›INBRIEF Suspect brandishes knife in Ladner restaurant heist Delta Police are on the lookout for the suspect who held up a Ladner fast food restaurant on Sunday (June 17).

According to police, the man entered the restaurant in the 5200 block of Ladner Trunk Rd., produced a knife and demanded staff to turn over some cash from the till. After obtaining a small amount of money he fled. No one was injured in the incident.

He is described as a First Nation male, 18-23 years of age with a medium build. —Staff writer

espite the cooler-than-usual June weather, South Delta strawberries are coming in sweet as ever and are ripe and ready for picking.

"I just can't get over how nice the berries are right now," said Sharon Ellis of Ellis Farm on Westham Island. "From the weather that we've had, I just can't believe this stuff's coming out of the field."

Ellis Farms opened its U-pick patch on Tuesday ( June 19). For the next three to four weeks the fresh berries will also be available ready-picked at the farm store on Kirkland Road and the farm's roadside stand on Westham Island Road.

Ellis grows eight acres of strawberries.

The Rainier variety is available now and the Puget Reliance berries will be available later in the season.

Ellis advises U-pickers to bring a shallow container so the bottom berries don't get squished.

"And if it's going to be hot weather, it's better to come in the morning or in the evening," she said. "The berries hold a little bit better when it's cooler."

Around the corner at Emma Lea Farms, strawberry U-picking began on Wednes-

day ( June 20). For operator Kevin Husband, the wet June weather meant a slightly late start to the season, but it's also turned out some plump berries.

"We've got a great crop this year," he said. "The fruit size is going to be good because they have lots of moisture, and we just have to get some sunshine now."

Emma Lea strawberries are available via U-pick, at local markets and at the side of the road.

Husband reminds that Emma's Ice Cream Stand on Westham Island Road offers much more than just fresh berries.

"At the fruit stand we've got strawberry milkshakes and strawberry sundaes, strawberry scones, lots of stuff," he said.

According to the Fraser Valley Strawberry Growers Association, around 30 producers have been growing fresh and processed strawberries on around 600 acres in the fertile Fraser Valley for over 30 years.

Also on Westham Island is Bissett Farms, which grows six acres and four to five varieties of strawberries.

"It's still going to be a decent season, it's just going to be further into July than it normally would be," said owner/operator Lorraine Bissett. "As soon as the sun

comes out it really hits them, then they start sweetening up with the sugar, which is what you want."

She notes that last year also got off to a slow start because of the weather, but it had little effect on the crop.

"We still pulled off the berries and they were still a decent size, all the way through. And I think it will be the same for this year as well," she said.

The only drawback of a late start, she says, is that the strawberries then have to compete with raspberries and early blueberries.

A surplus of strawberries is no problem for Bissett, who usually freezes about oneand-a-half tons of the fruit every year for winemaking at her Westham Island Estate Winery.

The farm (located at 2170 Westham Island Rd.) will open its U-pick patch this weekend to coincide with the annual Strawberry Festival, June 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to berry picking, the event features entertainment, local crafters, and a concession selling barbecued smokies, hotdogs and strawberry shortcake.

A pedestrian airlifted to hospital is in serious condition after being hit by a car along Hwy. 17 near the 28th Ave. overpass early on Monday afternoon.

Delta Police said the incident took place at around 12:30 p.m. and closed traffic in both directions along the highway for a short while to allow an air ambulance to land in the area. Southbound traffic was diverted along Deltaport Way out to Arthur Drive. —Staff writer

Best score yet at hospital golf fundraiser While golfers tried to keep their scores low on the course at King's Links by the Sea in Ladner, donations reached an all-time high during the Delta Hospital Foundation’s 13th Annual Delta Health Golf Classic. Held June 14, the event raised more than $164,000, surpassing the initial goal of $125,000. “We are extremely pleased with the amount of support the golf tournament received this year,� said Lois Wilkinson, chair of the Delta Hospital Foundation board.

"The money raised at the tournament will benefit cardiac care programs at Delta Hospital by bringing urgently needed diagnostic equipment to our community.�

Chilly conditions and rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of a few hundred people protesting port expansion in South Delta on Saturday afternoon (June 16).

Banging pots and pans, chanting anti-port slogans and parading a 20-foot-long salmon puppet, the group marched down Ladner Trunk Rd. and through Ladner Village.

Cathy Wilander, a member of the Council of Canadians and protest organizer said the aim was to show the opposition to the possibility of farmland being used for port-related uses in the coming years.

Wilander said the options on farmland could see 558 acres used for industrial purposes.

In April, Delta South independent MLA VIcki Huntington released information about the options on the farmland and voiced her opposition to the proposed use for port-related activities.

“This is the industrialization of agriculture on a grand scale,”

The fundraising campaign to find a new home for the REACH Child and Youth Development Foundation took a big step forward Monday morning ( June 18).

That’s when the Delta Agricultural Society pledged $250,000 towards the foundation which plans to re-locate from its current facility near Boundary Bay Airport to the site of Kinsmen House in Ladner.

Cost of the project has been pegged at $4 million.

Peter Guichon, president of the agricultural society said his group was approached by REACH about two years ago.

“We think it’s a really worthwhile project,” said Guichon. “We donate money to the hospital, the Delta Farmland Wildlife Trust is our biggest recipient of funds year in year out. But this is also a very worthwhile project and our members really support it.”

Irene Forcier, chair of the foundation, said the agricultural society’s help, when coupled with the Corporation of Delta’s donation of the land at the Kinsmen House site accounts for a substantial part of the project.

“Right off the bat with the land, that was worth about $1 million,” Forcier said. “And what we’re

The current site on 72nd Street may be situated in the heart of beautiful farmland, but its remoteness can make it difficult for families to travel to since it is not on a bus route.

“It’s also timely now that we build this facility when so many children are being diagnosed with autism—one in 88 children,” Forcier said. “It’s an incredible number and is growing expo-

nentially. So, we are trying to get ahead of the curve a little bit and the facility here is outdated and hard to get to.”

Forcier added that REACH is absolutely thrilled with the agricultural society’s assistance.

“This donation, they (society) is taking a very serious leadership role in our fundraising and will show the way for other people.”

The $250,000 pledge is to date the single-largest made to REACH’s project. Currently, just over $600,000 has been raised. editor@southdeltaleader.com

Hamming it up Amateur radio operators provide backup communication in case of emergency

hen disaster strikes, entire communities can be left isolated.

Earthquakes, storms, flooding and manmade events can compromise traditional modes of communication such as landlines, cell phones and the Internet.

Fortunately, most communities across North America—Delta included—have amateur radio operators (also known as hams) ready to spring into action when help Christine is needed.

Lyon “We haven’t had any major emergencies, but we’re always ready,” says Darrel Smith, a Ladner resident and member of the Delta Amateur Radio Society.

Smith, a longtime ham known over the air waves by the call sign VE7CUS, says the society has the tools and training to help with public service and communication when all else fails.

Residents will have a chance to meet and greet with Delta’s ham radio operators this weekend.

Using only emergency power supplies, society members will host a public demonstration of their skills June 23 and 24 at the annual amateur radio Field Day event at North 40 Park by Boundary Bay Airport.

Smith, who is co-ordinating the event, says there will be eight or nine stations set up, each operating with different types of radios and antennas.

Visitors will have the opportunity to make contact with people participating

in other Field Day events across North America.

Operations begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and continue overnight until 11 a.m.

Sunday.

“Some people sleep, some people don’t,” Smith says.

In addition to emergency readiness, local ham operators also volunteer their services at community events such as the Ladner May Days Parade and the Tour de Delta.

At home, Smith spends a couple of hours a day in his equipment-laden “ham shack” or the outdoor radio station he set up in an RV in his backyard next to a 65-foot antenna.

Smith says there are many aspects of ham radio that draw people to the hightech hobby. Some enjoy deciphering morse code, and others, like himself, specialize in digital communication.

“My main operation is using the computer, taking the messages and they’re sent out over the air and received and a computer on the other end decodes them,” he says.

For many, radio is a fun way to chit chat with people all over the world— without racking up costly long distance fees. While Smith has never gone for the journey, some members of the club have participated in amateur radio trips, known as DXpeditions, in which hams tote portable equipment to a remote or isolated location and see what sort of responses they receive.

The Delta Amateur Radio Society meets Thursday evenings at either the Tsawwassen CoPS office or the North Delta Public Safety Building. The society also offers basic and advanced ham radio qualification courses. Visit www. deltaamateurradio.com for more info.

Chamber wants SFPR interchanges

Association says stoplights will cause gridlock, cost businesses millions of dollars The Delta Chamber of Commerce is pushing the province to construct interchanges rather than intersections at the two access points to the South Fraser Perimeter Road in Delta’s industrial area.

While the association of businesses has been in support of the new road since day one, it is concerned that installing traffic lights in Tilbury and Sunbury will restrict the flow of vehicles through the area and hurt businesses.

“While the new road, a highway really, will contribute to the economic development of our community, province and country, it will open with a choke point at the busiest section, right in the middle of the Tilbury industrial park area and take us back to gridlock not only on the new road but on our other highways and roads,” said John Appleby, a past chair and transportation committee member of the chamber.

“We project immediate gridlock in this area, slowing traffic and stopping it, at tremendous expense to businesses and the community—an expense

far, far greater than the money the government is saving by avoiding the interchanges,” he said.

The chamber has advised the province of its concern, but says the government stands by its projection that road capacity will not be reached for another decade.

Meanwhile, the chamber has conducted its own independent analysis which indicated the SFPR will open with demand already 60 per cent more than full capacity because of the impediments posed by the planned intersections.

“For that reason we have been advocating for construction of interchanges there, not simple four-way intersections with traffic lights, now, while the road is under construction and at far less cost than in the future when the interchanges would have to be developed as separate projects,” Appleby said.

The four-lane, 40-km long road will connect Deltaport Way to 176th Street in Surrey. It is expected to be open to traffic in December, 2013.

Tour de Delta volunteer co-ordinator goes with local grapes in pie recipe Michelle Hebein just loves the spirit of Deltans when it comes to lending their time to a community event. And judging from the numbers at the Tour de Delta each year, the feeling is mutual.

Hebein, the volunteer co-ordinator for this year's edition of the tour said the three-day, three-race event that runs July 6-8 requires 240 volunteer positions to be filled.

"Usually, about 140 people fill those positions," Hebein said, "because they volunteer for either one, two or even the whole three days."

Making up a big part of that contingent who give their time are "regulars," some of whom have been helping out since the first race year in 2001.

"It's such an amazing weekend, it's

fun, the volunteers just love to be here and take part in all the excitement," Hebein said.

Another one of Hebein's local favourites is the fact she gets grapes grown in North Delta by a friend for her concord grape pie recipe.

"A lot of people don't realize you can make grape pie," Hebein said. "You're used to having the regular berry pies, but I didn't even know you could use the concord grapes until I looked it up because I needed more recipes to use the grapes I had."

Concord grape pie INGREDIENTS 1 recipe pastry for 9-inch double crust pie 5 cups of concord grapes 1 ¼ cups white sugar

¼ cup all purpose flour 1 pinch of salt ¾ tsp. lemon juice 1 ½ tbsp. butter

DIRECTIONS Wash grapes, remove and save the skins. Place grape pulp in large saucepan. Mash a few at the bottom to release their juice. Cook over medium low heat until grapes come to a full boil.

Remove pulp from heat and press through a food mill to remove the seeds. Combine pulp and skins in a large bowl.

Stir in lemon juice. In a separate bowl,

mix sugar, flour and salt. Stir into grape mixture.

Pour filling into pastry crust and dot with butter or margarine. Cover with second pastry shell.

Flute edges and cut little slits in the top crust for steam to escape.

Bake at 400 degrees F for 45 minutes, or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through the slits in top crust.

Cool.

and raffle ticket sales raised over $22,000 to support the BC Children’s Hospital where 13-year- old Nolan is receiving treatment for leukemia.

Participants ranged from young children to grandpas, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, schoolmates and teammates, friends and neighbours, and one young girl who donated her birthday party charity collection of $200 towards Nolan’s Locks.

Many came to donate and then stayed to connect as a community.

In just two short weeks, many

volunteers came forward to help organize this event. Overall, the turnout and response was just incredible.

We would like to thank all the generous, caring people in our community who provided their ideas, energy, time, prizes, donations and their hair to make this event an overwhelming success.

The level of professionalism was palpable and the energy in the audience just remarkable at our three sold out events.

I am very proud to have been able to offer this kind of arts and cultural experience to our friends and neighbours.

'Crazy' sentences Words of a rioter sentenced this week to one month in jail have plenty of meaning.

“This is crazy,” Emmanuel Alviar reportedly said after a judge delivered a sentence to the Surrey man for his role in the Stanley Cup riot one year ago.

While we applaud the sentence handed down to a rioter this week, the judge’s decision illustrates the disparities in our justice system.

Alviar called his sentence “crazy,” presumably because he had no prior criminal record, turned himself in and pleaded guilty. The 20-year-old also got 16 months of probation and 150 hours of community service. He is the second rioter to be sentenced. There’s lots more to come, including some from Delta.

Remembering the devastation rioters inflicted on the Olympic city—in front of the eyes of the world—perhaps Alviar actually got off easy.

Punks of the world need to know this sort of antisocial behaviour is not only unacceptable, but there are consequences to such negative actions.

But looking at some other recent sentences for completely unrelated cases, it leads us to question how sentences are landed upon by our justice system. Hardened criminals are set free with a slap on the wrist; killers get off with little more than a stern lecture.

There’s the case of Donald Bakker, a convicted sex offender who is now living in Penticton. He has been categorized as a “high risk to re-offend,” but he’s out in the Penticton community.

Bakker was given a 10-year prison sentence in 2005 after pleading guilty to sexually abusing seven Cambodian girls between the ages of seven and 14.

But he’s already out.

Earlier this month a spokesperson for a victim services group said it’s almost as if the emphasis has gone from the person who committed the crime to the general public—to keep themselves safe.

In such cases, it’s difficult to understand how a sentence is arrived at—particularly for the victims and their families.

For the many more rioters—19 have been charged from Richmond alone—who are awaiting trials, one can only hope they’ll have surprising sentences like Emmanuel Alviar.

Victims—and the public—deserve it.

e're seeing just the tip of the iceberg."

Those words are from Dr. Randall McCuaig, the physician overseeing the Specialised Geriatric Clinic at Delta Hospital. And his comment stems from the fact Deltans, as a group, are getting older.

According to recent Stats Canada figures for 2011, 15.5 per cent of Delta's population is at or beyond retirement age, up significantly from figures collected in the previous Canada census in 2006.

And the marked rise in that segment of the population is, in part, shaping the type of health care being offered locally now, and into the future at Delta Hospital.

Annette Garm, Site Director at Delta Hospital, told the South Delta Leader that planning is well underway to examine how to best serve that anticipated wave of older patients when they arrive on the hospital's doorstep.

"The master concept plan really looks at what services we're going to need in that zero to 15 year period, what are our priorities in the next two, three and five years, and what do we see forecasted after that," she said.

Two areas at the top of the list are improvements in the short term—between two and five years—to the medical imaging department and laboratory services.

But significant changes in the longer term have also been earmarked to deal with the aging population.

There's a call to increase the number of medical beds at the hospital from the current 51 to 100. With the current average age of those using them now at 80 to 85 years old it's clear to see at what demographic the resources are being aimed.

Then there's a possible doubling of the number of a residential care beds, which now stands at 92.

"We are in a community that has a very large demographic of an aging population, although we are not growing as rapidly as

some of the other communities are, we are growing especially around the area of the aging adult," Garm said. "In Ladner and Tsawwassen there is a great, emerging need for residential beds. Then we'll probably have to revisit the emergency department and see if it is big enough."

With the current peak number of ER visits topping 30,000 annually, Garm said there is still some room to accommodate more. But for how long, the future is uncertain since Delta Hospital works within a constellation of services within Fraser Health which serve 1.6 million people from Burnaby to Boston Bar. Also part of the longer term needs—six to 15 years—is an increase of mental health beds.

Keeping other needs in mind One area also hoping to receive some attention as part of Delta Hospital's plans for future expansion of services is the Specialised Geriatric Clinic—specifically, the memory clinic which has been offered locally for the past three years.

"It's (memory clinic) mainly to assist family physicians in the management of complex medical issues," McCuaig said. "And for the most part it is dementia and memory difficulties. But we also look at poly pharmacy— medication management—frailty, and fall/ risk assessments. Anything to do with people getting older and basically becoming a bit more complex.

"The majority of our work is with dementia, though, managing dementia cases because dementia never has a single entity patient like a gall bladder patient or heart attack patient," McCuaig added. "Dementia involves the caregivers, the loved ones, the family. The whole dynamic of treating dementia involves everyone, not just the patient."

The clinic currently has about 200 patients on its books, receives about three to four new referrals each week, and has a wait list time of around three months, depending on the severity of the case.

Estimates for the future patient load?

"The prediction is that it's going to get huge," McCuaig said. "As the population ages we know we're going to get more dementia cases—that just goes hand in hand. The longer you live, the more likely you're going to develop a mental illness, whether it will remain in the mild dementia for your life, or markedly progress to the middle or late stage of dementia, nobody really knows."

What he and Sally Bearblock, nurse at the Specialised Geriatric Clinic, both understand is that facilities will have to grow to serve that expected rise in patients.

"Essentially, what we're looking at is trying to get more (doctor-patient) time. We (currently) have funding for one day a week. What can be done and what should be done—only time will tell," McCuaig said. "I think that better education for family physicians, too, will help them to be able to better manage dementia patients in their own offices. Will we be able to fully look after all of these cases?

I have no idea."

"It is a bit of the chicken and the egg," Bearblock said. "The program is growing, the

referrals are constant. But the program cannot grow until we get a physical space here.

So, we want it to grow, but it's just finding the room. They (patients) keep rolling in every day, and the wait list gets a little bit longer."

"We've done a lot of work with the master site concept planning for Delta Hospital and the specialised seniors clinic is an identified need. And we are requesting more space as well," said Sharan Brar, manager of the clinic for Fraser Health.

What's required are a pair of treatment rooms, and some clerical space.

That may sound quite modest when looking at some of the items higher up the needs list at Delta Hospital, but the expected increase in the number of older patients will hopefully make it a reality.

Short term expansion of the labs and medical imaging is expected to cost $12 to $13 million. That has yet to receive approval from provincial authorities, said Garm.

"But so far, we've been doing our planning, making our case and moving along, hoping we will get the next steps in place— executive approval and funding."

For servicing those dealing with aging and dementia issues, that approval would be welcomed.

"Our limitation, right now, is space," Bearblock said. "And everyone familiar with Delta Hospital is aware for the need of expansion. So, in the future, as the program expands and space becomes available, I think we'll be able to pull in those allied health resources." editor@southdeltaleader.com

Dance and musical talent from around the globe at Rotary Square on June 23 The Business Improvement Association (BIA), in partnership with the businesses at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall will be hosting its third annual Tsawwassen Multicultural Celebration at Rotary Square in the beautiful breezeway by the pond.

The event runs June 23 from 3 to 5 p.m.

“The past two years we held this event outside of the CIBC at Bayside Village and it was very well received by the community. Many people had the opportunity to see beautiful and colourful dancing in an outdoor setting for free,” said the BIA’s executive director Ana Arciniega.“Normally, musical groups have a chance to perform concerts outdoors but it is not common for dance schools to come out to the street. This makes this event very unique and extremely exciting."

The celebration features local dance and musical talent, presenting styles from around the world including flamenco, Zumba, high-

“We really want to encourage our residents and shoppers to come out and enjoy the performances by these groups, we will have chairs and many other activities,”

The businesses from around the mall will be hosting various activities including face-painting from Sublime, goodies from Bell, a barbecue from Lucky Surf and Skate, a spin the wheel game from Flowers Beautiful, cupcakes from Sierra Automotive and much more.

Tsawwassen Sun Festival returns for 40th year

Taking place on Sunshine, a parade, food and music.

What else could you want during a B.C. Day long weekend?

The Tsawwassen Sun Festival celebrates dishing out the good times for 40 years.

Jim Kinnear photos For the past 39 years the B.C. Day long weekend has been synonymous with something special for South Deltans—the Tsawwassen Sun Festival.

And with 2012 marking the 40th edition of the local celebration, organizers are planning something special to mark the occasion that runs Aug. 3-6.

Each year, the event draws around 12,000 visitors to the community for a wide range of attractions—from the traditional parade down 56th Street to the kids midway at Winskill Park.

There's also the popular antique fair at the South Delta Recreation Centre, plenty of wonderful food to please just about any palette, a slo-pitch tournament, and great live music that can be heard just about from one end of town to the other.

This is the third year for the Music Festival portion of the Sun Festival with eight stages that will host a total of 35 acts and more than 70 individual artists.

Just look for the signs that indicate the official venues and start enjoying the sweet sounds.

Music is a big part of

the activities at the Sun Festival, and in addition to the Music Festival the Sunday night concert in the park at Winskill Park features The Left.

The Sun Festival is also made for honouring those who foster the arts locally, and the Mentor of the Arts Award returns for a fourth year.

Sun Festival goers can also rely on a great start to their day with a delicious, freshly made pancake breakfast with fresh fruit, whipped cream and sausages at Winskill Park starting at 8 a.m.

Outdoor screenings cross the age groups as crowds turn out for summer flicks The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen (BIA) will once again delight local families and draw visitors to the community with its Outdoor Movie Nights.

For the fifth year, the BIA is bringing together entertainment, local businesses and organizations and a movie under the stars.

"Last year we saw a huge increase in attendance—we had over 2,500 people one of the nights,” said Ana Arciniega, BIA executive director. “We always enjoy seeing people from a variety of age groups attend—some in their pajamas, in costume, or some celebrating birthday parties and reunions.

It is simply an incredible excuse to go to the park and visit with friends and neighbours.”

Vancouver’s Chinatown bustles with history

Bringing a small town feel to the big city Vancouver’s Chinatown is full of culture, history and community spirit.

It’s a great place to live, but as one of the most historical areas of Vancouver, Chinatown comes with several guidelines for developers.

“How do you build in a part of the city with so much history?” says Brian Low, director of Panther Constructors.

Panther is currently building The Flats on Georgia, a nine-storey, 28-unit condominium building in Chinatown.

Some of the guidelines they ran into were height restrictions and the number of windows allowed on the building, Low says. They also had to ensure that the architecture of the project would fit

in with the surrounding buildings. After much consultation with the city, they were able to accomplish this feat.

But it was the friendly atmosphere that most attracted Panther to the area.

“It’s a small town inside a big city,” Low says.

As a National Historic Site, Chinatown is always bustling with visitors and residents. It’s the second largest Chinatown in North America.

The market holds vendors of all stripes, selling everything from local vegetables to fine seafood. A movie theatre and several banks have also set up shop, so Low’s idea of a small town in a big city is certainly not far off.

Verve is just minutes from SkyTrain, so you will be easily connected to everywhere in the Lower Mainland. There are several schools in the area as well, so Verve is great for families of all ages.

The amenities in the building include a yoga studio, furnished guest suite and a gym. There will also be a children’s play area, a large meeting room, a fireside lounge with a flatscreen TV, games rooms with a pool table, games area and kitchen/bar that opens onto a private patio, and a party room with a full kitchen, bar and private patio as well.

Porte will hold a grand opening on June 23, and Chaput is already anticipating a great response.

“With mortgage payments around $750 per month, you can own for less than renting,” she says, adding that the homes are “super affordable. ... This is a great opportunity to get in the market.”

POSTLETHWAITE, (Bill) William The family of William Postlethwaite is extremely sad to announce his passing at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta, Saturday, June 16, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris, sons; Marc and Scott and grandchildren; Alec, Lauren, and Felisha.

Born in Liverpool, England in 1928 Dad left school early to go to sea serving with distinction on several luxury cruise liners crossing the Atlantic.

Emigrating to Canada in 1953 and married Doris Carter shortly after arriving and were married for over 50 years.

After a drafting correspondence course at a local college in Toronto Dad started a career in the aerospace industry quickly rising to president and owner of Bauer Manufacturing. A leader in the aerospace field. After selling the company Bill moved his family to Tsawwassen where he put down his roots. Bill by this time was an avid skier, skiing up to days 70 days per year until his late 70’s where Whistler Mountain will always remember him as (the guy in the yellow ski suit).

Special thanks to the staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for taking such good care of Dad in his final days.
