The first hole provides the golfer with a wonderful start with the tee perched some 75 feet about the fairway and offering a great view of the Okanagan Valley in the distance. The front nine is characterized by generous fairways, relatively flat terrain, and a combination of links style as well as tree lined holes. The front nine features four significant par 4’s that are all in the 400 yard plus range.

At just over 500 yards, depending on the tee you play, a good drive will give you the chance to reach the green in two. However you will need to flirt with the corner of Trout Creek Canyon to do so! G
olf can be one of the most frustrating games to play. There are no teammates to blame if things go badly. Your friends-or perhaps strangers-are watching every move you make. And you have to hit a very small ball a very long way with a stick, which isn’t something we do in our everyday lives. Golf coaches, videos and books abound which can help you improve your golf game, but there are a few basic tips that every golfer should remember when they are beginning to struggle out on the links. The most important thing to remember is to relax, even if you are having a bad game. Tension creates stress within your muscles and within your mind. Try to approach each shot as if it were the ďŹ rst one of the day. Don’t worry each time you approach the ball about trying to correct for the errors in your last shot. This can often lead to over-correction and over-thinking. Even if your mind doesn’t remember, your body knows the best way to hit the ball in every situation, and quieting the mind and allowing the body to take over can help get you back on track. A few deep breaths in with long, slow exhalations can help settle the brain and muscles before you strike. Remember rhythm and tempo in your swing. Many people think that a great golf swing has power and speed, and the professional golfers certainly do, but an even swing is more important than a powerful swing. A nasty slice or
hook is usually caused by mechanical errors tied to differences in the tempo of a swing. Many golfers try to add power at certain times in the swing-on contact or at the height of the swing. Keeping your swing even will send the ball where you want it to go, whether you are on the tee, the fairway or the green. Many people see a difference in their game from the ďŹ rst hole to the last, and general physical condition has something to do with that. If you are not in good physical shape, fatigue can set in after a long game of golf, particularly if you are walking the course. Although golf is often viewed as a recreational game, it can be strenuous. With most people spending their days in front of a computer screen, general physical health becomes important as the day goes on. A simple exercise program of resistance training and some light cardio work can help build your stamina and keep your muscles strong throughout your game. While humorous, Chevy Chase’s advice in the classic ďŹ lm Caddyshack still holds-when all else fails, be the ball. The physical aspects of golf are undeniable, but it is still primarily a mental game. Every round of golf has its unique challenges and obstacles. Some are on the course, some are in your mechanics and some are only inside your mind. If you can conquer these three elements, you can have a great time and a great golf game.

Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course 37041-71st Street Oliver, BC Pro Shop: 250-498-2880 Toll Free: 1-800-656-5755 Nk’mip Canyon Desert Golf Course is also popular for its scenery. Director of golf, Rick Crowson, said it’s similar to Desert courses in Arizona and golfers like the variety provided. Signature holes are # 12 and # 15. On 12, golfers can enjoy the view before tackling the tricky Par 3. The 50 ft drop in elevation makes the hole play one to two clubs shorter depending on wind. The par 5 15th hole faces North & affords every golfer great views of the South Okanagan.
