I

t may be the new retirement age in the eyes of the federal government, but at age 67, the Steveston Salmon Festival still knows how to celebrate in style. Canada’s biggest little birthday party returns for the 67th year on July 1. From sunrise to sunset, expect the streets of Steveston to be alive with red-and-white colour as revellers celebrate the nation’s 145th birthday. Each year the event draws an average of 70,000 people. “People love a parade and to roam the grounds and enjoy the various activities and exhibits, do a little shopping, and try some delicious food,” said spokesperson Janice Froese. “It’s great to show our Canadian pride and celebrate with 70,000 neighbours and friends.” Volunteer organizers have brought back the favourite attractions that bring tens of thousands to the fishing village each Canada Day: pancake breakfast, parade, salmon bake, live entertainment, trade show, crafts and children’s activities. Other highlights include the Japanese cultural show, food fair and a youth rock festival featuring local bands. And this year, mechanical amusement rides, along with inflatable play places, return to Steveston Park after a three-year absence. It’s a festival organized by dedicated volunteers. “Quite simply the festival would not exist without the dedication of over 400 people who care about their community, want to make a difference, and have a little fun at the same time,” said Froese. This year’s theme is “Me to We,” a phrase illustrating the power of youth. The fun begins bright and early at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Steveston Community Centre. The Children’s Bike Parade will provide the first spectacle, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Kajaks

‘Me to We’ theme •Steveston Salmon Festival organizers have adopted the ‘Me to We’ theme this year, celebrating youth in our community •The name comes from We Day, an initiative of Free the Children that encourages young people to lead local and global change •Within stadiums of young people, We Day brings some of the greatest social issues of today to the forefront, and provides ways in which every young person can find their place within the movement to create global change

Salmon Run at 9:50 a.m. The main Canada Day parade cruises down Moncton Street at 10 a.m. with some new entries this year, including a monster truck, antique tractors and a River Rock Casino Resort float complete with Elvis impersonator. The famous salmon barbecue begins at 11 a.m. and continues until all the fresh wild sockeye salmon—grilled over open alder wood fire pits—is gone. Over 2,300 plates were served last year. Cost is $15 per plate, cash only. Among performers on the entertainment stage will be Juno Award winning musician Bill Bourne. Most attractions are open until 5 p.m. Carnival rides will also be open Saturday, June 30 from noon to 5 p.m. Unlimited ride wrist bands are on sale in advance at Steveston Community Centre for $20 per day and single ride tickets will be sold at the festival. There are some changes to the festival grounds this year due to the construction of the tram barn in Steveston Park. Parking in Steveston is limited and visitors should expect some road closures due to the parade. Arriving by bus, bicycle or foot is recommended. Parking by donation will be available at Homma Elementary School, 5100 Brunswick Dr. A free park-and-ride shuttle service will be offered at the old Steveston Secondary site, 10440 No. 2 Rd., and the city’s works yard, 5599 Lynas Lane. Parking will also be available for $5 (in support of Steveston Judo Club) on the north field of Steveston Park, accessed from Garry Street.

67th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival

Rich Lam photo John Ng offers up some of his salmon to Diana Dickey during last year’s Steveston Salmon Festival.

Salmon BBQ always a huge hit Every year as salmon is placed on the grill and its delicious aroma fills the air, crowds gather and a long lineup forms for the Salmon Bake Barbecue. It’s hard to resist the freshly barbecued, wild salmon

served each year at the Steveston Salmon Festival. It always sells out. There is no marinade or spice; all of the flavour comes from the fish itself and the alder wood the fillets are cooked over. Canada Day’s famous Salmon Bake couldn’t be done without the 35 to 40 volunteers from

Sutton Group - Seafair Realty who barbecue over 1,200 pounds of salmon to feed the estimated 50,000 people who come to the Salmon Festival each year. Barbecuing starts at 11 a.m. until the fish runs out later in the afternoon. It’s $15 a plate, cash only.

Rich Lam photo

The Steveston Salmon Festival Parade marches off at 10 a.m. sharp from Garry Point Park and winds through the streets of Steveston past Steveston Community Centre to Railway Avenue. All along the parade route, people are thrilled by the exciting variety of entries: from military colour guards, to beautifully decorated floats, to marching bands, vintage vehicles, celebrities, sports teams, politicians and other dignitaries, community and cultural groups. With more than 100 entries, the parade takes nearly two hours to complete, so come early, bring your lawn chair and sunscreen and stake your claim along the parade route!

Richmond-based Fresh Groove Productions is also expected to present the hip hop dance group Freshh. Bourne is a Canadian Juno Award winner and a veteran of the blues and roots music scene. Raised in a musical family in rural Alberta, Bourne began his professional music career in 1975. Radio Canada International released his first album in 1982. He pressed his latest CD in 2010, collaborating with friends to create Bluesland, an album that also features his son Patrick Bourne. Farther north on the festival grounds, in the Steveston

espite 10 years of retirement, Wayne Spencer always manages to keep busy as a builder, a leader, and a volunteer. His active commitment to improving the community has earned him the title of honourary parade marshal for this year’s Steveston Salmon Festival. Compared to some of the past parade marshals that graced the Steveston Salmon Festi-

val, Spencer has had a short five-year involvement with the festival. However, his reputation as an avid community builder and the leading volunteer for the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market is a great value to the festival’s setup. His position as the lead volunteer involves supervising the younger volunteers and making sure that the tents and booths are set up just right. His years of building the farmers market proves his success and expertise. “I go to all of them so I know where things have to go,”

Spencer said. He admits that there is a reason why they call him the lead volunteer. Spencer moved to Steveston from Marpole in 1973. “It was just a matter of getting out of Vancouver, getting into the rural area,” he says as he recounts the days of vast properties and great farmlands. It was then that he began his building achievements. “I built my first house here in Richmond.” His passion for building doesn’t end at just houses. See Page 14

A honour to be honourary parade marshal

Martin van den Hemel photo Wayne Spencer is excited about being named honourary parade marshal.

From Page 13 “In my backyard, I built a 42-foot sailboat. Sailed up and down the coast for about 19 years on that sailboat.” Even the life of a quiet settlement was a chronicle of adventures for Spencer. He had the determination to work with his hands and build, despite his busy career as a coach driver. “I drove a coach for 35 years for Pacific Stageline. I’m a member of the Million Mile Club for driving, and that means no accidents for over a million miles. My main route

was back and forth Vancouver and Victoria on the ferry, so I was one of those lucky people who really enjoyed their work. I never had to work a day in my life.” Shortly after his retirement, his reminiscence of the Stageline shifted to a newfound aspiration of volunteer work at the farmers market, joining his daughters Denise and DeAnn. “I have two children. They’re both members of the board on the farmers market. I just found I didn’t have enough to do. And volunteering is great. I love it.”

Not only has the farmers market become a source of rewarding productivity, it’s become a family affair for the Spencers. Spencer can now be found playing pool, supervising young volunteers, and soon to be waving from the front of this year’s festival parade. When asked about his position as the honourary parade marshal, he says he is honoured to be among those who have done so much for the community. To prepare for his appearance in the parade, he says, “I’ve been doing a lot of smiling.”
