Identifying what has shaped Lake Country BOBBI-SUE MENARD Hidden and not so hidden secrets of the past were brought into focus at a Lake Country heritage workshop held late last month.

The goal of the May 26 workshop was to gather local knowledge about major factors and processes that influence the District of Lake Country’s heritage resources.

About 30 Lake Country area residents engaged with district staff to explore the roots of the community.

The purpose of focusing on historical and heritage ideas and resources is to decide on

what should be preserved going forward so the Lake Country of the future will have a firm grasp on its past.

Once key ideas and items have been identified, decisions can be made on how to best conserve places that the community identifies as embodying heritage values.

The Lake Country Museum plays a part in that process. Shannon Jorgenson, manager of the Lake Country Museum, said the mood in the room from all participants was very positive. “The Lake Country Museum is excited to be involved in the process of identifying Lake Coun-

try’s heritage values and resources. Kudos to the District of Lake Country for initiating this.

“Our heritage resources are the tangible elements of our community’s history and give us and future generations, a better understanding of the places and events that shape our community.”

The results of the workshop are expected to be reported by the Lake Country Heritage Society, with thematic maps of heritage places developed by participants in the workshop.

Recommendations will be presented to mayor and council at a strategy session at a later date.

Members of the community who were unable to attend the workshop will be able to share their knowledge and assist

in identifying pieces of Lake Country’s heritage at soon to be announced upcoming Front Porch meetings.

Heritage strolls If you are wondering about the heritage of Lake Country, the Lake Country Museum has two upcoming guided strolls to show you the heritage elements of the community. Everyone is welcome to join one or both of the events.

The June 9 stroll begins at 10 a.m. from the District of Lake Country Museum, 11255 Okanagan Centre Road West.

The tour will be of Okanagan Centre’s historic sites.This heritage walk promises to be an enjoyable exploration of the many elements you see day today in Okanagan Centre which have a rich history all their own.

The second stroll is the Winfield Heritage Walk on June 16, a tour of Winfield’s history with stories of founding pioneers.The meet-up place is the Cooper’s Shopping Centre in Winfield. Call the museum for a start time at 250-766-0111.

Both strolls are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of Lake Country and to meet people.The walks are free of charge although registration is required for planning purposes. Lake Country water ski and board programs compromised with theft BOBBI-SUE MENARD It was a brazen theft of an expensive and unwieldy piece of equipment.

The boat lift for the Lake Country Ski and Board Club was stolen from its storage location beside the club shack on the beach at the north end of Wood Lake.

The theft would have required the use of a flat deck trailer or larger covered trailer to accomplish as the aluminum boat lift weighs approximately 317 kg (700 lbs).

The lift went missing sometime between the afternoon of Wednesday, May 23, and Friday, May 25, at 2 p.m. That was the only window of op-

It would have taken at least two people or a solid winch to load the boat lift onto a trailer.

“We pull it out for winter so the ice won’t damage it. The lift was scheduled to go back in the water this week,” Killick said.

The theft is a real blow to the club. The lift offered secure storage for

the club’s tow boat when not in use during the ski season.

“This is terrible for us as a club. It means the boat will not be secure or protected from theft,” said Killick.

He is unsure of the next step to take as the club season is supposed to launch in two weeks.

Should the lift not be found and returned

to the club, fundraising for a new lift is daunting as a new lift is valued at about $8,000.

The solar powered hydraulic lift is a 2009 Basta brand.

The difficulties of storing the boat out of the water come into focus with upcoming summer camps and the constant movement of children through skiing and boarding programs.

“Camps are potentially threatened,” Killick explained. “We need to figure out somewhere to keep the boat safely.”

New group to smooth communications between developers and district A group has been formed to create better communications between local developers and the District of Lake Country Following the rollout of a recent Business Systems Review, the district is working to improve the development approvals process.

The municipality has experienced significant growth over the past few years, outpacing most local governments in the

province. Recent census figures reveal that Lake Country is the fastest growing community in the Central Okanagan, which is itself the fastest growing region in British Columbia.

Acknowledging the previous challenges that came with rapid growth, district staff are busy working to move beyond previous concerns about timelines and process efficiency.

“While no one wants

to be over-regulated,” said Mayor James Baker, “our goal is to create a development process that effectively balances community safety, environmental protection and community building, with an efficient and fair approvals process that promotes investment in our community”.

With this goal in mind, a new liaison group has been created, ensuring that direct

communication exists between developers building the community and the municipality.

Despite recent cuts to their workforce, district staff are instituting a file timeline process meant to ensuring that applicants are aware of their approvals date immediately upon application— a first in the region.

“We’re also excited to be working with council on improving the development permit pro-

cess, allowing for some fast tracking and greater permit exemptions,” said Mark Koch, director of planning and development.

“The improvement strategy has interestingly highlighted that most of the building and planning applications are processed within target timelines,” Koch said, “But we need to now focus on the files that drag out, thereby frustrating applicants”.

Chief administrative officer Alberto De Feo added: “While balancing all community interests is no easy task, our objective is to ensure that residents have access to a reasonable approvals process, and that all applications are processed in a way that is understandable, consistent and efficient.”

While all involved acknowledge that such improvement is an ongoing objective and

that it may not be possible to please all groups, Baker said Lake Country is proud to be engaging with residents, taking steps to welcome new investment and improve services for local tax payers.

“Beyond that, we are also working hard to ensure that new development helps the community keep up with our pressing infrastructure needs,” said the Lake Country mayor.

To the editor: With the recent opening of our new multimillion dollar, state-ofthe-art, tertiary care, UBC-affiliated teaching Kelowna General Hospital, it seems quite extraordinary that a retinal service is not offered to the residents of this community.

The general public’s concern and bewilderment at the lack of such a service has been well documented in recent letters to the editor and we do not feel it is necessary to repeat the cogent and compelling arguments already listed by these individuals.

As local physicians we feel it is important to show our strongest support for the early establishment of a retinal program in Kelowna. We feel that whatever the reasons given

Chaos reigns in British Columbia in wake of HST

T

he old saying goes that if you like sausages and laws, you shouldn’t watch either one being made.

The legislature’s sausage factory worked overtime to crank out a pile of legislative change before the government choked off debate and shut it down for the summer. This is after a dozen complicated bills were stuffed into the hopper in the final month.

For the first time in B.C. history, debate was carried on in three separate chambers to try to get through it all. It created a chaotic scene, with politicians and reporters dashing around trying to create the impression they were on top of it all.

The NDP opposition screamed bloody murder about this travesty, especially as the clock ran down last week and bills were assigned a token 30 or 45 minutes to meet the B.C. Liberal government’s arbitrary deadline.

Alas, what little time

Tom Fletcher was allowed for the opposition to question legislation was largely frittered away with the usual partisan sniping that substitutes for alternative ideas.

The good news is that this mad rush wasn’t a calculated scheme to ram through unpopular, unfair measures. Quite the contrary. The B.C. Liberal government’s back is to the wall, trying to do what the public and circumstances demand and save its own skin.

Here’s a partial list of the marching orders.

• Get rid of the harmonized sales tax and bring back a computer-

ized version of the old, inefficient provincial sales tax.

• Unclog the court system, which has become so constipated that a Stanley Cup riot fool can’t even plead guilty in a reasonable time.

• And, find a way to make our growing population of urban anarchists and assorted other deadbeats pay to ride transit.

The HST exercise continues to exact its cost. The unprecedented job of creating a modern system for the archaic sales tax was the main cause of the legislative logjam, tying up government lawyers and delaying drafting of

other bills. Small businesses that paid $3,000 to convert to HST get to pay another $3,000 to go back, and we had all better hope the new computer software works.

Speaking of computers, one of the laws passed amid the shouting is one that establishes an online system for disputing traffic tickets. Police will print out tickets from their cars instead of hand-writing them, and drivers will have an alternative way to argue about whether they really ran that red light.

Fighting a ticket in court now takes seven to 18 months, tying up judges, court registry staff and police. An administrative system won’t keep them all out of court, but the government hopes to reduce the average resolution time to 90 days and save $8 million a year or more.

A similar administrative system is being established for small civil claims and strata property disputes.

Some legislation is to

fix earlier screw-ups. A judge tossed out B.C.’s most heavy-handed administrative penalties for failing a roadside blood alcohol test, so the government brought in a new version that allows for another administrative appeal.

The mistake of making transit operate on a poorly policed “honour system” goes back to Social Credit days. There is finally a system to enforce collection of fines, on those rare occasions when someone is ticketed for taking a free ride.

Even with the lastminute rush, four bills couldn’t be rammed through. Since the legislature will almost certainly have to be recalled to impose a contract on teachers this fall, the government would do well to provide a couple of weeks for orderly debate at that time.

Comments by senior medical director Dr. M. Murray in local media seem to confirm that IHA’s major concern is that the cost/ benefit ratio is unfavourable. (That means financial cost exceeds patient benefit.) There’s a brief intimacy in shared glances D o you know the difference between a small town and a big city? No, it’s not the size of buildings or the traffic density. It’s certainly related to population, but there’s no clear line of distinction.

It’s in the eyes.

In a smaller community, you’re expected to meet another person’s eyes. In a larger community, you’re expected NOT to.

I was not aware of that distinction when my wife and I moved from Prince Rupert, a city of about 10,000 on the remote north coast of B.C., to Toronto, then hovering around three million.

I walked down the street towards the subway station, expecting to see people I knew. Indeed, I did—people

Jim Taylor who worked in the same building, people who ate with me in the company cafeteria, people who sent me inter-office memos.

But they didn’t see me.

They walked with their eyes focused straight ahead, and down. They never looked up.

It felt almost as if they didn’t want to see anyone they knew.

Perhaps it’s a function of crowding. When you

don’t feel crowded, you’re less defensive. As Sheila Heti noted in an article in Spacing magazine, “Privacy is so scarce in a city, it is gracious to look away.”

And less risky, too.

Meeting a stranger’s eyes on the subway could be considered harassment.

Meeting strangers’ eyes on downtown streets could seem like an invitation to ask for money, to solicit for sex, to beat you up.

Hockey players and chimpanzees apparently share a common trait— to look directly into another’s eyes is to challenge them to a fight.

Of course, the reverse is also true. Those who retire from a big city to a rural community sometimes feel as if they have no privacy left. People expect to discuss church business in the super-

market, politics at the soccer game, personal concerns at the council meeting.

“It is difficult to accept that we really are free,” Heti observed, “to look or not look as we choose, without affecting anyone for the better or worse.

It feels as though what it means to look at someone, and what it means to decide to not look, is as central an ethical dilemma as any; that the question of our responsibility to each other really comes down to how we interact with people we do not know.”

Interaction—that’s the crux. We humans seem naturally curious about faces. Long before conscious thought, babies stare into their parents’ eyes. When we take pictures, we include people’s faces. In the family portraits we hang on

our walls, eyes are always central.

But what are we looking for, when we meet another’s eyes?

Heti uses the word “communion”—not the formalized ritual of worship services, but the recognition of our common humanity.

So our eyes lock, if ever so briefly. We admit to each other that we have just shared an embarrassing moment, that we all stumble sometimes, that petty officials can lack empathy, that someone made a kind gesture.

Then the moment of intimacy passes, and we go back to guarding our separateness again.

It was an interesting week for Kelowna-Lake Country MP in Parliament As I write this column, it is 1 a.m. or so last Wednesday morning and my colleagues and I are gathering in the House of Commons preparing to vote on C-39, the back to work legislation that will get CP Rail moving again.

It’s been quite the week with some big wins and one particular disappointment.

First and foremost, my mind is on our veterans. I was reassured to see The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announce that the Government of Canada will not appeal the Federal Court’s May 1, 2012 decision regarding the offset of Pension Act disability benefits from the Service Income Security Insurance Plan (SISIP).

“The men and women who serve and sacrifice in Canada’s name need to know that their Government will stand behind them and provide the benefits they need when their service is complete,” said Minister MacKay. “I am pleased to announce our government will discontinue the offset for Long Term Disability benefits.”

‘‘ Ron Cannan Since 2006, the Government of Canada has put in place a wide range of programs and benefits to support ill and injured veterans, military personnel and their families.

These complement the Long Term Disability group insurance plan for Canadian Forces (CF) members that is administered under SISIP. This program has done a tremendous amount of good by giving veterans with a longterm disability a benefit equal to 75 per cent of their pre-release salary.

Secondly, with the help of my assistant Louise, I have been in discussion with Veterans Affairs to see if there is some way, despite the necessary cutbacks, to retain some local service for veterans here in Kelowna. I am confident that we will be able to come up with a better

Speaking of confidence, I was fairly confident that Bill C-311, an Act to amend the 1928 Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act, tabled by my colleague MP Dan Albas, was going to pass this week.

Based on my motion 601, C-311, will allow Canadians from out of province to buy wine directly from our local vintners in B.C. and other

provinces, a win-win for consumers and vintners alike.

Bill C-311 has had all party support from the get go, a testament to the common sense of the legislation and Dan’s hard work.

But, instead of popping a cork to celebrate the victory for consumers and our vintners, the NDP pulled the plug choosing that moment to refuse to allow the bill to complete third reading, the final stage a bill passes before it is sent to the Senate.

Sadly, the NDP have

just ended up hurting the industry, especially our smaller vintners, who were really looking forward to the bill’s passage.

There is a slim chance that something can be negotiated so that the bill can be put before the House again before it rises for the summer.

If not, the bill won’t pass until the fall. The decision rests in the hands of the Opposition.

All in all, it’s been an interesting week with a few wins and some setbacks.

Boating a prime concern for residents at inaugural front porch meeting BOBBI-SUE MENARD Lake Country Coun.

Owen Dickie followed through with his campaign promise to host a front porch meeting with his constituents.

About 35 people showed up to his event held at the Oyama Community Hall. One of the topics raised was the perception of boat overcrowding and moor-

age at the north end of Wood Lake. “People feel it is becoming unsafe to be on the water at the north end of Wood Lake,� says Dickie. “We have two official beaches and the entire area is used by residents and there are an awful lot of boats.�

Safety is the main concern says Dickie but establishing a realis-

tic and enforceable maximum number of boats on the lake is a problematic issue. The answer may lie in shoreline erosion rules.

Wood Lake is subject to speed limit buffers in the B.C. fishing guide.

Dickie says shoreline erosion is a real concern and by having people move more slowly close to shore will not only preserve shoreline, but hopefully improve safety.

After that idea, jurisdiction gets tricky, says

Dickie.

Wood Lake was once about four feet higher, but after the channel was dredged the water level in the lake dropped.

There is an argument that the lake has federal jurisdiction under the Navigable Waters Act. “Everything we try to do we are unsure if it is federal, provincial or regional district jurisdiction,� says Dickie.

Until the jurisdictional issues are resolved there are a limited number of

options for residents.

Part and parcel with the crowding and safety concerns about lake traffic are complaints about noise from boaters.

Ultimately it is the lack of moorage and the perceived lack of respect from boater for residents that had people really concerned, says Dickie. “A lot of these problems are quite new. We want to preserve recreation on the lake, but also keep it safe.�

Boating season means stay safe out there Boating season is upon us and the RCMP remind boaters to drive responsibly and stay safe on the water.

Before heading out onto any lake, ensure that all of the required equipment is available and in working order.

Most, if not all, boating collisions can be avoided. Some of the most common causes of boating collisions are: Careless or reckless operation—A person operating a vessel in a negligent or grossly negligent manner and/

or interfering with the safe operation of a vessel, so as to endanger the life, limb, or property of a person.

Excessive speed— Speed above that which a reasonable and prudent person would have operated under the circumstances that existed. It is not necessarily a travel in excess of the posted limit.

Lack of or improper boat lights—Insufficient and/or improper lights shown by a boat that indicate course, position, and occupation, such as

fishing or towing, for example: • No red, green, or white light • Navigation lights hidden or covered • Spot lights and/ or docking lights used by a boat operator that interfere with the visibility of the operator of another boat. Docking lights used as “headlightsâ€? while navigating at night, which is a very common occurrence on Okanagan lakes.

No proper lookout person—The failure of the operator to perceive

danger because no one was serving as lookout or the person so serving failed in that regard.

Operator inattention—Failure on the part of the operator to pay attention to the vessel, its occupants, or the environment in which the vessel is operating.

Operator inexperience—Lack of practical experience or knowledge in operating the boat involved in the accident.

Rules of the road infraction—Violation of the statutory or regulatory rules governing the

navigation of vessels, for example: equipment failure, auxiliary equipment failure, communications equipment failure, fire extinguisher not serviceable, sail dismasted, seat broken or loose, sound producing equipment failed, visual distress signals failed, machinery failure, electric system failure, engine failure, fuel system failure, shift failure, steering system failure, throttle failure, ventilation system failure which could result in death by carbon monoxide poisoning

In the Play Ball program operated out of the recreation department at the District of Lake Country, children and their parents have come together to create lifelong memories. The six-week season is wrapping up.

Those memories should be made available to the entire community said, leisure services coordinator Sheila Gunn.

She is hoping members of the community will volunteer and step forward to relaunch minor ball in Lake Country. “We had teams years ago when we were a smaller community. We can do it again if parents will volunteer to organize a league.�

Gunn will provide information, including field times and even equipment so long as parents and community members come together to launch and operate the program. “We have equipment, fields and kids. What we need are parents to take

The goal is an all in Lake Country league that has local kids on local teams, playing each other. “It is fun, local, minor softball. We need to get the little ones involved and playing in sport. “This is another option to get kids out and playing. That is what it is really about,� said Gunn.

Over our lifetime, this results in the gradual wear ‘n’ tear on the cartilage that surrounds the surfaces of the hip joint.

This is a normal process but in some people this wearing can occur at a faster rate either through a genetic predisposition, a tough work environment, obesity or a previous history of joint or bone injuries or disease.

Wear ‘n’ tear to the hip joint that results in pain and stiffness is termed osteoarthritis.

A healthy hip joint is one that is stable with balanced and smooth movements. This is achieved by strong, co-

ordinated and flexible muscles surrounding the joint.

If this can be maintained throughout life, then the rate of wear on the hip can be dramatically reduced.

However, a common pattern we see with osteoarthritis is pain and tightness of the muscles at the back of the hip due to overuse.

The muscles on the outside edge of the hip tend to be weak which results in pain and inflammation due to their inability to support the hip during regular daily activities.

The aim when treating an osteoarthritic hip is to stimulate joint nutrition and restore more appropriate muscle function.

Initially this may involve gentle movements and pain-free stretches of the joint and surrounding muscles to reduce spasm and pain, and restore balance to the joint.

Acupuncture or intramuscular stimulation with needles may also be effective at this stage. Once the pain and spasm has been re-

duced it is then crucial to begin strengthening the hip muscles with specific resistance exercises as well as pain-free walking, cycling or swimming programs.

Your doctor and physiotherapist are imw portant initially for a diagnosis, education and most importantly working towards the goal of setting you up with a routine of exercise that allows you to effectively manage yourself.

While professional attention is important for the most effective management initially, the best long term management for osteoarthritis is ultimately through you.

Good daily habits with a targeted exercise routine and a thorough understanding of what osteoarthritis is will go a long way in controlling and preventing the progression of the disease.

Statistics point to sad reality in Lake Country Stats Canada’s recently released report on the rates of domestic violence (2010) in Canada had sobering news for the Okanagan.

The region, including Lake Country finished third in the country for rates of domestic violence.

The Lake Country RCMP detachment responded to 31 spousal assaults and 19 domestic disputes in 2010.

Victim services are available to everyone who is a victim of violence in Lake Country.

Cory Berger is the manager of police services for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, victim services for Lake Country area covered by the RDCO. Regardless of the incident, victim services are available to residents on a consent basis, should the RCMP be involved in an incident.

We commonly see people in the clinic with complaints of morning or late afternoon stiffness and achy pain that increases at night.

Arthritic changes in the hip usually results in pain in the groin and buttock region that has gradually built up with no specific time of injury. Do you fit this description?

The ability to stand and walk on two feet gives us humans one of the most efficient ways of traveling out of any mammal on earth.

However, this genius is not without its side effects.

The hip joint is heavily used in daily life when we are walking, running, squatting, lifting, jumping and basically any other movement requiring the use of our legs.

Therefore, you can imagine the amount of pressure put on our hips with the weight of our torsos bearing down on

U-10 Pumas struggle with unfamiliar field conditions in game against Rutland Villains Following several weeks of good performances, the Pumas— under-10 boys from Lake Country soccer— were beaten by a very strong Rutland Villains team.

The Pumas could not adjust to a very small away field, with undersize goals while the Villains used their home field to full advantage.

The field was so short that goal kicks from one end were going over the end line at the opposite end.

The Pumas also struggled with the size and strength of their opponents and, despite minor injuries to Gabe Traass, Reuben Milne and Connor MacKay, all three played on.

Ethan Prentice played his first game in goal in the opening half and made several good saves.

Parker Thomas took the goalie duties for the second half and also played very bravely.

Jordan Barker, who regularly plays in goal, put in a solid perform-

ance in midfield.

When the chances did come for good shots at the goal, the Villains’ goalies, or their big defenders managed to block everything. The final score was 3-0, the first time the Pumas have not scored at least one goal in a game this season.

Another tough game lies ahead for the boys from Lake Country Youth Soccer Association as they host Kelowna at Beasley Park next Saturday.

Should the text sender be liable if recipient happens to be driving at the time?

D

avid Kubert, riding his motorcycle with his wife Linda as his passenger, sees the pickup truck driver steering with his elbows, his head down, immediately before the head-on crash.

The truck had drifted across the centre line.

The choice made by 18-year-old Kyle Best to text with his girlfriend while driving causes David and Linda to each lose a leg.

Kyle pleads guilty to distracted driving. He is ordered to speak to 14 high schools about the dangers of texting and driving and has to pay about $775 in fines.

As you would expect, Kyle also faces a civil case brought by David and Linda, who are seeking fair compensation for their losses arising from his careless choice.

What isn’t expected is that Kyle’s girlfriend, Shannon, is also included in that lawsuit.

Does it make sense that Kyle’s texting accomplice is included in the lawsuit? If Shannon knew that Kyle was driving during their texting exchange, isn’t she as re-

It was her texts that distracted him from the road.

This particular incident was a New Jersey case. Shannon’s lawyer applied to a New Jersey judge to dismiss the case against her client.

The application, heard last week Friday, was successful, as the judge ruled that it’s reasonable for text message senders to assume that recipients will behave responsibly.

That decision is being appealed.

Shannon had already given evidence under oath in a deposition that she didn’t know whether Kyle had been driving at the time of the text exchange.

I expect the decision would have been different if there had been proof that she had been aware.

The wheels of justice often move slowly, so I won’t hold my breath for the results of the appeal.

What I will do, though, if the right case comes across my desk, is pursue the same arguments here in British Columbia.

It makes sense to me that those knowingly contributing to a dangerous situation should be held accountable.

I would want there to be compelling proof the texting partner knew or ought to have known that the driver was actively engaging in the texting exchange while driving.

An example: A girlfriend having a continuous texting exchange with her boyfriend who she knows is driving on the Coquihalla Highway.

Proof would be easier with a cell phone conversation, than with a text.

With a conversation, you can tell from the vehicle noises and context of the discussion that the person you are

Make the choice to stop being an accomplice to distracted driving.

Refuse to participate in a texting exchange with someone you know or believe to be behind the wheel.

If a driver insists on chatting with you on a cell phone, require the driver to pull over before participating in the discussion.

Campaign to relocate food bank gets going BOBBI-SUE MENARD It is official: The campaign to raise funds for the New Home for Our Food Bank has kicked off.

The launch started with a personal cheque for $10,000 from MLA Norm Letnick. The Rotary Club of Lake Country is organizing the campaign, Letnick is also a Rotarian.

The Rotary Club of Lake Country is spearheading the drive to raise $750,000 that will be needed to complete the project. All donations are eligible for a tax receipt and members of the community and businesses will be able to donate cash, goods or services to help attain the goal of completing the building project.

Initial information meetings were held in mid-May to explore the possibility of relocating the food bank to a space

On June 16, Predator Ridge will host a grand opening of its new Kelly Deck designed show home.

Deck designed the interiors of a new variation of the popular Predator Ridge residential floor plan the ‘Ellison.’ The Ellison was redesigned by noted Aspen, Colorado firm, Poss Architecture. It is a double whammy of design flair that establishes Predator Ridge even more firmly on the design map in Western Canada.

The newly designed Ellison will have extensive indoor/outdoor living spaces and a kitchen featuring a substantial island. The home has been designed for easy one floor living, with a main floor master plus office, while the basement has extensive guest quarters and entertainment spaces.

Since the Marathon of Hope in 1980, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $600 million and has helped to reshape Canada and cancer research.

The foundation proudly donates 84 cents of every dollar donated to cancer research in Fox’s name. In order to continue doing so, volunteer run organizers are extremely important for their community’s involvement.

GranFondo needs volunteers GranFondo Canada, producers of epic participation cycling events, has announced the launch of their volunteer program for the second annual RBC GranFondo Kelowna.

Starting and finishing in downtown Kelowna, the 122 km mass participation cycling event follows a spectacular scenic course along Okanagan Lake to Vernon, returning through Lake Country to the finish at Waterfront Park.

The organizers are looking to build a dedicated and inspirational team of over 300 volunteers to help stage the

event’s various activities, which takes place from July 12 to 14.

GranFondo Canada is committed to creating sensational experiences for participants, volunteers and the surrounding communities that their events are hosted in.

Volunteers seek to inspire action, learn new skills and support the positive message of a stronger more resilient community through an increase in sports participation.

Men in Black 3 have gone all gray and dull MEN IN BLACK 3 (3D)

T

he theatre sure wasn’t packed for the 8 p.m. show on Saturday and it became quite clear, as the film unfolded, that the folks who weren’t there were the smart ones.

I’ve been a big fan of the MIB franchise so I was happy to be seeing this new one, however; it wasn’t long into the show before I realized that this wasn’t very funny and it was fairly one-dimensional even for a film about time travel and aliens.

With the 1969 arrest and incarceration of Boris, The Animal (an ugly and equally evil alien), in a specially built lunar prison, all seems quiet.

However, his prison break sets in motion

Susan Steen Behind the Screen a chain of events which will change the lives of the Men in Black, notably Agent K and Agent J. Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time to save Agent K and changes history while finding answers to his own past.

Will Smith as Agent J looks older than his 44 years and less in shape than we are used to seeing him. Tommy Lee Jones, now 64, is Agent

K and has been in all the Men in Black movies and many others, including No Country For Old Men. Josh Brolin plays Agent K as a young man, and he too was in No Country for Old Men and did a stellar job as George Bush in W. New to the series were Emma Thompson as Agent Q, the head of the team, Michael Stuhbarge as the alien, Griffin and who I thought was excellent and Jemaine Clement who wins the best make up award as Boris the Animal. This role as the uber- evil Boris is a big departure for Clement.

This show just did not have the flow, the comedy (although the bowling scene was funny) or the deft repartee that the former Men In Black shows had and though it was blessedly short, it is

not a must see.

Men In Black may do well in the long haul, but it cost $230 million to make and grossed $55 million on its first weekend—somewhat weak as movies go.

Not a lot of great lines, but my own personal favourite was: “I was an agent for three years before I realized that all models were aliens.�

You have to like that one.

Better summer movies are bound to impress us more, so save your money on this one and hope that better shows are on their way.

I give this two reels is that’s all it deserves.

SLOW DOWN – ROAD CONSTRUCTION During the month of June, road construction projects will continue.

Please plan your drive time and route accordingly.

Lodge Road A four-way stop will be instituted at the intersection of Lodge and Bottom Wood Lake Road immediately. Construction preparatory work from June 11 to July 2 will include relocation of fences, clearing, grubbing and grading along the sides of Lodge Road. Some intermittent lane closures along Lodge Road with minor delays can be expected.

Full road construction will start July 2 with Lodge Road being closed to through traffic for the duration of construction. Access for “local traffic” with addresses within the construction area will be provided. Project completion is anticipated for September 15.

Hwy 97 – Oceola Rd to Oyama Rd Random 5 minute delays will impact both north and south bound traffic lanes 9:00am-3:00pm Monday–Saturday for blasting operations on the new alignment above the existing Hwy 97. These temporary delays are required to ensure the safety of travelers and stakeholders.

Light refreshments will be served.

The meetings will be chaired by the Neighbourhood Constituency Councillor

The Plan will be driven by educational program requirements, community and enrolment demographics, school operating capacities, as well as the current condition of facilities.
