olice are on the search for a suspect after shutting an illegal drug lab in Shawnigan Lake. Shawnigan Lake RCMP seized drugs and cash at a home and its outbuildings in the 1600 block of Shawnigan Lake Road Tuesday morning. That’s where they found methamphetamine plus numerous chemicals in various states suspected to make methamphetamine, as well as suspected street-level mushrooms, ecstasy and marijuana. “The outbuilding that house the majority of the chemicals has been sealed off and will require further examination,” an RCMP press release says. “Experts in (illegal drug lab) investigations advise the materials were contained to the building and that there appears to be no environmental concerns at this time.” Police say the property and surrounding area’s residences and seasonal cabins were checked, but the majority were empty. Police executed the search warrant for the home and its suspected drug lab — called a clandestine or clan lab — at about 11:35 a.m. Tuesday. Shawnigan Mounties were joined by the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Police Dog service, B.C. RCMP Clandestine Lab Team and the Island District Federal Drug Section. more on A8

aple Bay became Cedar Cove this week during shooting of episode one for Hallmark Channel’s TV series based on novelist Debbie Macomber’s books. Staff were tight-lipped on the set Thursday as ¿lming happened inside Maple Bay Marina’s rustic Shipyard Pub, doubling as
the American cove’s Captain’s Galley bar. Cedar Cove is a sort of Harlequin-bythe-sea series based on happenings on the cove’s various quaint streets. The series sees ¿lm star Andie MacDowell (Four Weddings And A Funeral, Groundhog Day) portray Judge Olivia Lockhart opposite a Cove citizen played by Dylan Neal. Facts were few from the 70-member crew, but co-owner David Messier was pumped about the marina’s ¿rst shoot of note.
“It was a great opportunity for us. It was a ¿rst-class shoot with a ¿rst-class organization,” he said of Hallmark folks who rented the Shipyard, a Àoat home, and some dock and parking space during the Tuesday-to-Thursday ¿lming. Messier declined to say how much rent Hallmark paid — based on industry rates — for use of his marina. “It was more than fair — it wasn’t a small amount.” more on A8
