Doors Open Surrey’s Doors Open takes place June 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Inspired by France’s La Journee Portes Ouvertes (Doors Open) launched in 1984, the concept has gone global. Based on a combination of selfguided tours and “be a tourist in your own town” concepts, Surrey’s Door Open aims to jog your memory about - or introduce you to - Surrey City Centre’s frequently forgotten family gems. With more than 30 venues participating, free maps and volunteers will direct you to park tours, many unique cultural landmarks, and the cool, newly re-designed Nature Centre. Doors Open Surrey City Centre Public Art Walking Loop combines local art, artists, new landscaping and architecture in city plazas, parks and walkways, profiling a revitalized, contemporary 21st-century city. Doors Open Geocaching is today’s take on yesterday’s “scavenger hunt.” Locate geocaches (hidden containers) using GPSenabled devices as part of a team, or on your own. Download

Surrey welcomes the 2012 BC Summer Games As host city for the four-day 2012 BC Summer Games, the City of Surrey proudly welcomes close to 3,000 high-profile athletes ready to compete in 21 diverse sporting events. From July 19-22, British Columbia’s rising athletic stars between the ages of nine and 18, together with their coaches and officials, will make Surrey home base. Baseball, basketball, field hockey, rugby, lacrosse, beach volleyball, synchronized swimming, wrestling and BMX cycling are part of an event roster expected to draw the crowds. Since its first hosting of the event in 1989, the City of Surrey has grown to include award-
winning facilities and support systems. High-caliber events, such as the BC Summer Games, are earning the city an enviable reputation with an extensive base of more than 3,000 dedicated volunteers. Surrey 2012 BC Summer Games could be the giant step inspiring many amateur athletes to make national and international stages their goals. For complete information go to www.bcgames.org

From its Bear Creek Park relay base, the Surrey International World Music Marathon is ready to run from Sept. 28 - 30. The goal of the Surrey International World Music Marathon Society is to deliver a world-class marathon promoting a healthy lifestyle of fitness, nutrition and fun. Race Director Tim Hopkins says, “We’re looking forward to a strong slate of elite runners who will strive for their best times ever as they attempt to set the inaugural course records.” “It is a wonderful opportunity for our new marathon to partner with a first-class international supplier like Adidas,” said Surrey Marathon Chair Elizabeth Model. “Our new partnership with the Surrey Marathon allows us to bring the best in Adidas performance products to B.C.’s fastest-growing city, and promotes the development of a new and exciting running event,” said Adidas Regional Sales Manager Jeff Simmonds.
Elizabeth Model is helping organize the Surrey International World Music Marathon. A two-person Half Marathon and four-person Full Marathon is included in a comprehensive list of events and categories. Century Group Kids Fun Run takes place Sept. 30, and the 5K Concert Run is on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Central City Plaza, which is also the start/finish location and host of the Weekend Expo.

DECEMBER 2012 Celebrating the winter season with songs, lights and a parade
DiscoverSURREY2012surreyleader.com • 37
Festivals are among the City of Surrey’s many strengths yearround. December, of course, means celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, winter escapes, and year-end family get-togethers. Step back to your pioneer roots at the Historic Stewart Farm. The old stove warms the kitchen. Biscuits are baking. Spiced apple juice is warming. The old Victorian house is decorated for Christmas. Look out for the mistletoe! The Surrey Museum always welcomes all ages with a variety of programs as long as Santa’s list, and up at Surrey City Centre, festivities are in full swing. Celebrate the big Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 1 in Central City Plaza. Getting to historic downtown Cloverdale well before 6 p.m. for Surrey’s Parade of Lights on Sunday, Dec. 2 is a family tradition. Cars, floats, children, horses and an impressive array of glittering Vancouver Island semi-trailer trucks join local big rigs to light up the season... and the Christmas tree. More than 18,000 visitors have made

Surrey’s nine public libraries are treasure troves of resources - on and off-line. New immigrants are often unaware that our library systems are free to the public. Even those of us used to the system may be surprised at how “with it” libraries have become. Students have quick access online to homework help or job and career search assistance through Teen Central on the Surrey Public Library website. Youth programs, volunteer opportunities, teen contests, and much more encourage Surrey’s
young people to effectively interact with library resources. Book clubs at various branches offer bookworms opportunities to discuss new books and make new friends. Masterfile Premier offers free access to online articles from magazines, newspapers and eBooks to coverage on virtually every subject of general interest. There’s also an image collection of over 502,000 photos, maps and flags as well as nearly 500 reference books.

And of course, whether you are new to the city or a current resident, there is also key information relative to the City of Surrey found in the Discover guide. This guide helps uncover the unique characteristics and flavours that define Surrey while showcasing the broad base of activities available for one and all to enjoy. We invite you to use the Discover Surrey guide to find events and attractions that match your interests and encourage you to take part in all the city has to offer. Always a lively hot spot for community events and celebrations, Surrey is the place to be. We certainly hope you enjoy the Discover Surrey guide, and further, invite you to help us improve the guide each and every year with the many activities that take place. That being said, please email us at discoversurrey@surreyleader.com if you have an event or activity you’d like featured in the 2013 edition to be published in June of next year. Along with the hard copy of the Discover guide at various locations throughout Surrey, you can also find the guide online at surreyleader.com. Check out our eEdition link at the top of our web page. Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair

Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair: May 17 - 20 Yeehaw! Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is one of those country legends that keeps on growing. Every Victoria Day long weekend, Surrey folks and tourists head to historic downtown Cloverdale for the Cloverdale Rodeo parade. In 2013, Surrey’s main western event celebrates its 67th birthday, with the exhibition component logging 124 years. Still one of Canada’s largest rodeos, the event attracts crowds to the infield and the fair, offering fun, music, rides and rodeo thrills for the whole family. Arts, crafts, agriculture and horticulture zones, petting zoos and midway rides offer something for everyone - and there’s Cowboy Church in the Stetson Bowl on Sunday morning. How’s that for an added blessing? This is more than just a rodeo, it’s an oldfashioned tradition. For full details, go to www. cloverdalerodeo.com or call 604-576-9461 | 604-592-6956

Emergency Patients Welcome Visiting the Dentist is not something you usually look forward to. That might change after you visit Dr. Dhanju and his staff at Newton Crossing Dental. From the time you walk in the door and are welcomed by the friendly receptionist you feel comfortable. The office is modern with a large screen TV and magazines in the waiting room for your enjoyment. While most dentists do a fairly good job at check up time Dr. Dhanju performs a very thorough examination. All areas of the mouth are carefully inspected for any suspicious or obvious areas of concern. The latest technology in dentistry is used to ensure proper identification and corrective procedures. While sitting in the dentist chair you can watch your favorite TV shows in total comfort. Dr. Dhanju goes the extra mile to ensure his patients are relaxed and comfortable during their visit. Whether you need dental implants, oral surgery, veneers, cleaning, whitening or any other procedure, Dr. Dhanju and his friendly staff will help you achieve the smile you want.
