This non-profit initiative has offices in each of the four western provinces and provides business information and services including business loans, advisory services and training options aimed at women business owners.

To access the Women’s Enterprise Initiative Loan Program, you must be: ❏ A legal entity 50 per

cent or more owned and controlled by a woman or women. ❏ Operating or about to operate in one of the four western provinces. ❏ Be able to submit a business plan that outlines a viable business (WEI will counsel you on how to develop a business plan). ❏ Seeking financing up to a maximum of $150,000. ❏ Seeking financing for start-up, expansion or the purchase of an existing business.

Changes observed in labour trends The employment rate for women in Canada has been rising steadily over the past three decades.

According to data collected by Statistics Canada, in 2009, 72.9 per cent of women with children under the age of 16 living at home were employed.

In 1976, the figure was 39.1 per cent.

For women under the age of 55 without children, the employment rate was 80.4 per cent.

Nearly seven out of 10 part-time workers in 2009 were women. This proportion has changed little over the past three

decades.

The number of selfemployed women has also increased. Women now account for 35.5 per cent of all self-employed workers, up from 31.2 per cent in 1990 and 26.3 per cent in 1976.

The majority of employed women continue to work in the field in which they have been traditionally concentrated.

According to the 2009 statistics, 67 per cent of employed women worked in teaching, nursing and health care, clerical or other administra-

tive positions or sales and service occupations. By contrast, 31 per cent of employed men worked in these fields.

At the same time, the number of women in several professional fields has increased.

In 2009, women made up 51.2 per cent of business and financial professionals, up from 38.3 per cent in 1987.

Women made up 55.2 per cent of doctors, dentists and other health professionals and 72.5 per cent of professionals in social sciences and religion.

As the old saying goes, “A woman’s work is never done.” Unfortunately, many women find this adage still rings true, particularly in regard to the workplace.

According to the AFLCIO, the average 25-yearold woman who works full-time, year-round until she retires at age 65 will earn $523,000 less than the average working man. Though women have made large advances toward economic equality, a disparity in pay between men and women still exists.

The term “glass ceil-

ing” refers to the unseen, barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder.

Despite progress, there are still many women earning less and getting left behind. There are strategies women can employ to change this. ❏ Be aggressive in negotiations. When negotiating salary, don’t be shy. Be aggressive when pursuing a salary that is commensurate with your experience. ❏ Get involved. Network with like-minded women who have already paved their own way in the

business sector. Women working in predominantly male fields can develop networking opportunities that are enjoyable to both men and women. ❏ Find a mentor. Networking remains one of the key ways to advance in the business world.

Seek mentors whose accomplishments you admire and who are willing to offer advice and encouragement. ❏ Start your own business. Women who find their careers have hit dead ends may want to consider going into business for themselves.

Skilled trades not just a man’s world Nicole Martini is an ordinary 24-year-old: she spends weekends with friends, enjoys the outdoors and recently moved into her own house.

However, there is nothing ordinary about her career path.

Martini is a third-year plumber apprentice and is among a growing number of women embracing non-traditional careers in the skilled trades.

After working part-time in retail for two years, she enrolled in a skilled trades exploration program offered at Okanagan College through the Women in Trades Training (WITT) initiative.

The program paid for her tuition and gave her a transportation subsidy.

By the end of the course, Martini knew she wanted to be a plumber.

“I loved what I was learning and knew it was the perfect career for me,” she says.

WITT connects unemployed or low-skilled women to training

opportunities across the province. It is funded through the CanadaBritish Columbia Labour Market Agreement and overseen by the Industry Training Authority (ITA), the provincial crown agency managing B.C.’s industry training and apprenticeship system.

According to Erin Johnston, manager of supply initiatives with ITA, many women are discovering that a career in the trades offers increased job satisfaction, independence and higher pay.

Johnston also notes more employers are sponsoring women apprentices in anticipation of expected labour shortages.

“As more tradespeople retire, some industries are already struggling with a shortage of skilled workers,” she says.

“Our training programs provide women with the skills and training they need to fill these

jobs.”

The programs remove barriers that keep women out of the trades by providing tuition, access to childcare and subsidies for transportation or tools.

Approximately 1,500 women have participated in Women in Trades Training programs since the initiative first started in 2008.

Currently there are more than 3,500 registered women apprentices in B.C., representing 10 per cent of all registered apprentices in the province.

Martini is now employed at a Kelowna-based plumbing company. She plans to become Red Seal certified and hopes more women consider a career in the trades.

Her one piece of advice for other women is this: “You can do it!”

I

t’s taken me a few years to get here, and it’s sure worth it.

Just about 30 years ago, I graduated from Loyalist College’s print journalism program and started my photography career as a photojournalist. I began work at the Kitchener-Waterloo Record. Then I worked for the Oakville Journal and became the first photographer for the Milton Canadian Champion. In that industry it was important to be quick and creative. And so I learned. At the same time, I was meeting all kinds of people and going to what seemed to me to be far away places. I was born and raised in BC, so the Mennonites of Elmira seemed pretty exotic.

In the mid- eighties, I returned to BC where I worked in Quesnel, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and Victoria before settling down in North Vancouver. There I began freelancing for businesses, newspapers, governments, and the logging and sawmill industry. At weddings, graduations and family reunions, I created an image to capture a moment that shows people at their best, at a very important time in their lives.

Most of my work has been “on location” meaning I use available light and sometimes a small studio pack. The location tells part of the story, and helps set the tone. My experience helps bring out the personality of the artist, family group, politician, or royalty.

Once my children left home, I felt it was a good time to move on and get refreshed and re-energized. I chose Summerland because of the beauty, closeness to other cities, and, very importantly, because I have family here, too.

Computers and the internet have made communications, processing, and delivering of images to clients easier and faster, and, thankfully, without the darkroom. I have spent a lot of time getting a print just right. Now, it takes only a few minutes.

My website, www.tomburleyphotography.com, is up and constantly being updated. It also shows that I am an accredited Professional Photographer of Canada. (PPOC) In my new home in Summerland, I finally have a garden where I can grow tomatoes with some hope of success while working on an outdoor garden portrait studio for individuals and groups.

Loan insurance a safe bet for the self-employed According to Desjardins Financial Security’s last retirement survey, 17 per cent of self-employed Canadians are carrying debt loads of $50,000 and up.

While this is substantially lower than the 83 per cent of respondents who self-identified as either employees or business owners carrying the same amount of debt, it’s still a concern because the self-employed have more to lose.

This is especially true if they ever became sick or disabled. For example, among those self-employed who participated in the survey, 64

per cent owned life insurance, 60 per cent contributed to an RRSP, but only 24 per cent owned disability insurance.

Nathalie Tremblay, Health Products Manager, Individual Insurance, at Desjardins Financial Security suggests that the self-employed consider loan insurance coverage because it repays the individual’s loans in case they were ever forced to stop working due to an accident or illness.

There isn’t a clause for pre-existing medical conditions, as is generally the case for this type of insurance.

The benefit is non-taxable and covers loans like mortgages, line of credit, RRSP loans, renovation loan, personal loan, car/ vehicle loan or long-term leasing, student loan, credit card, all other fixedterm loans with regular payments.

“This insurance is flexible because it takes into account that your loans may vary over time. This means that between the time you apply for the insurance and when a claim is submitted, as one debt commitment is repaid it may be replaced by others,” said Tremblay. www.newscanada.com

arilyn Adderley moved to the Okanagan with her husband in June 2011 to become the new Associate of Shoppers Drug Mart.

She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000, and has worked with Shoppers in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Alberta before settling in Summerland. She welcomed a second child to her family in November 2011. It was a busy year with the new job and increasing family.

Shoppers first opened it’s doors in 1999 and has been proud to serve the community ever since, offering a range of services. Finding a job in a difficult market Though the job market has gradually begun to recover, many men and women are still out of work.

In June of 2011, Statistics Canada reported that the unemployment rate was roughly 7.4 percent.

In the U.S., the rate was around nine per cent.

Each of those figures illustrates that many North Americans are out of work. But the unemployment epidemic is not exclusive to the U.S. and Canada. Across the pond in England, for instance, the Office for National Statistics reports

that nearly 2.5 million of the country’s residents were out of work, a figure that translates to roughly 7.7 percent of the country.

There are steps job seekers can take to ensure their job search is more smooth than stressful. ❏ Decide what you’re looking for. Job seekers who begin a job just hoping to land a job are less likely to find a position they will love and stick with. While it’s understandable to accept a job offer in the current economic climate even if it isn’t a dream job,

men and women who can afford to wait out their job search should exercise patience instead of simply accepting the first offer to come along.

Before beginning a search, determine exactly what you want to do.

Avoid being vague and be as specific as possible when discussing your goals with friends or a professional headhunter.

The more vague you are, the more likely you are to wade through thousands of listings, none of which might be what you’re truly looking for.

If certain companies are more appealing than others, target those that appear to be the best fit.

Once this background research has been completed, consult men and women within your professional network to see if they can offer any input into the companies that most appeal to you.

Even if you are currently unemployed you can still build your professional network.

While you might not have daily contact with individuals in your industry, you can work with professional organizations to build your network while you’re out of work. Professional organizations often offer seminars that serve as valuable opportunities to stay in touch with the industry and meet others who are currently working in the industry or looking to get back in.

Another way to build

a network is to reconnect with your school’s alumni network. Such networks are typically extensive and can be a great place to start your job search. ❏ Volunteer. While looking for a job, consider offering your time free of charge, particularly if you’re looking to change careers. Volunteering your time is a great way to get your foot in the door and can provide valuable insight as to what the industry is really like.
