Caped crusaders went online to nab suspected sex predators Three Fraser Valley men accused of child luring Black Press

Charges against three men accused of child luring via the Internet are the result of a police investigation into “super-hero” stings by Chilliwack caped crusaders last year.

But the outing of suspected sex predators, including one from Abbotsford, by civilian vigilantes – whether dressed as Batman or not – isn’t something the RCMP wants to encourage.

“It’s not something we condone,” Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said.

The previous week, a similar charge was stayed against a man the caped crusaders believed they had lured to Chilliwack with promises of sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Hollingsworth said she could not comment on that case, but a Crown prosecutor told Black Press that the charge was dropped because a conviction was unlikely based on the evidence.

Andrea Ormiston was unable to comment publicly on why the evidence was deemed insufficient, or if it had been tainted by anything done by the young crusaders.

The Chilliwack youths, one of them portraying a 15-year-old girl online, were setting up meetings for sex with adult men online and then, dressed as Batman or the Flash comic book characters, were confronting the men and posting the video-taped results on a YouTube site called To Troll A Predator.

“We understand that the males involved had good intentions, but it can be challenging even for trained police officers to properly gather evidence in such a way that suspects can be charged,” Hollingsworth said a Friday news release.

“And significantly,” she added, “the males put themselves and other members of the public at risk by engaging in this type of activity, and that is never a good thing.”

The three men charged are Andrew Karl Westerberg, 24, of Abbotsford; Todd Michael Paice, 48, of Chilliwack; and Kevin Robert Gill, 36, also of Chilliwack.

Paice was a public school teacher in Chilliwack until his February arrest and subsequent suspension by the school district. His next court appearance was scheduled yesterday in Chilliwack. Gill returns to court June 26 and Westerberg on July 16, both in Chilliwack.

Daronne Dobni “suffered a great deal” after being perceived in the community as a racist following his assault of an IndoCanadian man, his lawyer said Thursday during Dobni’s sentencing hearing in Abbotsford provincial court.

Lawyer Rob Dhanu said Dobni, a Christian man, has been burdened with the “hate crime label” since being charged in May 2011.

This upset him greatly because his stepfather is Indo-Canadian, as were the landlords of the basement suite he was living in at the time of the incident, said Dhanu, also of Southeast Asian descent.

In handing Dobni, 30, a conditional discharge and 18 months’ probation, Judge Ronald Caryer said there was no evidence to show that the attack had been racially motivated.

“I accept that Mr. Dobni is not a racist ... I don’t consider this to be a race-based crime. If it were, I would send Mr. Dobni to jail because that motivation is completely intolerable to this court,” he said.

Dobni was initially charged with assault with a weapon but pleaded guilty earlier this year to the lesser charge of assault.

Crown counsel Scott Quendack told the court that Dobni was walking in the area and swore at the men as he approached them. When Bhangu arose from his seat and told Dobni to stop cursing, Dobni struck him across the head so hard that his turban was knocked off and he fell to the ground.

There were discrepancies in witness reports about whether a beer bottle that Dobni had been holding was used to strike Bhangu.

Dobni, who lived in the neighbourhood, fled from the scene but was identified as the culprit a few days later after a resident took a picture of him and showed it to Bhangu.

Dhanu said the victim had been unable to identify Dobni in a police photo lineup, and he likely would have been acquitted had the matter gone to trial. But he said Dobni felt such remorse for the incident that he was compelled to plead guilty and take responsibility for his actions.

Caryer expressed concerns about the impulsive nature of the assault.

“You should be able to sit on a

bench in a park without someone coming up and hitting you,” he said.

Dahnu said Dobni committed “a violent act that was out of character in a time when he was emotionally unstable.” A mentor of his who ran a Christian-based youth drop-in centre had died of cancer a week before.

Dobni addressed the court, apologizing for his actions and saying he swore at the men because he was angry that they were looking at him. He said he attempted to walk away from the scene after Bhangu told him to stop swearing.

Caryer said probation would be the best option for Dobni, rather than house arrest or jail, because he did not believe he would ever be involved in another crime.

His conditions include completing 50 hours of community service, taking any counselling or psychological assessments recommended by his probation officer, not consuming or possessing alcohol or drugs, and having no contact with Bhangu.

Dobni will have no criminal record if he completes his 18 months’ probation without further incident.

The judge also agreed that a letter of apology that Dobni had written should be forwarded to Bhangu.

Kennedy will be recognized with a doctor of laws in the afternoon ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

UFV convocation ceremonies will be held at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, adjacent to the UFV campus at 33800 King Road in Abbotsford.

All ceremonies are free and open to the public, and will also feature the procession of UFV graduates for 2012.

LIQUOR LAWS New B.C. liquor regulations include a $575 fine for adults who buy alcohol for under-aged drinkers, or serve them in restaurants and pubs. The fines apply to serving staff who fail to check identification, in addition to penalties already in place for licensed establishments that serve under-aged drinkers. Those penalties range from fines of $7,500 to $10,000 or a licence suspension of 10 to 15 days.

Parents and guardians who provide alcohol to their under-19 children are exempt.

A garage sale in Abbotsford on Saturday raised $3,500 for a farming project and bio-sand filters for water purification in Kenya.

The Abbotsfordbased Imani Orphan Care Foundation plans to buy a 20-acre plot

Taxpayers feel ditched Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

The City of Abbotsford has told rural residents that they have to start keeping their ditches and watercourses clear and the water flowing, to prevent flooding and other problems.

They will be responsible for not only the maintenance work on ditches on municipal right-of-ways, but it must be done through a highways excavation permit they must obtain from city hall.

Similarly, they must maintain watercourses (creeks and streams), but only after obtaining a permit from the provincial Ministry of Environment and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

A letter from the city, dated May 9 but received by Sumas Mountain residents last week, also advises that those performing maintenance work on watercourses or ditches may wish to hire a

Sumas Mountain residents have been told they now have to clear roadside ditches. civil engineer and an environmental consultant to coordinate the permit approval and project.

Mel Kraft said he has lived on Sumas Mountain for 28 years, and “my ditches have always been cleaned.

“I don’t know how I would ever clean that ditch,” he said, adding he would have to hire someone at his own expense.

“Unlike them (the city) I don’t have a budget for it, and I don’t have equipment for it.”

The city stated it also has no budget for cleaning ditches. The letter to residents states that depending on workload, the city may be able do the work “at the owner’s expense.”

The letter also indicates: “At this time, the city does not collect any drainage taxes or user fees to maintain these drainage systems and there is no established budget to do any maintenance or improvements in these areas. In 2008, the city attempted to

implement a drainage fee in the uplands area to maintain roadside ditches; however, due to strong local opposition this drainage fee was never implemented.”

Strong opposition to the new fee came from the Rural Ratepayers Association, many who are based in Bradner.

Kraft lives in an area that was in the Fraser Valley Regional District up until 2010. He said his taxes have nearly doubled since coming under Abbotsford governance.

He receives garbage service, but is not on city sewer or water.

He said ditch maintenance generally consists of cutting back brush.

City officials were not available for comment by press deadline.

Twelve weeks of working out and eating veggies, led by Mayor Bruce Banman, gave Abbotsford a robust win in the Healthy Communities Challenge.

Cities were tracked on a points system, and they scored for participation, marketing and mayor’s involvement.

Abbotsford scored some 118,000 points compared to 57,000 from Surrey, 35,000 in Langley, and 16,000 by Coquitlam.

Banman was the most active mayor, and over the 12 weeks did 36 workouts.

Yoshia Burton, owner and manager of Abbotsford Innovative Fitness, did much of the mayor’s training personally. It included

“Abby kind of blew it out of the water – they did a great job,” said Curtis Christopherson of Innovative Fitness, which organized the event.

The three-month venture – in which participants learned how to get active and lead healthier lifestyles – encouraged 5,000 B.C. residents to sign up online and take part alongside others from their communities.

For each activity, participants earned points, which were then added to a larger pool and sorted by the community, to find which city gained the most points.

Through the challenge, the public could access free health and fitness advice.

Lance Klody was the man who died in a freak accident while falling a tree on May 31 in Aldergrove.

WorkSafe BC said it continues its investigation into why the bucket Klody was in broke away from the boom it was attached to, leaving the 50-year-old man to fall more than 60 feet to the ground.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was attempting to bring down a 130foot Douglas fir.

Messages from those who knew Klody say he owned his own tree falling business, Freelance Tree Services, based out of Abbotsford.

He was well liked and is missed by many friends in Langley and Abbotsford, along with family on the Island and elsewhere. According to his obituary, he loved his two dogs and his brother was looking to find a new home for them.

Watch interest rates The real estate industry can breathe a sigh of relief, as can many homeowners.

The Bank of Canada said last week that interest rate increases aren’t likely any time soon, given the economic uncertainty in Europe and many challenging economic situations across the world.

In that environment, an interest rate increase will just cause more trouble.

Nonetheless, homeowners with large mortgages would be wise to try to lock in low rates for as long as possible and, at the same time, do all they can to reduce their total debt.

Interest rates will not stay this low forever, just as they didn’t stay at 20 per cent in the early 1980s. Those high rates had a lot to do with the last significant housing price correction in the Lower Mainland.

At that time, some people simply walked away from their homes. It was a situation very similar to that in many U.S. cities in the past four years.

Here, the housing market has been very stable since the late 1980s. Prices

fluctuated in the 1990s, but for the most part they have been on a steady upward trajectory.

In recent years, prices have jumped to levels where many people are having difficulty buying a home. This is particularly true of single-family homes. Only low interest rates have kept many people in the market.

Interest rates also have other effects, on retired people on fixed incomes.

Low interest rates cut deeply into their purchasing power, as they are dependent on investment income for at least part of their income.

A long period of low interest rates, as we have seen, can wreak havoc on pension plans.

It all makes for many challenging situations. Saving is of limited benefit, but so is borrowing too much.

The best approach is to keep expenses under control and pay close attention to interest rates.

From the letter just received by property owners in the “rural uplands area,” it seems head of engineering Jim Gordon pulled the short straw this time.

According to his letter, this latest directive in abrogation of municipal responsibility applies to everyone who owns property outside the downtown core or on the flat farmlands of Sumas and Matsqui Prairies.

About three years ago, council decided that people who live on the highlands within the city should pay a drainage tax. The citizenry of those areas logically protested the taxation proposal – their lands naturally drained from the upland

slopes – and council wisely dropped the ‘revenue-generating without having to do anything’ plan.

The city’s engineering department, it appears, has now decided to whack all those folks who pointed out the ridiculousness of a “drainage tax” on mountain slopes, by refusing to clean out roadside ditches. Not that there has been, to my knowledge, an outcry to clean ditches. But not willing to leave things well enough alone, I’m sure the bureaucrats decided at one of the aforementioned ‘meetings’ it was time to spank us for not going along with another of their cash-grabs.

The letter sent out begins, “It is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain drainage systems in rural upland areas ....” and goes on to point out that these “systems” refer to roadside ditches, “generally located on city road allowance.”

Earth to engineering . . . they are your ditches! It is up to the city to maintain them, yet the letter goes on to declare that if a property owner does decide to undertake the cost of cleaning out the neighbourhood ditch, you’ll first need a permit (at a cost I would assume). And if you don’t do it, the city will – and “complete the drainage maintenance at the owner’s expense.”

So, despite the ditch past my property ostensibly draining much of Sumas Mountain, I’m responsible for its maintenance cost?

Is it a surprise people wonder why they pay taxes – average around here on the mountain is about $5,000 in annual taxes.

For that we get weekly garbage pickup. No sidewalks, no street lights, no city water, no sewers, no gas, not even bicycle lanes (don’t get me started on that again).

And now we have to pay, through the nose I imagine, to have our ditches

cleaned? And how much more to have the city’s road shoulders mowed to prevent blackberries from invading our properties, the least of which would be the benefit of trying to keep “the city” looking well-kept and attractive?

Since when are private property owners required to maintain city-owned lands and infrastructure? I thought we already did that through the taxes we pay.

I’ve come to understand that the new mayor, and a few councillors, are realizing that this city needs to be operated on the basis of common sense. This directive from the engineering department doesn’t pass the smell test of making sense.

I would suggest that the protest of upland property owners over the proposed and defeated drainage tax was minor compared to that being generated by this letter. My email inbox has already received a number of “this is BS” messages. I expect there will be more, though certainly not so many as will be sent to the city manager and mayor and council.

Do we want Abbotsford to become another mega-city?

Regarding the propsal by the Emerson Real Estate Group to develop up to 300 acres of agricultural land.

I don’t believe we need to question their projection of $4.7 billion and up to 5,000 jobs that this would

create.

The real question is whether we want Abbotsford to become another mega-city, and whether we’re willing to pay for it the only way we can, which is keep giving up agricultual land and eventually kiss

Environmental impact We need to hang on to and examine the purpose of the ALR. There is maybe a need to review it and consider changing it to the Environmental Land Reserve instead.

I oppose the removal of the lands in Bradner from the ALR. At one time I lived in South Surrey by the Stokes Pit area. It was changed to industrial zoning even though many people fought to not change it.

Now the government has let it come to light of the negative environmental impact it has to the area. It has affected the water table, causing area wells to run dry.

They have found it was a corridor for wildlife which lived along and migrated the Little Campbell River area.

I am sure there is impact already from the Gloucester area to the water run-off. We don’t need more.

The focus of the trip was teaching life skills, such as teamwork and listening, through lessons and games.

Overall, the trip was a success, said Joanna Sheppard, a UFV instructor and creator of the Champions for Health program.

Not only did the Antiguan students benefit from the experience through personal growth, but the UFV students did as well. “They became more confident in themselves,� said Sheppard. “A n d t h e y ’ve realized they are part of a bigger world – that teaching cannot only impact the Fraser Valley, and Canada, but also across the world.�

Still waiting for Obediah Couple return from trip to Sierra Leone Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford couple who had hoped to bring their orphaned nephew to Canada from Sierra Leone, Africa have to wait a little longer.

Albert and Sia Mackoty returned at the end of May from a one-month trip to their homeland. They had gone there not only to meet three-year-old Obediah for the first time, but to begin the steps involved in possibly adopting him.

Sia, speaking after their return, said they discovered adoption would be a costly and lengthly process.

Instead, they have decided to sponsor the boy to become a permanent Canadian resident.

“I’m hoping it won’t take that long because I want him to start school here when he’s six, and he has a lot of development to do,” she said.

Obediah is the son of Sia’s sister, Isata, who died in February

of malaria and typhoid. She had not told anyone who the father was, and he had not been involved in Obediah’s life.

Sia’s mother has since taken over his care, but she does not have the financial means to support him.

The village where she lives has no schools or running water.

Sia said Obediah will not have a good future if he remains in Sierra Leone.

“He lacks a lot of things,” she said.

The couple have already bonded with Obediah, who Sia describes as a “very friendly and very lovable boy” who adored going for car rides while they were visiting.

Sia hopes that she and Albert can also sponsor her mother to come to Canada, so that Obediah can retain his ties with his grandmother, who otherwise will be living alone.

Sia would also like her mom to be able to bond with her

and Albert’s children – Emmah, 2, and Anthony, eight months.

The Mackotys have been supported in their endeavour by Highland Community and Trinity Christian Reformed churches, which have fundraised for their travel and legal costs.

Friesen takes the helm for Cascades Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades didn’t have to look far to find their coach for the coming CIS men’s basketball campaign.

They will announce this week that assistant coach Adam Friesen will fill the shoes left by Barnaby Craddock, who left UFV for Edmonton and the University of Alberta Golden Bears last week. He will be on a one-year contract.

Craddock left after five seasons, including last year’s outstanding 13-5 campaign, a runner-up finish in

the Canada West final four, and a trip to nationals.

“It was a shock to the program. Everyone was disappointed,” Friesen said.

He acknowleged that Craddock left to further his career, given an opportunity to coach in one of the country’s great CIS programs.

“The players were sad, shocked, to see their only coach leave, but there was an understanding.”

Friesen, 29, has coached under Craddock for five seasons, and has experience as a head coach with the junior high school team at Yale Secondary. He

was a star player for the Yale Lions, where his father Al is the head coach, and then advanced to CIS with Trinity Western University and UBC. He won second team All-Canadian and a Canada West all-star honours.

Friesen said his selection is an endorsement of the path the team has been on, and the athletics department wants to try to keep it rolling.

“I know the program, the players and the team culture, and can keep that going,” he said.

He said it is a team atmosphere where the guys like each other, hang out together

off court, and make basketball a priority.

“Guys are ready and willing to put in the work and the time to make it happen.”

He said the program has never been healthier. All the starters are returning, and the new recruits are talented enough that some could offer immediate contributions. Among them is Mission Secondary standout Luke Morris, who led his team to a double A high school championship.

“I’ve never been more excited for a season to start,” said Friesen. “We’ve got a really good group of guys.”

He is already start-

event, the six-handicap golfer shot five balls at a pin 163 yards away, and four of them landed on the green. One of his qualifying shots came within four feet of the hole.

As promising as it looked, luck was not with him for the million-dollar drive. However, Kleisinger was the first-place winner after a shot that came 20 feet from the pin, and he took home several prizes from the event.

The top prize is a meal for up to eight, valued at $500, from Earls. A close second is lunch for him and his wife with Mayor Bruce Banman. “It should be interesting – I’m really looking forward to it,� he said.

He also received a gift certificate for Fraserglen, where he regularly uses the driving range, and a free spaying/neutering for a pet – he’s considering getting one.

In second place was Dave Blanchard at 44 feet, and third was Brodie Williams at 60 feet.

The event raised an estimated $35,000 this year which will go toward the new Campus of Care facilities adjacent to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Rotary organizers estimate the event has earned $350,000 for local causes over its 12-year run. “It was a lot of fun – they put on a great event,� said Kleisinger.

JOHNSON It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father and grandfather, Ivan Johnson.

Ivan peacefully slipped away in the early hours of June 4, 2012 with his loving wife and daughter by his side. Ivan put up one heck of a fight after a courageous and long battle, suffering the effects of a massive stroke. The youngest of a large family, Ivan was born in Regina, SK and raised on the homestead in Aylesbury, SK. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Flossie and Elmo Johnson, as well as many brothers and sisters. Ivan is survived by his wife, Pat Johnson; son Dan Johnson; daughter, Christine Johnson; as well as his precious granddaughters, Taija, Terynn and Regann Wiebe, whom he cherished more than life itself, the apples of Buppa’s eyes they were. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Herman (Helen) of Tucson, Arizona, Robert (Nellie) of Moose Jaw, SK; and three sisters, Ione Ward, Vera Feighan, both of Ottawa, ON and Rowena (Willy) Dinnin of Edson, AB as well as many nieces and nephews. Ivan was a longtime member of the IBEW for 45 plus years as well as a life-time member of the Eagles and the Legion. Ivan was a proud lineman and loved what he did and did it with the utmost pride. His strong work ethic began as a young boy on the old family homestead, which was one of his favourite places. Ivan enjoyed taking his 2 youngest granddaughters to garage sales; it was an all day adventure. The girls loved their outings with their Buppa as did he with them. He also looked forward to those early morning coffee chats with the boys. Ivan will be sadly missed by many. He was touched by so many, and many were touched by him. Many, many thanks to the staff at Maplewood House and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Marj McClary of Abbotsford passed away peacefully in her sleep May 31, 2012 at Menno Home. Marj struggled bravely with deteriorating health for the past 2 years but continued to live in her home on Mill Lake and only moved to Menno Home a short 2 weeks before her passing. Marj was born Marjorie Alice Sandys on June 24, 1921 in Trenville, Alberta to William Sandys and Leah Heap, and in 1930 moved to Langley as a teenager with her mother, stepfather and brother Bill. Marj taught school in the BC interior before meeting and marrying Art McClary in 1945. Marj and Art lived a very active life, balanced with business and pleasure. Although very involved with McClary Stockyards Marj would devote much of her time to family, tennis, swimming, biking and of course the blackberry picking season. Her life was full and satisfying. Marj was predeceased by her husband Art McClary, best friend and brother Bill Sandys and beloved niece Judy Mufford. Marj is survived by her children, Sheila Rushton (Abbotsford), Charlie McClary (Smithers) and Darcy McClary (North Vancouver) as well as 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Marj pre-arranged for her remains to be donated for research at UBC. Her request and wishes were that no funeral or memorial be held in celebration of her life and that we retain our own personal memories. One of Marj’s quotes was “Regret is a wasted emotion” and she had none. Marj was a great and influential mother, grandmother and friend and we will all miss her.

After a short illness, Steven passed away peacefully at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, with his family and friends at his side.

Steven was born in Fort Frances, ON, he spent his youth in Ontario and moved to BC to work in the dairy farming communities of the Lower Mainland.

Steven will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

Steven was predeceased by his father Theodore, his brothers Mickeal, Vincent and Kimberley.

Left to mourn is his mother Pearl Willard of Kelowna, BC, his brothers Joe (Denise) of Emo, ON, Derwent (Shannon) of Merritt, BC, his twin brother Stanley (Laura) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gregory, of Emo, ON, David (Darlene) of Duncan, Lawrence (Barb) of Powassan, ON, Michael (Sandy) of Kelowna, BC, John (Tammy) of Calgary, AL, his sisters Pat (Jim) of Kirkland Lake, ON, Judy (Ralph) of Cranbrook, BC, Theresa (DA) of Mabou, NS, Cheryl (Eldon) of LaValle, ON, Chandra (Jim) of Sarnia, ON, Charlene (Mike) of Forest, ON. Many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great nieces, as well as, several aunts and an uncle. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 13, in the chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 27555 31st Avenue, Aldergrove, BC. Ms. Ruth Barclay and Mr. Arnold Blonke will officiate.

WORKMAN James James “Jimmy” late of Abbotsford, BC passed away on May 31, 2012 at the age of 92 at the Cottage. He is survived by his step-brother Terry Jackson as well as all the nursing and care staff at the Cottage.

He was predeceased by his adopted parents Sylvia and Bill Workman. A special thank you goes out to Cal and Anne Moore for all the care and support they gave to Jimmy.

From birth Jimmy was diagnosed with polio and even though he was severely disabled he was always able to lend a helping hand to the nurses.
