RCMP searching for person responsible for setting truck on fire

On Feb 12, 2012, a report of a burnt abandoned pickup was received by the police.

The truck was found by Hidden Valley Rd near the gravel pit. The police attended the scene and determined that a 2007, D3500, Dodge, dually pickup had been totally destroyed by the arson.

The owner of the truck was out of the country on a cruise at the time.

Premier Christy Clark today announced a $50,000 community gaming grant to the Community Connections Society of Southeast B.C., which opened the doors of its new Kootenay Child Development Centre (KCDC) in Cranbrook earlier this year. “This centre is exactly what Kootenay-based families need and we are proud to support the completion of this important community facility,â€? said Premier Clark. “Every parent knows how difÂżcult it is to juggle life’s many demands, and every moment that can be spared is valuable. But what is most important is that children receive the care they need in a timely way, with the least amount of stress on parents.â€?

The new facility centralizes a number of health and development services for children, reducing travel time for parents and allowing them to access comprehensive supports in one building. The centre is not yet fully operational, and this funding will enable the KCDC to enhance its existing programs and services.

In January 2012, Premier Clark increased the annual base budget for community gaming grants by $15 million to $135 million per year into the future. “Since 2001, our government has provided more than $1.5 billion in gaming revenues to community-based organizations so they can continue to enrich the lives of British Columbians and support B.C. families,â€? said Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Ida Chong. “NonproÂżt groups provide vital services that this government values tremendously and, despite current Âżscal challenges, we have increased gaming grants in our annual base budget to a total of $135 million. Last year, this funding reached right across the province with a large part going outside of the Lower Mainland to more than 5,300 organizations in hundreds of communities.â€? “There are a lot of isolated, rural communities in the Kootenay region and having to drive long distances for various appointments can put a strain on families, espe-

One case that proves that helmets can mitigate serious injury A message from Patti Dolan, executive director for the East Kootenay Brain Injury Association.

Easter Sunday ... April 24, 2011 - 8:11 a.m. I will never forget the words: “Your husband has had a fall and is being transported to Fernie hospital. You better come immediately.”

February 28, 2012...

Again, words that still haunt me: “Your daughter has fallen on the ski hill and is being transported to Cranbrook hospital by ambulance with a head injury.”

We had always purchased helmets for our kids growing up on

the Kimberley ski hill but once they became teenagers all we could do was trust that they wore them. That day in emergency the ambulance attendants and doctors con¿rmed that it was that helmet that prevented Abi from a potentially disasterous accident.

Eleven months previous Joe had fallen from a machine at the mine where he was a heavy duty mechanic and sustained a basal skull fracture and frontal lobe brain injury.

The brain injury staff at Foothills told us this was going to be a marathon recovery and it

has taken the expertise of specialist doctors, nursing staff, physical therapists, occupational therapists, counsellors and community support services.

The bottom line is that brains need to be protected and in these two cases both were wearing helmets but injuries still occur and it’s a lifechanging experience.

I am previleged to be working with the East Kootenay Brain injury association and we have so much to offer. June is Brain Injury Awareness month. Please join us by becoming a member or calling for information.

Cranbrook Food Bank building new warehouse in city A new 4,000 square foot warehouse is currently being built at 572 Industrial Road 2.

The new facility enables the Cranbrook Food Bank Society to better store food and supplies for the Cranbrook Food Bank, which provides 4,500 hampers per year to Cranbrook and area (Jaffray, Wardner, Yahk and RDEK

Ducks Unlimited invests $850,000 near Creston Submitted Wildlife conservation efforts in southeast B.C. received a big boost today with a new agreement between the Province and Ducks Unlimited Canada to jointly operate the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area for the next 30 years.

Ducks Unlimited Canada will invest $850,000 in the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in 2012 to improve wetland habitats and upgrade the site’s water management.

The work will include a detailed restoration plan, increased community engagement, a longterm strategic plan, and an evaluation of public education and outreach programs.

“Ducks Unlimited Canada is looking forward to working with the ministry and Creston Valley WMA staff to restore and improve the site’s outstanding wetland habitats. This area is home to hundreds of fascinating animal and plant species that will bene¿t from this partnership for many years

to come,” said Brad Arner, manager of provincial operations for Ducks Unlimited Canada in B.C In 2008, the provincial government initiated a review of the Creston Valley WMA’s management structure and ¿nancial sustainability. As a result of that review, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will designate the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area under the Wildlife Act and bring its governance structure into line with B.C.’s 22 other WMAs. The partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada will put the facility on a more sound ¿nancial footing and allow the site to thrive as an internationally recognized nature sanctuary for decades to come.

property that has been recognized by the provincial government as having particular ecological signi¿cance. The designation of a WMA under the Wildlife Act promotes the protection, conservation and management of important species and habitats within that area. * The Creston Valley WMA is located in a natural Àood plain between the Purcell and Selkirk mountains, just south of Kootenay Lake.

It covers 7,000 hectares and features lakes, diked marshlands, sloughs and areas containing grass-

lands, shrubs and forests. * There are currently 23 wildlife management areas throughout British Columbia. They range in size from 17 hectares (the Coquitlam River WMA) to over 122,000 hectares (the Todagin WMA). * The provincial government has established similar partnerships with Ducks Unlimited Canada in other wildlife management areas in B.C., such as the PittAddington Marsh WMA in the Fraser Valley.

And it wasn’t just outstanding music, Ballet Jorgen’s Anastasia, and Vancouver’s renowned Arts Club Theatre with their Buddy Holly both ¿lled the House, and even Noises Off, starring all local talent, brought in over 1,200 people during its hilarious run.

What most people don’t realize is that the Key City Theatre, a non-pro¿t society, has only 4 full-time staff.

The theatre would either have to charge ‘big city’ prices or close if it wasn’t for the hundred volunteers who usher and run the concession at every show, donors, and the season’s sponsors, A&W, Northstar GM, RBC Foundation, Pepsi, Prestige Hotels and Resorts, Spring Honda, St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino, Xerox, and especially Falkins Insurance, the theatre’s Major Season Sponsor. “I don’t think people realize how important our volunteers, donors, and sponsors are,� said Managing Director, Patrick LeBlanc. “We do receive a grant from the City of Cranbrook, but most theatres in this province are City owned and they receive much more funding than we do from their municipalities and they have way more staff.

We’re pretty tired by June but what an amazing season this has been, and next year will be just as amazing�.

Steelworkers union signs deal with Teck

By Timothy Schafer The sun is shining a little brighter this week now that the details of the deal Local 480 of the United Steelworkers union signed Friday have sunk in.

On Friday the membership gave its loudest ringing endorsement on a deal that they ever have, with 87.9 per cent of the membership (778 members) that voted saying ‘Yes’ to the tentative collective agreement struck one week prior, with 104 against.

With 885 members voting—80 per cent of the total membership— it was obvious the deal the negotiators had reached with the management of Teck Trail Operations was one they wanted, said Armindo deMedeiros, Local 480 vice president. “It was one of the highest ratiÂżcation votes we ever had. It’s the highest I’ve ever seen here,â€? he said.

Teck Trail Operations and locals 480 and 9705 of the United Steelworkers put Âżnal signatures on the new collective agreement for Trail operations after one month of negotiations that began in earnest April 30.

The agreement was ratiÂżed and commences June 1, running through to May 31, 2017, replacing the three-year agreement that expired May 31.

The agreement was a departure from past deals, said deMedeiros, being one year longer than the customary four the union typically signs, and included the biggest signing bonus the union has ever pulled in at $10,000.

But the bonus and the longer contract duration was what the membership wanted, he said, after a priority sheet put out to its membership earlier in the year listed them as top priorities heading into negotiations.

Considering what Teck unions on other properties had signed for—including Sparwood, Fording River and Elkview—in their negotiations in the last few months, Local 480 was right in line with their demands.

Traditionally the Trail union liked to negotiate with any extra money asked for being put into wages or the pension, but for this time around the signing bonus was pretty high on the priority list, deMedeiros said. “Everybody seemed to want that money,â€? he said. “Right from the very beginning the membership was on us that they wanted the same (as the other unions). So our hands were pretty tied on that one. If we didn’t deliver ‌ I don’t think the contract would have gone through without that signing bonus.â€?

The change in negotiation strategy was generated by a younger workforce, he added.

The evolution in the age of the workforce has also brought the air of a new era to the work environment at Teck, said deMedeiros, as well as between the company and the union. “The membership is content and we are leaning towards a younger workforce right now so, for a lot of them, it’s their Âżrst big paying

Make the Grass Greener on Your Side of the Fence With the large amounts of rain we have been getting in the Kootenays lately, lawns are starting to look lush and green. Unfortunately, in some cases more unwelcome plants, such as clover and dandelions, are also taking advantage of the great growing conditions and emerging among the blades of grass.

A good offence can be a great defence against these “invaders� – a healthy, vigorous lawn that is well fertilized and maintained can usually crowd out weeds and keep disease at bay. The key elements in lawn care are watering, mowing and fertilizing.

Water as early in the morning as possible, when winds are calmest and temperatures lowest. Water only when the lawn is dry and apply an amount that will soak in deeply. If you have underground sprinklers, adjust to the seasonal needs of grass, don’t just set it and forget it.

Mow frequently enough so just the top third of the blade is removed, and for most lawns you can leave the clippings on the lawn, as clippings provide nutrients as well as a small amount of moisture. The key to lawn fertilization is to feed your lawn lightly but more frequently. A light application once every 4 to 6 weeks will keep the lawn healthier than feeding heavily once or twice a year.

And how about lawn diseases and pests? There is sometimes confusion with homeowners when it comes to diagnosing lawn diseases as many disease symptoms are similar to injured turf. Dead patches can be caused by disease, but also by drought, debris buried below the turf, dog urine, fertilizer burn or spills.

Damaged grass blades caused by mowing a lawn with a dull lawn mower will also appear to be disease-like symptoms. So how do you know? Diseases will often occur at random and if symptoms follow patterns from mowing or spraying, they most likely are not caused by disease.

Is your lawn developing brown patches that seem to be getting larger? Is the dead grass easy to pull out in these spots? Have you noticed little moths ying around when you are mowing the lawn? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may have a sod webworm attacking your lawn.

Sod webworm is the larval stage of that moth you saw and it feeds just under the surface destroying the roots of the lawn.

BeneďŹ cial nematodes are microscopic ‘goodguy’ predators that will attack and begin to destroy the sod webworm in 48 hours. They are naturally occurring microscopic organisms that are completely harmless to non-target species.

Packages of nematodes usually contain around 5 million of these tiny killers that are non-toxic to humans, pets, and birds.

They must be applied to wet soil and as they are extremely light sensitive must be kept out of direct sunlight. BeneďŹ cial nematodes are also effective against onion and radish maggots, wireworms, cutworms, and ea beetle larvae. Once applied to a lawn or garden they will continue to reproduce and be effective as long as they have prey.

One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK), a project of the Kootenay Library Federation, is a region-wide book club that celebrates the work of the talented writers living in the Kootenay Boundary. Two other great books, Tom Wayman’s collection of short stories Boundary Country, and Jennifer Craig’s Yes Sister, No Sister, round out the shortlist.

In addition to Moir’s reading, Wayman and Craig will appear virtually through two short ¿lms created for the Kootenay Library Federation by Kootenay ¿lmmaker Amy Bohigian.

GOLD CREEK RELOCATION AND MT. BAKER REBUILD PROJECT

SITE ACTIVITY COMMENCEMENT BC Hydro will be making system improvements and a power line relocation in the Gold Creek Road and Mt. Baker area, beginning in the middle of June 2012 with work expected to continue until November 2012. The project includes vegetation work, followed by construction activities involving the use of heavy equipment, resulting in higher than normal traffic activity.

The line relocation and system upgrade will improve reliability and support telecommunication customers with equipment located on Mt. Baker.

BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience that the construction activity may cause, and will complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible.

RDEK approves funding for projects The Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors has approved funding for 138 projects around the region.

The funding comes from Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Initiatives and Affected

Areas Programs, which are administered by the RDEK. “We approved a total of $1,001,854 this year,� says RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay. ““From education and outreach projects to community hall reno-

vations, health and ¿tness initiatives, youth programs and community beauti¿cation, these funds will bene¿t so many different and worthwhile projects in our region.�

The Board approved the funding at its June Board Meeting.

SIVOROT, Gladys Marion (nee Franson) April 9, 1933 - June 8, 2012 Former Kimberley resident, Gladys Sivorot, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 8:50 pm at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family and friends.

At her request, no funeral service will be held. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Gladys Sivorot was born on April 9, 1933 in Invermere and raised in Wilmer, BC. Gladys's parents were Charles and Evelyn Franson and she had five siblings, Hilda, Norman, Shirley, Albert and Ronnie.

After moving to Kimberley, Gladys met Clair John Sivorot.

They were married in Kimberley at the United Church in December 1957. Together they raised three children, Colleen, Danny and Michael.

Gladys was very artistic, crafty and inventive. Her determined nature kept her active and busy. Her interests in life included watercolour paintings, gardening, sewing, crocheting and baking. She had a passion for a thrift store find, garage sales and antiques. She enjoyed and looked forward to visits from her family and friends. In 2007, Gladys sold the family homestead in Kimberley and moved to Cranbrook to be closer to her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Clair on September 29, 1987 (52) and her dear grandson, David Michael Sivorot on March 21, 1989 (6).

Gladys is survived by her first-born daughter Colleen Reif (nee Sivorot) of Cranbrook, her eldest son Danny Sivorot (wife Linda) of Cranbrook and her youngest son Michael Sivorot (wife Emily) of Malott, Washington, USA. Her grandchildren, Christie (Evan) of Wainwright, Alberta, Sara of Cranbrook, Tyson of Calgary, Alberta, Nicholas, Sarina, Antoniette and Jenelle - all of Washington, USA and her many nieces and nephews.

Deep in our hearts your memory is kept to love, cherish and never forget. Until we meet again . . . .

The family would like to thank all the nurses in palliative care at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their kind help and support.
