Babies teach students about safe, caring schools Renée Andor Black Press
Grade 7 Brooklyn Elementary student Jackson Sater learned to appreciate how special a baby is thanks to roots of empathy baby Elliot. Photo by Renée Andor
The Roots of Empathy (ROE) program recently celebrated the school district’s youngest teachers — babies. The Comox Valley School Board office was filled with babies, parents, instructors and learners as the ROE program celebrated the end of its seventh year in the district. ROE is an evidence-based program in which babies teach schoolaged children about empathy, just by being themselves. “They’re the youngest teachers in the world,” said program co-ordinator Carlene Steeves. The babies are “teaching us to care about other people and to think about other people’s feelings, and I think that’s the core of this program, and so for me, I think it’s critical
that we teach children the roots of empathy — and that’s what this program does.” According to its website, the program can decrease bullying, increase social inclusion and create safe and caring schools, among numerous other positive outcomes. A neighbourhood baby — who is two to four months old when
the program starts — and parent visit a classroom nine times, and a trained ROE instructor coaches students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. The classroom visits focus on nine themes — meeting the baby, crying, caring and planning, emotions, sleep, safety, communicating, who
am I, and goodbye and good wishes. Two Brooklyn Elementary students, Grade 6 Mara Ivankovic and Grade 7 Jackson Slater, spoke about what they learned during the program. Slater said he loved having baby Elliot in his class, noting his favourite part Cont. on Page 4

25th annual Miracle Weekend brings in $17.9 million for BC’s kids
Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com This year in the month of June, fishing the local lakes has been described as improving by many anglers. The public boat launches in Campbell River are quite active as the weather turned for the better and anglers were 24.8 lb. Salmon caught at Shelter Point getting out. Shelter Point is an area where anglers are fishing. Peter Woodward caught a 30-pound spring the first week of June. The winter springs are being caught at Kitty Coleman and Bates Beach and the fish size ranges anywhere from 14 to 30 pounds. Anglers have also had good catches of salmon on the south end of Denman Island and at Deep Bay. Some nice trout have been caught at Roberts Lake trolling along the east side of the lake. This lake is hard to fish at times because of the wind and guys getting out are trolling deep to get to the big ones. If you’re fishing north of Campbell River, try Stella Lake which is located on the Elk Main logging road close to 20 kms off the main highway. This road is rough most of the time but is well used in summer. Signs are posted along the way and Stella Lake will be a good destination to try fishing in weeks to come. If you know a member of the Courtenay Fish and Game Association, a great spot to get the kids fishing is the stocked pond located near the clubhouse. This pond is stocked with fish and is easily accessible, even using a wheel chair, so everyone can enjoy a day out fishing. In Campbell River, the Quinsam River was recently stocked with thousands of fingerlings and about 500 larger trout.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation raised $17,939,688 for BC Children’s Hospital during the 25th annual Miracle Weekend, hosted by Global BC TV on June 2-3, setting a new record. Miracle Weekend events have raised over $188 million for the hospital since the first Miracle Weekend was held in 1988. Overwaitea Food
said John Ridley, BC Children’s Hospital Miracle Weekend chair. “Children who benefited from the support of donors 25 years ago are now adults, contributing to society in their own way. Today’s donors are paying it forward to the next generation of BC’s children.” Miracle Weekend is the culmination of fundraising efforts throughout the year by
literally hundreds of diverse groups. Events include everything from school fundraisers to golf tournaments to black-tie galas. The hospital receives support from employee groups in financial services, retail, mining, technology, professional associations, construction and real estate, hospitality and restaurants, forestry and others, and
members of Children’s Hospital’s employee family. Annual events, such as Jeans DayTM, Slo-Pitch, ChildRun, A World of Smiles Telethon on Shaw and the 98.5 The OCEAN radiothon contributed to the total. BC Children’s Hospital is the province’s only full-service acute-care hospital dedicated to serving close to one million children living in BC and the Yukon.
Infants have big impact on school-age kids From Page 3 was when he and his classmates got to hold Elliot. “And, like, to see the eyes of the kids just light up when they got him — it was really special to see the love that a baby can generate,” added Slater. “When he came in over the different lessons, I could see how he’s grown and how he’s changed and
it was just really cool, to like — now I can appreciate how special a baby is.” Brooklyn coprincipal Sherry Kennedy has been involved in the ROE program for many years; her daughter was an ROE baby, there was a ROE program in her class when she was a teacher and she’s an ROE instructor. “This is a program
that we need to have continue in our district,” said Kennedy, adding she considers the connection between the kids and the babies the most important part of the program. “When we go around that circle at the start of the lesson and I see my big tough Grade 7s get down there and wiggle the toes and make eye contact and the baby
responds, it’s just such a powerful moment for those kids.” ROE baby Rubie’s mother Leanne Scrase said she would recommend the program to other parents, adding Rubie responded well, but it was the school-aged kids who demonstrated the largest impact. “I saw the love the kids had for my baby and it was huge, you

With fun and sun comes IBC’s water safety tips Summer long holiday weekends and warm days are here and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is offering tips to help Canadians to stay safe while enjoying water activities. “Being out in the water can be a lot of fun. But we need to remember that accidents do happen. This is why it’s important to review a few simple water safety tips every year,” says Lindsay Olson, Vice President, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with IBC. According to Canadian Red Cross, on average, more than 500 people drown every year in Canada. This significant number of water-related fatalities
reinforces the need for water safety education. Here are some water safety tips that will help you and your family enjoy this summer: ● Be aware of the risks in your region. Some areas may have significant snow melt resulting in high water flows. Be extra cautious around fast-flowing rivers and streams. ● Supervise children at all times. ● When swimming be aware of your limitations. Don’t go beyond your ability. ● Think before you dive. Ensure water depth is at least 10 feet deep. Remember the depth of lakes or oceans can change due to tides or seasons. ● When in, on and around water, have everyone try on their
lifejacket to see that it still fits and that all the zippers and buckles are in good working order. Lifejackets do save lives. ● When boating, always wear a lifejacket. Even in nice weather, even close to shore. ● Boat sober, “don’t booze and cruise” on the water. ● Familiarize yourself with basic lifesaving skills such as CPR in case of emergency. ● All water parks and facilities should have a general set of security regulations for you to follow. Please read the rules! ● Keep emergency equipment and first aid kits close at hand. ● Know before you go. Check the weather forecast before you go
out on the water. (Source: Canadian Red Cross and Lifesaving Society) For more tips on water safety visit www.ibc.ca/en/ In_the_Community/ Boating_Safety/ About Insurance Bureau of Canada. Insurance Bureau of Canada is the national industry association representing Canada’s private home, car and business insurers. Its member companies represent 90% of the property and casualty insurance market in Canada. The industry employs over 114,000 Canadians, pays more than $7 billion in taxes to the federal, provincial and municipal governments, and has a total premium base of $40 billion.

SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA? BELL LIFESTYLES
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.
PROCESS
To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 #23 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

I had terrible Acne for 3 years and tried Benzoyl Peroxide, Proactiv, Aloe Vera and others. After 4 days taking the Bell natural product #60 it started to clear up my skin. My skin changed from terrible to beautiful. Mylene Theriault, 19, Sorel-Tracy, QC In 2 days my son’s face completely cleared up of acne. My son is 15 and suffered for 3 years. We used many products like laser, Clean Clear, Neem that did not work or burned his skin. Veronica Marden, Seminole, TX Unbelievable acne free beautiful skin Last couple of years I had acne and tried every product like Murad, Proactiv and antibiotics. Results with #60 were unbelievable. Thanks for giving me beautiful skin and my self-esteem. Nelisa Royer, 28, Doral, FL Within 6 days eczema cleared up completely. I believe #60 addresses the cause internally instead of the symptoms. Latifa Boutshik, 43, North York, ON I had severe psoriasis over 95% of my body. Last 5 years I have stunned every doctor and dermatologist. I spent tons of money on remedies. After I got Bell #60, I’ve never seen anything work as fast in my life. Within 2 days I saw my skin clearing up. I’m speechless. It was inexpensive compared with what I spent before. Jessica Shantz, 25, Dawson Creek, BC All statements made on the Bell website are sent by delighted users. All are real people. Most have listed phone numbers and can be called for advice. No money is paid to them. Their reward is the relief they are getting. All say #60 works within days not months, not years. It’s more effective than what they used before. It is less expensive (some acne suppliers ship monthly and charge monthly, which may amount to large sums yearly). No side effects were reported on #60. No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

Raz continues to make his mark J.R. Rardon Black Press PORT HARDY— Artist Mehran “Raz” Razmpoosh first left his
mark on Port Hardy in 2006 with a mural on a large fuel tank at IV’s Marina. At the request of a local lodge owner,
Raz is back to mark what has become increasingly his home territory. “I live where I work,” said Razmpoosh, a 52-yearold, Iranian-born painter who recently returned to the North Island from Vancouver, where he spent the winter while painting a series of murals for the Squamish Nation. He is back at the request of Lloyd McGill, owner of Great Bear Lodge in Smith Inlet. McGill, impressed with Raz’s images of leaping Orcas and soaring eagles on the
marina fuel tank and a similar tank mural Raz painted at the Hyde Creek Esso station in 2010, called the artist this spring to paint the twin tanks in front of his building at the local seaplane dock. “There’s nothing more ugly than a fuel tank,” said McGill. “This boy here has been coming up (to Port Hardy) for a number of years, and we decided we just had to paint those tanks.” But what started as another set of tank murals turned into a windfall for Raz, who heads a group of artists known as Group of
One. One day when the weather prevented Raz from working on the outdoor tanks, McGill asked him if he could cover the inside wall of the McGill’s building at the dock, which serves as office and waiting area for lodgebound clients, with a
mural of the inlet and the lodge. That led to additional plans to wrap the exterior of the building in murals of wildlife images currently printed on the lodge’s brochures. “You can only do the tanks when the weather’s good,” said
Artist Raz — Mehran Razmpoosh — perches atop one of two fuel tanks he is painting at the Port Hardy seaplane dock.

He has created large murals at Fort Rupert Elementary School, the North Coast Trail Hostel and Port Hardy swimming pool in addition to the tank in Hyde Creek, just off Highway 19 south of Port McNeill. All of the tank murals feature his distinctive blue, white and black images of Orcas frolicking in the sea, with both underwater and abovesurface elements. For the seaplane dock tanks, which sit just off Hardy Bay Road near the water’s edge, he made it a point to orient the water line of the murals with the actual

Terry Fox Run organizers needed immediately in both Sointula and Woss Lake Courage, ambition, and spirit are just a few characteristics that Terry Fox possessed and selflessly devoted towards his ultimate goal - to outrun cancer. “I’m going to do my very best. I’ll fight. I promise I won’t give up, Fox said after running for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres across Canada during his Marathon of Hope
to help find a cure for cancer. Communities all across Canada will be participating in the Terry Fox Run this year; however, the communities of both Sointula and Woss might not take part in Terry’s tradition if these communities cannot find Run Organizers for this year. “It would be such a
shame for the people of Sointula and Woss Lake to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community, no matter how big or small, can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000, says Donna White, provincial director for the Terry
Fox Foundation BC & Yukon. “The Terry Fox Foundation funds research in all kinds of cancer, believing as Terry did, that we need to conquer this disease once and for all. With help from people all across the world, money fundraised in Fox’s name has made The Terry Fox Foundation a national investor in
cancer research. “When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $24 million for cancer research ... there’s no reason that isn’t possible, Fox said before he died. Since the Marathon of Hope in 1980, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $600 million and has helped to
