Nineteen teaching positions are being cut in School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) but it isn’t yet known how many jobs in Creston Valley schools will be lost, board chair Mel Joy said last week.

“We are hoping the cuts will largely come through attrition,” she said.

Joy said the decision to cut positions, which are disproportionate to the estimated decline in enrolment of 90 students, is in response to an anticipated end to funding protection for districts with declining student populations.

“We have used that funding protection from the Ministry of Education each year to maintain our staffing levels above what our enrolment would dictate,” Joy said. “But we have been told that funding protection will end in 2014 and if we don’t start now we will be in trouble in two years. …

“The other impact in Creston is our decision to close the resource centre in Adam Robertson Elementary School, as well as the one in Nelson.

We are now in discussions about how best to keep those services.”

In Creston, the closure affects one CUPE position.

A total of four support positions in the district will be eliminated, but the board has yet to determine which positions will be affected.

“We are trying to make staffing decisions before September so employees aren’t kept waiting to the last minute to see if they have jobs and where, but it’s tough,” she said. “And this year all decisions are twice as hard because teachers and boards are really stressed by the lack of a working contract.”

Joy said a positive that is emerging from the budget process is that “student learning is at the forefront of all of our decision-making” and that budgeting decisions are made with specific goals in mind.

“For instance, we know that money put into early learning has many positive implications for the future, so the budget reflects the goals we have set.”

Similarly, “making sure that

our kids are fed” is a priority because hungry students don’t learn well, she said.

“I always try to stay positive,” Joy said. “I believe there have been some good things achieved in this budget.”

Creston Valley Teachers Association (CVTA) president Becky Blair said on Friday that not all cuts will come from attrition.

“It is our opinion that the district has balanced their budget by reducing staff disproportionately — and far more than the budget plan contemplated,” she told her members in a letter. “The board has allotted funding to many projects — including staff development, leadership training and an increase of two vice-principal positions.”

“At the last meeting three board members asked to delay the staffing reductions but were outvoted,” Blair said by telephone from Vancouver. “The reductions have a severe impact in the classroom on students.

“We were reassured that the cuts would be made through leaves and retirements — that didn’t happen. As a result, seven teachers are being transferred to different schools.”

Twelve teaching positions in the CVTA, comprising about 8.5 full-time equivalent positions from Yahk to Jewett (north of Kaslo), will be lost, she said, and 41 members will be impacted, Blair said.

“The board is balancing the budget by reducing teachers, while adding two vice-principal positions,” she said. “The result is ratio of 10 teachers to one manager in the district.

“We believe that services to students will be impacted. The process is shameful. It’s all about poor planning.”

She was derisive about superintendent of schools Jeff Jones’ focus on what he calls “a family of schools.”

“We are a dysfunctional family of schools,” the CVTA president said. “I don’t mean to imply that these (school board and senior staff) are wicked people — they just don’t have the money needed to run our district. We now have an entire generation of students who have gone to school with a lack of provincial funding and support.”

A new program sponsored by the BC Medical Association and the Ministry of Health is designed to help family physicians be better able to treat patients with depression or other mental health issues.

Creston’s Dr. Tara Guthrie has attended learning sessions on what the General Practice Services Committee calls the “mental health module of practice support”. And she has taken the tools and skills she learned and shared them with other family physicians in Creston, Cranbrook, Invermere and Fernie.

“This mental health module — Making it Real — makes sense to me as a physician, so it has been interesting to become a trainer so that I can pass on the information to my colleagues,” she said.

Guthrie went to Vancouver three times for “train the trainer” sessions.

“Stats in 2008 showed that of the 700,000 mental health services provided in B.C., 600,000 were delivered by general practitioners (GPs),” she said. “So we are doing the work, but the Medical Services Health Plan (MSHP) wasn’t structured to handle it. Under this system, GPs feel more comfortable.”

In addition to being supported by the MHSP fee structure, physicians like Guthrie are giving their colleagues a refresher course and the latest information about screening and treatment tools.

“Under this program, GPs are doing a lot more mental health screening,” she said.

“Fewer referrals are made to Mental Health and patients are dealt with in our offices. Our comfort level in these cases has increased dramatically.

“I have always believed in the connection between mental illness and physical illness. Now I am better equipped.”

Chronic pain, she said, is often the cause of depression.

“We concentrate so much on the physical,” she said. “But if

we recognize and treat depression, patients are much better able to cope with physical pain.

‘Holistic’ is a word you hear bandied around, but that really is what this approach is all about.”

Part of the Making it Real program involves a change in the medical billing system that allows GPs to bill MHSP for providing mental health services.

“Mental health treatment is getting much better — change is definitely in the wind,” Guthrie said. “Now we need to make mental illness not have the stigma that has been associated with it. Then people will be more likely to seek help.

“That’s one of the reasons I was so excited to become involved in this program.”

Making it Real enables general practitioners like Guthrie to screen their patients more thoroughly for mental illness and diagnose conditions that were previously more difficult to detect. The program also includes tools for organizing patient issues, a cognitive-behavioural skills program, and a patient self-management workbook One of Guthrie’s patients, Gwen Benty, says that she has benefited from the Making it Real approach.

“Tara has been our family doctor since we came to Creston,” Benty said. “A while ago I developed clinical anxiety and depression. I just started feeling overwhelmed and I wasn’t dealing with what I needed to deal with. I needed help.”

As a nurse, Benty said she was familiar with the symptoms she was experiencing, but getting help can be an embarrassing step for a health care professional. That’s where Guthrie came in.

“You need to have a level of trust when you have mental health issues,” Benty said. “I have that with Tara, but it was enhanced because she didn’t just automatically refer me to a specialist.

“When Tara prescribed medication I had to let go, resisting

the urge to look up the side effects. That’s a big step, because people with mental health problems can be ultra-paranoid, overthinking everything.”

Going for an appointment with Guthrie and learning that mental health diagnosis and treatment is now a part of her everyday practice was a big help, she said.

Benty’s mental health was affected by a physical condition.

“Any acute illness puts stress on one’s mental health,” she said. “Unfortunately, in this age of specialization, there have become fewer and fewer medical professionals who have a whole view of their patients.

And the waiting lists for specialists are huge.

“I went to Tara with what I thought was just a physical illness, but she understood that I had a huge component of anxiety that needed to be treated.

My physical problem turned out to be gallstones, but they were an incidental finding, and were not at all needing to be treated.

The real problem was my anxiety/depression, which was causing stomach problems — digestion problems and constipation. Once the anxiety/ depression was treated, the stomach problems went away and I still have my two gallstones.”

Benty said she advises anyone in a similar situation to make an appointment with a general practitioner.

“You are already probably so caught up in your situation that it is much easier to talk to someone that you already have a relationship with. You need to understand that there is help available and that you need to engage with a level of trust before you can move on.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help — you have to give yourself permission to trust.”

Having a physician who can diagnose and treat mental health issues can save time and reduce the added stress of being referred elsewhere.

“This is a good step for GPs,” Guthrie said. “I know it feels right for my own practice. I’m sure of that.”

RCMP calls include MVAs, lost pony, dogs

Creston RCMP responded to 72 calls for service from May 21-27, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan, the newly minted Creston Valley Thunder Cats president , said on Monday.

May 21 •A male reported to be causing a disturbance at a Seventh Avenue North residence left before police arrived.

•A Wynndel resident dialed 911 by accident

when he was attempting to program his phone to dial the number faster.

•Extensive damage was reported on a vehicle that collided with a deer on Highway 3A. Injuries to the deer were fatal.

•No injuries resulted when a vehicle went off the Highway 3 near Erickson Road and into a ditch.

•Police mediated a dispute between two females on Cory Road after responding to a call about an assault.

•A person reported to be missing in the Boswell area after leaving the Kootenanny music festival arrived home safely, having made a sixmile walk.

May 22 •When police investigated a complaint from Evans Road about a male revving his car, they learned he was doing mechanical work on the engine.

•Minor damage was sustained by a vehicle that collided with a deer on Highway 3.

•Vehicles parked in a Highway 3 yard had their windows smashed.

•A McDonald Street resident reported that a hoodie and identification cards were stolen from her unlocked car in the last two weeks.

•A complaint about threats being made came from Payne Road.

May 23 •A Cook Street resident reported seeing a suspicious vehicle several nights earlier, possibly connected with a string of break-ins last week.

•An abandoned vehicle was reported near Kitchener Bridge.

•Police are recommending criminal charges after arresting an adult female on Ninth Avenue South who is accused of making threats. She was released on conditions.

•When police investigated a second-hand report about harassing phone calls, the alleged victim claimed to know nothing about the problem. The person who made the report then also denied any knowledge.

May 24 •Police were unable to find any unusual noise when they responded to a noise complaint on 10th Avenue South.

•A complaint about excessive noise on Hillside Street was referred to the town bylaw department.

•A youth who ran out onto Pine Street and was struck by a slow moving vehicle was determined not to have been injured.

•The driver of a slow moving vehicle on Highway 21 who sped up and tailgated a vehicle that passed him was issued a verbal warning about his behavior.

Creston native Colby Livingstone has signed on to play with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats for the 2012-2013 season, head coach and general manager Brent Heaven has announced.

“Colby is a very skilled, energetic hockey player that will fit very well with the high tempo style the Thunder Cats love to play,” said Heaven. “Colby has many high level hockey experiences that will benefit him greatly in his next step up the hockey ladder.”

Livingstone, who has been playing hockey since he was five, played minor hockey in Creston, then played in Cranbrook for two years, and was most recently on Creston’s midget team.

“The entire organization is very excited to have the opportunity to work with Colby and help a great local Creston talent reach his ultimate goals in hockey, education and life,” said Heaven, who will leave the Thunder Cats to coach the BC Hockey League’s Trail Smoke Eaters next season.

The new recruit to the Thunder Cats is looking forward to joining the team.

“It’s a good feeling,” the 16-year-old said. “It’s a good organization to be in.”

I was sitting at home in my favourite spot, on a leather couch in our solarium, laptop computer at hand and radio playing in the background. Suddenly, I thought I felt a draft. I got up and checked the many windows in the room, then the doors in the house. Nothing.

Another draft pushed me to get up and see if there was a slit in the couch’s leather through which air passed when I shifted in my seat. Nope.

Then it hit me. CBC Radio was playing on the stereo and I had been focusing only about half my attention on the interview of federal Human Resources Minister Diane Finley. She was explaining changes to Employment Insurance (EI) that are targeting frequent users, who often happen to be people who harvest food, which tends not to be a year-round activity.

These aren’t changes, she insisted. They are clarifications. This was a response to a broad consultation across the country, she said.

Business told the government that frequent EI recipients should be available to work, even if they have to move and work for lower wages than they earn where they were living. Oh, and she added, as though someone had hit her with a cattle prod, we consulted with workers, too. Yeah, I’m sure, I thought. Then Finley launched into an explanation about how the “clarification� of EI eligibility would allow the government to enforce the requirements on a “regional basis�, and utterly failed to explain how exactly that might work.

I had discovered the source of the breeze that had been puzzling me. Diane Finley was blowing smoke up my butt. My anxiety started to ease, knowing that she is

Traffic made street unsafe for children

To the Editor: This year, I went to the Creston Lions Club’s children’s parade on May 21, and as much as I appreciate all the hard work that goes into putting on this event, I have to take issue with a strong safety concern.

All previous years, the road between CIBC and 10th Avenue was blocked off to traffic for the parade. This year, the road was not blocked off and traffic was still allowed to drive on Canyon Street during the parade.

During the start of the parade, eastbound traffic was stopped on the road with many cars parked on the side and many stopped in the lane of traffic until the children had come out of the parking lot behind the bank onto Canyon Street. It was then allowed to continue while the children were going west down one lane on Canyon Street.

As far as I am concerned, this is not safe. You have miniature horses pulling a cart, dogs, young children riding bikes, scooters, some walking by themselves and some with parents — with moving traffic on one side.

I would like to know why this happened and to make sure that it does not happen again. The children’s parade is something that is always fun for the

kids to do, and for parents, grandparents and those who enjoy seeing children have a good time, and I hate to see it made unsafe. I really do appreciate all the hard work that the Lions club does to promote and have this event every year, and I would like to see it continue, but in a safer manner, with the road blocked off to traffic for the parade as before.

MP should bring civility to Parliament To the Editor: (Open letter to Kootenay-Columbia member of Parliament David Wilks) Thank you for your letter appealing to me to show my patriotism by displaying our beautiful Canadian flag.

Please be advised that I have always and especially on Canada Day displayed our flag. I have done this symbolic gesture not because some politician told me to but out of love for my Canada. It is well known that Canadians are not known to be flagwaving phony citizens but people who make up this wonderful mosaic of people from every part of the globe to share the best country in the world with the native Canadians, the origi-

nal owners, and they all love their country.

I suggest to you that instead of appealing to how we should behave, I would rather like to receive a report from you informing us, your constituents, about how you present our interests in Ottawa. After all, we are paying you well and also looking after your expenses. I would like you to help bring more civility to Parliament, and help to stop our prime minister from attacking democracy and attacking nature. Please make it clear to him that we only have one Earth and that it is sinful to destroy it for the sake of making corporations richer.

I firmly believe that we have many more ways to build better communities, a better Canada and, above all, a cleaner, sustainable Earth besides waving the flag. The many people of the Creston Valley and all over Canada are doing just that and are often filling in where governments fail us.

Yes, Mr. Wilks, I will celebrate Canada Day in my own way and also will display our great flag as I have always done. Residents should object to Jumbo I live not in myself, but I become Portion of that around me; and to me High mountains are a feeling…

So wrote the poet Lord Byron decades ago.

It is a feeling that persists today in the hearts and minds of many of us, one that must have been sharpened among those who attended Wildsight’s slide presentation by Patrick Morrow and his wife Baiba Auders here on May 1.

For we who live in this part of British Columbia — indeed, in almost any southern part of the province — it may be a feeling that we take for granted most of the time. High mountains are a part of who we are. They are always there. They surround us.

They are not unlike the walls of our houses. They hold these particular parts of our globe together, while at the same time dividing them into separate liveable areas.

Yet, as Byron says, high mountains have more than just practical value. For some First Nations people, parts of them, at least, are of spiritual — that is, religious — importance. For many of the rest of us, they are of spiritual value in another sense: they uplift us, conferring at once a sense of security and an opportunity to enjoy their particular,

many faceted, kind of beauty.

It is in this context, I suggest, that we should consider the proposal to develop the Jumbo glacier area as a ski resort.

Certainly there are many practical objections to this development. It will jeopardize the survival of the grizzly

bears and other wildlife that inhabit the area. The roads needed for access to the resort will scar the mountainside. It will benefit mainly a relatively small number of very rich people, many of them from abroad, while presenting unwanted competition for existing ski resorts nearby. A majority of those living in the municipal district have voiced opposition to the project. And the list goes on.

But those — human and otherwise — who live in the vicinity are not the only ones with a stake in this matter. To misquote an even earlier poet, John Donne, no mountain is an island. Jumbo

is a part of all who inhabit a vast area surrounding it, even if most of them never see it, let alone climb it.

It is a symbol of that feeling Byron felt. And for that reason, above all, it must be preserved in its pristine state.

We cannot go on hacking away at our precious mountains. We must take a stand somewhere, insisting that enough is enough. And Jumbo, because of its uniqueness, because of its special beauty and because of the crass shallowness of the case for desecrating it, is an ideal place to take that stand.

Until recently, the political powers that be have implicitly recognized that there is no justification for allowing development on Jumbo. Now they have changed their position for reasons that we can only guess — but certainly for none that reflect credit on them.

They need to be reminded, forcefully, that Jumbo is special in its own right and, symbolically, that is an intrinsic example of our feeling for our mountains. So, even if we do not live below or close to Jumbo’s slopes, let us flood the politicians who would tarnish this gem with letters expressing our disappointment with and disapproval of the “unfeeling” course they have chosen.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Kingsvale-Oliver Natural Gas Pipeline Reinforcement Project Open House and Invitation to Comment FortisBC (Proponent) is proposing the Kingsvale-Oliver Natural Gas Pipeline Reinforcement Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project consists of looping the existing FortisBC pipeline system between Kingsvale and Oliver, by installing a second pipeline approximately 161 km in length and building new compression facilities at Kingsvale, Trail and Yahk.

There are 30 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the draft Application Information Requirements. The comment period will begin on May 30, 2012 and end on June 28, 2012. CLES student posters address litter problem CANYON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Recently, a subcommittee of the Canyon Community Association formed to address the increasing amount of litter and vandalism in Canyon. Of most concern is the continual dumping of garbage, appliances and animal carcasses in the areas near the bridge and Whimster Road.

The Town of Creston’s success with its Community Pride program inspired the subcommittee to take action to bring awareness to residents in Canyon. Meetings have been held to try to find a way to reduce the litter and find out who is responsible.

As part of the campaign a competition has been offered to CanyonLister Elementary School students,

who have created posters aimed at reducing litter and vandalism. The committee offered a first prize of $25, and each child who created a poster will receive a coupon from Dairy Queen for a treat, thanks to owner Mike Vigna.

The school’s theme for the month of May is “community”, according to principal David Falconer. Thirty posters have been entered in the competition, showing how much the students care about their community.

For the week of June 4-9, the posters will be on display in the window of Creston Card and Stationery. Thanks to the donation of laminating sleeves from owner Mike Poznikoff, many of those can be posted outdoors in Canyon to remind residents that their actions affect us all.

Animal Nation formed in 2004 after a heated argument between the two not-then members over the quality of another band’s performance.

“The members of Animal Nation are hesitant to call their music ‘hiphop’ because a lot of hip-hop sucks,” said the band’s press information.

“The members of Animal Nation think this is unfortunate because they really, really love good hiphop, but know that the general population thinks that hip-hop sucks as well.

“Animal Nation is the greatest band you will ever hear. After listening to Animal Nation it will henceforth be impossible to appreciate any other sort of music that is not Animal Nation.”

The band’s style is laid-back, West Coast indie hip-hop and members find that it places well with fans of hip-hop, indie rock, folk or even punk.

“Basically, we’re a really, really interactive, fun-for-all-genre-lovers

group that will absolutely have the crowd smiling and having a great time,” said band member Garnet Clare. “We’re also doing things with our live show that hip-hop has never seen before.”

The band found Canada-wide exposure by both being cast in supporting roles in MTV’s Peak Season, as well as licensing several of its songs to the show. The show later went on to be picked up by VH1 in the U.S. as well as airing on MTV networks in 145 countries worldwide, and is being re-aired right now across Canada and the States.

Animal Nation has opened for the likes of Classified, Jully Black, Zion I, Hilltop Hoods, Sweatshop Union, Blackalicious and Buck 65, and has performed at several major festivals, including the 2010 Winter Olympics (official village main stage), Telus, Crankworx, Pemberton Music Festival, Shambala and Canada Day on Parliament Hill.

Doors to the May 31 concert open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, or $12 at the door.

Meals on Wheels, Tuck Shop volunteers honoured CRESTON VALLEY HOSPITAL The Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop and Meals on Wheels volunteers were recently recognized at a tea in their honor.

There are approximately 14 regular volunteers that work in the Tuck Shop at the Creston Valley Hospital, with another 28 that provide support by being a spare, by knitting, sewing, crafting and working the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. Last year they donated approximately

$19,000 to the hospital for equipment.

Administration, physicians, nursing and all hospital staff, as well as patients, recognize their wonderful efforts and appreciate the time they volunteer as a gift to the hospital and community.

The Meals on Wheels drivers deliver healthy meals prepared at the hospital to clients in need of the service three times a week. There are approximately seven drivers that support this service on a regular basis, often through challenging weather and road conditions.

PASSING THE MEDAL — Heather Dugdale, who has Huntington’s disease and is

a member of the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program, was thrilled when Alex Nilsson recently gave her his replica medal and jacket from the Rick Hansen Relay. Nilsson was the first medal bearer when the relay arrived in Creston on April 18, the 238th day of its cross-country route that celebrated the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion world tour. He was one of 13 who carried the official medal into and out of Creston.

Mountain Grana is a hard cheese modeled after an Italian Piave with a dense grainy texture and a sweet flavour, with hints of nuts and fruit.

With extra aging, a full-bodied flavour develops, resembling a young parmigiano reggiano.

It isn’t surprising that a family devoted to organic practices is also committed to environmental sustainability. Fresh milk is transferred directly from the milk house to the cheesemaking vat in gravity fed pipes. Solar panels provide energy to heat 70 per cent of the plant’s water. A geothermal cooling system keeps the aging caves at the appropriate temperature and the water used eventually makes its way to the pasture irrigation system.

“Our cheese-making ‘mistakes’ end up as feed for very happy pigs,” Ben-Rabha says.

Last week, while Ben-Rabha sat in her “office”, a desk in the from-

agerie’s sales area, fielding telephone calls, doing bookwork and serving customers, she described the family members’ duties.

“Wayne does everything — he’s amazing. He looks after crops, oversees herd health, does construction, marketing and financial work.

“Denise does everything, too.

She does some of the milking, most of the cheesmaking and making sure we’re supported by feeding most of us — especially at lunch.

“Erin is a farm girl extraordinaire. She does about a quarter of the milking, looks after herd health and breeding, and manages crops and pastures.

“Foster came back in November.

He’s really talented with construction so he helped build Erin’s house and is now working on the new milk bottling and butter making building. He also does chores.”

Goldie was a very loving and caring mother who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Marjorie (Marj) Hall

January 16, 1917 ~ March 23, 2012 Marj Hall, formerly of Erickson, BC, passed away at the North Okanagan Hospice House in Vernon, BC at the age of 95 from complications due to a fall.

Marj is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Margo (Gerald) Altwasser of Lumby, BC and Jacqueline (Steve) Truch of Calgary, AB; ď&#x192;&#x17E;ve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Marj was predeceased by her husband Jack Hall in 1992.

Cremation preceded the Funeral Service which was held at All Saints Anglican Church in Vernon, BC on April 4, 2012.

Mitchell Calvin Taylor, aged 51 years, of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away suddenly, Thursday, May 10, 2012.

Mitchell worked several jobs in Moose Jaw, most recently rooď&#x192;&#x17E;ng and at Carol's Catering. Mitch enjoyed ď&#x192;&#x17E;shing, playing music, gambling, sports, spending time with family and friends and mostly life itself.

He was predeceased by his mother, Leanore Taylor, commonlaw wife Joanne, stepdaughter Melanie, and father-in-law, Trevor Puschelberg as well as many other relatives.

Mitchell is survived by his wife Sharon; daughter Caitlin; step-children Melissa, Taryn, Conor, Chelsey and her daughter Chasity Rain; his father Gordon (Gayle) Taylor; brothers Alan (Barb) Taylor, Kevin (Toni) Taylor, all of Creston, BC, and Darrell (Sherryl) Taylor of Cranbrook, BC. He also leaves his niece, nephews and many aunts and uncles.

Cremation has taken place.

Dorothy Jean DeLauw of Creston, British Columbia passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the age of 73.

Dorothy is survived by two brothers, John (Marcia) Woodske, Tom (Pam) Woodske; two sisters, Donna (Doug) Molnes, JoAnne (Carl) Erven; two sons, Bill (Tammy) DeLauw; Mick (Kylie) DeLauw; four daughters, Wendy (Fred) Margy, Lindsey (Reb) Simmons, Teressa Woodske, Corrina Mynott, and many wonderful grandchildren.

She was predeceased by Bob (Rene) Woodske.

A Graveside Service for Dorothy will be held at Westlawn Cemetery at 11:00 am in Cranbrook on June 2, 2012.

A time of remembrance will follow in the Cranbrook Alliance Church Gymnasium, from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

Brent Cameron August 12, 1947 ~ May 20, 2012

Brent Cameron, visionary educator and founder of SelfDesign Learning Foundation, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 20, 2012 in the Kootenay Lake Hospital, Nelson BC, surrounded by family and close friends. He had been ill with prostate cancer for several years.

Brent was born in Calgary to Neil Cameron and Desley â&#x20AC;&#x153;Buntyâ&#x20AC;? Hyde and attended the University of Calgary in the 1960s. He worked as a teacher in Canal Flats, British Columbia. He married Maureen Gallagher and settled in Sirdar BC. Their daughter Ilana was born in 1977. Brent and Maureen started their own health food store, Pure Coincidence, which they operated in Creston for several years.

In 1983 they moved to Vancouver, where Brent founded Wondertree, an educational program, based on the principles of consensus and trust that supported learner's interests and emotional wellbeing.

Wondertree launched Brent on a journey of educational creativity, insight and vision. In 1993 he built on the concepts of Wondertree to create Virtual High, a learner-centered program for teens in a mansion in Vancouver.

In the years that followed, Brent used the internet to facilitate learning and link learners and mentors in creative and productive ways. He incorporated leading-edge insights from ď&#x192;&#x17E;elds as diverse as child development, neuroscience, and family theory, and created unique models that optimized our potential for learning.

In 2002 Brent launched SelfDesign Learning Community as an online, government-certiď&#x192;&#x17E;ed independent school with 10 colleagues and 100 learners.

Soon after, Brent partnered with River Meyer in writing his book, "SelfDesign: Nurturing Genius Through Natural Learning" and began giving presentations and building the foundation for a broader application of SelfDesign methodology.

In recent years, Brent worked tirelessly to support the growth and development of the SelfDesign Learning Foundation and SelfDesign programs for K-12 learners in BC and beyond. In 2006 Brent and his colleagues received a Prime Ministers award and a BC Ministry of Education award for their work in SelfDesign. In 2010 Brent received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Education. In the 20112012 school year SelfDesign enrolled close to 2,000 BC-based learners including those in remote locations, special needs learners and home-based learners.

With his passing Brent leaves his wife and SelfDesigning partner River, daughters Ilana and Lia, longtime collaborators and colleagues in his SelfDesign work, numerous close friends, and a wideranging community of supporters and people positively inď&#x192;&#x;uenced by his genius and generosity.

We wish to honour Brentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, legacy and his contribution to children, families and education with events in Sirdar, Nelson and Vancouver.

September 13, 1929 ~ May 10, 2012 Jim Brown, who was born and raised in Arrrowwood, AB, passed away at his home in Nanton, AB on May 10, 2012 at the age of 82 years.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Julia (nee Nelson); children Dennis (Sharon) Brown; Norma (Rod) Blake; Roy Brown (Cherie), Brian (Lori) Brown; grandchildren Chrystal (Justin) Strazza, Daniel Brown, Amber Brown (Eric), Riley (Karen) Blake, Curtis Blake (Erica), Andrea Blake, Leigha Brown, Tayler Brown, Kara Brown, Cayde Brown, Kolton Brown, and Carson Brown; great-grandchildren Brandon Larose, Shannon Larose, Caryssa Klassen, Ashtyn Klassen, Kaiden Brown, Kohen Brown, Kellan Brown, Dallyn Blake, and Warren Blake. Jim is also survived by his siblings Pete (Betsy) Brown; Bill Brown; Eleanor (Jack) Ward; brothers-in-law Melvin (Esther) Magnuson; Chris (Deanna) Nelson; sisters-in-law Dorothy Brown; Joan Nelson; Julie Nelson; Charlotte Nelson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was a well respected farmer but wore many other hats in his lifetime including trucker, grocery store owner/operator, commercial ď&#x192;&#x17E;sherman, realtor, crop adjuster, and motel owner/operator. The last motel owned until 2008 was the Hacienda in Creston, where he was simply and affectionately known as "JB". He was not afraid of hard work or trying new ventures. Jim had two main loves in his life -his family, and his land -and he took great pride in both. He coached hockey, and also supported 4-H, curling, golf, ď&#x192;&#x17E;gure skating, baseball, dance and whatever his kids and grandkids were involved in. He especially enjoyed the years he coached the Nanton Palominos and often talked of the post game parties they hosted. He enjoyed auction sales, gambling, his trips to the coffee shop each day, and took daily drives to the farm to check the crops and cattle. In the past few years, travel was not possible, but Jim and Julia had treasured memories of trips taken and especially loved their travels south to Yuma each winter.

Jim and Julia celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in November, 2011. Jim had a long full life, realized and surpassed his goals, and provided a great life for his family. Life will not be the same without him.

A Celebration of Jim's Life was held on May 15, 2012 at the Nanton Curling Club.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Dexter Murray Crawford announce his passing on Monday, May 21, 2012 Dexter was born December 9, 1941 in Creston, BC. Upon graduation from Prince Charles Secondary, he went to vocational school in Kelowna to get his diploma in Auto Body Repairs. He spent 34 years in the Okanagan until purchasing Grouse Mountain Variety in Yahk. His favorite past-time was ď&#x192;&#x17E;shing and camping and his sense of humor will be missed by his many friends which he made over the years.

Madeleine Marie (Desaulniers) Anderson May 22, 1924 ~ May 17, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Madeleine Marie (Desaulniers) Anderson on May 17, 2012 in Duncan BC, 5 days short of her 88th birthday.

Madeleine Marie Desaulniers was born in Lafond AB, May 22, 1924, fourth in a family of ten. Unfortunately their mother died giving birth to twin boys, leaving ten children without a mother. Needless to say, the older children looked after the younger children, helping to raise the family.

Madeleine joined the Air Force when she was 19 years old, and spent those war years at the Coast and on Vancouver Island. She lived most of her life in the Cariboo country, Prince George and Okanagan areas.

She worked for Canada Post for many years, was involved in the Women's Institute, Toastmistress club, Sons of Norway club, raced her own snowmobile, loved golď&#x192;&#x17E;ng, even managing a hole in one, and spent many happy hours camping with her family. She was very active, social and had a friendly, outgoing personality.

Madeleine's favourite times were the winters spent in Arizona after retirement, family gatherings and having fun with her grandchildren, who called her "Groovy Gran". She was a caring and generous grandmother, even treating her grandchildren to a trip to Disneyland many years ago.

Madeleine and her husband Colonel, lived in Creston for three years where her two daughters had retired.

She could be seen walking daily in her neighbourhood and the downtown area chatting with those who took the time.

She stayed very ď&#x192;&#x17E;t with regular walking, which enabled her to complete the West Creston Blue Heron Half Marathon l0 km walk two years in a row at 83 and 84 years old. She managed to jog in over the ď&#x192;&#x17E;nish line, giving a good showing for those in her 60 plus age class, and she received a medal both years.

Madeleine is survived by her husband of 61 years Colonel Anderson; daughters Marge Kennedy (Michael) and Geraldine Lee (Grant), of Creston; son Robert Anderson (Suzanne) of Duncan; 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Dwayne, Christopher, Dawn and Kenneth; 8 greatgrandchildren; three brothers (81 and 78 -twins) and one sister who will be 90 this summer.

A Celebration of Madeleine's Life will be held at a later date in Duncan.

We will miss her greatly but it was time to let her go.

Making dining out just a little bit easier It is now easier than ever to make healthy choices when dining out with the recent launch of the Province of British Columbia’s Informed Dining program.

Featuring more than 300 restaurant outlets in British Columbia, the program publishes nutritional information and allows diners to view the information in a format similar to that of a nutritional guide on products at the grocery store.

All you have to do is look for the Informed Dining logo at participating restaurants.

“British Columbians have made it clear they want information to help them make informed choices about what they and their families are eating,” says B.C. Minister of Health Mike de Jong. “With Informed Dining, we are partnering with B.C. restaurants to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.”

Some of the participating restaurants include chains such as The Boathouse, De Dutch, A&W and Little Caesar’s, and stand-alone restaurants such as H.A.V.E. Cafe in Vancouver, Mountain Eagle Books in Smithers and Joseph’s Coffee House in Victoria.

With people in British Columbia eating a meal in a restaurant approximately 10 per cent of the time, it’s never been more important to be able to source out healthy options.

With the new program, calorie and sodium information is prominently highlighted for all regular menu items, while other nutrients, including carbohydrates and fat, are also noted. The program also gives advice on daily calorie and

Excess weight can increase the risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and various cancers, so caloriecounting is an important part of a healthy diet. Eating too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and kidney disease, making sodium another important piece of the healthy eating puzzle.

“Healthy eating is a critical element in living a long and healthy life and avoiding cardiovascular disease,” says Gavin Arthur, vice-president of research and health promotion for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. “The Informed Dining program takes a positive step forward in providing people with information they can use in making informed choices while dining out.”

The program is voluntary, but the provincial government is

encouraging every restaurant to join the initiative and make such information available.

“We want to be part of the solution in making healthy choices, easy choices in B.C.,” says Vice-President of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association Mark von Schellwitz. “This program has the potential to help restaurant patrons become more conscious about what they are eating – it also shines a light on those establishments already providing menu nutrition content while encouraging other restaurants to follow suit.”

The provincial government has been working on this program since 2010, and has given restaurants several options for disclosing nutrition information, including a menu insert, a poster or a brochure.

“I am proud that we have about 300 outlets across the province signed up to participate in this important program,” says Ian Tostenson, CEO and president of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “I know that other business will continue to learn more about Informed Dining and sign up – this information is what our customers have been telling us they want, and it is our responsibility to provide it.”

The initiative is part of the Healthy Families BC campaign, created by the Province to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease.
