›INBRIEF Two arrested after Tilbury break and enter Delta Police arrested two individuals after responding to an alarm call in Tilbury on Monday (May 28).

Upon arriving at the scene in the 7900 block of w Road, police located a vehicle parked at the front of the gates.

According to Delta Police, a 35-year-old female and a 45-year-old male were located and taken into custody without incident after a K9 search of the compound.

Police report that the same compound had been broken into the night before.

Charges of break and enter and possession of break-in instruments are pending.

Family Day costs businesses: MLA Vicki Huntington votes against a new statutory holiday in February CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER

elta South MLA Vicki Huntington was one of just three MLAs to vote against the creation of B.C.’s newest holiday, Family Day. Huntington stood up in the Legislature Tuesday morning (May 29) during the second reading of the Family Day Act and said the current economic climate does not warrant a new statutory holiday.

“When you tally the costs on small and medium-sized businesses, small businesses in particular, it’s incredibly costly,” she told the Leader from Victoria following the debate.

The B.C. government announced Monday that Family Day is scheduled for the second week of every February, starting on Feb. 11, 2013.

“We all enjoy an extra day for family and friends and just playing and sleeping in,” Huntington said. But she said that the holiday will cost small business $42 million annually. That breaks down to over $1,100 in salaries for the average small business, she said.

“That’s a hard hit for entrepreneurs that are struggling as it is. Margins are really thin.”

Huntington said businesses have had to spend approximately $3,000 transitioning

to the HST, and will soon have to spend another $3,000 to revert back to the GST/ PST system. Add to that three minimum wage increases in one year.

“All in all, what we’re doing is causing increasing burden on the small businessmen who, in my estimation, are the real entrepreneurs of this community,” she said.

Huntington said the holiday will cost the government $28 million annually—money that could go to other priorities.

Independent MLA for Cariboo North Bob Simpson and B.C. Conservative MLA for Abbotsford South John van Dongen also voted against the bill.

“John (van Dongen) and Bob Simpson and I all felt that economically it just wasn’t the right time and that it created an additional burden for small businessmen that we just didn’t have to impose on them right now,” Huntington said.

Delta Chamber of Commerce executive director Peter Roaf hasn’t yet surveyed the organization’s members to hear their take on the new holiday. But he said that, while it’s nice for everyone to have an extra day off, it can come at a cost to businesses.

“I don’t think anyone in principal would be opposed to having another holiday in the year,” he said. “But for a small business it can have an impact. And of course for a manufacturing company, losing that day of production can certainly have some

expense attached to it.”

For manufacturers that don’t shut down for the stat, there is the added cost of paying time-and-a-half wages, Roaf said.

“And then you add that up by the thousands of businesses it does have a significant impact.”

Meanwhile, the executive director of the Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen, Ana Arciniega, said she hasn’t heard any complaints from member businesses about the introduction of Family Day. “Besides a few exceptions that have fulltime employees, the great majority of small businesses, especially the retailers and the restaurants, coffee shops, most of them have part-time employees,” said Arciniega, explaining that lost wages wouldn’t be as big an issue for those businesses that employ part-time staff.

And businesses that decide to stay open and pay staff on Family Day might even see an increase in customers, especially with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Arciniega said.

“If you didn’t have time during your busy days to go buy something for Valentine’s, well that (Family Day) could be a day that you could go and shop.”

Arciniega said she thinks that many locals will likely welcome an extra day off during the wintery first quarter of the year. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

Rally for Fraser Delta A grassroots citizens group is organizing a rally in response to the industrialization of farmland and wildlife habitat in the Fraser River delta.

According to the website Stopthepave.org, the group plans to meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 at Magee Park in Ladner for a rally and march. The event follows a potluck fundraiser which was held on Saturday, May 26 in Ladner. Proceeds from beer and wine donations were to go towards funding a campaign to stop port expansion.

"Driven by Gateway and the South Fraser Perimeter Road, the industrialization of farmland and wildlife habitat in the Fraser Delta has reached a tipping point," states Stopthepave.org. The website lists the proposed Deltaport Terminal 2, a Free Trade Zone, YVR expansion and possible inland terminals among its concerns.

Impaired driving suspected Impaired driving charges are pending for a 39-year-old whose car ended up in the front yard of a home Saturday (May 26) in Tsawwassen.

According to Delta Police, the vehicle went off the road and through some shrubs in the area of Tsawwassen Drive and Eagle Way. When officers arrived on the scene they noticed the driver showed signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested and escorted to DPD headquarters where a driving suspension was issued.

Delta plans to move heritage structure to Kirkland House A historic barn in Ladner will soon find a new home on the Kirkland House property.

On Monday night (May 28), Delta council approved relocating the Harris Barn for preservation and restoration into a public amenity.

Located at 5561 64 St. the barn was originally constructed in the early 1900s and moved in 1940 to its current location. According to a staff report from Delta’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, the barn is considered to be of high heritage value, scoring 98/100 in the 1998 Heritage Inventory Evaluation.

The current owner, Fujiko Kinjo, recently applied for a demolition permit for the structure to make way for the construction of a new private residence and farm use building on the site. But, recognizing the significance of the barn as one of Delta’s “historical agricultural assets,” council asked municipal staff to investigate moving the building to Hawthorne Grove Park on Arthur Drive.

In exchange for the barn, Delta would give the owner 80 sheets of one-inch fir plywood, waive building permit fees related to construction of a new house, and provide water service to the property.

Meanwhile, the Kirkland House Foundation has agreed to partner with Delta to refurbish the barn once relocated.

Council has endorsed awarding a contract to Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. for the relocation of the Harris Barn structure in the amount of $362,240, including tax.

Funding for relocation is not included in the 2016 financial plan, but council has approved the expenditure of up to $600,000 for this project, to be drawn from the Parks and Public Land Reserve.

On Monday (May 28) Delta council approved a development permit application for the installation of telecommunications equipment on the rooftop of a Tsawwassen seniors’ residence.

Telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent plans to install three cellular antennas, three microwave dishes and an equipment cabinet on top of the Waterford building on 56 St. to increase wireless coverage for cellular phone service provider Wind Mobile.

According to a report by Delta’s Community Planning and Development Department, the proposal has been met with some public resistance.

A petition with 64 names has been submitted noting opposition to the telecommunications installations due to health and safety concerns.

In addition, Delta has received comments from 24 residents, 19 of whom expressed concerns primarily relating to health and safety.

Tsawwassen resident and spokesperson for MAPP (Mothers Against Power Poles) Heather Colls told the Leader she would be concerned if her parents were living at the Waterford.

“The EMF (electromagnetic field) is increasing all around us. We’ve got power lines around us,

we’ve got smart metres around us, we’ve got cell phones around us,” she said. “Research out there says that EMF is especially harmful to the elderly and to young people.”

If Alcatel-Lucent must erect cell phone antennas, Colls says she would prefer to see them installed along a highway, away from residential buildings.

Meanwhile, Alcatel-Lucent says the proposed installation will comply with Industry Canada health and safety requirements.

Rodney Vaughan, a professor in the School of Engineering Science at SFU, says there is “scant evidence” in scientific literature that points to explicit heath effects from cellular radiowaves.

“I have not seen convincing scientific evidence that a cell station is physically harmful to residents in this type of situation, at least purely from the emitted radiowaves,” he said.

The roof of the Waterford is already home to a Bell repeater.

When it comes to design, the equipment will be shrouded by fiberglass which will be painted to match the existing building. The installation will also be set back from the edge of the roof so it is not visible from ground level. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

“Any of the performers that we have come here really love it because the sound is really great, the technicians are really great—they get them set up with very little sweat—and the seating in the theatre is excellent.”

Campbell, a retired Richmond elementary school principal, has managed Genesis Theatre for three years.

He plays slide guitar, blues harmonica and provides vocals for local band Delta Highway and, during his principal days, he was always involved in school musicals. So, the transition to management at the Delta Secondary School theatre was a natural fit.

He says Live@5005 is quite different from what the theatre normally presents. In most cases, Campbell either rents out the venue to a group who handles their own marketing, or he pays an artist and produced the show himself.

Of course, Delta Secondary School gets daytime access to the theatre and holds its student productions there.

In any case, Genesis remains not-forprofit.

“So anything that we make goes back into the maintenance of the theatre.

And I think people would be quite surprised at what it takes to run a theatre,” Campbell says.

After the June 22 show, Live@5005 will take a break for summer, but the series is set to resume on the third Friday of every month starting in September.

“My dream would be to have lots of people come out on a Friday night just to be using the theatre. It’s a great theatre with great sound and a great staff, and we have really amazing performers very close by,” Campbell says.

or Steve Campbell, the recently launched Live@5005 performance series at Ladner’s Genesis Theatre creates a win-win situation for all parties involved.

“We’re providing a quality place for performers to perform and we’re also providing quality music for our patrons,” says the theatre manager.

Aptly named after the venue’s street address (5005 45th Ave.), Campbell says the new Christine monthly series Lyon also supports the theatre’s mission to promote the performing arts locally.

The series kicked off on May 25 with its inaugural show featuring jazz and R&B singer Sibel Thrasher and her band. Next in the lineup is country and bluegrass band Late Thaw, scheduled to take the stage June 22.

Since Campbell put out a call for talent, he says he’s received plenty of interest from Lower Mainland performers, many of whom regularly appear in legions and pubs.

“So it’s kind of a step up for them to be able to come and perform in a theatre where people are just sitting and listening,” he says.

At each show, the theatre provides sound and lighting service, front-ofhouse staff and ushers. The cover charge is $10 and, once costs are covered, any proceeds go back to the performer.

“If we can get out over 100 people to the theatre, then anything after that they (the performers) get to keep. So if we had a sell out they’d do really quite well,” Campbell says, noting Genesis

Delta Police will be investigating the death of a man after he was stopped by Princeton RCMP. On May 24, at about 2 p.m. a member of the Princeton RCMP stopped a speeding motorist on Highway 3, about 16 km from Princeton. The vehicle then took off, and was later found by the Mountie behind a Princeton hotel. The officer, who was joined by another RCMP member, got out of his car to hear a gunshot. The Mounties called for backup and found that the man had died in his vehicle.

There's no indication the RCMP members had fired their weapons.

A private groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tsawwassen First Nation land Thursday morning (May 24) to mark the beginning of the Tsawwassen Shores residential development.

Hosted by Aquilini Development and Construction Inc., the sod turning event kicked off the construction of two show homes and a sales centre, scheduled for completion in early September.

“This is one of the first projects post-treaty that is actually starting to develop,” said Melissa Howey, marketing co-ordinator at Aquilini Development.

“We wanted to mark the occasion.”

Howey said homes will go up for sale to the public in late September or early October.

DIRECTIONS Cook rice according to package and set aside to cool. Note: the rice takes upwards of 45 minutes to cook, so allow time.

Combine red onion, almonds, Craisins, olives, feta, peppers and tomatoes with cooled rice.

Whisk together orange and lemon juice, vinegar, honey, olive oil, salt, pepper and basil.

Combine rice mixture and the vinaigrette. Can be served immediately, but the flavours meld better after an overnight.

for (BC) Hydro to take down the massive 70-foot steel (power) pole that now resides in the parking lot of the high school.

At the time that MAPP (Mothers Against Power Poles) was voicing its concerns about the power lines running over the heads of our children, when challenged by MAPP, neither the Chairman of BC Hydro nor the school district would accept responsibility for the potential loss of life or damage to property in the event that the pole could come down in an earthquake.

Each was pointing the finger of responsibility to the other.

This information and letters from the BC Hydro Chairman/ school district was also supplied to Clark and Coleman during

the October meeting, with the message being, that if no one would accept responsibility, then the liability must then fall on the Liberal government who allowed this situation to happen in the first place.

Therefore, I would hope that the first seismic upgrade to occur at SDSS would be for this massive pole in our school parking lot to be removed.

Should I phone Clark and ask her this?

On top of this, Shona Shuter, a wonderful new owner, has taken over and is building an experience that will be unique in the west.

She has already brought in new services and products, and the liveliest atmosphere and personality that we will all enjoy.

I wanted to thank this community for being so good to me during the time I was here.

Give us all a break It's official.

Get ready to put your work tools down—be they a hammer, pen, or serving tray—and spend more time with your kin next February as the B.C. government announced Monday the latest statutory holiday, Family Day, is scheduled for the second week of the month.

In this case, Feb. 11 is the date.

It's also the date Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, fellow independent MLA Bob Simpson, and newly minted B.C. Tory John van Dongen say is too costly for the economy to bear.

They believe the government is wrong to offer the people something plenty of other parts of the country already enjoy—a much-needed break in a dreary and dark winter month.

Van Dongen says the holiday will not create a single new job.

Was it supposed to?

It will cost the business community in B.C. an estimated $62 million and place increased pressure on budgets—especially those running a small business they say.

Well, that's assuming everyone enjoying the break stays at home and asks meekly for another lump of coal for the fire.

But what do many of us do over a long weekend?

Those keen on hitting the malls will do just that—and plenty of retail operations will likely be more than willing to entice them to shop with some keen price promotions.

Some of us will dine out, ordering something sumptuous, and hopefully tipping well when good service is provided.

And some outdoor-minded folk may just want to get away from it all and head to the slopes of local hills.

All of that will add up to some economic activity.

But the biggest return from all of this isn't the money we spend on food, entertainment, consumer goods, or outdoor recreation. It's the theme of the holiday that should pay dividends here.

It will provide families stressed by the hectic pace of school, work and other activities the opportunity to spend some quality time with each other instead of trudging through the shortest month on the calendar with a longing eye towards the first other holiday at Easter.

No, British Columbians need a break. And one with family makes sense.

Getting unhooked

Young addicts recount their journeys to become clean and sober PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

T

he exit doors of the hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan swung open and the rush of sub zero winter air pouring into the building produced a chilling and defining moment for Susan.

Her drug dealer boyfriend was in police custody on counterfeiting charges.

She was a longtime addict.

And now, far from her home in Tsawwassen, the then 18-year-old had nowhere to go.

Her next step—embarking on the long road to getting clean and sober was the answer.

Susan, not her real name, like the others in this story who asked for anonymity, knew the only way to break the self-destructive cycle of addiction was to change her life completely.

Cast off the drug and alcohol use. Get back to her family. And create a purpose in life.

It's a fairly similar story for three other local 20-something addicts who have managed to make change for the better.

And with the grand opening of the rebuilt Little House Society facility on June 10 in Tsawwassen they are keen to tell how they got unhooked from addiction and traveled down the road to recovery.

The Little House Society is billed as a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing education related to substance use, abuse, and addiction, and abstinence-based recovery from addiction. Its building on 12th Ave. adjacent to Brandrith Park, a small residential structure, fell victim to arson in 2009, and with the community's assistance it has been reestablished.

The road to addiction The original Little House was a source of help during Susan's recovery, now 27, who moved to Tsawwassen from Coquitlam when she was 14. She had already experimented with drugs—marijuana—at the age of 12. And by the age of 15 was addicted to methamphetamines.

"To tell you the truth, I came here as a new person to the community and the group of friends who accepted me experimented with drugs," she says. "There isn't a lot for young people to do out here that's not sports. So, free time is spent experimenting with drugs."

At first she said she declined the invitations, but eventually gave in.

In Grade 11 she was kicked out of high school in Tsawwassen and sent to an alternate program. By the end of Grade 12 she was expelled from the alternate program. Delving deeper into the drug culture Susan started associating with criminals.

"It's just part of that world," Susan says.

"And I got in trouble with the law."

That was in Regina and the moment when

she knew things had to change.

For Henry, it started with drinking at the age of 15. It was a way for the Ladner resident to break down the barriers of insecurity to become the fun-loving, focus of attention person he desperately wanted to be.

"After my first time drinking I spent the night in the hospital," says Henry, now 21.

"I had to get my stomach pumped because I drank too much. And it went downhill from there."

As he got older Henry turned to harder drugs such as cocaine. In Grade 12 he became disconnected from family and friends in preference for those with whom he was using drugs.

"I've always had a fear of social situations,"

he says. "I've always been a nervous person and my way to deal with it was to take myself out of the equation and replace it with the effects of a drug like cocaine which I used to make myself the life of a party."

After a while that wasn't enough to break free from the shackles of his anxieties and Henry graduated to opiates and a preference for solitude.

"It was just me, my video games and my drugs," he says.

Not long after graduating from high school Henry left home for college on Vancouver Island at age 19. A change in geography was maybe a way out, he thought.

"I had a burst of motivation for the first month, then I crashed. I found a way to get drugs, drank by myself and stopped going to school altogether for two semesters," he says.

"I went farther and farther into the depths of addiction because I didn't have anyone to remind me where I was going. I was truly on my own. And once I was left to my own devices it was well and truly over."

But while he recognized the downward spiral, it took a bad experience while consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms to present Henry with a moment of clarity to fully understand the position he was in and to change the direction his life was heading.

"I suddenly saw I wasn't the grandiose, good looking, athletic guy I thought I was. It was all an illusion."

Henry came home with the intent to get clean, but experienced relapses that included cocaine use to get himself up for the sports team he belonged to. But when the drugs failed to deliver the desired results it took a

call from a close friend, Colin, a fellow addict and his former drug dealer in high school, to get him in a treatment program in New Westminster.

"I don't know what I was thinking walking up to the place, but it just felt right and was something I had to do," Henry says.

Seeing his friend Colin there, looking healthier than he'd seen him in years, inspired Henry to make the effort to stop using.

Colin, also 21, says he felt compelled to help Henry get clean. His story was similar to Henry's—drinking alcohol at an early age to heal the emptiness and sadness he felt inside. Then he graduated to increasingly more potent drugs—much of them pilfered from his family's medicine cabinet.

By the time he was in Grade 10 Colin was dealing drugs, and cocaine and oxycontin use was a regular habit. After completing Grade 12 Colin started using heroin on a daily basis.

Knowing he was going nowhere in life Colin attempted treatment for his addiction.

The first try failed. Colin returned home and promptly relapsed. That happened mainly because Colin says he never fully accepted he was an addict.

"I always told myself that I could drink on the weekends, and life would be good if I could only do the odd hit (drug use) here or there."

Going backwards Relapse for those in the 20-something demographic who move back to the family home is common, says Jim Stimson, president of the Little House Society who is working on bringing together those like Susan, Henry and Colin for regular support group meetings.

"The highest rate of relapse for young adults is when they return to live with one or both parents," Stimson says, "especially if the parents have not done any recovery themselves. Because the addiction compulsion is not gone. It's just been treated. So, what happens is that the illness is a living entity that doesn't want you to really quit. And that sets you up to create conflict. And there's no better place to create that conflict than in the home with those who you are closest to. And bingo, the relapses start happening.

"You gotta stay out of slippery places," Stimson said. "You don't want them (recovering addicts) in places where's there's constant chaos and disagreement."

Those parents who buy into the education side of addiction are more likely to have their children succeed in treatment, Stimson says.

Colin's family did and last month he celebrated his first anniversary of being clean.

It's been five years clean and sober for Jane.

Her journey through addiction started with struggling to gain acceptance in school, "and l was looking for a different way to cope than other people," says the 23-year-old single mom, adding the birth of her son is what made her change.

"I got into drug debts, health problems and was homeless, but none of that scared me or shocked my world. It was me being pregnant with my son that changed things. It changed my aspect on life."

Part of that was the challenge set out to her by a friend who said the best way to ensure she kept her child after he was born was to immediately go clean. And that meant throwing out her current supply of drugs.

"I really knew something was wrong with my life when I started crying over the fact of crushed (discarded) dope," she says laughing.

But she did it—went clean for a week. And that stretched to a month, then five months.

"I managed that because my son also filled something I'd been searching for," she says.

Lives with purpose Today, Susan, Henry, Colin and Jane have lives with a purpose—ones they believe other addicts can attain with the assistance of programs in facilities such as The Little House.

Susan completed a degree in criminology and aspires to be a probation officer. Henry and Colin have full-time jobs they enjoy. And Jane wants to help other addicts.

"When I decided to get clean not even a brick had been laid on the Little House Foundation. But I think with something like that

in the community there's no way of predicting what it's going to do, but the potential is there for lives to be saved and families to be happy," Colin says. "I never learned anything about what addiction was when I was young.

I learned that drugs were bad. But with this here there's the chance for people to understand what addiction means."

"Now that it's (The Little House) back in the community I think it will be well utilized because people will realize that it's a safe place to go to get the resources they need to help their own family," Jane says. editor@southdeltaleader.com

Eating too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and kidney disease, making sodium another important piece of the healthy eating puzzle.

“Healthy eating is a critical element in living a long and healthy life and avoiding cardiovascular disease,” says Gavin Arthur, vice-president of research and health promotion for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. “The Informed Dining program takes a positive step forward in providing people with information they can use in making informed choices while dining out.”

The program is voluntary, but the provincial government is encouraging every restaurant to join the initiative and make such information available.

“We want to be part of the solution in making healthy

choices, easy choices in B.C.,” says Vice-President of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association Mark von Schellwitz. “This program has the potential to help restaurant patrons become more conscious about what they are eating – it also shines a light on those establishments already providing menu nutrition content while encouraging other restaurants to follow suit.”

The provincial government has been working on this program since 2010, and has given restaurants several options for disclosing nutrition information, including a menu insert, a poster or a brochure.

“I am proud that we have about 300 outlets across the province signed up to participate in this important program,” says Ian Tostenson, CEO and president of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “I know that other business will continue to learn more about Informed Dining and sign up – this information is what our customers have been telling us they want, and it is our responsibility to provide it.”

The initiative is part of the Healthy Families BC campaign, created by the Province to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease. ‘Thoughtful livability’ at work When Panther Constructors decided to build their latest development in Chinatown, The Flats on Georgia, they ran into a few emotional obstacles.

“How do you build in a part of the city with so much history?” asks Panther Director Brian Low. “We have to do justice to the neighbourhood.”

“You have to carefully stitch a patch into the existing quilt,” says Scott Brown of Colliers International Residential Marketing.

The 28 one- and two-bedroom condominiums include nine-foot ceilings, and plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows that will allow natural light to pour in.

Outside, the building rises nine storeys from the street, and features contemporary Chinatown architecture like slotted shutters, Juliet balconies in some plans and ground level retail.

“The crux of the unit is ‘thoughtful livability,’” Low says. With open concept kitchens, polished concrete flooring throughout and custom millwork, it’s clear that no detail has been overlooked. “(We) spent a lot of time thinking (about) important details,” Low says.

“Personally, I haven’t lived in a place that feels more like a community ... It’s like a small town inside a big city.”

“To get that kind of pricing, you have to go out to the suburban areas. This area is going to take off,” he says.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Mine Manager at the Cox Quarry site in Abbotsford. Primary responsibilities include technical support to all staff regarding the mining plan, capital works projects and maintenance upgrades. In addition, you will be responsible for managing permitting and compliance issues as well as co-ordinating the work of consultants, surveyors and others engaged to assist with the administration of a large hard rock quarry.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an ability to work sell with others and have shown a practical approach to problem solving in the mining, construction aggregates or a related field for a minimum of ten years. Although not essential, a Professional Engineering or AScT designation is preferred but good interpersonal and presentation skills and proficiency in both written and verbal communication are essential.

Mainland Sand & Gravel offers a salary commensurate with experience, a company vehicle or vehicle allowance and a full benefits package including medical, dental and pension.
