A ‘resplendent facility’

The Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre had both its official and public openings last week.

A select group of Revelstokians got the first look at the new performing arts centre at the facility’s official opening last Wednesday evening. That was followed by a public open house on Thursday.

The 100-plus guests at the official opening included city councillors, school district staff, school board trustees, teachers, principals, parents and more. They were joined by many other performers.

The guest of honour was George Abbott, the B.C. Minister of Education, who travelled to Revelstoke for the opening.

They were treated to a series of speeches, followed by performances by students and community members.

“The theatre, as part of the Neighbourhood Learning Centre, is an example of what we always strive to do in the education system but don’t always achieve,” said Abbott.

“That is to see an organic partnership between the community, parents, students and the school.”

and Adrien Maitre, and superintendent Anne Cooper.

Chell called the performing arts centre “a tremendous addition to the community,” where Revelstoke’s arts community will be able to showcase itself.

“This theatre will allow these talents to be showcased to an even greater degree,” he said.

Mayor Raven said the theatre

was an example of co-operation and drive in the community.

“And to you, the torch is yours now,” he said to the students in attendance. “We’ve done this for you, we’ve provided this facility.

To all the other students that follow you I look forward to where you go with this in the future.”

Palladino said the arts council was pleased to be working on the

management plan for the centre and that she hoped it becomes a community cultural space.

“I think its really important to understand that as beautiful as this building is, it’s what happens in here that really matters,” she said.

“My hope for the future is that its well used. It belongs to the whole community.”

Brackenbury and Maitre echoed

the sentiment that the theatre will finally provide students and the community with a proper venue.

“With our improved seating options attending a production will provide a more enjoyable experience and surely attract a broader audience,” said Brackenbury.

Added Maitre: “The quality of our theatre will now complement the hard work our music, choir and drama students have put in over the past years and years to come.”

Cooper thanked everyone involved in the project for their efforts. She called the theatre “breathtaking.”

“This resplendent facility anticipates untold opportunities to showcase talent in Revelstoke and maybe one day even my own talents in retirement – singing,” she said.

When the speeches finished, local talent got their first chance to use the theatre to showcase what Revelstoke has to offer. Attendees were treated to a series of performances by the Revelstoke Secondary School Senior Band, the Revelstoke Theatre Company, drama students and dancers. Abbott and Cooper joined the choir on stage for a singing of Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah.

It was a showcase of some of the talent at the school and in the community; as well as the features of the new facility.

Education minister talks shop at business breakfast City hall recommends rubber roof option for Revelstoke Courthouse again ALEX COOPER

B.C Education Minister took time during his visit to Revelstoke last week to have breakfast and talk education and election with some Revelstoke businesspeople.

About 40 people were in attendance to hear the Shuswap MLA, who is from Sicamous and calls Revelstoke a second home.

Abbott heaped praise on the Revelstoke School District, superintendent Anne Cooper, school board chair Alan Chell and the early learning partners.

He talked about the governments BC education plan and also took some shots at the leadership of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation.

Lastly, he brought up next year’s election. While he said he still hadn’t decided if he would run again he did say he expects the Liberal Party to turn its fortunes around. Doug Clovechok, who is expected to be the Liberal candidate in the Columbia River – Revelstoke riding was in attendance.

“We have a long period now between today and mid-May. I’m confident we’re going to see a turn-around in the polls in the weeks and month ahead.”

Most of the 45 minutes he spent talking and answering questions was focused

on education, for which he held up Revelstoke as a shining light in the province, with its top graduation rates, strong results in the Foundational Skills Assessment and successes in early learning, “Revelstoke is second to none in the province in terms of the results that are being achieved,” he said. “I think the educational team in Revelstoke is not one that we need to direct. We actually learn from the educational team here.”

Abbott wasn’t just speaking to his audience, as he has praised Revelstoke in the legislature as well. He said he often held up Revelstoke as an example to other school districts in the province, “actually coming close to literally pissing them off.”

“It exemplifies what we talk about but don’t see that often,” he said. “What we talk about is the ideal situation where the partnership in education is between parents, the school and the broader community. You have that here.”

Abbott also took time to promote the B.C. Education Plan, which aims to provide a more flexible and personalized approach to teaching students. He said the plan’s goal was to give students more opportunities to focus on what they want to do in life by allowing them more time to apprentice as a student.

“Let’s expand the educational experience so students can get out into the community and explore what they think might

be the passion for the balance of their lives,” he said. “A career that will genuinely be a career, it won’t be work.”

At the same time, he took shots at the leadership of the BCTF, saying they weren’t progressive in terms of educational reform. “The only reform they will contemplate is us turning over the system to them to manage it and that’s not going to happen.”

Abbott’s turn as Minister of Education has been highlighted for the stalled negotiations between the teachers and the province that climaxed with a teachers’ strike in March, which ended with back-to-work legislation and government imposed mediation.

After talking he took questions on a variety of subjects – what to do with empty schools (“If there’s a property in Revelstoke that you know is not going to be utilized for another 50 years at least, if not ever, we want to be reasonable with the district.”); co-operating with the business community (“We want to get high school students interested in a career; get them away from the school environment and into the community environment.”) and the educational experience (“One of the things that’s an important element in the educational plan is moving away from what to often is a gathering of facts versus learning to learn through project based learning.”)

The city’s planning department is recommending shortterm rubber roof repair for the Revelstoke Courthouse, saying replacing the copper dome roof would be too expensive.

Last summer city staff proposed the idea, but reaction from the community at large and the heritage community paused the plans in favour of further review. Specifically, many urged doing the job right once instead of just deferring the issue for another few decades.

The roof replacement was sent out for estimates. Contractors said putting the rubber-like membrane on the building would be much cheaper – in the $125,000 to $150,000 range.

A planning department report said the estimated cost of replacing the copper roof was not consistent, ranging from $313,000 to $650,000.

City staff are once again recommending the rubber option to council.

The Revelstoke Heritage Commission last year called for exploration of outside grant funding for the copper option. To date the Columbia Basin Trust has agreed to grant $50,000 for the project – but that amount looks like it will be applied to the rubber roof repair instead.

At a May meeting, the Heritage Commission begrudgingly accepted the rubber option, but insisted they be consulted on the colour.

Council was scheduled to weigh in on the issue at its June 12 meeting.

BC Ambulance Service ‘Autolaunch’ system comes to Revelstoke New helicopter service expected to shave hours off certain serious trauma incident responses AARON ORLANDO editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

The BC Ambulance Service on June 8 started its new ‘Autolaunch’ service, which simultaneously dispatches helicopter and ground paramedic crews to serious incidents.

The BCAS says the new system will shorten the time it takes to treat and transport patients to trauma centres, sometimes by several hours.

Here’s how it works: Based on information provided by 9-1-1 callers, dispatchers identify instances when an Autolaunch would likely be beneficial. A heli-

copter-based critical care team and a local ground ambulance are both dispatched. If the ground ambulance arrives first and feels the helicopter team is not needed, they can cancel the incoming helicopter and handle treatment and transport by road. If the helicopter is needed, the helicopter-based crew can treat and then transport the patient directly to a regional trauma centre hospital.

“Getting the right patients to the trauma centre that can best provide care for their injuries as quickly as possible is critical for those patients with major injuries,” said Dr. Stephen Wheeler, the medical director with the

Emergency and Health Services Commission Critical Care Transport Program. “Reduced transport times to trauma centres results in better patient outcomes and reduced hospital stays and health care system costs.”

As of June 8, the Kamloopsbased helicopter will cover an area including Revelstoke. That coverage also includes Williams Lake to the north, the U.S. border to the south and Nakusp to the east.

Prior to June 8, trauma patients in the Revelstoke area were treated and transported by ground ambulance to the nearest local hospital where a physician would then request an ambulance transfer to a regional trauma centre if needed.

The Autolaunch program is already in place in several areas of B.C., including Vancouver Island, Vancou-

ver Coastal, Fraser Health, the East Kootenay and in the western portion of Northern B.C.

Using our table-sized iPadlike device that’s pre-loaded with Google Maps and digital renderings of buildings, we bulldozed Southside Market and Mt. Begbie Elementary School and replaced the surrounding Fourth Street strip with dense apartments and townhouses featuring retail on the ground floor.

The more we shoehorned residents in, the more a built-in transportation and greenhouse gas emission calculator approvingly dials down.

And when we were done, we threw in a park for good measure.

That was the outcome of my team’s morning session with researchers from the University of British Columbia, here conducting research as part of the My Revelstoke 2030 project. My teammates were mayor David Raven and Jill Zacharias. We were specifically tasked with designing and envisioning the Southside core as it might be 20 years from now, while about 50 participants on other teams focused

on other areas of town during three days of sessions. While we worked, about six researchers videotaped and recorded our every move with a battery of recording devices.

So, is Southside slated for gentrification in the coming years? Not really, explained Ronald Kellett, professor of Landscape Architecture with UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The ongoing ‘My Revelstoke 2030’ partnership between the City of Revelstoke and UBC is primarily an exercise in researching (and improving) how communities engage and visualize planning and change. Specifically, the research team is being partially funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS). That University of Victoria-based institute seeks to partner with government, academia and the private sector in order to study climate change and develop solutions to mitigate and adapt to the change.

“This funding is trying to understand how people engage with issues of climate change in their lives,” Kellett explained. “The integration between energy and emissions and the way communities are planned – that’s our expertise. What PICS wants to know is are there better ways to engage communities in conversations about that relationship.”

Through the series of exercises, we explored paper planning and

the new large, multi-touch screen device that assisted us with visualizing the changes we proposed. The plan form was shown on the digital table, while the overhead projector showed a 3-D overhead view.

So, if this is just an academic study, are we more than just Guinea pigs? What’s in it for Revelstoke?

Maged Senbel, an Assistant Professor with the University Of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning, said the research is intertwined with ongoing planning efforts in the city.

The city’s Official Community Plan (OCP) has recently been revised and the new Unified Development Bylaw is hot off the press.

These documents enable “a range of options for neighbourhoods and neighbourhood centres. And people don’t necessarily have a deep sense of what that entails, what are the different options that are possible within those new arrangements,” Senbel said. “So this is an opportunity to have people experience some of the choices within that new policy and to visualize these choices in a three-dimensional way that enables them to actually imaging the neighbourhood.”

He hopes the research study this week and a follow-up session in September will facilitate a deeper understanding of planning in Revelstoke.

Jury trial requested for death of Frankie Brunetti case ALEX COOPER reporter@revelstoketimesreview.com

A preliminary hearing has been set for the trial of the man charged in connection with the death of Olindo “Frankie” Brunetti.

Caleb Wade Anderson made his first appearance in Revelstoke court last Wednesday. He is charged with impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death and criminal negligence causing death.

“It is our intention to elect trial by Supreme Court judge and with a jury,” said his lawyer.

Anderson appeared in court wearing a white dress shirt and jeans. He had a patch over his right eye.

The case was sent to the judicial case manager who will schedule the preliminary hearing. A preliminary hearing is held to determine if there is enough evidence to require a trial.

Four civilian witnesses and six police witnesses, including an accident reconstruction expert, are expected to testify at the preliminary hearing, Brunetti was killed in a crash south of Revelstoke on Sept. 29, 2011. He was 22-years-old. Anderson was a pall bearer at his funeral. *** A man arrested in connection with a violent assault last April made his first appearance in Revelstoke court last week.

The two incidents are not related. *** A man charged with five counts of sexual assault of a minor has pleaded not guilty and elected trial by supreme court judge.

Michael Kenneth Wagner is facing five charges relating to sexual assault of a minor.

Michael Darrell Robinson was scheduled to stand trial on July 5, however Judge McKimm postponed the trial because there were already two other trials set for that date that were expected to take up the full day.

The other trials are a youth matter and a small claims trial that has been on the court docket for more than two years.

McKimm said both matters should take priority.

“In my view any delay on that is due to the lack of institutional resources and institutional delay,” he told the court.

He said the Robinson trial must be set for the next available date, no matter what. *** A Revelstoke man caught in the act of stealing a pair of skis pleaded guilty in court today.

Dylan Schnur was photographed stealing a pair of skis from someone’s backyard on Jan. 7 at around 3 a.m.

The photo was posted online and Schnurr, upon seeing it, turned himself into police.

Judge Mayland McKimm reprimanded Schnurr for not understanding the value of property and acting “wildly irresponsible.”

He gave Schnur the option of either community service or a $250 fine.

Schnurr opted for the fine.

“It will work out to three-quarters of a week you’re lifting rock and laying grout for being an idiot,” McKimm told Schnurr, who said he is apprenticing as a mason in Surrey.

City mulls greenhouse gas reporting methods AARON ORLANDO editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

City hall is exploring options for officially reporting their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A report from City of Revelstoke environmental sustainability coordinator Penny Page-Brittin outlines options for council.

The municipality is a signatory to the Provincial Climate Action Charter and must now adopt some kind of system for quantifying and reporting its reductions.

There are a mix of several options. The city could purchase carbon offsets from a variety of organizations – such as the Pacific Carbon Trust or possibly the Carbon Neutral Kootenay project. Costs range from about $10/tonne and up. These options are not well-tested at this point as many municipalities in B.C. find themselves at the same decision point at Revelstoke and are choosing a variety of options.

A different strategy presented in Page-Brittin’s report is to sock the money into a special ‘making progress’ fund that would be earmarked for future local carbon offsetting projects.

The report, however, notes that these ‘future’ local projects can require tremendous effort and must endure rigorous verification processes before they can be certified.

The annual cost for purchasing greenhouse gas offsets is estimated to be about $21,500.

Page-Brittin’s report was set to go before council on June 12 and will then be referred to committees for comment.

In another greenhouse gas reduction initiative, the city will study three large municipal buildings – the arena, the public works building and the Greeley Creek water treatment plant in order to audit their energy use and find ways to reduce it.

Requests for qualifications will be submitted to three companies – Revelstoke-based Verda Tech Energy Management and Consulting is up against a company from Vancouver and another from Calgary.

Why does the East Gate Landslide keep blocking the Trans-Canada?

When the East Gate Landslide came down onto the Trans-Canada Highway last week, blocking the road for more than a day, it marked the second year in a row a slide there blocked the highway, and the third time since 2007.

So what is happening with the East Gate Landslide path on Heather Mountain that is causing it to deposit so much mud and debris on the highway?

The East Gate Landslide is a pre-historic landslide that was re-activated in 1997 along prehistoric fault lines, according to a 2006 geolical survey by Marc-Andre Brideau and Doug Stead of Simon Fraser University, and Rejean Couture of the Geological Survey of Canada.

“Most of the slope on that side of that valley is affected by ancient slope deformations,” said Couture in an interview.

“What happened is a big failure inside the rock mass that was hanging there above the slope.”

The slide that was triggered stopped on a bench high up on Heather Mountain, however in the spring of 1999 enough debris built up to send the path further down the mountain.

“A huge volume of mass, a mix of soil, trees, boulder, blocks and water as well went down the slope and bull-dozed everything in its passage,” he said.

lower bench, but when there is enough snow melt and heavy rain, it sends debris down wellformed channels to the TransCanada Highway.

Normally only mud flows down to the highway but when the build-up is strong enough, it can bring rocks and trees with it. The debris flow can travel up to several metres per second, said Couture.

“If you look at the air photos, you have an elongated mass of debris that occupies about onethird of the entire slope,” said Couture. “This area is full of matter and debris - a mix of sand, boulders and trees. It’s standing there waiting to see rainfall events, snow melt, an increase of water to trigger debris flows” To manage the landslide, Parks Canada built catchment basins at the base of two mud flow channels leading from the slide to the valley below.

They also have built culverts and installed weather stations that monitor snowpack and precipitation, said Parks Canada spokesperson Jacolyn Daniluck in an e-mail.

This year, Parks Canada noticed the landslide becoming active in May and mud flow was observed in the channels leading to the highway. The heavy rain last week caused the flow to increase and by the morning of June 6, the catchment basins overflowed and the mud and debris covered 400 metres of highway about 3 metres deep.

“Parks Canada was aware that heavy rains were forecast and was ready with the necessary heavy equipment and staff to manage any possible highway closures and clean-up,” said Daniluck.

Couture said the key to preventing overflow is to make sure the catchment basins are managed and emptied in the fall

or early-spring so that when the flows do start, there is enough room to capture all the trees and boulders that come down.

What is the potential of the East Gate Landslide? Can it result in a massive, catastrophic failure like the Frank Slide that buried a small mining town in the Alberta Rockies under 82 million tonnes of rock in 1903, killing more than 70 people?

Couture doesn’t think so.

He said that slide was a sudden collapse of brittle rock with huge energy. The East Gate Landslide he described as more of a “big bulldozer that is moving slowly.”

As it stands, Parks Canada has no plans to expand the catchment basin, said Daniluck.

“As always and in all seasons our focus is on motorist and worker safety so we close the highway when it is affected by slide activity or other extreme weather events.”

Women alleges assault by Revelstoke police chief ALEX COOPER reporter@revelstoketimesreview.com

A women is claiming to have been assaulted by the chief of police in Revelstoke, however only after she repeatedly failed to stop when ordered to for not wearing a bicycle helmet.

Julie Gamache says she was nearly twice run-over and later tackled and choked by RCMP Staff-Sgt. Jacquie Olsen in an incident last Thursday.

However, the altercation took place after Gamache ignored repeated orders to stop for not wearing a bicycle helmet and also gave Olsen the finger, according to one witness.

Gamache said she was on her way downtown when she was asked to stop. When she didn’t,

Olsen yelled at her again, this time cursing. Gamache said she didn’t like the way she was asked to stop, so she kept going downtown, along Mackenzie Avenue, west of First Street, and then towards the RCMP detachment.

She said Olsen twice tried to ram her with her vehicle. When she finally did stop at Campbell Avenue and Second Street, she was tackled, thrown against the police cruiser, handcuffed and alleges she was choked.

“I was really surprised and confused the police officer was arresting me like that,” said Gamache.

The incident attracted a crowd of people, including Mel Martens, who saw part of the chase and saw Olsen put Gamache in

a chokehold.

Kristine Howe witnessed Olsen trying to knock Gamache off her bike. She said Gamache was “being an idiot but so was our sergeant.”

She said the cyclist turned through the crosswalks at First Street and Connaught Avenue, when Olsen ran at her in her SUV and tried to force her out of the crosswalk.

Howe said Gamache was calm and smiling while Olsen was yelling at her. Gamache continued south along Connaught and Olsen ran at her again near the alley behind Frisby Ridge.

“She was driving wrecklessly and doing stupid tactical meanouvers at a cyclist,” said Howe. “My issue is the cop ended up endangering us and

endangering the women without a helmet.”

Sgt. Kim Hall of the Revelstoke RCMP said on Friday that no complaint of an assault had been received at the office.

“Staff-Sgt. Olsen was dealing with a bicyclist who was riding on the sidewalk, no bike helmet and the failed to signal,” said Sgt. Hall. “She was directed to stop by Staff Sgt. Olsen and refused to do so and was taken into custody.”

Gamache said she received a $29 ticket for not wearing a helmet and that she planned on making a formal complaint with the Commission for the Complaints Against the RCMP, an independent government agency that deals with complaints of misconduct by RCMP officers.

Can’t we all just get along?

T

What’s a little baffling is a growing trend in Revelstoke of cyclists who can’t seem to follow basic rules designed for their own and others’ safety.

Don’t ride on the sidewalk because you might seriously injure a child, an elderly person or someone who is frail.

Stop at stops signs and red lights. Signal if you’re turning. Stay to the right of the road, a safe distance from parked cars.

And just be cool in general. It’s really simple stuff.

Likewise, motorists need to heed similar rules.

What’s golden is the spirit of getting along and making sure safety for all is the priority. You, your family and all your friends arrive at their destination safely every time – that’s the goal.

Besides, it’s an average 10-minute or less commute for the majority of us. No need to blow a gasket.

And, if you’re a pro-cycling activist who’s dreaming of a future where bikes rule the road, there are several local, active cycling advocacy initiatives on the go.

Hook up with those people and get involved with building capacity and making positive change. Self-declared anarchy might be cool posturing, but it’s just not a productive, adult solution.

The City’s economic development department is requesting $100,000 from the ColumbiaShuswap Regional District Economic Opportunity Fund to help build a new visitor information centre in Revelstoke.

The request comes in a staff report to be considered at city council’s June 12 meeting.

The report from economic development director Alan Mason says the funding will allow the three partners involved in the project – the City of Revelstoke, the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures Revelstoke – to proceed with the new building.

The vision is to house all these organizations and the tourism centre in a new building. However, the location of the centre is a multi-faceted controversy.

In mid-2011, one of the two parking lots adjacent to Grizzly Plaza was shaping up to be the final location for the centre, including a series of drawings produced as part of community consultations. The construction contract would have been tendered out by the city. However, the owners of the empty lot adjacent to the BC Liquor Store on the corner of Victoria Road and Campbell Avenue emerged with an alternate plan to build the new centre there.

Mason told the Times Review that the city has now opted for the lot next to the BC Liquor Store.

City council has relegated almost all discussion of the ongoing visitor centre controversy to closed meetings – including the decision to locate the centre on Campbell Avenue.

Although the Economic Opportunity Fund is administered by the CSRD, Revelstoke city council has the de facto say over where it is spent.

here’s a new owner and a new brand for our Grizzly Plaza-based jewellery store. Arleigh Garratt has reopened and rebranded the former Spisani Designs as Garnish. The shop will still feature many of the same emerging Canadian designers and is taking on board two local jewellery artists – Kat Cadegan and Julie Jones – who will be renting benches at the shop. Suzanne Spisani’s work will continue to be featured at the store while she studies in Ottawa, as will the other dozen regional artists patrons of the store have become used to. The schedule for the summer music series in Grizzly Plaza is almost set, with only two dates left to be confirmed.

49 different musical acts are scheduled to play over the course of 67 nights throughout the summer.

Revelstoke will be represented by three teams at the Big Bear soccer tournament this weekend.

Revelstoke FC men’s league team, a second men’s team and the women’s team will all be competing for home town glory at the annual tournament, which takes place from Friday evening to Sunday.

This is Revelstoke FC’s first time entering the tournament in several years; normally they serve as organizers but this year they have enough players available to play as well.

This year will once again feature a beer garden at Queen Elizabeth Park, where the Revelstoke teams are expected to play their games. The schedule was not available as of press time. Spataro is hoping to get more locals out to take in the action. The beer gardens will be open Friday night, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Man arrested after knife incident in Southside Times Review staff

A man with a knife was arrested following a confrontation in Southside on Sunday.

RCMP were called to a report of a man wielding a hunting knife and yelling at a

group of people in the area of Victoria Road and 4th Street at around 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 3.

Police located the group involved but they were not forthcoming with information, the RCMP said.

RCMP patrolled the area

and eventually located the man. “The 25-year-old Revelstoke resident indicated that he had been confronted by a male with a club and was just defending himself,” said Staff-Sgt. Jacquie Olsen.

The successful candidate will have completed post-secondary, education courses related to Bylaw Enforcement and three (3) years relevant experience in investigation and/or law enforcement work, preferably in a unionized, local government environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A valid BC Driver’s License is a requirement of the job.

Based on operational needs, this position may work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and weekends. The normal work week (35 hours) will consist of 5 consecutive days, followed by 2 consecutive days off.

“Even though the rates of change are slow, if you look at Revelstoke over a couple of generations, it has changed quite a bit. And plans last easily that long,” Kellett said. “The clock might be ticking at a slower rate than Skytrain routes in Vancouver, but stuff is happening and the need to steer that in ways that create value for everyone in the community is just as huge in a slow-growing community as it is in a fast-growing community.”

Getting planning right now is also key for two other reasons, they said.

Firstly, Revelstoke won’t likely get a ‘do-over’ in the future. The change that comes as a result of resort development will be more or less permanent, Kellett noted. Secondly, the economic downturn can be viewed as fortuitous in the sense that it threw cold water on an overheated development scene that was happening on top of under-developed planning infrastructure.

pare: “This is the ideal time to do planning, when growth is slow, so that you can take the time to really weigh your options and have a measured vision to what you want to undertake – to how you want to imagine your future.”

Kellett said the planning is not just about growth and development, but steering change. “You could think of it as a remodel, not a growth strategy,” he said. He notes the walkable grid in the downtown core as an example; do we want to focus efforts on paving and servicing new subdivisions or repairing infrastructure already in use?

Even though the focus of the My Revelstoke 2030 exercise is academic, the case studies undertaken are based in reality. A series of recently-revised and new city planning documents envision several community hubs, including a revived Southside commercial district and new retail development in Arrow Heights.

The UBC team will be back in September to report, present their analysis and look at opportunities for emissions reduction through planning.

Mine rescue competition provides an intense display

HIGHLAND VALLEY COPPER, NYRSTAR - MYRA FALLS WIN MINE RESCUE COMPETITION Times Review staff

The provincial mine rescue competition will be returning to Revelstoke in 2013 after another successful competition in Revelstoke.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event saw the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s take part in a variety of challenges, ranging from rescuing a companion from a mine; getting someone out of a downed helicopter, putting out fires, assisting a non-English speaking accident victim and more.

The competition was divided into two parts, with the Highland Valley Copper team from Kamloops winning the surface mine competition and the Nyrstar - Myra Falls team, from near Campbell River, winning the underground mine rescue competition.

The weekend saw hundreds of competitors and their families travel to Revelstoke and represented a boon to the town. The Revelstoke Rotary Club reported record alcohol sales at the two gala dinners held over the weekend.
