COTTON The Choice of the Old World and ofToday Cotton – thin, gauzy and cool in the sun or thick, warm and cozy in a breeze – few fabrics are as versatile. Socks, t-shirts, crochet fabric, fishing nets and coffee filters are often all made of cotton. This product with a 7000 year history has an impressive array of credits and is the best-selling fibre in North America. However, not all cotton is created equal. Cotton is grown worldwide but its characteristics vary by region. Cotton grown in North America is called upland cotton and tends to be heavier and found in thicker garments whereas cotton native to India and Pakistan is known as tree cotton and tends to be much lighter. Extra-long staple cotton, often marketed as Pima cotton, is considered to be of the finest quality and is native to tropical South America.

What You Might Not Know About Cotton · World production of cotton is estimated at 25 million tonnes annually; this accounts for 2.5% of the world’s arable land. · The United States has been the largest exported of cotton for many years. · China is the largest producer of cotton. · Cotton gin is not a beverage – it is a machine that separates cotton fibres from their seeds. The mechanical cotton gin was invented in 1793 and is largely responsible for the fibre’s popularity. · The United Nations General Assembly declared 2009 the International Year of Natural Fibres.

Cotton Clothing Cotton has been a choice fibre for clothing for thousands of years due to its versatility. Cotton can be woven into a standard fabric without stretch or knit into a cotton jersey that stretches. Cotton also combines well with other fibres for various fashion and practical applications. The cotton shirt, dress or nightgown often evokes memories of Victorian England. This romantic feeling around cotton makes it popular for sleepwear and among brides.

THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR FASHION No matter the price or color of the lenses, make sure you buy sunglasses that claim to block at least 99 percent of UV rays.

SHOPPING FOR SUNGLASSES? The first dilemma is whether to invest in an expensive pair or go for the cheapies on the spinning rack at the department store. The answer depends entirely on your lifestyle. If you go through more than one pair a season, then you won’t want to risk leaving behind your investment at the beach or in your friend’s car. As long as you buy ones with adequate UV protection, it doesn’t matter if they cost $100 or $15. Just make sure you have a hard-sided carrying case for them so they won’t get scratched. The American Academy of Ophthalmology, sponsor of UV Safety Month, says that any pair of sunglasses you buy should be labeled as blocking at least 99 percent of ultraviolet rays. If the tag reads, “UV absorption of up to 400

nm”, that means the glasses will absorb 100 percent of UV rays. The color and darkness of a lens do not indicate their ability to block UV rays. Polarized lenses and mirrored lenses cut down on glare from shiny objects, such as cars, windows, and the surface of the water, but they may not block harmful UV rays unless they are labeled as doing so. Blue-blocking sunglasses, usually ambercolored, are preferred by pilots and winter sports enthusiasts because of their reported ability to make distant objects sharper in hazy or white conditions. Wraparound sunglasses are also the choice of people spending a lot of time outdoors because of their extended coverage, which blocks UV rays from entering around the sides of the eyes.

How and why you should

EXFOLIATE Exfoliating is important for a few reasons but the most valuable is to cultivate younger, healthier skin. Your body produces new skin cells nonstop around the clock. An average adult can shed up to 50,000 dead skin cells every minute. Our skin is constantly generating new cells at the dermis layer and sending them to the epidermis. As the cells rise to the surface they gradually die and become filled with keratin. These keratinized skin cells are essential as they give our skin its protective quality. They need to be exfoliated to make way for younger cells. As we age the natural process of cell turnover slows down. Cells start to pile up unevenly on the skin's surface, giving it a dry, rough, dull appearance and they can clog the pores leading to bumps, superficial spots, blackheads and breakouts. Exfoliation removes those cells that are clinging on, stimulates cell renewal and reveals the fresher, younger, refined skin below. These new skin cells accept the application of your skincare products whereas the keratinized ‘old’ cells block penetration.

HOW TO EXFOLIATE FACIAL SKIN: Facial skin is very delicate and requires a gentler abrasion than other parts of the body. Choose a product containing finely ‘milled’ ingredients. Stay away from anything ‘crushed’ such as nuts because the jagged edges can cause micro cuts on the skin’s surface. Ask your aesthetician about Enzymatic and Glycolic exfoliants for sensitive and/or mature skin. The first step is to wash the face with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Water that is too cold will not open pores and water that is too hot can damage the skin. Apply the exfoliator, avoiding the eye area, and massage using small circular motions, but be

sure to press lightly. Over-exfoliating by scrubbing too firmly or too frequently can cause damage to the skin along with stinging, redness and irritation. Freshly exfoliated skin will be sensitive to sunlight so it is a must to wear sunscreen. Check with your aesthetician as to how often your skin needs to be exfoliated - most skin types will benefit with 1-3 times per week.

AS FOR THE REST OF OUR BODY, the feet, knees and elbows require the most exfoliating work. These areas tend to get flakey and rough so exfoliating, again in circular motions; with a body exfoliant keeps the skin soft and smooth. Exfoliating body and facial skin will leave your entire body feeling clean, fresh and healthy.

A RENEWED PASSION FOR

WINDOW FASHIONS If you are of the baby boomer ilk, chances are you grew up with draperies in your parents home. With the echo of " close the drapes" coming from your mother in the other room. Probably a tweedy looking fabric, perhaps a white sheer underneath. All hung on a track that ran wall to wall under a built in valance box. If you where lucky you had a track with a cord in it to ease the opening and closing. These drapes were just, there, forever it

seemed. Never wondering where they came from or who made them? Just a feeling of comfort and coziness when they where closed, and a sign to get your day going when opened. Then something happened. Draperies seemed to disappear. Replaced by a new wave of window coverings. Blinds. While blinds have their place and they are functional, warm and cozy, not exactly. Flip through the home decorating magazines today, and what you will see in

the background of almost every room, is draperies. Beautiful draperies. Some with bold patterns, some subtle, soaring up to the ceiling, all on gorgeous hardware. They seem to tie the rooms together, uniting sofa's, side chairs carpets and area rugs. A must have for room decor, the final piece of the puzzle. A visit to a custom drapery showroom need not be intimidating. Look for a showroom with several lines of fabric and hardware from wood to metal to motorized, to suit any budget, they should have displays to see the quality workmanship, designers with several years experience, most should be able to give a rough quote on the spot. They should loan samples, offer to measure for free, make it easy and fun. It's nice to see comfort coming back, but rest assured, "these are not your Mothers Draperies”. PLANNING AN

Outdoor Get-together WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY? There's just something about warm weather that makes you want to dust off the patio furniture, break out the colorful table linens, and host an outdoor gathering, even if you’re not a frequent entertainer. Whether a fancy garden party or a casual barbecue, summer entertaining is as easy and breezy as a sunny day: no vacuuming or straightening up, no polishing silver, no need to decorate beyond perhaps a simple lantern hung from a tree. But that doesn't mean entertaining without style. When we surveyed the offerings available in Downtown Courtenay this season, we found a lot of variety. From metal lanterns to retro floral plates, to understated flatware made from sustainable bamboo, whatever your taste, there's something for you. When setting your table for an outdoor party, combine sophistication and creativity. Our place setting ideas add natural elements and mix

different colors to create a fresh look for your patio table. Your table should be full of sunshine, just like summer is. Mix different shades of yellow, such as pale, butter-tinted napkins and glowing gold flowers, to have a table setting bursting with brightness. If you can't get to the beach, bring the beach to you. You can feel like you’re on a vacation in your own backyard by adorning your table with island accents, such as agave plants and palm tree dishware. y Take a night off and enjoy dinner outside with your sweetheart and a warm summer breeze. A minimall place setting only needs a few special features, like a vase of flowers and a delicious meal, to be romantic. Unwind with friends after a long summer day th a of lounging by the pool with

ta ural col colors and table able display of subdued natural si simple place settings. Add candles for an in intimate atmosphere and wooden-handled si silverware as you dine al fresco. Take advantage of what summertime brings

and incorpo orate nature na into your outdoor incorporate meal. Combine natural shades of green, white and brown with a bright color, such as blue, to make your place settings pop. Add oversized flowers and vines to the table.

This is the least expensive way to go. For the most part these products are durable, long lasting and quite attractive. My favourites are generally the Granite or Stone "look-alikes". Laminates are $100 - $125 a running foot.

Most hot tubs users soak their bodies for a variety of health reasons: to soothe sore muscles, reduce stress and ease aching bones. But what many don’t realize is that if the tubs aren`t properly maintained, users often get rashes, itchy skin and coughs. “Many people don`t understand why they are getting negative health reactions from being in their hot tubs,” says Barry Back of Barry Back Service Ltd. in the Comox Valley. “Ensuring that the water is properly balanced with chemicals is important, but bad water quality is not always the culprit.” Back should know. He has serviced thousands of customers during his 30 years in the hot tub and pool servicing industry. People often assume that itchy skin is the result of the water and chemicals being out of balance. But it`s not that simple, says Back. Sometimes the jet action in the hot tub literally pushes the blood away from the skin`s surface, he says, adding that if

the jets have too much pressure blood cannot readily flow back into that area. This, he says, can prompt itchy, irritated skin. As for coughing, it is usually caused by low Ph and low alkalinity in the water (in other words, acidic conditions). And when hot tub users breathes acidic water vapours, it tickles their throats, causing them to repeatedly cough. The most simple solution, says Back, is to add alkalinity increaser (a common hot tub chemical) to the water. As for rashes from soaking in hot tubs, this is often caused by poorly sanitized water or improper Ph levels within the water. If the hot tub is not correctly maintained, a bacterium called pseudomonas aeriginosa can infect hair follicle and cause skin rashes and irritation. “This is why it is extremely important to ensure that hot tub water is well balanced,” says Back. “And this can be easily achieved by knowing how to regularly test your water at home.”

HOWTO

COMPOST WEEDS Yikes, the weeds are getting out of hand! And what lush growth! I would love to have that rocket fuel in my compost but I don’t want to spread the seeds for extra years of weeding. What to do? Well, there are various ways to compost weeds (listed below) without creating a future calamity.

Manure and hay are wonderful compost additives but often bring a curious assortment of weed seeds. But don’t give up on these precious resources. There are various ways to conquer the incoming weeds. You could start one compost heap or bin for all the weedy, seedy waste. Keep another pile or bin strictly for the more weed free material such as leaves, sawdust, grass clippings, coffee grounds, etc. In your weedy bin, as decomposition progresses, turning the pile will mash weed sprouts. If you can attain temperatures of 55 C (130 F) for three days, most seeds will be destroyed without losing the beneficial microbes. To be sure there are no seeds remaining, you can solarize the compost. But don’t get over 70 C (160 F) as that will harm the good soil life.

VARIOUS WAYS TO COMPOST WEEDS without creating a future calamity. Rule 1: Compost weeds before they go to seed. Rule 2: If weeds have already gone to seed, compost them in a hot compost pile. Temperatures of 55 to 60 C (130 to 140 F) will kill most weed seeds. Rule 3: If you are not hot composting, kill the weeds before going to the bin by drying them in the sun. Put them on a piece of cardboard or newspaper so they do not spring back to life. A few days of dry sun and the weeds are toast. The cardboard or newspaper will start decomposing and you can toss that in the pile too. Rule 4: Quarantine diseased plants in their own compost pile. The bacteria or fungi that cause the disease are starved, poisoned or consumed by the enthusiastic compost micro-organisms. And the thermophiles, high temperature microbes, are the most lethal. Rule 5: Noxious weeds (buttercup anyone?) can be solarized. Stuff them in a plastic bag with a little water in the sun until they turn into slime.

Or you can put the near finished moist compost in a bucket or bag, let the seeds sprout, and then toss them around to mangle the sprouts. Soil life is happy, seed spouts are crushed. Another option is to put the dangerous seedy, weedy compostables into a pit or trench. Seeds won’t sprout a foot or so underground. Just beware if you till up the pit later. You can test your compost for weediness by taking a handful, putting it in a bag moistened with water in a warm place and see what springs to life. So go ahead and compost those luscious weeds. They are pulling rich nutrients from the deep. When composted, your garden will love the smorgasbord.

Just a pinch (or three) lends rich color and a delicate complexity to a wide range of dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Everything from deviled eggs, quiches and frittatas to spice rubs, tomato sauces, soups and salsas are improved by smoked paprika. The Capsicum peppers that make paprika are rich in vitamin C. Paprika contains more vitamin C by weight than lemon juice and it’s also high in antioxidants. The Spanish smoked paprika comes in sweet smoked and hot smoked varieties.
