Make sure to shower before the wedding

A bridal shower really isn’t complete without bridalshower favours. It’s one of those occasions when you want to give your closest friends and family some kind of gift because you care about them — and because they care about you. Those in the know about gifting say you should get the appropriate gift for the occasion. To do this, first determine the theme you want for your party. Let’s explore the themes and some of the gifts that correspond well with them. One popular shower theme is a tea party. Tea is typically served to guests with various specialty pastries or mini-sandwiches. Guests are sometimes asked to wear a hat and gloves, while the bride-to-be decks out in an Alice in Wonderlandstyle dress. Another interesting theme is the room-of-the-house. For example, guests are sometimes assigned different rooms in the house and are expected to bring gifts suited to that room. As a guest, you might bring a gift that will make that room more comfortable and appealing. Another example would be a quality kitchen appliance for the kitchen of the house. A variation of this theme for a wedding shower is the

stock-the-bar version. Guests bring specialty alcoholic beverages to stock the newlyweds’ bar. Another interesting choice is a wine-tasting theme. As the name implies, anything wine-related is suitable as a gift; however the gift options don’t need to be limited to the wine type. You can buy silver heart wine stoppers, candles, mini-cocktail shakers or even wine glasses. A lingerie-themed party is yet another popular choice. The room is set with candles, chocolates and roses everywhere and could include red floor pillows for guests to sit on. Guests bring gifts of lingerie for the bride. For a honeymoon-themed party, the focus is on the destination chosen by the couple. Wedding shower gifts for this theme would depend on the destination — but don’t have to be limited to this. Guests can bring airplane luggage tags, black book city guides and even customlabelled bottled water. Another kind of bridal party theme is a pajama party. Guests come in their pajamas and appropriate gifts would including such choices as monogrammed cosmetic cases, personalized slippers or personalized toiletry bags. These are only a few examples to help you with ideas. Once you start looking into what is available for the theme you have chosen, it will become apparent to you which flavour is the right one for your party.

Take time to enjoy preparations Anyone who thinks a wedding can be planned without suffering from stress has obviously never gone down that road. However, only someone who is rested and relaxed can be a blushing bride. So, here are a few tips to keep stress to a minimum right through the lengthy preparations for the big day: Always stick to your budget as a lot of stress is related to finances. Before doing anything, discuss the budget with your fiancé so you are both clear about what your limits are. Another good idea is to shop around suppliers and shops to get the most for your money. Take time for yourself between dress fittings and other appointments related to the wedding. Resist the temptation to control everything and delegate as much as you can. It goes without saying you should keep the most important decisions for yourself and your fiancé, but family and friends can help with less important things. Despite all the things you have to do, be sure to set some time aside for physical activity. Try to do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day, which will not only be great for your mood, but for your appearance as well. Even if you’d love to be at your ideal weight for the

wedding, don’t start a strict diet. You should keep in mind that you’ll need lots of energy to get through all those preparations, so opt for eating reasonable and balanced portions instead of dieting.

Create an online registry

Different stores offer many different types of giftregistry services for your wedding. However, since the services they offer can vary, take the time to shop around before finalizing your choice. The main services you can expect are gift-wrapping, delivery, updating your registry on the Internet, etc. The advantage of Internet service is that it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from everywhere around the world. Your guests can access your gift registry and choose a gift that suits their budget from your selection. In addition, the registry is updated automatically. Determine your needs and make your list to get a better idea of the type of store that offers what you want. Even if you plan to include gifts in different price ranges to accommodate different budgets, always select quality items in a classic style that will last longer. Once you have selected the store, make an appointment to register about six months before your wedding. Check to see if the items can be crossed off by telephone and if the store offers Internet service.

Traditional or contemporary — you By Tobias Lutton SPECIAL TO KTW There are many brides who thrive on traditional weddings. This type of bride is all about formal invitations, stylish bridal portraits and special first-dance songs. She yearns to walk down the church aisle to Here Comes the Bride while hundreds of her friends and family members gaze upon the beauty of her classic wedding dress. And, then there is the other kind of bride, the freethinking, non-conforming lady. The woman who doesn’t follow convention for convention’s sake. The one who has always marched to the beat of her own drum. It is this independently minded lady who will likely opt to stroll down the aisle in a wedding dress that daringly departs from all convention. If this woman is you, here are some ideas about wedding-dress features you may want to consider for your upcoming nuptials: • One-shoulder ball gowns: There are plenty of strappy and strapless wedding dresses out there, but you rarely see any single-strap styles. Platinum offers a dress with a strap that stretches over the left shoulder.

The strap attaches at the hand-draped bodice with an eye-catching jeweled brooch. • Above-the-knee hemlines: If your goal is to make your female wedding guests flush and your male guests gawk, just show off your legs with an above-the-knee skirt. The strapless silk radzimir dress has a hem that stops about two inches short of the knee. The tulip skirt shows off numerous Venice Lace floral appliqués, which nicely complement the corset seamed bodice. • Lavender-coloured: Almost every wedding dress ever made is white, offwhite, eggshell or some other shade of the white-hued family. Platinum offers a silk satin fit to flare strapless gown which is available in lavender. This dress also comes with a full-pleated train and a jewel-encrusted hip and bust line. • Cotton lace overlay: While most dresses are basic silk, satin or tulle, some are nestled underneath an overlay of cotton lace to create a more textured appearance. Melissa Sweet’s Hallie style dress features a silk charmeuse strapless gown underneath a sheer French lace overlay.

can dress it up It’s accented by woven ribbon detail over the hem and bodice as well as a sweep inset train. • Ultra-slim gown: While slim wedding gowns do not flare outward around the legs, ultra-slim gowns practically cling to the legs. Such is the case with Vineyard’s tatum-style guipure lace slim gown, which portrays the illusion of pants as the bride walks down the aisle. The dress also comes with slit detail, a large waistband, and a bow at the back. • Scarf accessory: While this isn’t part of the wedding dress itself, a scarf accessory can have a substantial impact on the entire nuptial ensemble. • Flounced halter neckline: Standard halter wedding dresses are not all that unusual, but a flounced halter leaves no doubt as to whom the center of attention is at the event. A flounced halter neckline contrasts nicely with the dress’s open back. • Pockets: On a wedding dress? Really. They’re perfect for a bride who wants to carry something old, new, borrowed, and/or blue down the aisle with her; and also come in handy during the “dollar dance” at the wedding reception.

Let them all eat CAKE

A tiered wedding cake is often a fitting conclusion to a wedding reception. Today’s brides and grooms are experimenting with cake flavors and designs so their cake is a unique representation of their persona as a couple. It’s no longer necessary to stick with a white cake with buttercream frosting for your wedding day. Think about exploring other flavor and filling combinations that will tempt the guests’ taste buds. For those who can’t settle on just one flavor, how about having a different flavor for each layer? Couples getting married in the fall may want to think about a spice cake that evokes the feelings of sipping a mug of spiced cider. Cream cheese frosting is often a pairing with spice cake, or think about a layer of caramel that will make it taste like you’re enjoying a candied Halloween apple. A hummingbird cake may fit the bill for a spring wedding. This is made with mashed bananas, pineapples and chopped pecans. tiered wedding cake is often a fitting conclusion to a wedding reception. a pairing with spice cake, or think about a layer of caramel that will make it taste like you’re enjoying a candied Halloween apple. A hummingbird cake may fit the bill for a spring wedding. This is

made with mashed bananas, pineapples and chopped pecans. This cake is perfect when paired with cream cheese frosting. Yellow or white cake are universal favorites for weddings. Some pizzazz can be added through the use of creative fillings. Consider something citrusy and summery for a summer wedding. Raspberry preserves or lemon curd are tart and sweet. For a tropical flair, mangoes or passion fruit can be mixed with touches of coconut. A winter wedding can be accented with rich flavors, like a decadent chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache and black cherries — in a black forest style. Those toasting to the good life may want an almond cake enhanced with some fine liqueur and simple chocolate buttercream. Couples should sit down with their baker and sample a number of flavor combinations to determine a recipe that works for them. Pastry companies also may be able to develop a cake that encompasses a couple’s favorite flavors or symbolizes a special moment in their lives. A Boston cream pie-inspired cake may liven up the wedding of a couple who became engaged in Boston. Maybe a cannoli cream filled cake will usher in memories of a trip to Italy. Kids at heart can enjoy candy confection cakes filled with gooey chocolate, nuts and marshmallows. Whatever the case, couples can use their cake as a centerpiece that wows the senses of taste as well as vision. Consider displaying this culinary masterpiece on a table with the seating cards placed around it so that it can be enjoyed the entire night.

A diamond: Symbol of love The joy of selecting wedding rings is as precious as the feelings that unite you. Because you will wear these rings for a long time, it is normal to pay special attention and invest time in their selection. Make sure you deal with a reputable jeweller who guarantees the quality of the merchandise. Examine the warranty and after-sale service carefully. You should also insist on a professional evaluation of the ring and wedding bands you want to purchase. When it comes to engagement rings, diamonds dominate the selection. There are four key features to consider when appraising the diamond on your engagement ring: Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Because every diamond is unique, it is given as a symbol of precious and eternal love. Even though other precious stones are available, diamonds are the most popular gems for a wedding. Admittedly, this symbol of undying and eternal love possesses a mysterious splendour that is unique. This unbreakable, precious stone sparkles with a thousand points of light that dazzle the eyes and delight the heart. The quality of the gold, or silver, content in the rings is another important selection criterion. In addition, the style must suit your fingers: A delicate model for fine hands and a more elaborate style for stronger hands.

Money vows for newlyweds A sound financial plan is one way to make the honeymoon last forever. Eighty-six per cent of couples admit they argue about money, according to a survey by Torque Customer Strategy. “It’s important to figure out from the beginning how you will manage finances as a couple,” says Liz Lunney, senior vice-president of Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada, a subsidiary of Franklin Templeton Investments. “Sitting down with a financial advisor and figuring out a budget can help avoid issues in the future.” Decide how to pay the mortgage or rent and monthly bills. Does a joint chequing account make sense or should one spouse pay bills and the other put away savings? Figure out what works best. Ensure you financially plan for large purchases and check with your spouse before buying a high-priced item.

Take care of debt. Many couples are surprised when they tally their debt. Build a plan to manage liabilities. Start with the highest interest items and make paying these off a priority in the beginning years of marriage. Save for a rainy day. The future is unpredictable so ensure you have an emergency savings account in place. This will provide security in the event of unemployment, health problems or other unforeseen expenses. Contribute a small percentage of each paycheque to a separate savings account. Speak to your financial advisor about ways to invest savings and emergency funds without taking on too much risk. If one spouse earns a higher income, they can contribute to a registered retirement savings plan in their spouse’s name, providing there is contribution room. The higher-earner’s taxable income will be reduced by the contribution amount, leading to significant tax savings.

Top 5 Newest Wedding Dance Songs By Linda Dunkelberger SPECIAL TO KTW Your music makes your moments. Work with your wedding dance band to choose the wedding dance songs and the memories you want to have forever. The first dance is reserved for the bride and groom and this music is “their” song (first choice of the wedding dance songs). There is also a choice for the father/daughter wedding dance songs, the wedding dance songs for mother and son (mother and groom) and wedding dance songs for both sets of parents (with the bride and groom dancing with their new in-laws before reuniting). The last dance, like the first, belongs to the bride and groom alone. The music is usually the one used for the first dance, but choices for the last wedding dance songs of the night may be chosen. For your reference, listed below are the Top 5 Most Requested Wedding Dance Songs.

• Lucky by Jason Mraz, featuring Colbie Caillet. Who will like it: The bride and groom and the rest of the lovebirds. When to play it: For the first wedding dance song. • Viva La Vida by Coldplay. How to choose the perfect tuxedo By Janine Giorgenti SPECIAL TO KTW You have proposed marriage to the woman of your dreams. Her acceptance means that, now, you must prepare for the big day! You will stand beside your bride in that picture-perfect moment, a snapshot in time that will forever adorn your mantel. Choosing the perfect tuxedo and accessories is vital, thus making the task daunting. Here are some guidelines to make it easier for you to choose the perfect formal wear for your wedding. 1. Get with the theme — and don’t forget the bride! Don’t look out of place at your own wedding. Weddings can have themes ranging from The Great Gatsby, to Art Deco, from Renaissance to Nouveau. It’s your party and you’re the co-star. So, dress the part! Choose a tuxedo that complements your bride’s gown. For instance, if it’s a traditional wedding, dress in a classic tux. If it is a modern wedding or themed wedding, dress according to the theme and style. 2) Don’t sweat it! Consider the climate and time of year. If you are getting married in the south in midsummer, you should go with a lighter, more breathable fabric. If your theme is a beach wedding, opt for white instead of the traditional black tux. In winter months, a traditional tux may do the trick. 3. Like night and day. Are you planning an evening or daytime wedding? The general rule is that evening weddings or those after 6 p.m. are considered more formal. Such a wedding calls for full dress, including tux, tuxedo shirt, cummerbund or vest, tie or bow tie, cufflinks and studs and tuxedo shoes. Daytime weddings can be less formal. Although a tux is still appropriate, some couples opt for a dressy suit with tuxedo accessories. 4. It’s all about you! Find your personal style and show some flair, whether it is the style of your tux shirt or the cufflinks and studs that you choose. A touch here and there can really make the look your own.

5. Don’t be late for your own wedding! Don’t procrastinate! This is not something you sit on until a couple of weeks before your wedding. Finding the right tuxedo takes time, as do fittings to make it look just right. Alterations can take a few weeks. If you’re having the tux custom made, allow two months. 6. It just ain’t fitting! Make sure it fits. There should be no pulling, puckering, sagging or drooping. The length should cover your socks when you are walking, but not puddle on the floor when you are standing. A professional will be able to help you make the right choices and get a fit that will be both comfortable and flattering. 7. Ahhhhhh, this feels good! Yes, you can be comfortable in a tuxedo, if it fits well and is made from a nice, high-quality fabric. When you figure in the photo sessions, the wedding ceremony and the reception, not to mention all that dancing, you will be wearing this tuxedo for quite a while. 8. When a little “bling” will do! Tuxedo shirts require cufflinks and studs. Here is where you can flaunt your personal taste, by choosing from simple gold knots to gorgeous inlays. You don’t have to spend a fortune. Unless the set is under a jeweler’s loupe, costume cufflinks and studs will achieve the same look. 9. Who wants pre-owned, anyway? Consider buying rather than renting. A tuxedo is no more expensive than a good quality suit. You would never rent a suit, so why rent a tux? The fit will look better and the fabric will feel great on a tuxedo that you buy or have made. Most importantly, you get to keep it. 10. You Are my sunshine! Polish and shine! Shoes finish off your look. Make sure they are clean and polished. Black patent leather is the standard. Don’t forget to break them in if they are new. The last thing you want to think about during this momentous occasion is how much your feet hurt. Enjoy yourself and have the time of your life!
