Pranking students got a bum rap, parents complain

By Kevin Diakiw The parents of eight boys who streaked through Cloverdale’s Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary say their kids faced punishment exceeding their crime.

On June 14 during the lunch hour, the eight senior students dropped their clothes and ran through the school naked. Such shenanigans, according to some parents, have become a traditional graduation prank at the school.

Principal Allan Buggie, who has been at the school for two years, is not turning the other cheek, and suspended the stu-

dents for three days and told them they were not allowed to show up to the cap-and-gown Grade 12 commencement ceremonies.

One of the streakers, Dwight Lilly,17, and his mother Debby are not happy with the punishment meted out by the school principal.

“He just said his mind is made up. It’s not changing, and that’s the way it’s going to be,” Lilly said. “He said there are no pranks at his school.”

She said the consequences represent a new level of punishment for the offense.

“My oldest son did it three

years ago,” Lilly said, adding that he received a three-day suspension and “that was it.”

There is one boy who won a scholarship, but won’t have the honour of receiving it at commencement, Lilly added.

Surrey School District spokesperson Doug Strachan said there’s no specific district policy regarding graduation pranks, but there are rules of conduct for staff and students.

He said schools set out clear expectations about grad pranks, because Surrey, as in other districts, has had incidences where the pranks have been harmful.

“I can tell you, commence-

ments have been the stakes at other schools where pranks have occurred,” Strachan said.

“Certainly having seniors streak through a school where there are also 13-year-old girls in hallways, I’m sure there would be students and parents at that grade level that would have concerns about that,” Strachan said.

Lilly said there are parents whose kids weren’t involved who will be passing on the commencement out of protest.

Privatized booze will cost consumers more, union says B.C.’s Craft Beer Association also predicts cost of beer could rise by $1 a six-pack

By Miranda Gathercole and Frank Bucholtz Privatizing the Liquor Distribution Branch would not only cause the province to lose millions of dollars in revenue, it would also drive up liquor prices for consumers, according to the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union.

Nearly 40 union members armed with petitions circled the Cascades Casino parking lot last week, collecting signatures to “stop the Liquor Distribution Branch sell-off.”

They were also hoping to catch the eye of Rich Coleman, minister responsible for the LDB, who was at the casino June 19 to speak to the annual meeting of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce. “(The LDB) is a public asset that has served the public for decades,” said Evan Stewart, communications officer for the BCGEU. “Last year alone it produced in the region of $890 million of profit, and that’s provincial revenue that goes into building schools, hospitals and highways and looking after seniors.”

Since the privatization plan was announced in the budget speech in February, there has been no public consultation nor a business case presented to justify the sale, Stewart said.

He also believes this will cause prices to increase for consumers.

“I think British Columbians need to be aware that the system has worked for decades (and) has provided consistent pricing province wide.

If you go into a liquor store in East Vancouver, right by the warehouse, or if you go to a liquor store in Fort St. John, the prices are the same,” he said.

“There’s certainly no assurance that if the warehouse and distribution service is privatized we’re going to have consistent, province-wide pricing. And I think there is a very real possibility that this privatization is going to drive up costs for consumers.”

Matt Phillips of Victoria’s Phillips Brewing Company, also a member the Craft Beer Association of B.C., has predicted that privatization could add between 75 cents to $1 on the cost of a six-pack of beer, Stewart said.

with the service that LDB provides, and they are concerned that privatizing is going to drive up their costs,” he said.

Inside the building, Coleman did not address any liquor-related issues in his speech. However, he was asked a question about the privatization by a chamber member.

Asked why no business case had been prepared in advance of the Request for Proposals (RFP) that calls for responses from the private sector by June 30, Coleman said that the government instead did an analysis.

“What we have here is an old warehouse that is not very efficient. We could either go build a new warehouse or see if someone in the private sector wanted to come in

with a proposal.

“We need to look to efficiencies, and the best way is to go to the private sector,” he said.

He also emphasized that part of the RFP requires that existing employees do not lose their jobs and remain as members of the union.

Coleman said the final decision on the privatization RFP will be made by a panel of civil servants and not by politicians, “and if there is no savings to consumers, we won’t do the deal.”

When he said that “we (government) do not usually run businesses very well,” the questioner responded “It’s odd that government would say it’s not doing a great job.”

“Both are going to suffer.”

A destination casino would also threaten any future expansion of the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, he warned.

“The city has intended to expand the fairgrounds consider-

ably as well,” MacMillan said.

The Cloverdale business groups backed Fraser Downs’ initial bid to expand the racetrack into a casino, believing the gaming expansion was critical in order to save harness racing, an industry that employs hundreds of people locally, and thousands across the Fraser Valley and beyond.

The SBOT’s reaction would appear to be at odds with Cloverdale’s business community.

Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, said the board was pleased to hear the announcement.

“If they knew that the Cloverdale one was anxious to progress into a much larger casino, they may not have made the decision that they did,” MacMillan said.

New book recalls ‘Grandpa’s War’ RAF bomb-aimer’s WWII memoir has now been made available to a wider audience To the editor, I am writing on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy, in which members of the Association’s Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program help preserve and commemorate Canada’s military heritage by teaching others about the important sacrifices of our fallen soldiers and veterans.

Of the more than 45,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in the Second World War, 10,000 were in Bomber Command – one of the most dangerous occupations of the war.

On June 28, the Queen will be unveiling the Royal Air Force Bomber Command Me-

morial in central London, UK. To mark the unveiling, The War Amps is releasing a memoir in its Canadian Military Heritage Series called Grandpa’s War in Bomber Command, a personal account of the experiences of the late Jack W. Singer.

As well, members of Operation Legacy will be donating copies of the memoir to their local libraries.

Born and raised in Toronto, Singer joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at age 19 and served as a bomb-aimer with No. 9 Squadron, RAF. He wrote this memoir for his grandchildren

Climb aboard a piece of living maritime history this weekend, when Washington State’s Hawaiian Chieftain sails into port at Steveston.

Free walk-on tours are available June 29 to July 1 as part of the Ship-to-Shore, at Imperial Landing.

The ship will also take passengers on three-hour public sails daily. The Hawaiian Chieftain is a fullsize, steel-hulled topsail ketch built to look like a typical 19th century merchant ship.

Launched in 1988 at Lahaina, Hawaii, she is a companion to the Lady Washington, currently undergoing a hull restoration project and not on tour.

Both are manned by volunteer and paid crew members who don authentic naval garb, demonstrate the intricacies and acrobatics involved in tall ship handling, use authentic terminology and regale passengers with traditional sea shanties and lore.

By Jennifer Lang Some familiar names on the West Coast music landscape are coming to Cloverdale July 1 for the free Canada Day celebration at Millennium Amphitheatre.

The High Bar Gang has been called a “roots supergroup” featuring some of Vancouver’s finest musicians who have come together to perform gospel and bluegrass music.

With such legendary performers and solo artists as Barney Bentall, Shari Ulrich (UHF), singer-songwriter Angela Harris, Wendy Bird (Los Durangos) and others, it’s well-nigh impossible to disagree.

Lacrosse players ascend to Burnaby Mountain Elementary and high school players chosen for lacrosse program

By Jennifer Lang Several Cloverdale lacrosse players have been chosen to play with the Burnaby Mountain Selects this summer.

Hazelgrove Elementary’s Nick Bachmeier, Taylor Dudlets from Adams Road Elementary, and Ty Ewen of George Greenaway Elementary are joining the Selects U13 Elite team – one of five travel teams fielded by the lacrosse development program.

The Selects Elite touring model follows a similar template to a university lacrosse program, and it’s designed to train players in a

high-performance environment.

The Burnaby Mountain Selects have also announced that Derek Van Yperen of Clayton Heights Secondary is on the boy’s U15 Elite team.

Wyatt Kinna of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is on the Boy’s Junior Elite team.

Both the Boys U13 and U15 elite teams were headed to Denver, Colorado, this week for a Denver Pioneers Team Camp June 21-24. The camp is hosted

by Hall of Fame coach Bill Tierney and the DU men’s lacrosse coaching staff.

Small raise for school trustees

Surrey school trustees will receive about $560 per year more after the majority voted themselves a raise last week.

The seven members of the Surrey Board of Education will now receive an annual base rate of $30,400, with the chairperson getting an additional $3,000 per year and the vice-chair $1,500.

Trustee Charlene Dobie voted against the pay raise. Trustees Reni Masi and Pam Glass were absent.

The increase is in line with the 1.9 per cent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Vancouver in the past year.

The Surrey board’s wages now total $217,300 – less than Coquitlam and Vancouver, which have nine elected trustees apiece – despite Surrey’s much higher student enrolment.

Trustee honorariums are reviewed annually. Surrey trustees got a 2.6 per cent raise last year.

Eighty-seven per cent of Surrey’s dollars, said Trustee Terry Allen, who chairs the budget committee, is allocated to classrooms and instruction.

Two per cent is spent on administration, while the rest goes to maintenance and transportation.

The budget shows number of support staff district-wide is slated to rise by seven, while there will be two fewer principals.

Surrey is expecting 70,440 students – up about 150 from this year – in September, the most kids of any district in the province.

While some school boards in B.C. are struggling to submit balanced budgets, which is required by law, Surrey has managed to balance the books thanks to one-time savings during the current year on things such as snow clearing and utilities, as well as higher-than-budgeted revenues.

Trustees in Cowichan have voted to submit a deficit budget to government to demonstrate how much they say is truly needed to run that district.

Minister of Education George Abbott has threatened to fire the trustees if they do so. All boards in B.C. must submit their budgets by June 30.

Final adjustments to Surrey’s budget may be made after Sept. 30, when actual student numbers are tallied.

By Jennifer Lang Now that’s what you call a team effort: thanks to another successful charity golf tournament, a realty company with branches across Surrey and the Fraser Valley, has been able to donate $42,000 to Canuck Place.

The 11th Annual HomeLife Charity Golf Classic, held at Northview Golf Course May 25, drew a soldout field of golfers, resulting in a win for the families served by Canuck Place, Rick Dubord, president of HomeLife Realty Services B.C., said.

The event was a team effort involving volunteers, sponsors, Canuck alumni and golfers.

“It’s not just the money that’s important,” he added, “it’s the awareness of the need for the services provided by Canuck Place.”

To meet growing needs, Canuck Place is building a hospice in Abbotsford. The 30,000 square-foot facility will have 10 beds, and five family suites, essentially doubling the capacity of Canuck Place, and extending services to families in the Fraser Valley and B.C. Interior.

A long swim, and an even longer journey

By Jennifer Lang Veteran Cloverdale paramedic Will Rogers arrived at the Tsawwassen shoreline bright and early on Sunday June 24 to begin the first leg of his 2012 Million Dollar Journey.

Rogers, a 53-year-old father of three, swam the 22-kilometres from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal to Sturdies Bay on Galiano Island in support of the Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey (SAS).

The society supports women and victimized youth who are looking for a way out of the sex trade industry. It runs safe homes, provides schooling and life skills training, and helps sexually exploited teens rebuild their lives by boosting their self esteem and offering practical life and occupational skills training.

The waters looked calm and the dawn skies were clear as Rogers donned a full wet suit for the journey.

“This is the fourth time I’ve done this. I always end up here,” he said, referring to the concrete boat launch on the causeway leading to the ferry.

“We start on the other side [Galiano] at 5:30 in the morning and end up here at 3 o’clock.

This year we’re doing it the other way.”

He says as he swims the distance, he doesn’t think about how deep the water is. His route took him through Active Pass, the narrow channel between two Gulf Islands that is also along the ferry route. He expected passengers would be able to see him from deck. He was also hoping to spot wildlife such as orcas along the way.

ney is a 440-kilometre bike ride that will take him from Penticton to Victoria this weekend, June 30 to July 1.

He’ll then run from Penticton to Victoria on the final leg, a 500-kilometre run he plans to complete July 9 to 22.

Rogers says his immediate goal is to sign up a minimum of 10,000 individuals for a commitment of

$20 a month. Over two years this would put $5 million dollars in a foundation account that could generate enough equity to run SAS on an ongoing basis, with the goal to expand the operation to another community.

Also survived by long time family friends Rita Robinson, Gail (George Fisher), Karen (Walter Wagner) and their families, along with other long time friends and also much loved relatives in Britain and throughout Canada.
