Wheels are turning in the Fraser Valley, home to some spectacular riding trails for beginners and experienced mountain bikers alike.

Whether you prefer lung-bursting, high-intensity trails or pedalling leisurely through winding woodland, there is something for all tastes.

Sumas Mountain, located only 15 minutes from downtown Abbotsford, is an ideal destination for a full spectrum of trail options.

The mountain offers adrenalininducing downhill descents aptly named for the challenge they present.

Rock Diva and Devil’s Throat, fast tracks, tough gaps and jump spots with Time Killer and World Cup, or a more natural stretch of track for beginners, with Holiday Sauce.

A recent addition for new riders is the Squid Line, which is a five-kilometre trail that meanders through beautiful forest terrain.

There are lower and upper staging areas for riders to park, as well as maps and kiosks to provide additional information for your day’s adventure. Local bike shops can also provide trail tips and maps to the area.

Downes Bowl is a beginners trail in the heart of Abbotsford, near the AgRec Centre on 32470 Haida Dr., and provides a wide path with moderately steep sections and several bridges.

In addition, the Ag-Rec Centre hosts one of Canada’s premier indoor BMX facilities annually from November to February, and a world-class outdoor track is nearby at Exhibition Park.

Ex Park will host a Supercross World Cup event, Sept. 14-15, featuring the best female and male riders from around the world – many of whom will have competed the month prior at the Summer Olympics in London.

FISHING The combination of mountain-fed lakes and rivers, and the Valley’s spectacular scenery, makes this part of the world a favourite destination for fishermen. Check out these hot-spots in and around Abbotsford: Fraser River Located on Abbotsford’s northern border, it yields Steelhead and Chinook salmon and Sturgeon from July to October.

Mill Lake In the heart of Abbotsford, the lake is annually stocked with rainbow trout. It’s best to fish here in the spring and fall.

Sumas River Abbotsford’s Sumas River contains Coho from mid-September to December, along with Dolly Varden, Cutthroat, Steelhead and Sturgeon.

Vedder River The Vedder River in Chilliwack is a popular location for Coho from mid-September to December. From December to March it bears Steelhead, and from April to September you can reel in a few Whitefish.

Rolley Lake Near Mission, the lake is packed with Cutthroat

and Dolly Varden trout along with Brown Bullhead. It’s also frequently stocked with Rainbow Trout.

Stave Lake This Mission location offers Cutthroat, Rainbow, Kokanee and Dolly Varden trout.

Weaver Creek Located near Harrison Mills, the creek has Steelhead from December to March. The salmon spawning area is popular for viewing in October.

Morris Lake Also located in Harrison, the lake yields Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout in the spring and fall. Coho salmon can also be found in the fall.

Occasionally, Steelhead are caught in the winter.

DISCOVER THE TRAILS

Horn Creek Trail Length: 1.2 km This park offers a nature walk along a clean forest stream surrounded by large cedar trees. This multi-use gravel trail, with benches and bridges, offers a variety of bird life and a relaxation area in the city’s centre.

Discovery Trail Length: 10 km Discovery Trail is a paved, all-season corridor connecting the east and west end of Abbotsford. It’s surrounded by trees, scenic ponds and lush meadows.

It also offers great lookout spots.

Albert Dyck Trail Length: 1.6 km Located in Albert Dyck Memorial Park, this gravel trail wraps around the man-made lake in the park’s centre.

It’s the perfect place to watch wake-boarding, waterskiing, swimming and fishing that often takes place in the summer.

Stoney Creek Park Trail/Bateman Park Length: 1.2 km Take a relaxing walk along the trails and bridges which crisscross the stream throughout Bateman Park. The Stoney Creek Park Trail is a multi-use gravel trail that provides fall viewing of the west coast salmon migration and great bird watching.

Clearbrook Park to Downes Bowl Length: 0.6 km Being one of the more popular parks for walkers, joggers and bike riders, this is a great location to get out and enjoy a variety of trails. Take advantage of the open areas or venture into the wilderness trails – a destination for mountain bike enthusiasts.

Mill Lake Loop Trail Length: 2.2 km A great location if you want to get out for a stroll in a beautiful lakeside setting. This area offers benches, public washrooms, fishing, a playground, spray park, the MSA Museum and Kariton House Gallery.

Fishtrap Creek Park Length: North - 2.2 km South - 1.6 km While exploring the trails of Fishtrap Creek, you’ll enjoy the wetlands, native plants, and wildlife. The paved loop passes by fish habitats – including the endangered fish species, the Nooksack Dace.

Sumas Mountain Trail With two main hiking trails that range from moderate to difficult, Sumas Mountain is a hiker’s paradise. The trail to Chadsey Lake requires two hours, return, while the trail leading to a viewpoint that overlooks Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley is 45 minutes.

ADRENALIN RUSH There are plenty of activities in Abbotsford to get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping. Check out these awesome options, which range from daredevil to family fun.

Skydiving There’s nothing like free-falling with a view of the sprawling Fraser Valley, making Abbotsford a fantastic place to skydive. The Abbotsford Skydive Centre offers jumps and lessons for experienced jumpers and first-timers. Free-fall photography makes it even more memorable.

It’s open seven days a week from March to October.

Waterskiing and wakeboarding Albert Dyck Park on Walmsley Road is a hub for waterskiing and wakeboarding in the summer.

It was the water-ski and wakeboard venue for the 2009 World Police and Fire Games and has hosted the Western Waterski Championships numerous times as well as the National Waterski Championships. The watersports are spectator-only, although the lake is accessible for swimming.

Horseback riding Abbotsford has a long list of locations for equestrian enthusiasts to fulfill their love

INDOORS Skate On the ice, Abbotsford has several highquality facilities for hockey and other sports.

The twin-rinks facility, Centre Ice located at 3600 Townline Rd., has become the nerve centre of the hockey community.

MSA Arena, at 2323 Emerson St., is another popular location, seating 1,000 fans.

Abbotsford Recreation Centre boasts an Olympic-sized ice rink which is used for hockey, speed skating and the general public.

A second ice rink can be found at the Matsqui Recreation Centre. This rink is NHL-sized for the public to enjoy.

GET READY TO EXPERIENCE THE

EXCITEMENT The City of Abbotsford is home to a multipurpose establishment that showcases world class acts.

The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) has seen some huge performances since opening in May 2009.

Located at 33800 King Rd., near the University of the Fraser Valley, the facility has welcomed such big name acts as Kiss, Maroon 5, Train, and Motorhead, all in the past 12 months.

They join an impressive list of entertainers who have graced the stage including Toby Keith, Reba McEntire and Alan Jackson.

There are even more to come. This summer

the establishment will host American musician John Mellencamp, Elmo Makes Music, the first Abbotsford Angels lingerie football game, Cirque Du Soleil’s Quidam, the Broadway musical “A Chorus Line” and Celtic Thunder and John Fogerty.

The arena also welcomes fans to enjoy some fastpaced AHL hockey and cheer on the Abbotsford Heat, the farm team for the Calgary Flames. The team plays approximately 40 games a season in Abbotsford.

The Heat enjoyed a memorable 2011-12 season under new head coach Troy Ward. They won 42 games, setting a franchise record, and swept their first-round opponents, the Milwaukee Admirals,

in a best-of-five series to advance to the second round of the playoffs. The Heat have qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs twice in their three-year history and are building a tradition of winning.

The AESC holds just over 7,000 fans for a hockey game, while major entertainment events can seat up to 8,500.

“The AESC is an integral part of the community because it brings people here from the surrounding regions,” said AESC general manager Jason Blumenfeld.

“There is something here for everyone, whether you like Broadway, Christian rock, or hockey. The AESC stands to bring top-notch entertainment from around the world right to your hometown.”

THE REACH Since opening its doors in 2008, the Abbotsford Reach Gallery has been showcasing Canada’s rich cultural heritage through a variety of exhibitions.

Contributions from over 400 artists have been made from both inside and outside the community, allowing for 60 shows since 2008.

UNIVERSITY TOWN The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) remains committed to its students, and ensures more individual attention with smaller classroom sizes.

The university offers more than 100 fully accredited programs, including two master’s degrees, 15 bachelor’s degrees and more than a dozen trades and technology programs.

Playing in the 30-team American Hockey League, the top developmental hockey circuit in the world.

The vast majority of National Hockey League players – 84 per cent – have honed their skills in the AHL prior to moving up to the big show.

Abbotsford’s hockey team is affiliated with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. The parent club stocks the Heat with its top up-and-coming young prospects, and calls up players to the NHL throughout the season.

The Heat set a franchise record with 42 wins in 2011-12, and advanced to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

The Abbotsford Pilots are one of B.C.’s most successful junior B hockey franchises. The team has made it to the Pacific International Junior Hockey League finals seven of the past eight years, winning league titles in 2005 and 2007. Several Pilots alumni have advanced to the professional ranks, including David Van der Gulik (Colorado Avalanche) and Derek Grant (Ottawa Senators prospect).

AIRSHOW This August, the Abbotsford International Airshow will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, as one of the largest air shows in North America.

What began as a community fundraiser has grown to become Canada’s national air show and one of Abbotsford’s most exciting events.

If you haven’t spent a day with your family enjoying aerial routines and on-ground displays – this is the year to do it!

The air show offers world premiere aviation events including: spectacular aerobatics, intricate routines, death-defying formations and stunning parachute and pyrotechnic work.

This year, the US Air Force Thunderbirds and Canadian Forces Snowbirds will perform their amazing jet team formations.

Adding thunder to the sky are the CF-18 Hornet and F-16 Falcon, while Pete McLeod and the Red Eagles will stun audiences with their unique aerobatic performances.

Returning favourites, both in the air and on the ground, include a P-51 Mustang, A-1 Skyraider and routines by the USFA Heritage Flight and the US Navy Legacy Flight.

The Canadian Forces Parachute Team “The Skyhawks,” will begin the show by jumping from

a plane at 20,000 feet.

For on-ground entertainment, check out the jets and carriers on display, and visit the autograph booth for a chance to meet the performers. Exhibit booths will also feature information on the aviation community.

The 50th annual Abbotsford airshow takes place on August 10, 11 and 12 at the Abbotsford Airport, 30440 Liberator Ave. Gates are open 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The main flying program runs from 12:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Abbotsford Agrifair The Abbotsford Agrifair is better known around the Fraser Valley as “the best little country fair.”

The five-day event provides the community with family-friendly fun, and an assortment of displays, demonstrations and competitions for all ages.

Watch as professional cowboys and cowgirls from across North America compete in rodeo events such as bull riding, barrel racing and bareback riding.

Agrifair’s main stage will feature local and

regional talent ranging from a youth rock night to Sunday praise and worship.

Gates open Thursday, Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. On Friday through Monday, gates open at 10 a.m.

Admission ranges from $5-$10. There will be a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Indulge in traditional strawberry pancakes or strawberry shortcakes served over fiddling music or Korean drumming – and watch as local artists paint views of our quaint downtown.

From panning for gold to sampling wine, the festival has something for all ages.

Agrifair is located at: 32470 Haida Drive in Abbotsford.

The event will also feature live entertainment, including local singers and dancers.

BerryBeat Festival The 31st annual family-friendly Berrybeat Festival is returning to the streets of Historic Downtown Abbotsford this July.

The festival will take place on July 7, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and July 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Historic Downtown Abbotsford.
