it’s a rite It’s a rite of passage — an event to mark the end of one stage in life, and the beginning of a new one. In the case of high school, a spring convocation marks the end of grade school years — and for many of the graduates, a new job, a new path in education, or even an opportunity to see more of the world.
grand parade In general, the school faculty, parents and other dignitaries enter the facility first. Graduating students then parade in, to either traditional music or a class song.
cap and gown The grads are decked out, traditionally, in a cap and gown. These date back to medieval clergy and European universities.
presenting the diplomas One-by-one, each graduate is introduced (often alphabetically), called to the stage, and presented with their diploma. In B.C., this diploma is called the Dogwood.
presentations Faculty and guest speakers then do what they do, followed by speeches from the class valedictorian(s).
turning the tassel
Whether done by themselves or by one of the faculty or a guest presenter, the tassels on the graduates’ mortarboards (caps) are then moved from the right to the left. This signifies student becoming graduate.
pomp & circumstance Plenty of photos are taken during this ceremony — which can last up to three hours. Often, there are tidbits about each grad spoken, and their awards, dreams, goals and interests detailed.

“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson To the Members of the Ballenas Secondary Graduating Class of 2012:
Ballenas Secondary School
On behalf of the Ballenas Secondary School staff, we would like to congratulate this year’s graduates for their hard work, dedication, and commitment. We wish you all the best in your future pursuits. “To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream; not only dream, but also believe.”
To the Parents of our Graduating Students:
To the Members of our Broader Community:
The support and guidance that you have provided to your children over the past 12 years have made this moment possible. We encourage you to cherish the moment and to continue to support them as they enter the next phase of their lives. We would also like to thank you for working alongside us in providing your children with the best learning opportunities possible.
The support that our community provides each year to both the school and to our students is truly remarkable. We always ask our students to give back to the community, and through your modeling and generous donations, our students have come to understand what it means to be a positive contributing member of society. Thank you for your continued support of our educational programs.
