Italian Day on the Drive

Managing Editor Martha Perkins 604-742-8695 editor@wevancouver.com

Commercial Drive is Vancouver’s original Little Italy. On June 10 from 12 until 8pm, “La Dolce Vita” will hit the street with food, entertainment, fashion, a children’s area and a celebration of all things Italian. There will be a bocce court, Italian-inspired food contests, grape stomping, pasta and watermelon eating and pizza tossing. Entertaining the crowd will be showman Federico Fuoco, singer Carmelina Cuop and Vancouver’s “patriarch of traditional Italian music” Gianni Fuoco. Vancouver fashion designer Rozemerie Ceuvas will host a fashion show of Jacqualine Conoir and JAC Collection. There’s also a chance to win a trip to Rome with a five-day stay at a Tuscan wine estate as part of a fundraising raffle. Please note: Commercial Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic from 3rd Avenue to Parker Street. ItalianDay.ca. Before you head over to Commercial, drop by the Italian Cultural Centre at 3075 Slocan Street to watch the Azzumi battling Spain in the European Cup championship on the large-screen TVs. The game is live at 9am and tickets for the breakfast are $16 for adults, $8 for children younger than 12. Advanced tickets are required for the breakfast (call 604-430-3337 to reserve) but you can cheer on Italy for free.

Richard Henriquez June 7-30 As an architect, Richard Henriquez has helped shape the way we live in our world. From June 7 to 30, he’ll be sharing his sometimes quirky, sometimes poetic view of the world at Winsor Gallery (3025 Granville, WinsorGallery.com) Richard Henriquez: Narrative Fragments is his first exhibit since his highly regarded Memory Theatre installation that premiered at the Vancouver Art Gallery, travelled to the Canadian Centre for Architecture and was exhibited at the Venice Biennale. It features a number of two-dimensional light-box works, a sculptural installation and several tripod sculptures. He wants us to imagine the stories of how these objects and images came to be and exactly who, or what they are. The gallery is hosting an artist’s reception from 6 to 9pm on Thursday, June 7. The gallery is open Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 6pm and Sundays 11am to 5pm.

Portrait photography makes memories It may not be Mother’s Day, but the selflessness of motherhood is what inspired photographer Kyrani Kanavaros of Klik Photographic (KlikPhotographic.com) to start The Glamour Sessions, an editorial-style photo shoot, similar to a magazine spread, celebrating real women. Just like starlets and supermodels, clients prep for the shoot with professional hair and makeup, styling, and designer clothing and are shot in a modern studio by the acclaimed portrait photographer. Kanavaros was inspired to branch into this type of photography when a Klik client booked a portrait session before her 40th birthday because she wanted beautiful pictures of herself to pass on to her family one day. The client’s own mother had recently passed away and left none behind. This resonated with Kanavaros, who as a mother, knows that women are always holding the camera, and seldom see the other side of the lens. Stylist Helen Baker of Stylefinder (Stylefinder.ca) works with local boutique Libertine (LibertineBoutique.ca) to create dramatic, modern looks for the portraits. They can also be used professionally for building personal brands; Kanavaros has seen bloggers, publicists, boutique owners, artists and designers coming in for sessions. The Glamour Sessions take place June 9. For more information, contact Noelene Searle Valleau at noelenes@shaw.ca or call 604-725-9428.

Art snobs What is it with so many contemporary art galleries? Why is it that they feel that only they know the (supposed) meaning of contemporary, conceptual and abstract art? Their attitude is typically: “We know what it’s all about, you can’t be expected to understand it, but don’t you worry your little head about it . . . just take our word for it, pay us a lot of money and impress your friends by having an obscure conversation piece hanging over your mantlepiece”. The Emperor’s New Clothes or what? Cynical West End art love

I wanted to thank the 10 or more people who came to my aid this week when an off-leash pit bull dashed up from the water at English Bay and attacked my on-leash dog. If so many strangers had not come to our aid, my dog would be dead with his throat ripped open. I hope the owner of that dog figures out how to be a responsible owner before a child is killed. The police were helpful, prompt and kind but were not empowered to do anything. I don’t think anything can change a grown dog like that. Any breed can kill or maim, but pit bulls have it bred into them, and they take a knowledgable owner. That guy was not. Anonymous, via email

When a dance is not just a dance: series explores art as catalyst for change By Martha Perkins

When did you first realize that the arts were going to play an important role in your life?

T

he Vancouver International Song Institute’s Arts of Conscience is a five-day series of talks and films exploring the power of art as a catalyst for positive social change. It runs June 11 to 15 at VanCity Theatre (1181 Seymour). One of the presenters is Judith Marcuse, internationally renowned dancer/ choreographer and director of the International Centre of Art for Social Change at SFU. Her talk is June 11 at 5:30pm. Full details at SongFire.ca

Being involved in the arts was never a decision, as much as it was a verdict. I started taking dance lessons at the age of four and grew up in the world of dance and the arts. There was never any one moment that determined my role in the arts; it was always just a part of my life.

Who was your biggest influence? My mother is a pianist and my aunt was my first dance teacher. Both were major influences as was, when I INFORMATION FEATURE

was growing up in Montreal, being taken to see lots of music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. Then, at the age of 15, I was privileged to attend the Royal Ballet School in London. There it was a feast for the senses! Being a teenager in London during the time of Carnaby Street and The Beatles was amazing. The arts were exploding and new worlds opened up for me.

Do you feel you had the power to affect change as an artist? My family is very politically and socially aware, and I enjoyed a childhood where the arts and social change went together. My choreography often contained social content. One example was the five-year ICE Project (through Judith Marcuse Projects) which addressed the issues that can lead to teen suicide. Over the course of the project, we received many letters from young people, telling us that doing our workshops or seeing the performance kept them from attempting suicide. It was one of the most powerful experiences of my life.

Vancouver wants to be known as the greenest city in Canada. What can we do to make it the most artistically/culturally aware city? We could make it a city in a province that supports the arts and artists themselves. We need

to make it possible for artists to afford to live here; we also must increase BC’s provincial support of our sector which is presently one-third of the average in Canada. Right now, we’re experiencing the worst crisis we’ve had in the arts in the 35 years that I’ve lived here in BC. I see colleagues making the difficult decision to move elsewhere so that they can make a decent living and support their families.

On June 9, East End illustrator and artist Julie Morstad will be leading a workshop called Circus! as part of Vancouver Draw Down. Doug Shanks photo

Festival to prove everyone can draw Julie Morstad will show kids how at Vancouver Draw Down By Shawn Conner

J

ulie Morstad has news for those who think they can barely draw a stick figure. If desire to draw is there, says the Vancouver artist, just about anyone can learn to express themselves through pen and ink. “Drawing is seeing and thinking, says Morstad, reached at her East Van home. “It’s basically about slowing down and looking, too. I definitely do think drawing is a very important and very learnable skill. To illustrate her point (pun intended), Morstad — who might best be known for her cover art for the 2006 Neko Case album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood — is taking part in Vancouver Draw Down. The annual daylong art celebration (Sat., June 9) offers 27 free workshops in 19 locations across Vancouver. Murals, typography, portraits and still lifes are among the many different types of drawing that will be discussed, taught and encouraged, for artists of all different levels of experience, from the closet Pictionary buff and practised doodler to those who want to show off their mad charcoal skills. Morstad’s workshop, at Collage Collage (621

Kingsway, from 2 – 4 p.m.), is called Circus! Aimed at three-to-six-year-olds — though anyone is welcome — the idea is to create a paper circus, complete with elephants, ringleaders, and other big-tent characters. “There’ll be items designed by me, like drawings and colouring pages, says Morstad. “They’ll be interactive so kids can cut them out and add to them and do their own drawing. A mom of three and a children’s book illustrator, Morstad has another, more macabre side to her. In eerie, elegant drawings, some of which she has collected in one volume (Milk Teeth) with another on the way, little girls are held captive by their own hair and miniature women, stranded on top of a dapper gentleman’s head, tumble off one by one. “With my own work, I’m trying to describe things that are hard to explain with words, she says. “I usually have an image, then try to figure out what it means later. But that’s for another workshop. Devon Brooks, right, started Blo hair salon with her mother Judy and Val Litwin. They’re the ones who helped her cope with post-traumatic stress disorder after two violent attacks left her depressed and unable to function. They were the vessels into which she poured her pain, giving her support when she needed it most and encouragement when she rebuilt her life. Today she is a sought-after motivational speaker who wants to tell other women — and society at large — that by talking about the bad things that happen to them, as part of social conversation,“to let light shine where violence has cast a shadow.” Doug Shanks photo

hen you sit down to talk to Devon Brooks, you expect the conversation to be about her trip to Nice as part of the Canadian delegation of young entrepreneurs at the G20 summit. Or maybe the phenomenal success of Blo, the wash-and-blow-dry business she established in Vancouver with her mother and a business partner. Perhaps you’re turning to her for advice on how to brand your business since she’s done so well at branding hers. What you least expect is for her to tell you about being raped by a family friend when she was 18 or that horrifically terrifying day when an ex-boyfriend broke into her apartment saying that if he couldn’t have her, no one would. And you are certainly taken aback when she tells you her story in a calm, easygoing manner. How can this beautiful, self-possessed 25-year-old woman (who would make other women jealous if she weren’t so darned warm-hearted) be telling you about being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and how tempting it was to kill herself rather than spend hours every day convincing herself to get out of bed. Really? This gracious, soft-spoken, talented business maverick once passed out because her panic attack made her cry so much that she couldn’t breath? “Most victims are caught in feeling terrible all the time,” she says. “This is about me taking the reins and sparking the conversation. I need to be able to talk more about it as social conversation.” At the recent TEDXKidsBC at Science World, Brooks told her young audience that “we can’t live in fear of conversation. We think trauma happens to one person. No, it happens to us. It’s all interpersonal. Each of us plays a role in changing that dialogue. We have to embrace vulnerability and encourage victims to tell their stories, to let light shine where violence has cast a shadow.” A friend asked her why she’s willing to shine such a public spotlight on what are so deeply personal parts of her life. Brooks shrugs her shoulders. “This is life. Life is messy. This stuff is happening everywhere.” She’s not discounting the role that therapy or medication can play in helping people cope with traumatic events. She’s not saying that her way of taking back possession of her life — confronting the victim in her but not

allowing herself to remain victimized — is the only way to recover. But talking about it, and not in hushed tones, is what has worked for her. And she wants to encourage others — both the people who are victims and the people they tell their stories to — to be able to tell and listen to these stories without drama. Violence is happening to people all around us, every day. We need to be able to able to talk about it as part of our everyday lives.

How the story begins Devon was 18 when she and a girlfriend accepted the invitation from a known and trusted friend to stay overnight at his parents’ house in Montreal. As her girlfriend slept in a nearby room, he raped Devon. She was able to escape, was taken to a rape clinic and then immediately flew home to Vancouver. Three years later she was renting an apartment in London, England, where she was attending university. There was a knock on the door. It was an old boyfriend who forced his way in. He barricaded the apartment, put her phone’s SIM card in his mouth so she couldn’t call for help, grabbed a knife “and terrorized me for hours. “I was scared beyond belief. He told me to write down my last words to my family. He said if he couldn’t have me, no one could.” Even though her apartment walls were so thin that she could hear her neighbours brush their teeth, none of her neighbours called the police when they heard the disturbing sounds coming out of her apartment. Devon was on her own. Once again she escaped and went to the police. Eventually the ex-boyfriend was sent to prison. She then had to find a way to cope with the emotional aftermath which hit her with paralyzing force. “Sexual and violent trauma is an act between people; it changes the way we feel about humanity,” she says. “I started to realize that what is most difficult about moving on us the conversations I’d have to have. People don’t want to talk about it. They’re scared to be vulnerable. They were afraid it would make [the violence] more real.” Since 61 per cent of sexual assaults happen to people who are younger than 18, special care was made to invite teenagers to her TEDX talk. There must have, by odds, been people who had been victimized, or who knew someone who had been victimized. Brooks needed them to know it was not only okay to talk about it but it was something they, and society, had to do. “We can’t live in fear of conversa“Living an extraordinary life means experiencing a deeper, more authentic connection with yourself,” says ConsciousDivas.com. “This leads to positive shifts in your physical and mental well-being, your wealth and relationships, while enjoying more fun, peace and ease in your life.”

tion…. There is no in-between. You are either a bystander or a difference-maker in the face of changing trauma.” Your genes can absorb the impact of trauma. Your psyche certainly carries the burden. Brooks was diagnosed with PTSD and depression. She was exhausted, sad every day. She was surrounded by people around her but they didn’t know what to do to help. Her mother, Judy, was an incredible support, always by her side, doing what she could to help, as was their business partner at Blo, Val Litwin. They could see how the numbed she was; she struggled to put her feelings into words. One days Devon said to Val, “I just feel so… so… so….” “Do you feel trapped,” he asked. “Yes,” she exclaimed, and in that moment a door opened. Val neither over-reacted by what came flooding out, nor did he close the door because he didn’t want to listen. It’s not that Devon wants to talk about her rape and assault all the time, it’s just that she’s realized she needs to encourage others to speak openly and without shame about what’s happened to them. In telling her story, she’s been amazed by how many stories have been told to her. “The beauty about it is that things come to the surface. It’s not taboo. The more we have these conversations, the less big they’ll feel.”

And how to tell a new story The experience is leading Devon’s life in a new direction. She’s not working on the day-to-day operations at Blo — which has expanded to 19 locations in BC, Alberta, Ontario and five US states — and is now helping others build their dreams. She’s in demand as a motivational speaker, an inspiration and the go-to person for branding and modernizing other people’s businesses. She’s on the radar of Flare (one of 13 Bright Young Things), Chatelaine (Hot 20 Under 30), and CityTV, where she appeared as a business personality in a docu-sitcom. Meeting for breakfast the other morning in Gastown, Brooks was asked about finding that balance between the benefits of talking about the traumatic things in our lives and knowing when you can’t let that story become the entire narrative of your life. “This is your story and you have to live it,” she says, “but there comes a time when you have to create room for a new story. There has to be a point where the story ends.” Her story’s end is all about new beginnings. The evening is designed for “divas and dudes... who yearn for a life that is conscious, connected and beyond ordinary.” The first-time Vancouver event is at the HR Macmillen Space Centre (1100 Chestnut) starting at 7pm. Tickets are $40 and are available at ConsciousDivas.com.

y sisters and I grew up in a bi-racial family. My mom left the Philippines in her mid-20s and my dad is ethnically from Goa (India) and born and raised in Hong Kong. This marriage of cultural influences meant we went for dim sum regularly (where my Dad ordered in perfect Cantonese), ate curries and chapatis, Filipino food, and anything out of my mom’s North American cookbook. My parents hosted dinner parties all the time. As their daughters, we dutifully handed out appetizers, made sure the drinks were topped and helped with the clearing of the plates. My parents were a great team. They also kept a vegetable garden. This meant we went through

the beet years, (even to this day two of my sisters can’t stand the sight of them) and the zucchini years (who knew you could make so many dishes with zucchini?). There were plums and apples that turned into jams and chutneys. Now, I am a busy working mother of two. I am co-owner of a contemporary design shop on Cambie Street called Walrus. My sisters and I are as close as any parents could hope their children to be. We love food, cook and bake from scratch. We are doing our best to raise our children in the same manner we were raised. We are rooted in family, where contributing to the household is not rewarded with money, but with the expectation that we all have to take part in our home lives. I love my mixed nationality and I hope my kids do too, because they’re even more mixed than I am!

The Joy of Feeding celebrates cooking as an act of love By Martha Perkins

C

aroline Boquist has stayed up until four in the morning to prepare a dinner party for 10 people. She gets up at six every morning to cook breakfast for her son. All this on top of running a contemporary design shop on Cambie called the Walrus. Why? We all know of people who love food. Boquist is one of those people who uses food to show her love and on June 10 there will be lots of love to share at the Joy of Feeding. She’s one of the home cooks who will be featured in the fundraising feast for and at UBC Farms. Her Goan lamb vindaloo is on a menu that is as culturally diverse as it is delicious, taking patrons on a culinary trip around the world without ever having to leave Vancouver. “I believe very strongly that cooking is an act of love,” says Meeru Dhalwala, who owns Vij’s and Rangoli restaurants with her husband Vikram Vij. She came up with the idea last year as a way of supporting UBC Farms, which embodies her belief in local, sustainable, health-inducing agriculture. She also wanted a way to re-instate the joy of cooking as something we do because we care, not because it’s a chore we are forced to do. Sharing home-cooked meals with her family has helped forge the type of strong bonds that can withstand almost any pressure (including teenaged children at odds with their parents) and, in a way, the Joy of Feeding restores value to a woman’s role as nurturer. Moms, she notes, are “the first cooks of humanity.” That’s why there are no celebrity chefs at this $50-a-ticket event. We’re not to bow down to the great kitchen gods. We instead are to be inspired by

people who are like us, people who have to juggle work and home and me-time and still enjoy a meal that doesn’t come out of a box (or plastic take-out bag.) It recognizes that while there are times when we don’t necessarily feel the joy of cooking, we all appreciate the joy of eating a homecooked meal. “We’re happy that we are capable of nurturing the people we love,” says Mary McKay, the head baker and co-owner of Terra Breads, as well as a working mother. But isn’t this heaping more onto a woman’s plate? Boquist says “I just make it a priority. For me it’s cultural. I saw my mom go to the effort of baking and cooking for us so we could sit around and be together. Everyone puts a value on things. My family puts value on food and cooking for people.” In her introduction to the cookbook that highlights the 16 dishes to be shared at the Joy of Feeding, Dhalwala writes, “Hassles are a psychological frame of mind. You decide what is a hassle and what isn’t.” As much as preparing food for others can be perceived as just one more hassle in our day, “having the emotional satisfaction that you are carrying on a million-year tradition, which has kept us alive, healthy and together, is not a hassle. “Cooking satisfies a yearning to love and care for others. And the others will love and care for you back. That is not a lonely hassle. That is the Joy of Feeding.” Organizers promise that you will go home from the Joy of Feeding feeling very well loved and nurtured. To find out more about the festival, and to buy tickets, go to JoyOfFeeding.com. To why UBC Farms is such a worthwhile beneficiary, go to UBCFarm. UBC.com.

Time for a picnic. Here’s what to pack OnThePLATE By Andrew Morrison

W

ith the good weather upon us, we should all be taking every opportunity from now until Labour Day to dine outdoors. While I could go on about the many new restaurants that are currently test-driving their new patios (and I will in a column soon), it’s best to first talk about guerilla picnicking, specifically where to shop (and where to bring it).

West Side While there are many parks and parklets, the water’s where it’s at on the West Side, so we’ll begin by zeroing in on Jericho, Spanish Banks and Kits Beach. If you’re BBQing, I’d recommend paying a visit to Finest At Sea for fresh seafood (4675 Arbutus, 604-266-1904, FinestAtSea.com) and The Honest Butcher for meat (3209 West Broadway, 604-733-2220, TheHonestButcher.com). At the latter, which sources from local and organic suppliers, you should also consider picking up some house-made country pate or a terrine or two (they’re delicious). And if you’ve brought your dog along for the outing, they make some mean chow chow, too. If you aren’t going to be grilling and prefer to do take-out, La Ghianda is ideal for sandwiches, strudels, cannolis, and a variety of hot foods; they do an especially marvellous vitello alla limone and are tops in the pasta department (2083 Alma, 604-566-9559, LaGhianda.ca). Should the day and the company call for simpler, more nostalgic

fare, Moderne Burger (2507 West Broadway, 604-739-0005, ModerneBurger.com) is a must if you’re at Spanish Banks or Jericho (much superior to the concession stands at both), and if you’re at Kits Beach and have kids to consider, give the tiny Nimby Burger stand a try at the foot of Yew Street (2210 Cornwall Ave, nimbyburger.com). A simple, small hamburger with lettuce, tomato and onion costs just $3.49, and my kids are suckers for them.

Downtown For picnics in the downtown area, Save On Meats is a must if you’re doing a BBQ on a budget. I’m a fan of their apple and sage sausages, and they have a dizzying selection of beef, chicken, pork and lamb cuts to choose from (43 West Hastings, 604-569-3568, SaveOnMeats.ca). They do seafood, too, but I’d sooner pop over to Granville Island Market or False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf for direct buying and breadth of selection. Parking may be a nightmare, but GIM is one of this city’s best food assets, and taking advantage of it for al fresco pop-ups is a no brainer. As for foods that are ready to eat, the choices abound. Score some sandwiches at the newly opened second location of Meat & Bread if you’re planning to lounge near Coal Harbour (1033 West Hastings, 604-566-9003, MeatAndBread.ca); hit up Raincity Grill’s take-out window for sustainable fish and chips if you’re heading to English Bay (1193 Denman, 604-685-7337, RaincityGrill.com); stop in at Salsa & Agave for thick burritos if you’re headed to David Lam Park in Yaletown (1223 Pacific Boulevard, 604-408-4228); head underground to

You don’t have to do all the cooking for a picnic. Local restaurants, cafés and butchers can do it for you. Andrew Morrison photo Nuba for reliable, punchy Lebanese if you’re bound for Victory Square Park; and if you’re destined for any spots in between, take in all the street food you can possibly find (I’m partial to the rotisserie chicken and gravy sandwiches from La Brasserie and the fish tacos from Tacofino). Because of City Hall’s forward-thinking curation — using food writers and chefs on the selection panel the duds are very few and far between. Our street food vendors should be every downtown picnickers’ best friends!

East Van As far as East Van is concerned (my own neck of the woods), I love Big Lou’s Butcher Shop for pork ribs, sausages, and rubbed steaks (269 Powell, 604-566-9229, BigLousButcherShop.com). The butchers are extremely helpful, and the quality of the meats is high. Also for the BBQ, pick up some fresh seafood at The Daily Catch on The Drive (1418 Commercial, 604-253-3474, DailyCatch.org). For picnics in and around

Strathcona, get some curry chicken pockets from nearby Union Market (810 Union, 604-255-5025, UnionMarket.ca), sushi from Fuyija (912 Clark, 604-251-3711, Fuijya.ca), and cheeses from Les Amis du Fromage (843 E Hastings, 604-253-4218, BuyCheese.com). For the residential green spaces flanking Main St., check out East Is East for Tibetan Mantu and plump Afghan boulani (4413 Main, 604-879-2020, EastIsEast.ca), Splitz Grill for burgers every which way (4242 Main, 604-875-9711, SplitzGrill.com), and Le Marche St. George for sandwiches, coffee, pain au chocolate, and fantastic salumi (4393 St. George, 604-565-5107, MarcheStGeorge.com). For Hastings-Sunrise, load up on baked goods and treats from the East Village Bakery (2166 East Hastings, 604-568-5600, EastVillageBakery.com); Reubens — the best in the city — from The Red Wagon (2296 East Hastings, 604-568-4565, RedWagonCafe.com); and charcuterie from Moccia Urbani (2276 East Hastings, 604-255-2032, Moccia.ca).

The award-winning Vancouver landscape architect is launching her debut book, Edible Landscaping: Urban Food Gardens That Look Great at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks on June 9. For her, size doesn’t matter. She is as considerate of the condo owner who has a windowsill garden as she is of the homeowner who wants to grow more of her food. Harbour Publishing says Edible Landscaping includes advice on the most resilient and rewarding edible plants, and detailed plans for 15 types of urban gardens, from green roofs to children’s gardens to hanging containers. What to drink with chips, or sushi, or even rhubarb pie CityCELLAR By Kurtis Kolt

A

few great bottles have come and gone around the house lately, ones I’ve been meaning to share as particularly good foodpairing wines. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Matchbook 2009 Syrah | Dunnigan Hills, California | $17.99 | BC Liquor Stores For some reason, I haven’t been having a lot of Californian wines lately. I think the last few that I’d had were pretty big and bold, those fruit-bomb styles that are coupled with upwards of 16% alcohol that leave you purple-toothed and sluggish. Not so with this French-styled Syrah that’s loaded with blackberries, blueberries and a whole spice-rack of character, cinnamon, clove, pepper, nutmeg and anise. A good medium weight, those dusty spices went quite well with our pork roast that had a rhubarb and apple compote for a little zing.

Cedar Creek 2011 Eherenfelser | Okanagan Valley, BC | $22-ish | Private Wine Stores It’s been years since I had Cedar Creek’s Ehrenfelser and I’d forgotten how much it simply dazzles. We should be paying more attention to this one, not only because we’re one of the only places in the world to grow the grape (a German cross of Riesling and Silvaner,) but also because the vines that produce the fruit are 35 years old, lending much character and finesse to the mandarin orange, kaffir lime and honey elements

that are gently swathed with perfect minerality and pitch-perfect acidity. It’s just so darn pretty and fresh. Twist off that cap when you’re having Indian curries, Thai food or even notoriously hard-to-pair sushi or sashimi.

Poggiotondo 2011 Bianco | Tuscany, Italy | $16.99 | BC Liquor Stores I dare you to have just one glass. Alberto Antonini’s sunny Tuscan blend of Vermentino, Trebbiano and Malvasia is generously juicy, all awash with blood orange, pineapple, lychee and meyer lemon. There’s a few white flowers blooming in there too, jasmine and verbena, making it a highly quaffable pairing for poultry, seafood, a sunny veranda or a plain ol’ bag of chips.

Tommasi 2008 “Ripasso” Valpolicella | Veneto, Italy | $29.99 | BC Liquor Stores Savoury elegance out of north-east Italy that’s made from a blend of Corvina, Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinon grapes, but this one’s way more about the sum than its parts. The ‘Ripasso’ part means that the wine has been put through extended maceration (or ‘re-passed’) with dried Amarone skins, adding more depth, more richness and more oomph. This is a wine that transports you to Italy, mixed olives, herbs, plums and dark fruit that’s been aged in Slovenian oak barrels for 18 months, rounding out those edges and making the whole package silky-smooth. Believe it or not, a perfect pairing for Italian food. For more wine news and views go to KurtisKolt.com or follow me on Twitter@Kurtis Kolt.

Fresh at the farmers market: chives By Jenn Chic

C

hives are milder than their allium cousins — onions, shallots and garlic — but their soft oniony essence is especially versatile in the kitchen. The leaves bruise easily so are best harvested and prepared with scissors. Snip the leaves fine and sprinkle with wild abandon on omelettes, salad, fish or boiled new potatoes with butter. The purple pom-pom blossoms are tasty and beautiful in salad and when picked regularly will promote the growth of the leaves. To store chives, wrap them in a moist paper towel in the fridge for up to five days. They can be kept in the freezer for up to six months but are best preserved in oil or vinegar. FRESH CHIVE OIL A beautiful bright green oil to drizzle over grilled asparagus or use in salad dressings.

In a blender, puree: 1 large bunch of chives, minced ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil or sunflower oil Salt Strain through a fine sieve, coffee filter or cheesecloth and store in the fridge for up to five days in a tightly closed bottle. CHIVE BLOSSOM VINEGAR A sexy pink vinegar that can be used anywhere and everywhere or tie it with a bow for a delicious gift. Soak in cold water, to clean 2+ cups chives blossoms. Spin in a salad spinner to dry and place in a 1 litre jar. The jar should be 1/2 to 2/3 full. Fill jar with white wine vinegar. Close tightly and let sit in a cool dark place for a 2 weeks. Strain through a coffee filter or cheese cloth into a new sterilized bottle. Jenn Chic is the market manager for the Kitsilano and Kerrisdale Farmers Markets. JennChiccooks.com

Don’t miss this! SPECIAL SHOW

Norm MacDonald June 21-23 Tickets to this Special Show are $40 (tax incl.) available at the box office in advance 604-696-9857 Marking her debut at the Vancouver festival, Jill Barber performs twice on June 30.

Jazz Fest invitation makes Jill Barber feel at home By Shawn Conner

I

n the opening episode of the latest season of the hit AMC TV series Mad Men, millions of North Americans were introduced to a littleknown French pop song from the ‘60s. But at least one person knew “Zou Bisou Bisou”, sung by French-Canadian actress Jessica Pare, immediately. “I’ve always loved that song,” says Jill Barber, reached at her West End home. “I was shocked to hear it. I thought it was totally obscure. It was a pretty big moment.” Perhaps Pare’s rendition of “Zou Bisou Bisou” will pave the way for Barber’s next album. A record of French pop songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s, the project will detour somewhat from the direction of her last two releases, Chances and Mischievous Moon, on which the Toronto-raised Barber reinvented herself from a coffeehouse singer/songwriter to a torch singer. Both featured mostly original material.

Jazz Fest brings the party to downtown Vancouver for first time For the first time, the TD Vancouver Jazz Festival is moving downtown, making it the biggest community party since the 2010 Olympics. The festival will become an “arts and music village” on the downtown site with three live performance stages, a family zone, a community fair, art installations, an artisan and food market, two outdoor licensed bistros, busker entertainment and free dance classes. The two main stages include five bands a day (20 bands in total over the weekend) beginning at 12:30pm. Bands from as far afield as France, NYC and Toronto and as close to home as down the street or across town will come to play. — Reprinted from CoastalJazz.ca, which has the full line-up of concerts and events, as well as news updates and ticket sales.

The upcoming record, which Barber begins recording this summer in Toronto, has its origins at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. A couple of years ago, wanting to impress the audience at the world-renowned event, Barber performed a French translation of one of her songs. A chanteuse was born. “It was this pivotal moment,” says Barber. “I felt like I had braved singing onstage in a different language for the first time, and I made a public declaration there onstage: I was determined to get my French back.” If that performance marked her acceptance by a French-speaking audience, her upcoming TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival shows (two on June 30) signifies another kind of welcome. “I have to say I was really, really pleased to be invited to perform at it,” says Barber. “I’m still really new here in Vancouver, I still feel like an outsider. Now I’m not only being welcomed to the jazz festival but also the Vancouver jazz community.”

The Pack A.D. has learned to expect the unexpected That’s what will make performing at Live at Squamish so exciting By Emma O’Dea

L

The Pack A.D. performs August 26.

ive shows are always unpredictable and Maya Miller, half of the Vancouver garageband The Pack A.D., knows that when weird stuff happens, you gotta just go with it. “I’ll never forget this one night in France when we were on tour. This girl, who we later found out had driven over six hours to get there, jumped on stage and grabbed the mic. She just started rocking out and Becky [the singer] freaked out.” With secured indoor concerts managing to get that crazy, there’s no telling what’s going to go down at this year’s highly anticipated Live at Squamish music festival. The Pack is among the incredible lineup for this year’s event, which boasts some internationally acclaimed artists including The Tragically Hip, The Sheepdogs and The Airborne Toxic Event. Composed of singer/songwriter and guitarist Becky Black and drummer/songwriter Maya Miller, the long-time friends originally created short films together. Since 2006 they have been rocking out all across Canada and the United States, as well as Europe and the UK. Having never previously travelled before becoming a musician, Miller agrees that having fans even as far way as France is incredible. “We actually recorded a couple of our songs in French. The fans thought it was very ‘cute.’” How does the band feel about being on the Live at Squamish lineup?

“When you start getting invited to festivals, you know you’re doing something right,” says Miller. Amongst the line-up, she and Black are very excited to see City and Colour, as well as Vancouver natives Mother Mother. Festivals, however, are nothing new to the Pack. Miller highlights Edgefest in Toronto as well as Ottawa Blues Fest as two very memorable experiences. “Festivals are completely different from indoor venues. Everything sounds completely different and things are very last minute. There are no sound checks. But basically the day is just one very big party,” she says. She adds with a laugh that, like many festival-goers, they look forward to meeting other artists and “getting drunk in our tent.” While there is much fun to be had as a musician, Miller is grateful for all of the experiences she has been given. “Every day I get to be a creative person. It feels great to do what I love.” Apart from great music, this year’s Live at Squamish festival will feature tons of fun activities, including a silent disco, an artisan village and, to top it all off, an absolutely breathtaking location. Situated on Loggers Sports Ground, with the majestic Stawamus Chief as a backdrop, it’s guaranteed to be one of the most beautiful venues you’ll ever see. Catch the Pack A.D. and many other great artists at this year’s Live At Squamish, August 24,25 and 26. For tickets go to LiveAtSquamish.com. Attention musicians and bands: Live at Squamish is hosting a band contest this week where up and coming bands have the opportunity to win their way in to the LIVE at Squamish lineup. Bands only have one week to send in their videos before the voting begins. The band with the highest votes will have the opportunity to play at this year’s festival! Last year it was a huge hit with more than 120 entries in one week.

Five things on your Live At Squamish to-do list The music might be the main reason you go to Live at Squamish, but don’t let it be the only reason. We asked organizers to come up with their list of five other must-do activities over the weekend. 1. Get out of the hot sun and check out the silent disco nestled amongst a grove of trees 2. Decorate your tent inside the glamping zone for a chance to win $500 and upgrades 3. Head into town for the Saturday morning street festival featuring pancake breakfast, yoga, farmers’ market and live music 4. Check out the expanded vendor village featuring market stalls, local artisans, sponsor and merchandise booths 5. Party into the night at the new “Woodshed” DJ zone And, if you’re feeling particularly energetic, get your Squamish adventure on — climb the Chief, kite board or relax by one of the many lakes and be back in time for the first show

SUMMER HOT TICKETS Barr Brothers brings sepia-toned Americana to Vancouver Folk Fest, July 13 to 15 at Jericho Beach By Shawn Conner

T

hough he’s been a musician for more than a decade, Brad Barr will be getting his first taste of the folk music festival circuit this year. That’s because his previous band, The Slip, was a more improvisational unit than his current outfit, the Barr Brothers. “We haven’t done a lot of festivals,” says Barr. “The one or two that we’ve done have been really good, though — lots of people in lawn chairs, and ladies who want to get up and dance with their husbands, who don’t necessarily want to dance.” Folk music fans will have a chance to get their groove on to the Barr Brothers’ sepia-toned Americana this summer at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival (July 13-15). It’s one of a number of festivals, both jazz and folk, the band will play this summer, partially as a result of a self-titled debut album that’s been gaining momentum since its release last year. The Rhode Island-raised Barr put the record together in Montreal, where he now lives, with his the rest of the Barr Brothers band: his brother, Andrew, along with Montreal musicians Sarah Page

outh Granville Street has proudly donned the title of “Gallery Row” since the sixties. Today, visitors from across the globe continue to flock here, taking in the greatest concentration of art and galleries that the city of Vancouver has to offer. That is why, this summer, the gallery owners on South Granville in conjunction with the South Granville Business Improvement Association are launching a Gallery Art Walk. On June 23, wander up and down South Granville Street and partake in artist talks, wine and cheese tastings, and attend over 15 different art exhibitions. With the diverse range of galleries on the row, there is truly a medium, style and artwork for everyone. It’s from 10am to 6pm. For details go to SouthGranville.

(harp) and Andres Vial (keyboards, bass, percussion). The songs have their roots in blues and folk; the lovely, delicate “Beggar in the Morning” and “Give the Devil Back His Heart” seem to belong to a predigital age. Besides the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, the Barr Brothers will also play the Starbelly Jam Music Festival in Nelson. He’s excited to go back – he used to date a girl from the Okanagan, says Barr, and they drove up to Nelson a couple of times. When he returns, it will be as a full-fledged folk musician. “That was really far off my radar,” says Barr. “I had friends who were folk musicians, and they were very different kinds of people. I’m happy about it, but it’s funny to be suddenly doing the folk circuit. I’d like to think this band brings a whole other angle to it.”

properly eliminate toxins. Herbs like dandelion root and milk thistle are also favored by the liver and can be taken in tea or capsule form. Onion, ginger and garlic all have great detoxification properties too so be sure to incorporate these daily! Sigh‌ ahhhhh. In Traditional Chinese medicine, a big, deep long sigh is said to help cleanse the liver by alleviating stress. The liver is a main organ responsible for storing our suppressed emotion (anger in particular.) Express emotion healthfully. Ever wondered where that emotion you’ve chosen to ignore or have yet to express goes? Any emotion you haven’t addressed has been sent to your liver for safe keeping until you’re ready to do so. This creates toxicity for the liver. Expressing your emotion in a healthy way is certainly a form of cleansing, mentally and physically. Clear your mind of stress by writing in a journal, scream into a pillow, write a message in a bottle‌ do whatever you gotta do. Eat simple meals. This will help reduce burden on the liver and on your digestion. Apple Cider Vinegar is an ancient trick used in several different remedies. Not only is it thermogenic (meaning it creates heat in the body to help boost metabolism), it lowers your blood pH and helps flush toxins from the body. It can be easily added to recipes or taken on it’s own (diluted with a bit of water) and in capsule form. Bring it, bifidobacterium. Yes, I am referring to probiotics. Your colon will very much appreciate a probiotic capsule on a daily basis to keep the good bacteria in balance and further assist the liver with detoxification. Liquid cholorophyll is a good blood cleanser and is just all around great for your health. If you’re not a fan of the refreshing but plant-like taste, add a squeeze of lemon for some extra flavor and detox support. Eat real food. Don’t eat anything that comes from a box or that you can’t pronounce. And certainly nothing that could be potentially passed on to your grandchild based on the expiration date. Avoid common allergens such as wheat, dairy and soy. A lot of us are sensitive to these and are completely unaware of it. Try eliminating these for 7-10 days and see how you feel. In the spirit of cleansing, it’s also best to limit or completely avoid sugar, alcohol and deep fried or fatty foods. Use unrefined organic coconut oil for cooking and in recipes. It has amazing antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and antiviral properties! It’s a stable oil so it can withstand higher cooking temperatures. Pure Light Laser How long have you had your business and why do you love it? I have had the business for over 4 years after working at one of the first laser clinics in Yaletown for nearly 11 years and I have 17 years experience in Skin Care, Scar Revision and Acne.

Studeo55: where style and fitness meet

I realized I truly needed to open up a place that was a reflection of who I am and my core values. For me it’s about authentic connection with each person that walks into my clinic. I wanted to create a place where you leave feeling better than when you arrived. I created a space where I honour my clients’ self worth and my main focus is to guide them to achieve their own goals and listen to their needs.

What types of treatments do you specialize in and why should people go to see you?

I specialize in scar revision and laser treatments. I was one of the first laser technicians in Vancouver and it takes experience to get the results clients are looking for. Picking the right laser and the right technician is crucial for your end results. I have been doing laser for 14 years and I am using a 5th generation medical laser made by Palomar. With the risk of scarring and ineffective treatments the safest route is to go to someone with experience. I am priced competitively, and with the added bonus of over 15 years in the industry, Pure Light Laser is a safe bet.

What so some of your clients say about you and your treatments? Christie Lohr, Fashion Expert for Local TV: “It was Rita’s warm and down to earth personality that first attracted me to Pure Light Laser. You feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door, never intimidated. Since visiting the clinic, I’ve noticed great results that have improved my skin’s tone, texture and overall appearance. People have started commenting on my skin. Whether I’m dolled up at an event, or sweating at the gym, it’s the same comment, “Wow, your skin looks great!”” Luna Ceovelli: “I am so grateful to Rita for the guidance and knowledge I received during my scar revision treatment. I have tried other treatments in the past without the level of success. Not only did she educate me on the entire process, but I also felt safe and confident in the treatment plan. The results are fantastic.”

Any words of wisdom? Or any new technology or service we should know about? People tend to put on moisturizer when their skin is dry but in retrospect they are not solving the core issue on why the dryness is there in the first place. I always educate clients on not using too much moisturizer because it will make your skin lazy in the long term and it is a band aid solution. The reason being is the best way to achieve the skin’s natural moisture and youthful glow is by stimulating and exfoliating the skin. For instance, people that use a lot of chap stick all the time time tend to become dependant. I am my clients’ personal skin trainer. I always try to guide a client to allow their skin to work out by adding, for instance, a Vitamin A or Vitamin C to stimulate the skin to start exfoliating and increase production of natural moisture and collagen. Our skin needs to be woken up and worked out just like our bodies and at times we forget this.

Catch Mario fever at Hastings Park When jockey Mario Gutierrez makes his Triple Crown bid on June 9, the crowds will be cheering him on By Emma O’Dea

M

ario Gutierrez, a former Hastings Park jockey, is on a oncein-a-lifetime championship ride. Having recently won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness aboard “I’ll Have Another”, on June 9, horse and jockey will have an opportunity to win the Triple Crown, horse racing’s most coveted prize in the Belmont Stakes. Gutierrez came to Vancouver from Mexico City as a 19-year-old with little money and speaking only Spanish. He quickly became the leading jockey at Exhibition Park and along the way met his mentor/trainer Glen Todd. Todd provided the diminutive jockey with the discipline and mentorship he needed first to be a success in Vancouver, then to move to California where he won the Santa Anita Derby and finally galloped onto the world stage by winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in May 2012.

After winning the Kentucky Derby, jockey Mario Gutierrez made a special effort to return to the racecourse that gave him his start. Hastings Park is hosting a special Belmont Stakes viewing party on June 9. Emma O’Dea photo WE caught up with Exhibition Park horse trainer Glenn Todd midmorning recently; he took time out of his busy day exercising and grooming his stable of thoroughbred race horses to talk about his earliest memories of Gutierrez. Todd says it didn’t take long for him to realize Mario was something

special. “The very first race I put him in he won. After I saw him ride for the first couple of times, I told him, ‘You’re way too good to be here.’” But what is it that sets Gutierrez apart from the other jockeys? “One thing I noticed are his hands. He has gifted hands. Let me

put it this way, he has the hands of an angel, and the patience of Job. The horses feel relaxed when they’re under him” Some high praise indeed. In 2006 Gutierrez claimed 15 victories for Todd, and in 2007, the number was over 50. Todd proceeded to sign Gutierrez to a contract.

Road to Gold...

Canada Cup 2012 June 18-23, 2012 Richmond Richmond Olympic Olympic Oval Oval

As their partnership grew stronger they began to develop a fatherson relationship. Once Gutierrez became more and more popular with his winnings, Todd’s fatherly instincts kicked in. “I noticed that like many successful athletes, he was in danger of going down the wrong path. He had a lot of money, and many new friends. That’s when I decided that he was going to move in with me.” Today, Todd says Gutierrez sees him as a second father. And Todd couldn’t be prouder of how Gutierrez has handled the media, and that he still remembers how he got to where he is today. Moments after Gutierrez and his horse won the Kentucky Derby, he told Todd repeatedly, “If I’m dreaming, don’t wake me up.” As for Vancouver’s historic Hastings Racetrack, Todd believes that Mario’s victories have already given the site a much needed boost. “Just wait till the big race at Belmont” he says with confidence. “The people will be gathering at Hastings. And he’ll be bringing them”. “We expect the largest turnout at our Hastings site in over 20 years to be with us for the Belmont,” says Raj Mutti, regional general manager, BC Racing. “We will be starting our live racing card at 12:50 p.m. on June 9 to accommodate the anticipated huge crowd.” Mutti has been in a buoyant mood with the live on-track wagering at Hastings up 24 per cent over last season. His Hastings management team will have secured more staff in all departments for Belmont Day, including the addition of food and beverage vendors. Advance wagering for the Belmont will be made available at Hastings on Friday, June 8. The long-awaited Belmont Stakes goes at approximately 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. Meanwhile, special edition of GO MARIO GO t-shirts that proved to be in such demand during Preakness Day are available at Hastings Racecourse for $20.

Free Will Astrology Rob Brezsny • Week of JUNE 7 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): If your destiny has gotten tweaked by bias or injustice, it's a good time to rebel. If you are being manipulated by people who care for you -- even if it's allegedly for your own good — you now have the insight and power necessary to wriggle free of the bind. If you have been confused by the mixed messages you're getting from your own unconscious mind, you should get to the bottom of the inner contradiction. And if you have been wavering in your commitment to your oaths, you'd better be intensely honest with yourself about why that's happening.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Diamonds are symbols of elegant beauty, which is why they're often used in jewelry. But 80 percent of the world's diamonds have a more utilitarian function. Because they're so hard and have such high thermal conductivity, they are used extensively as cutting, grinding, and polishing tools, and have several other industrial applications. Now let's apply this 20/80 proportion to you, Taurus. Of your talents and abilities, no more than 20 percent need be on display. The rest is consumed in the diligent detail work that goes on in the background — the cutting, grinding, and polishing you do to make yourself as valuable as a diamond. In the coming week, this will be a good meditation for you.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): The pain you will feel in the coming week will be in direct proportion to the love you suppress and withhold. So if you let your love flow as freely as a mountain spring in a rainstorm, you may not have to deal with any pain at all. What's that you say? You claim that being strategic about how you express your affection gives you strength and protection? Maybe that's true on other occasions, but it's not applicable now. "Unconditional" and "uninhibited" are your words of power. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): What actions best embody the virtue of courage? Fighting on the battlefield as a soldier? Speaking out against corruption and injustice? Climbing a treacherous peak or riding a raft through rough river water? Certainly all those qualify. But French architect Fernand Pouillon had another perspective. He said, "Courage lies in being oneself, in showing complete independence, in loving what one loves, in discovering the deep roots of one's feelings." That's exactly the nature of the bravery you are best able to draw on right now, Cancerian. So please do draw on it in abundance.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): In his book The Four Insights, author Alberto Villoldo tells the following story: "A traveler comes across two stonecutters. He asks the first, 'What are you doing?' and receives the reply, 'Squaring the stone.' He then walks over to the second stonecutter and asks, 'What are you doing?' and receives the reply, 'I am building a cathedral.' In other words, both men are performing the same task, but one of them is aware that he has the choice to be part of a greater dream." By my astrological reckoning, Leo, it's quite important for you to be like that second stonecutter in the months ahead. I suggest you start now to ensure that outcome.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Harpo Marx was part of the famous Marx Brothers comedy team that made 13 movies. He was known as the silent one. While in his character's persona, he never spoke, but only communicated through pantomime and by whistling, blowing a horn, or playing the harp. In real life, he could talk just fine. He traced the origin of his shtick to an early theatrical performance he had done. A review of the show said that he "performed beautiful pantomime which was ruined whenever he spoke." So in other words, Harpo's successful career was shaped in part by the inspiration he drew from a critic. I invite you to make a similar move, Virgo: Capitalize on some negative feedback or odd mirroring you've received. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): What is your relationship with cosmic jokes, Libra? Do you feel offended by the secrets they spill and the ignorance

they expose and the slightly embarrassing truths they compel you to acknowledge? Or are you a vivacious lover of life who welcomes the way cosmic jokes expand your mind and help you lose your excessive self-importance and show you possible solutions you haven't previously imagined? I hope you're in the latter category, because sometime in the near future, fate has arranged for you to be in the vicinity of a divine comedy routine. I'm not kidding when I tell you that the harder and more frequently you laugh, the more you'll learn.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): In addition to being an accomplished astrophysicist and philosopher, Arthur Eddington (1882-1944) possessed mad math skills. Legend has it that he was one of only three people on the planet who actually comprehended Einstein's Theory of Relativity. That's a small level of appreciation for such an important set of ideas, isn't it? On the other hand, most people I know would be happy if there were as many as three humans in the world who truly understood them. In accordance with the astrological omens, I suggest you make that one of your projects in the next 12 months: to do whatever you can to ensure there are at least three people who have a detailed comprehension of and appreciation for who you really are.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): Yesterday the sun was shining at the same time it was raining, and my mind turned to you. Today I felt a surge of tenderness for a friend who has been making me angry, and again I thought of you. Tomorrow maybe I will sing sad songs when I'm cheerful, and go for a long walk when I'm feeling profoundly lazy. Those events, too, would remind me of you. Why? Because you've been experimenting with the magic of contradictions lately. You've been mixing and matching with abandon, going up and down at the same time, and exploring the pleasures of changing your mind. I'm even tempted to speculate that you've been increasing your ability to abide with paradox. Keep up the good work. I'm sure it's a bit weird at times, but it'll ultimately make you even smarter than you already are.

On May 25, Ryan Holmes, CEO of HootSuite, right, met with iconic British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. Holmes' innovative Vancouverbased technology company is establishing its European headquarters in London. Do your tech company have what it takes to win three days of networking, mentorship and a bespoke business program in London's Tech City? UTKI.gov.uk.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): Be on the alert for valuable mistakes you could capitalize on. Keep scanning the peripheries for evidence that seems out of place; it might be useful. Do you see what I'm driving at, Capricorn? Accidental revelations could spark good ideas. Garbled communication might show you the way to desirable detours. Chance meetings might initiate conversations that will last a long time. Are you catching my drift? Follow any lead that seems witchy or itchy. Be ready to muscle your way in through doors that are suddenly open just a crack.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): An article in the Weekly World News reported on tourists who toast marshmallows while sitting on the rims of active volcanoes. As fun as this practice might be, however, it can expose those who do it to molten lava, suffocating ash, and showers of burning rocks. So I wouldn't recommend it to you, Aquarius. But I do encourage you to try some equally boisterous but less hazardous adventures. The coming months will be prime time for you to get highly imaginative in your approach to exploration, amusement, and pushing beyond your previous limits. Why not get started now?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): According to my reading of the astrological omens, you would be smart to get yourself a new fertility symbol. Not because I think you should encourage or seek out a literal pregnancy. Rather, I'd like to see you cultivate a more aggressively playful relationship with your creativity -- energize it on deep unconscious levels so it will spill out into your daily routine and tincture everything you do. If you suspect my proposal has some merit, be on the lookout for a talisman, totem, or toy that fecundates your imagination.

HOMEWORK: Upon waking up for the next seven mornings, sing a song that fills you with feisty hope. To report results, go to RealAstrology.com and click on "Email Rob."

SNOW PATROL Fallen Empires Rocking out in a stadium is actually harder than is seems... not ever band can hold the attention of an audience that large! UK Rockers Snow Patrol have been up to the task for a number of years now, and have definitely earned their place as one of the best arena rock bands going. Their songs are clever loaded with hooks, and have just enough instant awesomeness that they appeal to a wide range of curious listeners! Enjoy.

MOVIEREVIEWS

When horror is done elegantly, result is a viscerally stunning romp

Cronenberg’s critics miss the point of Cosmopolis advisors pass through his technology-laden limousine, Packer sees his unconsummated marriage crumble, his personal fortune evaporate (on account of failing to see the Yuan’s “tics and quirks”), and his life threatened by a disgruntled former employee (Paul Giamatti). Pattinson’s vacuousness and flat line-reading only heightens the detachment prevalent in Cronenberg’s work. In fact, there’s an artificiality to every aspect of Cosmopolis, be it the convoluted dialogue or the unconvincing glimpses of Manhattan offered by the limousine’s windows. Set in a near future afflicted by familiar ails, this should be a recognizable reality. Yet, Cronenberg has rendered it foreign and strange. Ultimately, we’re left as disconnected as Packer, a man for whom any attempt at normalcy seems patently absurd. In this sly piece of satire, Cronenberg has shown us how the other half — or, more precisely, the one per cent — experience life. — Curtis Woloschuk

COSMOPOLIS Starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti Directed by David Cronenberg With its Cannes Film Festival debut meeting with tepid response and its local press screening greeted by snickers and snide remarks, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis appears destined to be dismissed by some and derided by others. Alas, it seems that many reviewers are committing the very same mistake as the film’s central figure. To paraphrase: they’re looking for balance and order when they should be attuning themselves to tics and quirks. Marking Cronenberg’s first foray into screenwriting since 1999’s eXistenZ, this adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel revolves around Eric Packer (Twilight’s Robert Pattinson), a billionaire asset-manager. In search of a decent haircut, Packer embarks on a trek across Manhattan that’s slowed to a crawl by a presidential visit. As his wife, lover, physician, and key

Lord save us from Jesus Henry Christ Accordingly, when Henry searches for his biological father, he arrives on the doorstep of Michael Sheen’s milquetoast academic in record time. Trying to talk a good game about the virtues of being an outsider, Jesus Henry Christ continually stumbles over its words. Time and again, Lee’s bids at eccentricity – a recurring white character inexplicably jive-talks as if he were channelling Good Times-era Jimmie Walker – are simply asinine. Furthermore, such misguided humour only makes the eleventhhour bids for sincerity all the more risible. Perhaps most frustrating is how calculated and forced this all feels. Every laboured scene is practically sweat-drenched by the time it reaches the screen. And yet, all of that effort has been expended for nothing more than being weird for weird’s sake. Someone at the studio should’ve had the good sense to stuff this awkward coming-of-age tale into a locker. — Curtis Woloschuk

JESUS HENRY CHRIST Starring Toni Collette, Michael Sheen, Jason Spevack Directed by Dennis Lee Jesus Henry Christ puts itself behind the eight ball with a truly god-awful prologue that introduces us to Patricia (Toni Collette), a liberal-minded rabble-rouser whose life has repeatedly been touched by misfortune. As we watch a series of unlikely deaths claim her family — Dad tries to douse mom’s burning sleeve with booze! Immolation ensues! — the excruciatingly dimwitted stabs at dark comedy seem like a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Things improve little when writer-director Dennis Lee introduces Henry (Jason Spevack), Patricia’s 10-year-old son. Precocious enough to speak in complete sentences at nine months (cue some ill-conceived talking baby sequences), the child prodigy now completes university entrance exams in minutes.

Directed by Ridley Scott Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender Director Ridley Scott has always been ahead of the curve; his first two science fiction films, Alien and Blade Runner, opened with mixed reviews but were regarded as classics years later. It’s clear that Prometheus, the unofficial Alien prequel, will follow in these footsteps — it’s a film so ambitious in scope it may take time before audiences truly appreciate just what Scott has pulled Thor off. Diakow After discovering a clue to the origins of mankind, Noomi Rapace leads a team of explorers into space in search of our beginnings. She is formidable in the role, especially when things go haywire, but it’s Michael Fassbender who steals the show as the quintessential android David. There are strands of the Alien universe peppered throughout that will surely delight fanboys alike but this is clearly not a direct prequel to the 1979 original. The film is technically brilliant and enthralling right from the opening scene (see it in 3D). The genre rarely looks as elegant as it does in this film and once things morph into full blown horror the effect is often visceral. The plot of Prometheus is what will confuse and perhaps infuriate moviegoers. Admittedly, the story takes some bizarre twists and many things are left unanswered. The issue is whether elements are intentionally left out to encourage a sequel or to create dialogue about what it all means. Prometheus is not a perfect film but heralds the return of smart sci-fi and is never afraid to pose some far reaching questions.

A Father’s Day outing: Othello Tunnels inspire a manly “Whoa!”

FATHER'S DAY

By Kelsey Klassen

I

recently surprised my ami with a visit to the majestic Othello Tunnels just north of Hope. Only two hours drive from downtown Vancouver, it is a landmark with special significance to me and my family, having spent some formative years in the area. In the early 1900s, the Canadian Pacific Railway decided a route was necessary to link the Kootenay Region with the BC coast by rail. Thought impossible, it took the daring imagination of engineer Andrew McCullough, sparked while dangling in a basket on the side of a mountain, to envision a bridge and tunnel system that could conquer the raging Coquihalla Gorge. Tenuously threaded 300 feet above the canyon, a series of tunnels were blasted in 1914, sparing no expense. Linked by striking bridges, it was speculated that passenger trips occured after dark to hide the view of the terrifying mountain passage and the river below. The railway served the province until 1961, upon which time inclement conditions forced its closure. It was converted into a provincial park decades later, and when my ami stared up in awe at the sootcovered triple height rock walls, concrete formwork and steel reinforcements and declared, “Whoa! This is like heaven for a dude!” I decided to share my little secret as a suggestion for where to spend a day with Dad. There are spectacular natural viewing opportunities available on the flat 2.5 km walking trail (lined with interesting facts about the history of the project). The 156-hectare park highlights the Kettle

WANT When the rail line was first built, it was said that passenger trains travelled only in the darkness of night so passengers wouldn’t be frightened by the spectacular mountainside views. Kelsey Klassen photos Valley Railway grade that passes through the canyon and five interlinked tunnels, surrounded by pristine BC wilderness. While I like to think it’s my little secret, it sees thousands of visitors each year and the tunnels have become a favourite location for movie producers in recent years. Rambo: First Blood, Shoot to Kill, and The Adventures of Yellow Dog were all filmed in Coquihalla Canyon. Get on Highway #5, north of Hope and look for Exit 183.
