Message from the Mayor I know it is summertime in Chilliwack when our Cheam and Landing Leisure Centre Spray Parks turn their water on, when the neighborhood children can play street hockey until well past their bedtimes and when I seem to be waking up earlier than the birds for my daily morning walks. Whatever your family’s warm weather activities entail, make healthy and active habits an ongoing a part of your lives. The Chilliwack Leisure Guide offers a multitude of opportunities to be active and participate in our community, no matter your age, your time constraints or your financial situation. For example, the Active for Life, ‘Chilliwack Walks’ program requires only eight walks in eight weeks. You can participate on your own by walking around your neighborhood and even when you are on vacation. Or, walk with us in any or all of the eight walks around the community, sponsored by the Active for Life committee. This guide is the result of the partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No.33. Each contributor to the Summer Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of residents of our community. On behalf of Chilliwack Council, I encourage you to take advantage of all Chilliwack has to offer and make it a summer to remember. Sincerely,

Parks & Trails Top Five Dog Tips for Local Parks and Trails License Your Dog A license isn’t just a fashion accessory for your beloved pooch, it helps identify your dog if it gets lost. Leash Make sure your pet is under control. Whereas you may be comfortable around your pet, others may not be. An over excited or aggressive animal can increase others discomfort or fear. Unleash The City of Chilliwack has off-leash locations for your dog to run freely . They are: South Chilliwack – The former Canadian Forces Base at Nord Road North Chilliwack – Island 22 at Cartmell Road When visiting the off-leash areas please keep toys and snacks off site and remain on site with your pet at all times. Don’t forget to leash your pet on your way to or when leaving the off- leash area Pick-Up Remember to pick up anything your dog has left behind.

The Fraser River: Its Spirit and Place

For 10,000 years the Fraser River has pierced through the centre of our Province before reaching the Fraser Valley and a slow meandering journey to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its 8

life, the river offered food and material resources that enabled the Stó:lō, (the People of the River), to thrive and expand in a series of villages located along the river. The section that flows by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach. Here the river supports 30 species of fish, and provides rich habitats for resident and migrating birds and a host of mammal species. In the last century the river began to change. Flood control measures and developments have altered the landscape and are

Yarrow Community School The new Yarrow Community School is nearing completion with students scheduled to start in the facility in September of 2012. We are excited to experience all the facility has to offer after 2 years of planning and construction of this new school. The school is over 3000 square metres in size, and has wood and glass accents throughout the building, which accentuates the natural surrounding of our neighbourhood. The school was built with LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) concepts so that it will be an energy efficient facility with low impact on the environment. This includes geothermal heating and cooling, use of natural light, water efficient fixtures, building materials with low VOCs and landscaping that uses native, drought tolerant plant species. With this new school, there will be an expanded opportunity for our Community School programs. We will be making the transition to a Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), which will enhance the community use and enjoyment of our school. The school will have an additional 15% space devoted to community use, allowing for the expansion of local programming for all users, from toddlers to parents to seniors. This includes a large gymnasium, multi-purpose room with kitchen and meeting rooms, along with a daycare facility. This part of the school will have its own community entrance and will be coordinated by our Community School Coordinator, Mrs. Sally Lum. The school will also have a number of outdoor spaces, including

two basketball courts, tennis court, hockey court, undercover play area, rubberized play area at the front of the school and two playgrounds. Our Community School has always offered a variety of programs to meet the needs of our local community. This has included recreational programs such as soccer, softball, arts and crafts, cooking and science camps. We also

continue to offer our licensed childcare programs, including Puddle Jumpers daycare, Jelly Beans preschool program and before and afterschool childcare. Please stay tuned for more comprehensive offerings as we make our way into our new Community School in September. For any questions or program proposals, please contact Sally Lum at 604-823-0257.

TUB TO GO

Winter/Fall Mini Sessions:

FORGET ABOUT ROUGHING IT.

Consider bringing along a hot tub the next time you’re in the great outdoors, says Metro Vancouver Softub dealer Paul Block. His product isn’t inflatable; instead, he says, it’s 32 layers of heat bonded industrial foam covered in marine grade vinyl. He believes it’s better than a standard acrylic tub because it’s portable, more energy efficient, and doesn’t require a foundation to be built. It also uses standard 110V power, rather than needing installation of a 220V outlet. The Softub weighs 55 to 85 pounds, depending on the size purchased.

SESSION 1:

Sept. 10 - Oct. 31 SESSION 2:

Nov. 1 - Dec. 21 SESSION 3:

Jan. 7 - March 29

study hard & live easy There’s way more to UFV’s new Chilliwack campus than beautiful grounds and awesome architecture— and more to student life than studying. Garrison Village Retail Centre offers you a great local spot to hang out with friends. With cool places to connect like Waves Coffee House (with free wi-fi), Subway, the patio at Garrison Bistro or Maru Sushi, you won’t need to travel very far for a great meal or shopping experience. Within walking distance from UFV The Village also has a Coopers Foods, private liquor store, dollar store, dental clinic, running store, hair salon and tanning lounge. You can even live there: options for student accommodations include rental suites in the condos at Garrison Village and coach house or basement apartments in Garrison Crossing.
