A final chapter for ADSS Class of 2012 prepares to send off old high school in style ‘I feel like this class is different from other classes. Maybe we are not the most academic class, but (we) have changed a lot.’

eing the last graduating class at Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS) could be like a funeral, but really it’s more like a wake.

“It’s like a funeral in a way, a kind of mourning,” says Derrick Van Viegen, master of ceremonies for this year’s graduation ceremonies. “But it’s a celebration too. It’s going to be explosive.”

Ryan Hart, valedictorian and co-chair of the grad committee, agrees.

“We want it to be the best, but we also want to remember the past with respect.”

The 267 graduates of the ADSS Class of 2012 hope to do just that at their ceremonies on Friday, June 29.

They are the last class to graduate at ADSS, as the school officially closes this summer. In the fall, students will head to the class at the new school erected near 10th Avenue and Roger Street.

But there are no hard feelings for the grads who won’t attend the new school.

“We were either going to be the first grad class in the new school or the last one in the old school,” says Hart. “This is better, because we can say goodbye.”

Van Viegen is a little disappointed.

“My sister is going to the new school. Yeah, I feel a little gypped,” he laughs. But he adds that life at ADSS hasn’t been about the physical building.

“I would describe the four years as a great change,” says Van Viegen. “Really new and really remarkable. You become a part of the community. The students, the teachers, the kindness. It is exciting now because we are becoming a part of a memory. I have never felt this good … it’s very cool.”

Hart agrees.

“High school has been an ongoing process, each year builds and you get the excitement,” says Hart.

“This year has been the best year.

We are not just ending high school, we are ending a part of life … it’s over, now what? That’s exciting.”

Hart says the Class of 2012 is special.

“I feel like this class is different from other classes,” says Hart.

“Maybe we are not the most academic class, but (we) have changed a lot,” he says of his classmates.

“I think a lot of them are going to go far. Each step they take is going to take them to new places.”

Van Viegen says the class has enjoyed its high school years.

“We’re quite a rowdy bunch but that’s a good thing,” says Van Viegen.

“They are enjoying their life.

In my grad year I have made new friends. It is amazing how close you get to your classmates. Now it’s

hard to imagine not seeing these people again.”

Those people include the staff at ADSS, says Hart.

“When you are graduating, you have fun with the teachers. They know you and they want to work with you,” says Hart.

“They give you that help if you need it. I like how the teachers prepare you. They want to send out the best they can.”

Van Viegen adds, “it’s part of that community feel. We are in it together.”

As their own high school careers come to a close, the boys have some advice for those who will come after them.

“Have fun, it’s going to go by fast,” counsels Hart. “Of course go to classes; you have to pass them.

But have fun.”

Van Viegen agrees.

“Have fun with it. It is serious, but you are graduating. It’s really big, so make it big.”

One of the best ways to enjoy your school years? Get involved.

“It’s so fun to get involved,” says Van Viegen. “I have met new people this year and have stronger bonds.”

Hart adds, “You get to know people better and have great experiences.”

The theme for this year’s graduating ceremony is Hollywood, complete with a red carpet and spotlights to highlight every grad.

Hart is practicing his speech every day.

“I want to recognize the old and the years of ADSS,” says Hart.

“But also the bright and new future ahead for the school and especially the grads.”

People who need a hot meal from the Kuu-us Crisis Line outreach program on Saturdays will have to continue eating outside—at least for now.

Flanked by more than 25 supporters, Kuu-us official Petra Barnfield addressed council, reminding Mayor John Douglas of his campaign platform, that stated

council has a moral duty to assist and support the Valley’s needy in order to overcome their challenges.

Last month, Kuu-us had written to council asking for a meeting to discuss using city facilities to host the outreach program on Saturdays. Instead of accepting or declining Kuu-us’ request, council got into a debate about the merits of the initiative, then filed the letter without a

On Monday, Barnfield reiterated the need for a city facility with a kitchen so hot meals could be served to needy clients, 510 of which were served last year.

Presently, the program serves meals to people rain or shine on Saturday nights outside of the video store on Third Avenue and Mar Street.

The program wouldn’t infringe on city facility rentals, Barnfield said, and Kuu-us officials are willing to move from space to space.

Using city facilities was identified in a survey of program clients, who said they wanted something central and nondenominational, she added.

The outreach program fills a service gap by operating on Saturdays when other agencies are closed on weekends.

Kuu-us may be requesting the space but it’s for the benefit of the people it

serves, an emotional executive director Elia Nicholson said.

“These people are human beings. They want to have a voice because they said the city won’t listen,” she said. “You don’t think they mean anything. They mean everything.”

Coun. Hira Chopra asked Barnfield who would be responsible for security and cleanup at a facility.

“If there’s no extra charges to the city I will support you,” Chopra said. “If it costs extra then you pay.”

The supporters replied “We will,” in unison.

Kuu-us is part of the Community Stakeholders Initiative To End Homelessness, said Coun. Cindy Solda.

CSI is helping allocate $300,000 given to the AlberniClayoquot Regional District from the Vancouver Island Health Authority for homeless initiatives.

to become public enemy No. 1 for this,” she said. “Have you applied?”

Nicholson replied that Kuu-us doesn’t fit the criteria for the money, which is to be used for housing and landlord-tenant

related issues.

Solda further asked why Kuu-us can’t coordinate space with other social agencies or seek sponsorship from service groups.

“We’re going to open Pandora’s Box to other agencies,” she

said.

Barnfield replied that direction was taken from the program survey, which was specific about the space.

Coun. Wendy Kerr inquired about Gyro Youth Centre.

Parks and recreation director Scott Kenny replied that it’s used on Saturdays for the Nights Alive program but that space may be available during the summer.

Coordinating space at other facilities would be a challenge, as they are 70 per cent booked for the remainder of the year.

Several other nonprofits pay to use the facilities, he added.

Douglas steered the matter into Kenny’s hands, saying that further discussion should take place, with the results being brought back to council.

The B.C. and federal governments have relaxed some of the rules for student loan repayment, part of an integrated loan program in effect starting July 1.

The new repayment assistance plan allows for smaller payments for lower-income students, based on

income, number of dependent children and the amount of student debt owed.

The program extends the repayment time and may allow forgiveness of the original loan amount.

A single parent with two children and an average annual income of $30,000 would see the minimum interest payment on a $20,000

student loan decrease from $228 to zero.

A student couple with two children, combined income of $50,000 and combined loans totalling $40,000 would see their minimum payments fall from $485 to $87.

B.C. student loans given out before Aug. 1, 2011 are automatically moved to the new national student loan system.

Teachers, government reach tentative deal WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni teachers will likely support an agreement reached between the provincial government and British Columbia Teachers Federation, Alberni District Teacher’s Union president Ken Zydyk said.

The one-year agreement is consistent with the government’s net-zero mandate, Education Minister George Abbott noted in a news release on Tuesday night. “…the parties agreed to further discuss and seek mutually agreeable improvements on key policy issues to provide students with

The province’s 41,000 teachers have been without a contract for more than one year, and have rotated through phases of job action culminating in a three-day strike and back to work legislation last spring.

The BCTF Executive Committee is recommending ratification, president Susan Lambert said in a news release.

“We have been able to achieve some

modest improvements but, above all, we succeeded in getting government to take its concession demands off the table,” Lambert said.

Some important matters remain unresolved: there are no improvements in class size and composition; and teachers’ salaries lag behind their peers in other provinces.

Zydyk said he is cautiously optimistic about the deal. “I think the members will be pleased with the details once we release them,” Zydyk said.

“I expect Alberni teachers will support it.”

Voting on the agreement will take place on Thursday and Friday, and the results released

Friday night, Zydyk said. Teachers can cast their vote at each school.

The tentative deal standardizes language for a number of leaves and establishes a process for the local/provincial bargaining process, a news release from the BC Public School Employers Association noted.

Other details cover items such as retention of seniority rights and additional unpaid days off per year for personal reasons.

School District 70 trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said she hopes both sides will ratify the deal.

“I think we all hope that the coming school year will be peaceful and back to normal.”

UFT fish sign nearly ready WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A new Ultimate Fishing Town sign at Victoria Quay and Johnston Road will be unique, draw visitors who will take pictures, and be a good marketing tool, Carolyn Jasken said.

Jasken made the announcement

about the sign at city council’s Monday meeting.

The 20 foot high and 14 foot wide cedar carving will depict the phrase “Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town” and will have an eagle, Chinook salmon and trees ring it.

“This will put an exclamation mark in the city and let people

know they are in Port Alberni,” said Jasken, the Ultimate Fishing Town coordinator.

The sign is scheduled to be installed by mid-July, she added. Further signs may be later added directing people uptown, Jasken added.

The piece was produced by Ucluelet master carver Terry

McKinnon, and was underwritten by a combination of UFT, city and privately donated funds, she said.

of the plan with a target timeline to emerge from creditor protection in the near term.”

An earlier restructuring plan didn’t meet the minimum two-thirds approval required for approval.

The paper giant employs 1,700 people in Port Alberni, Powell River and Crofton.

The development is a big step, but the details of one provision still have to be worked out, Catalyst pensioner Peter Finch said.

“I looked forward with optimism that the vote would go this way and it did.

I’m delighted,” Finch said.

Finch worked as a staff employee for Catalyst for 35 years and belongs to the defined benefit class of pensioners, approximately 200 of whom live in Port Alberni.

Under the new plan, pensioners surrendered their health benefits and extended the time that the company can replenish the plan, which is underfunded to the tune of $120 million, to 15 years.

Grads’ future can be bright ‘Poverty’ declines, but no one notices This Friday, the Class of 2012 will celebrate the formalities of completing high school in Port Alberni. Much focus has been put on the fact this is the final graduating class at the old ADSS, which will eventually be demolished.

Next year, the Class of 2013 will have the distinction of being the first class to graduate in a state-of-the-art high school, the first for Port Alberni since the post-Second World War 1950s.

Not much has been said about what we are leaving as a legacy for these graduates.

In the past, grads were encouraged to leave the community as soon as possible, the thought being there is nothing for them here once they finish high school. Not event a postsecondary education. That is not the case now.

North Island College is constantly expanding its course offerings. The Justice Institute has brought classes here, and Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences brings people here from around the globe. Students have choices.

The new high school is in itself a sign of progress; an investment in the community.

We can look at our city as teetering on dire circumstances—businesses closing, the coal issue dividing young and old—or we can look at the opportunity available.

New stores are regenerating the old mall at the top of Johnston Road; other stores, like Walmart and Ford, are focusing on expansion; a new breakwater and a new CEO for the port authority signal growth for the waterfront; and merchants in South Port are galvanizing their efforts to create a better uptown.

At the end of the day, we owe these graduates hope. For they are our future.

ICTORIA – You probably didn’t hear this on TV, the percentage of Canadians deemed “low income” went down slightly in 2010, according to the latest Statistics Canada analysis.

This news was delivered in the annual “Income of Canadians” report last week. The share of people who fall below the federal Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) went from 9.5 per cent to 9.0.

The CBC couldn’t bring itself to admit any actual improvement, reporting on its website that the number of people with “low income” was about three million, “virtually unchanged from 2009.”

Other media outlets followed the unwritten rule that nothing remotely positive must be presented as news, particularly if it reflects positively on a right-wing government.

(Plus they had the Montreal body-parts case to update each day.)

This information likely won’t have any effect on the political discussion about “poverty” in B.C. The LICO survey will continue to be used as a measure of absolute poverty, despite the fact that it isn’t. It’s a relative measure that will always designate the same share of people at the low end of the scale.

BC Stats, the provincial equivalent of the federal agency, explained this problem in a special report last year.

“To illustrate,” the report said, “take a hypothetical future Canada where every citizen earns no less than $100,000 (and assume there has not been rampant inflation in the meantime, such that buying power is not dissimilar to

what exists today) and millionaires are common.

“In that kind of Canada, those at the low end of the income scale (that is, those earning ‘merely’ $100,000) would be considered poor if LICOs were used as a measure of poverty.”

Math aside, that’s the alleged “poverty line” routinely cited by the usual media authorities, like B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair.

Sinclair campaigned for years to get the B.C. government to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour. They did, in three increments, and on May 1 it increased to $10.25 an hour. As soon as the series of three increases was announced last November, Sinclair called a news conference to announce it’s not enough.

the minimum wage should be $11.50 an hour, Sinclair said. Of course, if B.C. businesses ponied up for that, the goalposts would shift again and the same proportion of “poverty” would magically still exist.

The B.C. NDP government-in-waiting continues to demand an “action plan” on poverty, with annual goals. All the progressive provinces have one, which I guess is why poverty is all but eradicated in enlightened places like Manitoba.

There are signs of the reality behind this political smokescreen.

Here’s one.

For what may be the first time in history, we now have a North American society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity. This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food.

People who advance this theory presumably don’t do much grocery shopping.

Poverty needs to be defined From / 10 There are plenty of processed, sugary, fatladen choices at the supermarket too. But there is also whole wheat bread, rice and fresh or frozen vegetables that are as cheap as anywhere in the world.

Given basic cooking skills and some effort, it’s easy to demonstrate which diet is cheaper as well as healthier.

know this. Which diet you choose isn’t a function of money, but rather one of education and selfdiscipline.

There is genuine poverty in our society.

One of the things that’s needed is a useful way to define it.

To the Editor, I am dearly hoping that the new mayor of our city and his councillors are smart enough to realize coal mining and the export of it, is not going to be of any benefit for any town looking to the future.

If they are wanting the same depressed town, frowned on by many, laughed at by some but with high hopes for most of its residents that this town is going to turn a corner….one day, then please don’t allow Port Alberni to become the “new” old coal port of Vancouver Island.

If you think people are leaving Port Alberni now, just wait until the town becomes a coal town.

Let’s look to the future and bring back the Arrowsmith ski hill, develop our harbours, bring the museum down to Harbour Quay, and attract families and tourists.

Also, look at the age and employment demographic that is pushing the coal idea and the demographic that is against it.

The new generation of residents must be the ones who decide how the town is now

developed, as they are the ones who will be working for many decades within it, and who must be burdened by an oldschool thinking of resource extraction in their city.

I have heard from many people that if coal does come to Port, they will definitely be leaving.

Please oppose any idea of coal coming into our city.

Compliance dividing city To the Editor, I see Compliance Coal trying to divide the Alberni community and attempting to capitalize on our collective economic and social pain.

With multiple global crises upon us, ongoing, and as yet unresolved, divide and conquer is an unforgiveable position to take.

For taking this hardhearted position, at this time in human history, Compliance will get the karma the universe has in store, as we all do when we treat each other badly and disrespect Mother Earth.

Oil and coal must end as a human energy source.

We are fellow nurturers of Mother Earth, not competitors (for resources) we have to overpower, or incapacitate in some way.

Willing human cooperation has the power to take us to that place of plenty we so long for.

But it will be on her terms, not ours.

Meantime, No Coal No Way folks must tell it like it is, in one resounding voice.

Taking back the narrative, letting John Tapics and global coal investors hear us say “divide and conquer is something we know too much about, already.”

People are hurting financially; they fall prey, understandably, to the jobs argument.

But, if we define what’s really going on, power-wise, then all will have to, at least, consider the bigger picture.

Why pit one against the other?

With ever increasing economic uncertainty, the sufficiency of a fund for cleanup and the insurance to cover a catastrophic event, should there be a need, grows less and

less likely each day.

So why should the people of Alberni take all the risks?

Rail better than ring road idea To the Editor, It seems transportation planning for the Alberni and Nanaimo Regional Districts has been hijacked.

Why were taxpayers never consulted or informed of this committee and its $100 million proposal to government?

I want the Asia Pacific Gateway to happen in Port Alberni. I have sent many letters to our elected representatives advocating for Port Alberni to be part of it.

But in these times of economic austerity, it is insulting to taxpayers that local leaders would propose spending up to $100 million on a 25-kilometre highway plus unknown sums for the ring road when reactivating the Alberni rail line would be a fraction of the cost.

Mr. DeLuca cites a decrease in accidents, connections to Nanaimo and

Annacis Island and time savings. Yet the railway would eliminate truck accidents, is already connected to Annacis and Nanaimo and the time savings are only for trips to Courtenay.

These new routes would blast through the watersheds of Big Qualicum River and Cherry Creek plus the City of Port Alberni’s Bainbridge Lake, and put existing recreational assets at risk.

The railway would destroy nothing, and would actually enhance existing tourism opportunities.

In fact, for the sums this committee has dreamt up, the railway could be extended down the Alberni Inlet to a new terminal, away from all the problems of the Alberni Harbour.

Then customers, not the taxpayers, would pay for maintenance of the railway once it was built.

This is about more than the coal mine now. Billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on rail infrastructure for the Prince Rupert and Vancouver ports. Port Alberni could be part of that.

Celebrate Hayes June 30 The Vancouver Island Old Truck Club celebrates the 90th anniversary of Hayes trucks with a three-day show, June 30 to July 2 at the fairgrounds behind Glenwood Centre.

Enthusiasts from as far away as Denmark, New Zealand, New York and Alaska are coming to Port Alberni to help

Peter Schula, of Lyngby, Denmark, can’t be at the Hayes event in Port Alberni this weekend, but he is building a model Hayes truck in his yard as an homage to the popular vehicle.

Besides trucks, there will be a log-loading demonstration, displays from trucking industry manufacturers, artwork and vintage truck videos.

Angel Magnussen will be on site, selling

autographed copies of her cookbook as well as truck hats and pins to raise money for Variety Club and BC Children’s Hospital.

On July 1, many of the trucks plan to join the Canada Day parade.

The show is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday.

Blais has been the sole owner of this car and still has the purchase order for this vehicle. Blais’s car was a part of the Show N’ Shine held on Saturday at Dennis Jonsson on Johnston Road.

The Junior Hospital Auxiliary gathered at the home of Lita Tilley for a reunion, the group had not been together since five years ago.

Lorna was born in Westlock Alberta on August 7th 1946, and moved to Port Alberni in 1957 with parents Richard and Julia Green who owned the Fir Grove Store now Beaver Creek Market. Lorna worked at Fir Park Village and Bread of Life as store manager.

Lorna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many in the community, and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Lornaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life will be held at the Italian-Canadian Hall on Monday, July 2nd at 1:00 pm.

Design Details, SpeciďŹ cations, and Deadlines: Design: Preference is for the Artist to incorporate Coast Salish aspects into the cedar carving. The story depicted will commemorate the 100 year history of the City of Duncan.

Log Dimensions and Criteria: The cedar log measurements are to be minimally 30 ft. in length, 2 ft. in diameter at top, and 3 ft. at bottom. The log must be of exceptional quality.

Model Totem Poles (maquettes): The applicant selected to carve the Totem Pole must carve and paint to scale, two 18 inch tall yellow cedar totem poles.

The maquettes must be completed prior to beginning the carving of the 30 ft. pole. These will serve as models for the actual pole.

Completion Date: The two 18 inch tall totem pole maquettes must be completed by October 1, 2012. A penalty up to 10% may be imposed upon failure to meet requirements and deadlines outlined in the RFP and the contract. A realistic timeline for completion of the 30 ft. totem pole must be included with the proposal.

Instructors Logging Fundamentals Training Western Forest Products Inc. is currently developing an innovative program to train individuals interested in a career in the logging industry. The Company is seeking applications from individuals who would like to be considered for the two available Instructor positions required to deliver a 7-week pilot program this fall (Sept/Oct).

Utilizing the WorkSafe BC “Cable Yarding Systems” and “Grapple Yarder and Supersnorkel” Handbooks as a guide, the Program is designed to provide entry level logging skills. Using a combination of classroom instruction and hands on training at an instructional logging site, the Instructors will teach the students the foundation skills of safety, environmental awareness, and job skills, necessary to be successful in both Highlead Tower and Grapple Yarding settings.

The Program will be taught at the Company’s Englewood Forest Operation, located 1.5 hours north of Campbell River and 1 hour south of Port McNeill. The Instructors will be responsible to assist with finalizing the Program’s curriculum and delivery of the 2012 pilot project and the planned 2013 Program (three 7-week programs, May to October).

Individuals interested in this opportunity must have extensive knowledge and experience on the operational side of the logging industry and ideally have worked as a “hooktender” during that time. Strong communication skills, patience and a demonstrated ability to teach are all necessary requirements for these positions.

The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society has reached an agreement in principle with majority shareholder Okanagan Hockey Schools to buy the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the B.C. Hockey League.

If the sale is approved by the B.C. Hockey League, it will mean the Bulldogs will be 100 per cent owned by the society, director Al McCulloch said. Minority owner Dr. David Ness has already stated publicly that if the society’s purchase is successful, he will also sell his 20 per

cent share in the team to the society. The See Group of Companies also owns shares.

A business plan has been drawn up, a term sheet signed and plans submitted to the BCHL board of governors for approval. If the society’s sale structure, business plan and operating budget are approved by the board, the society will own 100 per cent of the team and will hold no current liabilities, the society announced in a press release.

“We’re going to end up meeting with (the board of governors)

in the next week or so to talk about it,” McCulloch said. While the BCHL must puts its stamp of approval on the deal for it to go through, McCulloch was hopeful.

“We’re really excited to move forward now,” he said.

The junior hockey society has raised $250,000 and still needs to raise another $50,000 “just to make sure we’re solid through the season,” McCulloch said.

Vendor financing is involved on a longterm basis, with a competitive rate of interest.

Last week an Island-owned company, Vancouver Island Sports and

Entertainment Ltd., became the majority shareholder of the Victoria Grizzlies, also of the BCHL. Their deal is also up for approval in front of the league’s board of governors.

McCulloch said the move to local ownership in the south Island will positively affect Port Alberni’s bid.

The PAJHS has asked current directors Andy Oakes, from OHS and Dennis See to stay on as advisors to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.

Debolt scores prize money for first hole in one From / 27 It is quite normal for us and usually works just fine, but then the rain came.

Days like that are normally good revenue days for us and help our little business in indescribable ways.

When the rain arrived, we suddenly

found ourselves overwhelmed with golfers from both events mingling inside the small clubhouse quarters.

So there we were, pouring drinks, drying off chairs, relocating furniture and tables, and generally just trying to keep everything

from collapsing.

But for some strange reason all the golfers took it in stride and seemed to step out of their role as customers, appeared sympathetic to our plight and were all in good humour.

Congratulations to Jackie Little on being crowned the B.C. Golf Senior Women’s champion. In addition to being a golf champion, she works long hours alongside Pat running Hollies Golf Course. She is also one of the nicest people that you will ever meet.

Hearing about Jackie’s victory started me thinking about my children.

For the love of jazz AT THE CAPITOL: | Heather Keizur performs jazz standards in English and French, June 30 in Port Alberni.

Heather Keizur always loved the French language.

Born in the U.S., but raised mostly in Canada (including some time in Port Alberni), she tried to mimic the sounds of French as a child.

“I think I tried to say it long before I could speak it,” she said.

Keizur performs a selection of French and English jazz standards at the Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni on June 30, and again in Nanaimo for Canada Day at Diners Rendezvous.

Keizur caught the performance bug at a talent show in Grade 7. Her vocal talent earned her second place.

“I’d never performed in front of anyone before,” Keizur said.

After that, she sang for fundraisers and events, competing in the Miss Port Alberni pageant in 1981.

At 19, she started playing in jazz clubs in Nanaimo and Victoria, moving to California in 1984

before she settled in Portland, Oregon.

She stopped performing, instead raising her children.

Once her children were grown, she started performing again.

“We have an amazing jazz scene,” Keizur said.

musicians who performed on her album. Steve Christofferson accompanies Keizur during her concerts by playing piano and melodica, also called a blow-organ or a key flute.

“He’s really got a soul for music,” Keizur said. “His passion for music is equal to mine.”

Her love of the French language translated to music and she sang La Vie En Rose, which garnered so much praise she added the French songs to her repertoire.

Keizur, who graduated with a degree in French, teaches at a Montessori school, incorporating her two passions of French and music into her

lessons. Her students sing three annual concerts, which always include a French song.

“They just fall in love with these songs,” Keizur said.

“I just try to open up the world of music to them.”

Keizur said she can’t wait to return to the Island, which she regards as her hometown, to share her music with family and friends.

“I just love performing,” she said.

“It’s the most exciting thing to come there and perform.

“It’s like coming home.”

New centennial exhibit’s a hit MELISSA MARTIN Arts Around

Centennial Inspirations is the title of a unique art exhibit celebrating the city’s centennial and showcasing local artists at the Rollin Art Centre.

Each artist randomly selected a historical photograph, taken somewhere in Port Alberni 100 years ago. The photographs were their inspiration and each artist added their unique style when creating their paintings.

This exhibit is worthwhile viewing for the creativity and historical perspective.

Centennial Inspirations will run in the gallery until Aug. 15.

“You can’t get a better country than Canada. Sometimes, or most of the times, we don’t think much about it, because we take things for granted, but I can say that when you see other places, this is the best.”

Marie Harding, resident of Heritage Place, was born in Moose Jaw, Sask., in 1918. She lived in Dawson Creek, B.C. and several places in Alberta. Her father was a grain buyer so the family had to move frequently.

“I have travelled extensively to several places in the world, such as USA, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, The Galapagos Island, Mexico, etc. And, although there are many beautiful places to visit, none of them is compared to

Canada.

“Especially our Vancouver Island, where nature is seen everywhere: trees, mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, etc.”

Bob Hastings, a resident of Rainbow Gardens, was born in Lashburn, Sask., in 1929. He has lived in the community for many years and worked at the “Plywood” plant.

After the Second World War, he was stationed in Germany for 12 years with the air force. There he worked as a driver, driving “everything on tracks and wheels”.

“Our West Coast is the best! Canada has lots to offer to its citizens: working opportunities and a good life. Its cities, towns, the country side, the coast, they are all beautiful.”

Jerry Hnennyj, resident of Echo Village, was also born on a farm in Saskatchewan, in

1935. His parents were from the Ukraine and moved to the west coast for better working opportunities almost 75 years ago, when Jerry was a baby.

“You bet I am a proud Canadian! I was a taxi driver for almost 50 years so I got to know the real Canadians. Here in Port Alberni people are friendlier than anywhere else. I say this because I used to drive people from other places on the Island to their cities, and, nobody beats this place.”

Peggy McMurdo, resident of Fir Park Village, was born in Vancouver in 1920.

McMurdo moved around the Island several times and other parts of Canada.

“Canada is everything to me. I was born and lived in this country all my life and I can say that I love it. The people are what makes this country great.”

What’s on for seniors U Mary Ella Newberry, longest Abbeyfield resident, just turned 96 years old.

U On July 1, many of the seniors homes’ residents will take part in the Canada Day Parade. Others will watch it on 10th Avenue.

U Rainbow Gardens residents will be doing a “build a bear” event with the children followed by a Teddy Bear Picnic on July 3.

U Rainbow Gardens will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 21 from 12–2 p.m.

U The residents of Abbeyfield will “hit the road” this summer.

Some events will include “lunch with the castles” in Parksville and a visit to the Rollin’ Art Centre.

U Hank and Lorna will entertain at Abbeyfield on July 24 at 2 p.m.
