Creating coolness in the garden

The very best food for any plant is wellbalanced organic matter obtained from domestic compost. This mixture will change depending on what your family eats, but it will always be beneficial for your garden.

And because domestic compost is made from readily available plant waste, it won’t cost you a cent!

A water garden is also a great way to add coolness to a backyard. This kind of project entails a lot of work, of course, but the results are bound to be very satisfying. You could also think about adding a pump with a water jet to your pond. This will not only help to lower the water temperature but will also aerate the water for the benefit of your aquatic plants.

Once mixed in, compost gives more consistency to sandy soils and improves their ability to retain moisture. It helps aerate clay soils, making them easier to work with, and it also contains high levels of good bacteria to help you in your gardening efforts. In other words, compost will increase your garden’s productivity.

An easy care yard If you think that easy care yards can’t be as beautiful as those that require lots of work, then think again! This type of garden is perfect for busy people or for those who hate cutting grass, watering, pruning, and weeding but who would still love to have a magnificent property. Low maintenance is the perfect solution for disabled people, seniors, and two-career families. Best of all, an easy care yard allows you to go on vacation without having to worry about your precious plants!

A good example of this type of yard is one composed primarily of attractive gravel and rocks in which drought-tolerant plants are grown. Just a few plants, such as lavender and thyme, are sufficient to create a stunning effect. There is no need to spend hours after work and on weekends tending to the backyard, as care is limited to a bit of pruning now and then in order to control growth.

Weeds are not a problem if the layer of gravel is thick enough, and a weed-free future is even more likely if you take the time to install a geotextile weed barrier before laying the gravel. When you want to plant, just push aside some gravel and cut a hole in the weed barrier with a sharp knife. Of course, you will want to opt for hardy species that won’t constantly attract unwanted insects.

Weeds are no cause for panic Dandelions have made many a homeowner’s hair turn gray, and desperate battles to get rid of them have been known to involve harsh chemicals, flame throwers, and very expensive gadgets. A weed is defined as an unwanted plant, which arrives by chance in our yard or garden. Typically, weeds don’t pose any true threat to gardens or lawns. So, before running to the garden centre to find some herbicide, here are a few tricks to help you prevent and control the growth of these adventitious plants.

Spreading a layer of organic mulch is the best way to prevent the growth of undesirable plants in flower beds and vegetable plots. Whether you use shredded dead leaves, cocoa shells, bark chips, or straw, mulch will prevent many weeds from spreading. Mulch has the added benefit of

There are many reasons for a cat’s frequent visits to your backyard: there might be field mice to hunt, loose, freshly turned soil to turn into a giant litter box, or warm mulch and tree trunks to sharpen claws on.

Protecting your garden is a more viable solution than trying to chase cats away.

Here are a few tips.

1. Plant species that repel cats. Rue officinale and coleus canina have particular scents that cats do not appreciate. Felines won’t linger where these plants are grown.

2. Cats can also be discouraged by obstacles. Lay chicken wire, jute cloth, or prickly stems from rose plants over the soil. Kitty’s afternoon siestas in your vegetable plot will no longer be so cozy!

3. Sprinkle pepper on the soil after watering. If you do this on a regular basis at the beginning of the summer, cats will find somewhere else to go for the rest of the season. Experts say that pepper is more effective than some store products sold for this purpose.

4. Without resorting to cruelty, there is one radical measure that works temporarily.

A short squirt from a garden hose is sure to scare a cat away, at least for a while.

Weeds that develop in the lawn are often the result of cutting the grass too short. A mulching lawn mower or garden tractor is the ideal solution in this situation. Just mow the grass to a height of 7.5 centimetres during the summer and leave the grass clippings on the ground.

In order to control their growth, undesirable plants that are already established must be pulled out before they produce seeds. This weeding will only be effective if you succeed in removing all the roots. Specially designed tools for the removal of dandelions, including their long roots, can be found at garden centers and hardware stores.

Scalding weeds repeatedly could be an effective method for removing them from the edge of a path.

Some weeds are invasive and need to be strictly controlled. Try digging them up repeatedly, or cover them with black plastic for a while. The use of an herbicide should be avoided as much as possible, because of their impact on the environment and the danger they pose to pets and children.

Even if you don’t have very much space, it is still possible to create an easy care yard that is visually pleasing. Potted plants can be placed in strategic spots around the yard and can be brought inside during winter, if the species permits. You could, for example, create a grouping of echeveria in a container or two. This plant loves full sun and can survive very well all on its own, with only a bit of appreciation from its owner!

Whether it belongs to you or to your neighbours, it seems like there’s always at least one very persistent cat trying to claim a flower bed as an outdoor litter box. No matter how cute the little kitty is, it’s no fun when he does his business on freshly planted flowers!
