Agrifair, rodeo and more You know it as the Fraser Valley’s best little country fair and as the only Canadian Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned professional rodeo in the Lower Mainland. The 2011 Abbotsford Agrifair and Mighty Fraser Rodeo, coming to the Abbotsford Exhibition Grounds this weekend, is all that and so much more. “We have our roots in agriculture, and that is something we are very proud of, but from our very beginning in Matsqui 101 years ago, we have been so much more,” said Agrifair president Harry deJong. “What we really are, and always have been, is a community celebration – for one weekend each year the entire community comes together to enjoy and celebrate what makes us special and to enjoy a great variety of local, regional and national entertainment geared for the whole family.” The fair opens at 5 p.m. Thursday evening with a special $5 admission rate. Gates are open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday. Regular admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. But there are plenty of
ways to make that even more affordable. Save $2 off the regular admission by getting your tickets in advance at Abbotsfordarea McDonald’s locations or the Abbotsford and Matsqui Recreation Centres. Get family passes for two adults and two children at the gate for $30. Monday, you can get gate admission and an all-day midway ride wristband for $24. Kids 12 and under can print off a free ticket at www.agrifair.ca. And for those who don’t want to miss a minute of the action, five-day gate wristbands are available for $30. Parking is $5 with no in/out privileges. “When you compare our cost to what it costs to attend a movie, concert or sporting event these days, the value we offer is truly unbelievable. Agrifair is all about family and our prices are designed to ensure all families can afford to join us at the fair,” said deJong, noting they have been able to maintain prices because of the financial and support from both the City of Abbotsford and the local business community. That’s why local residents JOHN MORROW Abbotsford News continue to name Agrifair as Abbotsford’s favourite commuThe Mighty Fraser Rodeo is always a hit with fair goers. This year, catch the two-hour nity event. event in Thunder Bowl at 6 p.m. nightly on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

We’ve got talent For the past few years, television audiences have been glued to their TV’s all summer long to watch America’s Got Talent. Last year, one of the talents they were able to see make it to the Las Vegas finals was Bert Davis and his trained dogs. Bert is more than just a great dog trainer – he’s actually a very accomplished rodeo clown. This year, Bert will be bringing his talent and his dogs to the Mighty Fraser Rodeo. Al Parsons will be joining this year’s event as well as the new ring announcer. The rodeo will also attract the top cowboys and cowgirls from across North America. They’ll be competing in saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down and team roping and barrel racing. Appearances by the reigning Miss Rodeo Canada Princess, Grande Prairie Stampede Queen and other Rodeo Royalty will also be made. Because the action can be quick at times, a new Jumbotron screen with instant replays will be featured at this year’s shows. Catch the two-hour Mighty Fraser Rodeo in the Thunder Bowl at 6 p.m. nightly Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Valley Voices star at Agrifair The annual singing competition is just one of the many acts to dazzle on the main stage during the fair When Agrifair teamed up with Darcy D Vocal Studio and Nuu Music Artist Management three years ago to create the Valley Voices competition, it was an instant success. The competition attracted young singers from across the Fraser Valley, all waiting for the opportunity to present their talent to a larger audience and the chance to win a share of $1,500 from Abbotsford Agrifair. They are also competing for an entry into the PNE Talent Contest, a photo shoot, studio recording time and other prizes. “Again this year, response to the Valley Voices competition has been incredible,” said Agrifair entertainment co-ordinator Brad Styba. “We have 15 outstanding finalists in the 13-18 yearold category and another five in the 8-12 year-old category.” Agrifair will be show-
casing this year’s Valley Voices finalists on the main stage at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon and again at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. “The showcases allow the competitors to get a feel of the stage, which is probably larger than anything they have performed on before, and gives our weekend audiences a taste of the talent we have in this valley,” said Styba. The competitors return to the stage at 11 a.m. Monday for the competition semi-finals, with the top performers in each category then participating in the finals at 1:45 p.m. on Monday. Throughout the weekend, the main stage will also see acts like Stephanie Spence, the Johnson Brothers, Victoria Duffield, gospel singer Kevin Boese and Poppy and the Pistols. Emceeing the main stage is country singer Jack Jackson. But the music is not lim-
ited to the main stage. For great entertainment in a more intimate setting, venture out to the showcase stage next to pioneer corner. It will be presenting a wide variety of acts on Thursday evening. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, perfor mances will run from 2-8 p.m. On Monday, from 1-4 p.m. Performers include Roger Potter, best known for his Neil Young tribute, Daven Atma, Amber Scarfo and Andrew Courtney, Tony O’Hara, Laryssa Campbell, Carolyn Stewart, Rodeo Jones, Ken and Chris, Dan Spenst, and Dave Sumner. The music isn’t limited to the stages. This year, the entire Agrifair grounds could turn into an impromptu stage for Dan the One Man Band. For 20 years, Dan has been entertaining audiences with offbeat humour and onbeat music.

Agrifair: A kid-friendly event Abbotsford Agrifair prides itself on being a family event. “Families means kids and that’s why we put so much of our effort and resources into creating the best KidZone you can find,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. The Abbotsford Agrifair KidZone now fills the entire Ball Diamond with entertainment, interactive displays and events and activities young kids are sure to enjoy.
Take your kid into KidZone and leave with a tiger, a flower, or a butterfly. One of the first places your child will want to stop is at the face-painting table.
Once transformed into their favourite character, let them explore all that KidZone has to offer. Watch them play the unique games being offered by Abbotsford Community Services and The Olde Spaghetti Factory, let them loose in the Inflatable Sports Zone, or have them try the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service fire fighter combat challenge. Get a balloon animal from Mr. Flowers or try the Abbotsford Heat Hockey LTD games. If they like birds and animals, they’ll want to see the live animals from the Greater Vancouver Zoo or the Deep Cove
Gospel Hall Society’s popular interactive Noah’s Ark. While in KidZone, stop by one of the two concession stands for a smoothie, some mini-donuts or other munchies as you watch a demonstration by the Mamba Martial Arts Academy. And don’t miss all the entertainment on the KidZone stage. Gary Savard will be performing magic, there will be demonstrations by the Greater Vancouver Zoo, great music from A & D Music School and exhilarating dancers from Extreme Dance and Creative Edge. KidZone is where the Swing UP Trampoline Wall Show is taking place and is the home of the Trials Stars Bike Demo Team.
Acrobatics with a twist
Cowgirl Julie and Sidekick Rick Valenti entertain youngsters in the KidZone.

For most of the year, Twisters Gym at Exhibition Park is a training and practice facility for a growing number of gymnasts, many of whom are achieving provincial, national and even international success. Last year, for the first time, they opened their doors to the public during Agrifair, offering free drop-in gymnastics sessions in three categories: kids under six, kids between six and 12, and teens aged 13 and up. The kids are introduced to basic gymnastics routines and equipment under the watchful eye of club members and their coaches. Visitors can drop in to Twisters just about anytime during the fair. Between 2-3:15 p.m. each afternoon, the club will showcase its members. Watch the gymnasts perform on a beam, uneven bars, high bars, rings,
a pommel horse or on the floor. “We will have individual floor routines as well as group tumbling and finish each demonstration with a tumbling spectacular,” said Twisters demonstration co-ordinator Sue Tyson. While the demonstrations will include most members of the club, from tykes to tumblers in their 20’s, keep your eye out for the club’s stars: two-time Canadian Olympian Ken Ikeda, Canadian national gymnastics team members Nico Garcia and Zachary Clay and Emily Moorthy, BC’s Level 3 gymnastics champion. “We have some outstanding talent in our club and all our top athletes will be participating in the demonstrations as their training schedules permit which should make it very exciting for our audience,” said Tyson.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS THURSDAY, JULY 28 FRIDAY, JULY 29 SATURDAY, JULY 30 SUNDAY, JULY 31 MONDAY, AUGUST 1
THURSDAY, JULY 28 - $5 admission - $2 midway rides 9:00 am 5:00 pm
The travelling midway by West Coast Amusements is offering a number of deals this year.
Spend all day in the midway It just wouldn’t be a fair without a midway and there’s no better travelling midway than West Coast Amusements. Started by Bingo Hauser in 1962, West Coast Amusements now trucks its huge collection of rides and carnival games to fairs, exhibitions and other events all over Western Canada. In fact, the rides coming to Agrifair are just returning from a successful 10-day stay at the Calgary Stampede. Thursday evening, all rides will be just a toonie each. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all-day wristbands are good for unlimited rides
from when the midway opens until the gates close at 10 p.m. They are $35 each, available at any West Coast ticket kiosk. On Monday, fairgoers can get a combination fair admission and all-day ride pass at any entry gate for $24. “We offered this combination on Thursday last year and it was extremely popular. Since we are only open limited hours on Thursday this year, West Coast consented to make this special offer available on Monday instead,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner.
$101 for the 101st fair Explore the 101st Abbotsford Agrifair and you could win $101. Agrifair’s Penny the Pig and her friends have positioned themselves all over the fairgrounds. Receive on entry form per family for each paid admission, then find the pigs for your chance to win. Each pig has a clue leading to the next pig. Follow all the clues to find Penny and complete your entry. Each day, Agrifair will award $101 to one successful entrant. “We wanted to celebrate our 101st fair in a unique way so we came up with this interactive contest,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. “People go around the grounds collecting clues. They will not only get a chance to win our daily prize of $101 but be able to see and enjoy all the different amusements and displays we have at Agrifair

this year.” While everyone is eligible to win the daily $101 draw, five teams of two will have a chance at $2,000 in prizes in Agrifair’s first-ever Amazing Race cash giveaway. Sponsored by the Abbotsford News and Agrifair, Agrifair’s Amazing Race builds on the extremely popular Amazing Race TV show. At 11 a.m. Saturday morning, the five teams will be given a list of items to search for on the Agrifair grounds and a series of photos they will be required to take. They will have up to three hours to complete the task. Fairgoers are encouraged to cheer on their favourite team, then show up at the Main Stage at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon to see how the teams finished.

The original Musical Ride The Musical Ride originated in 1923 but it was not until three years ago that Agrifair audiences discovered Lord Strathcona’s Mounted Troop. They have quickly become Agrifair favourites and are making their third appearance in four years at this year’s fair. The last Canadian military mounted troop, Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment, was formed in 1900 to fight the Boers in South Africa. In 1923, the regiment established a musical ride to perpetuate its mounted heritage. When the Regiment was called to action for the Second World War, the ride was suspended before finally being revived for the regiment’s 75th anniversary in 1975. Since then, the Troop has

become a staple at civic celebrations, exhibitions, festivals and rodeos across Western Canada. The troop includes 20 soldiers dressed in period uniform. Their colourful, choreographed 35 minute performance includes a high-speed demonstration of the historical art of tent pegging, which originated with the British Army in India. Watch the troop in Thunder Bowl at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday, the troop will close the Country Horse Classic in the Agrifair Arena with a 4 p.m. show. Following each performance, Agrifair visitors will be able to meet the horses and soldiers.

Two places to wet your whistle The Fat Pig has retired but there are still opportunities to relax and enjoy an adult beverage at Agrifair. “This year we have two licenced venues at Agrifair,” notes Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. The first is the Thirsty Jersey, known as TJ’s. Located in the Food Court, TJ’s will be open from noon until the gates close (opening 5 p.m., Thursday), except Sunday when it
will close at 7 p.m. It will be a very relaxing familyfriendly venue, meaning it will be open to all ages. The second venue will be a new adults-only Beer Garden above Thunder Bowl. The Beer Garden will open at 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and close at 10 p.m. Elvis impersonators, Randy Friskie will also be performing at the venue.
When the Central Fraser Valley Exhibition changed its name to Abbotsford Agrifair, it was for one very important reason. “We wanted to emphasize just how important agriculture is to both the fair and the community,” said Agrifair president Harry de Jong. “Abbotsford is now the City in the Country but agriculture remains our biggest industry and it’s therefore critical to bring the Country into the City for a few days each year.” Agrifair hosts a wide variety of agricultural displays and competitions, including one of the largest gatherings of 4-H’ers in the province. “Our 4-H program has attracted clubs from all over the Fraser Valley to compete in dairy, beef, swine, poultry, lamb and horse competitions. We even have bike and tractor clubs involved this year,” said Agrifair agriculture program coordinator Sarah Nicholls. “Having such a large show brings a lot of animals into the barns for our guests to see and lots of enthusiastic 4-H’ers ready to explain what life is like on the farm,” Nicholls stated. This year, fairgoers will even have a chance to Talk with the Animals. At 1 p.m. each afternoon, 4-H’ers will bring selected animals into Agriland so visitors can get an up-close look at the animals and ask questions of the owners. It takes place again at 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Agriland displays include llamas and alpacas, cattle, ducks, rabbits, goats, pigs and sheep. There will also be regular demonstrations of the BC Dairy Foundation milking parlour, sheep shearing demonstrations at 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and calf bottle-feeding demonstrations.
