Town of

SIDNEY I encourage you to join us for Sidney Days as we celebrate Canada’s 145th birthday and our wonderful community of Sidney-by-the-Sea. Celebrations begin Saturday, June 30th at 11:00 am with the Grand Reopening of our beautiful Iroquois Park which has recently undergone some significant upgrades including the Water Spray Park. Later in the day beginning at 4:00 pm I’ll see you at the Community BBQ sponsored by Thrifty’s in Beacon Park. There will be free cake for everyone, pavilion performances and fireworks throughout the day! Sunday, July 1st, enjoy the Pancake Breakfast at 9:00 am and then find that perfect spot to watch the wonderful floats, marching bands and comical clowns in the Parade. The afternoon will provide a Family Fun Fair, Dog Show and the very popular Slegg Lumber “Build a Boat” contest. Volunteers play an important role in our community and Sidney Days is the perfect example of working together to provide an exceptional quality of life for our citizens. On behalf of Council and the Town of Sidney I would like to say a sincere “Thank You” to Peninsula Celebrations and all the wonderful volunteers who make these events happen.

Come out and celebrate Canada Day Sidney style! www.sidney.ca

NORTH SAANICH One of the most beautiful and diverse municipalities in the region, North Saanich Is usually the first community that visitors will experience when visiting the Saanich Peninsula. Both of the main travel entrance points on Southern Vancouver Island, the Swartz Bay Terminal for BC Ferries and the Victoria International Airport are located here. We welcome visitors and have much to offer them. Over a third of our land area is agricultural with many varied and active farms and other rural attractions. Not only do these offer a supply of locally produced food but they provide a charming contrast to our residential areas. We have a local Saturday morning farm market run by energetic volunteers at St. John’s Church on West Saanich Road., This begins its fifth season this June, and many farms offer sales of produce at the farm gate. Our annual farm Flavour Trail event will be held on August 25 and 26 this year, offering many opportunities to tour local farm, winery and restaurant venues. Our walking trails are extensive and appealing, covering most areas in the municipality and ranging from those easily walkable to more challenging areas in Horth Hill Park and Dean Park, well worth the effort for the views. Our many other parks offer a variety of attractions, including magnificent views of our shores, and our native plants and trees. We have produced a Trail and Parks Guide which is available to visitors and residents. In addition to these aspects, our 45 km of shoreline extends around the municipality, attracting many boaters and fishing enthusiasts, and serviced by local marinas. The Panorama Recreation Centre offers swimming, tennis, skating and other fitness facilities. There are two local golf courses, Glen Meadows and Ardmore. The opportunity to indulge in such a variety of leisure activities is enhanced in North Saanich by the unspoiled beauty of our rural and marine areas. We hope you have a wonderful experience visiting North Saanich.

Honourary Parade Marshall: Lorne Jack Born and raised on the Saanich Peninsula, Lorne has been an egg farmer with the B.C. Egg Producers’ Association for 35 years. Lorne, along with his wife of 43 years, Lorraine, and their family run Firbank Farms, near Island View Road. Lorne joined the board of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation at the behest of his friend Dale Henley in the year 2000. A couple of years later, when Dale stepped down as president, Lorne took over the position and is now in his 10th year in that role. Lorne expresses great pride about the accomplishments of the foundation during his involvement. “The new emergency room was our biggest accomplishment until we took on fundraising for the construction of the new operations rooms. Along the way, we have assisted with the development of the palliative care unit, purchased a new CT scanner, built a multifaith chapel and renovated the extended care unit.” Lorne holds the work of the Foundation very close to his heart. “What makes our foundation different, and has given me great satisfaction, is that our funding comes from community members. People in our community feel a sense of ownership and choose to support the Saanich Peninsula Hospital because it is something that our community needs and values.”

Events at a glance COMMUNITY DINNER

New this year Sidney Thrifty Foods will host the Sidney Days Community Dinner on Saturday, June 30 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Beacon Park. The Community Dinner barbecue is an opportunity for citizens to gather informally for good food, camaraderie and a chance to promote community spirit, all in celebration of Canada’s birthday. Bring a guest so that they enjoy the Sidney spirit too.

CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS

Following the dinner, take part in the Canada Day celebrations, to be held at Beacon Park. Sing happy birthday to Canada with host Corinne Coell and Sidney Mayor Larry Cross. This year’s highlights include live entertainment with Soul 62 and everyone’s favourite – the big birthday cake. Later that evening, at 10 p.m., come out and enjoy the musical fireworks extravaganza sponsored by the Town of Sidney.

SIDNEY DAYS June 27th, 2012

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT We are excited about this year’s celebrations and some of the new events we have organized for June 30 and July 1, Canada Day. To celebrate the best country, Canada, on her birthday we will start on June 30 with cake cutting after the Community Dinner. New this year, we’ll have fireworks with music on the barge at the waterfront at 10 p.m., which should be very exciting. July 1 will start with the fun run, pancake breakfast and of course, the Canada Day parade. We hope you enjoy our new float with the big pink pig who will be at Iroquois Park to help us enjoy the Family Fun Fair. One new event for the Family Fun Fair will be a street hockey game, played by young children against our fireman and later older children playing against our police personnel. Later in the afternoon we will have Slegg Lumber’s Build-a-Boat race so get yourselves down to the waterfront and watch the participants enjoy the cold water. All members of the Peninsula Celebrations Society are local residents who share a common goal – to celebrate and promote our community and culture. We of course do not do this alone and this year we want to mention several families: Steve and Sharon Butler, the Rebneris family and the Town of Sidney who gave us wood, storage, time and space to build the trailer for our new float. With the help of our directors who put in several work parties and my husband who took on this project, thank you all very much. It takes a community to put on any event and our community has always been generous. We also want to thank our sponsors, and our local service clubs, businesses, municipalities, federal governments and especially the Town of Sidney for their co-operation. Special acknowledgement to our volunteers for helping when called. Happy Canada Day everyone and have a great summer. Sheilah Fea president , Peninsula Celebrations Society 2012

If you like the gig, feed the pig A few years ago a clever volunteer from the Peninsula Celebrations Society came up with that catchy phrase and ever since it has been helping the volunteer group host exciting events for the residents of the Saanich Peninsula. At each Summer Sounds concert – held Sunday afternoons in Sidney’s Beacon Park throughout the summer months – volunteers push a little pink pig on wheels through the crowd collecting cash donations that help keep the society running. “Bill Ballenger built the little pig using the wheels off a golf cart,” said society president Sheilah Fea. “It’s a cute way to

help pay for the musical entertainment and other events we host each year.” Ballenger’s late wife Joan was an integral part of the society’s early years, helping to get the Summer Sounds concerts started. All Peninsula Celebrations Society events are free. Donations collected during the Summer Sounds concerts and from corporate donors help keep the fun happening year after year. “We had a brand new float made for the Sidney Days parade,” said Fea. A giant pink pig will glide down Beacon Avenue for the first time this July 1, helping the Peninsula Celebrations Soci-

ety have a bigger presence at the event. “It was just such a good idea to help people recognize that this is a volunteer group that puts on these events and that donations, both from local businesses and from individuals, help keep us going,” she said. Society volunteers hope the big pink pig will help remind people to feed the little piggy bank at the Summer Sounds concerts and keep the fun, family events happening all year. “You might say that this year we are going whole hog to capitalize on the piggy bank theme,” Fea said with a laugh.

Fire up the BBQ It has always been the tradition to have a Community Dinner on the eve of Canada Day – June 30. Due to the groups who have done this in the past being unable to put it on this year, there will be a change. Councillor Kenny Podmore did not want the tradition to die so with approval of mayor and council for the Town of Sidney, he approached Robyn DoSouto, manager of Thrifty Foods Sidney and explained the situation. DoSouto very quickly stepped in to save the dinner. “I just didn’t want this tradition to die.

SIDNEY DAYS June 27th, 2012

It can’t go away, it is so important,” she said. The Sidney store will completely take on the dinner and this year it will be a barbecue. Slegg Lumber Sidney, 100.3 the Q radio station and the Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa also quickly jumped in to help with supplying the grills, promo-

tion and other things needed. The barbecue will be by donation (minimum $5) with all proceeds going to the Sidney Lions Food Bank. Podmore was over the moon when DoSouto told him they would cover all the food and cold drinks. The event will be held in Beacon Park from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 30. Dignitaries and special guests will be on hand flipping burgers. Join us for the first ever Thrifty Foods barbecue where you can have fun, meet your friends and make new ones.

We love a parade How do you celebrate the most important day of the year in style? With a parade of course! And this year’s Canada Day Parade will be better than ever. Sponsored by Sidney’s Thrifty Foods and organized by the Peninsula Celebrations Society for the 29th consecutive year, the parade will feature live music, marching bands, colourful floats, live animals and much more. Come out to

see your friends and neighbours march in the parade. Don’t forget to bring your cameras. The fun starts at 11 a.m. with the crowd singing “O Canada,” then the first float leads off from Beacon Avenue and Resthaven Drive. The parade route heads east, then down Second Street, all the way to Ocean Avenue. There’s a special viewing area for folks in wheelchairs

We are proud supporters of Sidney Days

at the corner of Fifth and Beacon. As always, taking in the parade is free. But if you want to make a valuable contribution, help the Sidney Lions Food Bank by donating non-perishable food items or making a cash donation. Volunteers from the Peninsula Mission Community Church dressed in red food bank T-shirts will be accepting donations along the parade route.

Build a Quick Boat Slegg lumber has been providing some of the biggest laughs and best entertainment at Sidney Days for 27 years. Watch brave “sailors” paddle their plywood crafts around the buoys off Glass Beach, vying for the title of winner of the Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat contest. Or failing that, come home with the trophy for first to sink.

Face off in road hockey New this year is the addition of two road hockey games. The first game at 1 p.m. is for kids ages six and under and the second game at 2 p.m. is for kids ages seven to 15. Bring your stick and helmet and face off against members of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP and Central Saanich police with the help of our Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Peninsula Panthers players.

SIDNEY DAYS June 27th, 2012

Boats are built of plywood, duct tape and Styrofoam, no power or air tools are allowed and contestants must even build their own paddles. Check out the 27th annual Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat contest on the Sidney waterfront on July 1. Building takes place from noon to 4 p.m. and the race starts at 4:45, all under the watch-

ful eye of the Saanich Peninsula Coast Guard Auxiliary. The first place team takes home $100 each, second place $75 each, third $50 each and trophies are awarded for first to sink, crowd pleaser and best design. Head to the beach early to get a great spot to watch all the thrills, spills and action of this Sidney Days favourite.

Start your Canada Day at a run

Sidney Days Fun Run and Walk celebrates 24 years this Canada Day. A part of the July 1 celebrations, the run originally began as a 10K event, became an 8K and has now levelled at a 5K distance for safety and feasibility. In recent years, they’ve also added the 2K kids’ run. With an amazing record of fine weather, the 8 a.m. kickoff before the Sidney Days parade has consistently attracted both outstanding Victoria and area runners and race walkers. Participants have run the gamut from national team members to whole families intent on doing something active together to celebrate Canada Day. Organized by the Peninsula Track and Field Club, the run focuses on taking part rather than winning. There are hordes of draw prizes handed out to all and everyone has a chance to take home not only memories of a great day in the sun, but some goodies as well. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. adjacent to the Mary Winspear Centre. Cost is $15 per person ($20 on race day), or $5 for youth ($10 on race day) and there’s a $2 family discount for more than three people. For more information call Chris Lott at 250-656-3961 or visit raceonline.ca.

Family Fun Fair “Something for everyone” is the theme of the Family Fun Fair. Following the parade, head to Iroquois Park in Sidney for an afternoon of fun and entertainment. Bring a picnic, or purchase goodies at the Lions Lunch Box among other food vendors. Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the Sidney Rotary Club’s Games of Chance. Kids may need to let off a little steam. Set them free at Panorama Recreation Centre’s very popular inflatable castle and obstacle course. Look for the Picasso of face-painters, Susi Sunshine and her magical palette. You’ll see the return of the dog look-alike contest, where purebreds, mutts and their owners are welcome to participate. The show runs from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the field. Registration is at 1 p.m. New this year are two road hockey games at 1 and 2 p.m. where kids can play against local police and firefighters. All this, some clowning around, a roving magician and who knows what other special guests may drop in. Look for the big pink pig, stick-on tattoos and the education station – the tattoos are always the big draw!

Soul 62 The mission of this talented group of young musicians from Belmont secondary on Victoria’s West Shore is to spread their high-energy R&B grooves across the city and afar. With a population of 16, Soul 62 kicks up a storm of funk and R&B when they crowd onto the bandstand. Led by teacher Glenn Whitney, they can be seen playing around town at a variety of community and corporate events and fundraisers including New Year’s Eve at Panorama Recreation Centre, the Alzheimer’s Walk for Memories and the Mother’s Day Paint-In at Royal Roads. From Aretha Franklin and Etta James to Chicago and the Powder Blues, Soul 62 blasts fresh energy and life into soul and classic grooves. Catch the dynamic sound of Soul 62 in the Beacon Park Pavilion, Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. before the Musical Fireworks Extravaganza.
