Education is a thrill ride at Podium of Life Parents are constantly looking for the best education for their children. In an attempt to find the best solution, some people keep their kids at home and others choose to send their kids away to school.

opportunity is a program on a ski hill – Podium of Life school on Mount Washington. This unique educational opportunity combines school with skiing.

Podium of Life is dedicated to providing a program where focus on self-discipline and hard work pushes youth to reach a superior level in academics, athletics, and leadership.

“We expect our students to be successful in meeting the standards of our curriculum,” says Shane Harle teacher at the academy. “Superior behavior and work habits; academically, socially and athletically, will be taught and continually assessed. Our goal is to build extraordinary people and it is our commitment to each student in the school to hold them to this standard of excellence on a daily basis.”

Podium of Life runs through the winter, providing schooling and mountain sports for a small group of students. Students attend classes at the main lodge on Mount Washington in the morning and hit the slopes in the afternoon.

Last year a number of families took advantage of this unique opportunity to have their kids, from grade 4-12, go to school on a ski hill.

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com On Saturday June 2nd the Courtenay and District Fish and Game Association held their 20th Annual Outdoor Show at the clubhouse at Comox Lake. Kids had a chance to catch a fish at the fish Ralph Shaw tank, enjoy a hayride and take in all the displays. It was a delight to meet Ralph Shaw who was demonstrating fly tying in the clubhouse. Ralph started tying flies 72 years ago and donates many of his flies to charities today and he is a proud supporter of various fundraisers in the area.

I spoke with Doug Assu at Buttle Lake and the trout derby was a huge success with many prizes being won; this year they had 99 entries for the fun derby. A trout 2 pounds 10 ounces was the biggest caught.

At the moment salmon fishing has been hit and miss but a number of anglers have been fishing Bates Beach. Local guides are reporting some good catches of salmon around the 20 pound size, when the weather is favourable . If you can get to the bottom, some nice catches of Halibut have been caught at Browns Bay and Sayward.

Local lakes have been hot for trout fishing from shore using Power bait and worms where allowed and trolling Leos Wedding Bands or Wiggle Wood lures, both are made on Vancouver Island.

Salmon fishing at Nootka Sound has been steady with fish ranging from 16 to 24 pounds. Best results fishing this time of year are near the bottom in 85 to 115 feet of water.

Dent Island fishing derby is June 15th and 16th. For rules and registration contact Justin Farr at 250 203 2553.

Echo lake has been producing some nice 3 year old fish in the past week and a fish over 19 inches was hooked in the past week, heavy rains cut my trip short last Sunday. My fly of the week is a number 12 egg sucking leech, this fly caught some nice trout for August Brantvein from Campbell River.

The students gained valuable insight from a number of guest speaker including a: world champion rower, professional skier, military amputee, orthopaedic surgeon and world champion swimmer, ski judge, extreme snow boarder, pioneer of ice climbing, adventure video creator, and students from Zambia.

That’s what Camp Homewood is all about, re-introducing children to the environment right outside their front door; with horseback riding, archery, riflery, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, crafts and sailing. Homewood has been introducing kids to fabulous camping experiences since 1944.

Camp Homewood is a Christian camp on Quadra Island, which offers many different

camping experiences.

Most people who grew up in Campbell River will be able to tell you about their fantastic memories of summers spent at Homewood.

Starting with the classic harbour camp, young and old can try their hand at all the activities, enjoy fireside singing and stories, and truly explore some of the local outdoor treasures – and if the weather co-operates maybe even experience sleeping under the stars. For many it’s their first, and perhaps only, chance to try water skiing and other harbour style sports.

It’s every kid’s dream to run around thinking they are truly surviving in the wilderness – without worrying about food or shelter. This is a place where campers feel transported out of the modern world and straight into the wild.

All camps are equipped with a chef, lifeguards, first aid attendants and fully trained staff for full supervision.
