Chemainus murals: Three new murals,

including a tribute to artist Emily Carr are scheduled to be started this year in Chemainus. Gaze at many largerthan-life murals by internationally known artists that tell the history of one of B.C.’s earliest logging towns. For mural news and events, go to muraltown.com

You’ll learn about steam-powered equipment used in early logging operations in the Cowichan Valley. Open from Easter to Labour Day, this internationally known facility boasts steam train rides, a trestle, na-

ture walks, picnic area, created logging camp and lots of equipment. Kinsol Trestle: Marvel at this magnificent railway trestle that was recently renovated to complete the Trans-Canada Trail link between Shawnigan Lake and Lake Cowichan. You can reach the trestle spanning the Koksilah River canyon via road and short trails from Shawnigan or Cowichan Station. Find out more at kinsoltrestle.ca.

Cowichan Bay village: Stroll along the Cowichan Bay waterfront and enjoy an eclectic mix of specialty stores, restaurants and marinas in this quaint seaside village. Watch sailboats beating through the wind in the annual regatta or tugboats bustling round the river estuary.

Totem tour: Take a free, guided tour through downtown Duncan to see our two dozen totem poles, including Cedarman, the widest totem in the world. Tours run daily Monday to Saturday, May to September.

Whippletree Junction: With many of its colourful buildings constructed from Duncan’s original Chinatown, this collection of buildings three miles south of Duncan is an eclectic mix of restaurants and antique, furniture, gift and collectible stores.

Providence Farm: The backdrop for several Valley galas, Providence is a working farm established when the Sisters of St. Ann built a convent on the site in the 19th century. Part of the original building has been re-created and includes a concert chapel.The farm provides innovative programs in horticultural therapy and vocational training. Open Mon. to Fri. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pick up a free map, enjoy a self guided tour of the farm, and stay for lunch.

Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre: Located in Hecate Park at Cowichan Bay, this brand-new interpretive centre houses an interactive computer display of the bay, a map of the estuary’s ecology, video clips from bay

Bamberton Museum: Step back in time to the early 1900s and relive life at Bamberton, one of the most important industrial sites in B.C.’s history. You can also experience Bamberton’s current history at this old cement factory site just south of Mill Bay on the Malahat Drive.

Crofton Museum: Visit the waterside museum in an old one-room school near the Salt Spring ferry in Crofton to learn about Henry Croft’s copper smelter and the little town that grew around it. Fairbridge Farm: Originally a

Prince of Wales school for destitute children travelling from Britain in the ‘30s and ‘40s, many of its original buildings are home to residents in a delightful rural community between Duncan and Cowichan Station. The original chapel remains intact and is the scene of numerous spring and summer weddings.

Lavender farm: Ah, lavender.

Stroll the property, walk the labyrinth, enjoy natural products and culinary delights at Damali Lavender Farm on Telegraph Road, Cobble Hill. How to find the Valley The Cowichan Valley is located on southern Vancouver Island, about a half-hour by car north of British Columbia’s capital city of Victoria.

Its major centre is Duncan, with the smaller communities of Ladysmith and Chemainus to the north, Lake Cowichan to the west and Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill to the south.

Duncan is about 40 minutes south of the B.C. Ferry terminal in Nanaimo and about the same distance north of the Schwartz Bay ferry terminal outside Victoria and the Victoria International Airport.

Cowichan Arena: Home of the World’s Largest Hockey Stick and Puck recently included in the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame with an exhibit. It’s home to the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the B.C. Hockey League in the winter and lacrosse during the summer.

Cowichan Sportsplex: This is the hub of outdoor athletic activities in the valley located on Chesterfield Avenue in Duncan. There are softball diamonds, water-based field hockey pitch, soccer field, lacrosse box and more. The track is open any time for recreational walkers or runners. More at Cowichansportsplex.com.

Quadding: The Cowichan Valley ATV Club is an active group with regular outings in the region. To find out more, go to http://www. cvatv.ca/ Hunting: The Valley Fish and Game Club is an organization for hunters, anglers and recreational shooters in the region, with an eye toward the wise use of fish and wildlife resources. Mount Brenton Golf Course: The club was established in 1948 at Chemainus. It plays

slightly shorter than most 18-hole courses, but it’s a tricky layout of conveniently placed creeks and ponds, traps and majestic firs that challenge the golfer to stay on the fairway. More at mountbrentongolf.com/ Cowichan Golf and Country Club: The valley’s original course established in 1947 has undergone several expansions and facelifts over the years to maintain its status as one of the island’s major golf attractions. More at cowichangolfclub.ca/ Duncan Meadows Golf Course: The course is nestled in a unique spot near Duncan, with a links-style layout for part of it and a natural wooded setting for the rest. Many major Canadian championships have been held at the course over the years. Challenging, but a very rewarding golf experience. Scuba: Scuba diving off the waters of the valley is a popular activity. Whether you want

to go on your own or part of a group, there are many options available. The artificial reef now has six years of life under the Salish Sea and divers from all over the world have visited the site.
