The annual Family Fishing Weekend is a great time to sport fish in the British Columbia, when freshwater angling is free each Father’s Day weekend. Residents can fish without any need for a fishing licence on June 15-17 only, and visitors are offered a free, three-day licence for fishing during that weekend. An event at Horse Lake will be hosted by the province together with volunteers from the Lone Butte Fish & Wildlife Association.

The Family Fishing event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 16 at Cariboo Bonanza Resort, located on Watson Road, 16 kilometres east of 100 Mile House via Horse Lake Road. Event organizer Bill Mattershead says 18 lucky children will win a fishing rod-and-reel set, and everyone can enjoy the free hotdogs and cold drinks. The first 10 children to arrive, who don’t already have

Bring a boat if you can, but if you don’t have one, he says they can be rented at the resort by calling ahead to reserve at 250-395-3766. The event was hosted at No Name Lake for years, but Mattershead says Horse Lake

was chosen this year due to its easier access. The annual event is intended to rejuvenate family fishing activities in the province, for the benefits of fresh air and fun while enjoying the province’s beautiful outdoors and learning something about our native fish and their habitat. It also helps promote fishing licences to be sold over the rest of the year, which contribute nearly $1.2 billion to B.C.’s annual economy.
