive knowledge and experience on the operational side of the logging industry and ideally have worked as a “hooktender� during that time. Helipad to improve safety response on Cortes A donation of $3,180 from BC Hydro will help the Cortes Island Firefighting Association build a new helipad.

“The addition of a helipad will help improve safety and reli-

ability on Cortes Island, ensuring that our customers receive the services they need,” said Ted Olynyk, spokesperson for BC Hydro.

There is currently no helicopter access to the north end of Cortes

Island. The firefighting association is installing a helipad next to Fire Hall #2 in Whaletown.

Once complete, it will mainly be used for emergency services (ambulance, RCMP, etc.) but will also be made

available to BC Hydro for delivering crews and equipment when needed.

Scott McLean, a BC Hydro field manager at the Campbell River District Office, recalled a storm that occurred

on Christmas Eve 2010.

The crew was able to restore power more quickly on Christmas morning thanks to the existing helipad, which allowed the crew to complete a heli-patrol and then start the

applicable isolation of the circuit, while the second crew travelled over with materials and trucks.

“In order to travel to Cortes from Campbell River, the crew needs to take two separate fer-

ries, which takes a couple hours, and during a storm the ferries are frequently shut down,” said McLean. “...the additional helipad gives us another option of where to land a helicopter to offload crews.”
