tanding in front of his peers and his Tseshaht First Nation electorate, Hugh Braker thought about how momentous an occasion it was to be sworn in as part of the nation’s new council.

Wearing a white shirt and traditional cedar head and chest bands, Braker, 59, signed his oath along with eight other council members at the Tseshaht cultural centre. With the stroke of his pen, Braker became his tribe’s new chief councillor.

Leading the Tseshaht brings Braker full circle, from the youth who was encouraged to go to school to help his people, to the lawyer who fought key aboriginal rights cases for them, to the man who now leads a new generation.

“I feel very honoured that our members elected me to council first,” Braker said in a telephone interview. “And I’m honoured that councillors have faith in my abilities to be chief councillor.”

The eight-member Tseshaht council elected Braker to be the tribe’s chief councillor in a process similar to how school board trustees elect their chair. The policy is part of the Tseshaht’s custom election code.

Also sworn into council for their first terms were Deb Foxcroft, Janice Johnson, Eunice Joe, Gina Pearson and John Gomez.

Returning to council are Les Sam, Dennis Bill and Boyd Gallic.

The arc of events leading to Braker taking office began nearly six decades ago in a nondescript house near the Paper Mill Dam. Braker is the eldest son of Tinus and Pauline Braker, and sibling to

Braker grew up on Georgia Road and remembers the family’s modest beginnings.

“Our first house didn’t have running water,” he said. “My parents worked hard to improve the family

economy over the years to afford us opportunities.”

Braker earned good marks in school, something that tribal leaders such as hereditary chief Adam Shewish, George Clutesi and Jake Gallic took notice of.

“And I couldn’t be where

I am today if it weren’t for my parents,” Braker said.

Though not a political scion per se, Braker counts his uncle George Watts, the late Nuu-chahnulth rights leader, among his mentors.

Braker’s grandmother was Hupacasath, and he counts her, as well as his late uncle and great grandmother in Hupacasath, as among those who influenced him during his impressionable years.

Braker left for university after high school but not with any forethought that he’d fight aboriginal rights cases. Instead, his undergraduate degree was

in international relations.

“My pie in the sky was that I wanted to become a member of Canada’s foreign service,” Braker said.

But the luminaries in Tseshaht coaxed him down a different path.

“Our elders said that I should go to school and help our people,” he said.

“That was a turn in my life.”

Braker took up and excelled at law. He earned his degree in 1983 and was called to the bar in 1984. He earned a Queen’s Counsel designation in 2000.

Braker has been one of the invisible people who helped create a blueprint for aboriginal rights by serving as counsel in court decisions that defined those rights.

The cases read like a whose-who of aboriginal rights: Harry Thomas Dick, an aboriginal rights hunting case; Jack, John and John, which helped establish consultation; NTC Smokehouse, a key aboriginal fishing rights case; and Delgamuukw, which confirmed aboriginal title.

It’s ironic that a man who was without aboriginal status until after 1985 helmed these aboriginal rights cases.

Braker’s mother and grandparents were Tseshaht. But his mother married a non-aboriginal man, and federal policy defacto stripped his mother of aboriginal

status, a convention at the time.

The Brakers and other aboriginal women and children later gained their aboriginal status back, but according to Hugh the only thing that changed was an extra card in his wallet.

“Our tribe included us in communal fish days, community activities and even band meetings,” Braker said. “We were part of the community while growing up and weren’t excluded.”

He reserved his contempt for the policy for the federal government, and channelled it to effect change. “That steeled me a bit and was in part why I turned to a career in aboriginal law.”

He serves on several public bodies. He’s president of the Native Courtworkers and Counselling Association of B.C., an appointee to the New Relationship Trust, and an adjudicator with the Huu-ay-aht First Nation dispute resolution process.

His experience is rounded and not parochial, and imbued him with the gravitas for his new posting.

He’s served on the Law Society of B.C. and the B.C. Health Care and Care Facility Review Board.

Those experiences taught him the ability to decipher financial statements as well as how to draft policies, skills he hopes to transpose over the new body he heads.

“It’s a benefit because I learned skills that I might not otherwise have learned,” Braker said. “I hope it helps us.”

Participating in the micro world of tribe politics seems like a reverse step for someone who has been involved in the macro world of the same.

Upbeat, productive and moving forward is how Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas described a meeting between civic, corporate and union leaders and B.C. Premier Christy Clark.

Douglas was part of a delegation of municipal,

labour and business officials that met with Clark Tuesday afternoon in Victoria about the future of Catalyst Paper.

Also in attendance were Catalyst CEO Kevin Clarke, deputy finance minister Peter Milburn and former finance minister Colin Hansen, who will deal with the three affected coastal communities and unions.

“It was a confidential meeting and I can’t comment in detail except to say that it was productive,” Douglas said.

The paper giant employs 1,700 people in Port Alberni, Powell River and Crofton. In creditor protection since January, Catalyst is being forced to sell its assets after its unsecured creditors nixed a restructuring plan last

week.

Catalyst this year owes $4.2 million in industrial taxes to Port Alberni, payment of which is due on July 3.

According to Douglas, Clark signalled that her government would work on behalf of pensioners and employees through the pending crisis.

The matter of employee pensions was discussed,

Douglas said. Pensioners stand to lose out if Catalyst is sold, said Gary McCaig, chair of the Catalyst Salaried Employees and Pensioners group.

Port Alberni City Council on Monday supported a request from McCaig and Peter Finch to ask Catalyst to hold a second vote on its restructuring plan.

Douglas said he passed that request on to Clark.

North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure stressed there was no request by Catalyst for a bailout.

Instead, ideas were mulled about ways to reduce hydro rates and provincial sales taxes at Catalyst’s mills.

From / 3 But helping lead the Tseshaht is a way of repaying a solemn debt to the late leaders and mentors that once encouraged him, Braker said.

Braker doesn’t hesitate when asked what his vision is for Tseshaht: an economically and culturally thriving community with an increased educational attainment level.

Budget monitoring, debt control and

more prudent asset acquisition were cornerstones in Braker’s campaign platform.

But the issue of improved communication with tribe members — which Braker exercised as soon as the election was over — was a mainstay in it.

Braker posted his first report to members via Facebook and said he intends to use the

site and the tribe’s webpage as portals through which to talk to members.

“A lot of our members don’t have computers though and I’m mindful that communication with them has to be on a more personal level,” he said.

Braker straddles two worlds: the Tseshaht culture bequeathed by the ancestors of his mother and the nonaboriginal influences of his father.

Braker hopes that non-aboriginal people in the Alberni Valley can be as at ease with their Tseshaht neighbours as he is with his nonaboriginal side.

“There’s enough economic opportunity for all people.

We want good relations between Tseshaht and the citizens of the Valley,” Braker said.

“Ultimately, it’s to everyone’s benefit.”

Literacy Alberni’s Richard Girling, 29, was born in the town of Chelmsford, Essex County, England, a town about the same size as Nanaimo, he said.

Girling is one of six children, and has two brothers and three sisters. “I’m the

second of six,� the married father of two said.

Girling attended elementary and high school in Suffolk, England. His favourite subjects were German and English and his favourite teacher was Mr. Heath, who taught German. “He was a younger,

Girling said. “He made learning fun and inspired us to do well.�

Growing up, Girling didn’t want to be a digger man or a bus driver, and in later years he never aspired to be a doctor or lawyer. Instead, he wanted to do something to make the world a better place, he said.

He studied German and English at the University of Durham after graduating from high school then worked in Austria as part of a placement program for one year afterward.

Girling moved to Poland afterward. He taught English during the day but also learned Polish at the same time to quench his growing thirst with other languages.

It was during his stay in Poland that Girling’s events took a turn that would alter his life forever.

He would meet his bride-to-be Erin, who was staying with her brother in Poland. “I guess you could call it a random geography tale,� Girling said.

to London, then to Florida for two years where they operated a yoga studio and vegetarian cafĂŠ.

The pair wanted more of a family life but couldn’t do it working 80 hours a week at their business so they planned a move.

Erin is originally from Victoria so they decided on the Island and settled on Port Alberni after finding a listing on craigslist. com. The two arrived in 2009.

more remote than they thought at first; something that Girling changed his mind about later. “I enjoy being surrounded by nature and Sproat Lake so it was a good decision to move here,� he said.

He worked for a marketing company the first year he was here, but kept his interest in language satiated by tutoring at the literacy centre. “It can be different living in a new system even when you speak the language,� Girling

said. “I understood that from living in Poland.�

Don’t get burned by new bylaw WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

If you burn wood in old woodstoves, you’re eventually going to get burned.

Port Alberni City Council passed three readings of its new bylaw to regulate emissions from solid fuel burning appliances at its Monday meeting.

They bylaw specifies only untreated, noncontaminated, and seasoned wood with a moisture content of 20 per cent or less is considered acceptable for burning.

They bylaw has a

grace period. People with devices that don’t comply with the new standard can use them until May 31, 2017, providing that they meet safety standards.

Inspectors may enter and inspect any premises where burning is being conducted to determine if the bylaw is being complied with.

Homeowners not compliant after the grace period will be subject to a $200 fine per day for every day that it is in use.

Hydro move raises queries Scenes from the trenches on the farm The provincial government has done a good thing in scaling back B.C. Hydro rate increases. The way it is doing so raises more questions than answers.

On Tuesday, Energy Minister Rich Coleman announced that the government was cancelling a B.C. Utilities Commission hearing into Hydro rate increases, which have already been scaled back from the 50 per cent premium increases which were initially proposed about two years ago, under former premier Gordon Campbell.

At that time, the rate increases were suggested to allow for introduction of smart meters, purchase of private power and major capital expenses, including turbine installation at several dams and other upgrades.

When Coleman was named energy minister under new Premier Christy Clark, she asked that he review Hydro’s plans.

The review said that the smart meter program should stay, and that other projects should proceed, but also said that rates didn’t need to go up as steeply.

Hydro then asked for an eight per cent increase in 2012, 3.91 per cent in 2013 and 3.91 per cent in 2014. Planned increases were 9.73 per cent each year.

Last week, Coleman said Hydro received an eight per cent increase in 2011 and a 3.91 per cent increase in 2012, along with a rate rider of five per cent. The government is now saying it wants a 1.44 per cent increase in 2013, making the rate increase 17 per cent over three years.

There was no word of what is planned in 2014 or beyond.

It all raises these questions. Why is there a B.C. Utilities Commission if the government can simply override its mandate and role?

ICTORIA – With ongoing pipeline and oil tanker skirmishes, and a hot summer for mining and logging still to come, the green war in B.C. shows no signs of slowing down.

Things are already hot in the Fraser Valley, where the federal government’s change to the definition of fish habitat has opened a new front on the farms.

Farmers briefly got into the public discussion by hauling a couple of cute calves into downtown Vancouver and staging a television-friendly demo in front of the federal fisheries office. They have been saying for decades that imposing salmon stream regulations on drainage ditches around their fields is impractical.

Fraser Valley Conservative MPs Randy Kamp and Mark Strahl even had the nerve to meet with local mayors to

hear their concerns about B.C.’s most productive farmland, without inviting self-appointed “activists.”

Arrayed against them is an environmental lobby whose deep green wing was defined by Marvin Rosenau, a former provincial biologist who now teaches “fish, wildlife and recreation technology” at BCIT. “Mark Strahl is leading the charge of ecofascists intent on making the last dime off the backs of the last remnants of an absolutely spectacular ecosystem,” Rosenau told the Chilliwack Progress.

“A massive and productive floodplain of fish and aquatic values … has been drained, ditched, tiled and laser-leveled for agricultural profit.”

The same could be said for the broad fields of Richmond and Pitt Polder farms north of

the Fraser, a wetland diked and drained by Dutch settlers after the Second World War. Farms are “industrializing the landscape,” said Rosenau, who stopped short of calling for them all to be shut down.

At the provincial level we have a new Animal Health Act, which threatens heavy fines or even jail time for prematurely leaking reports of serious animal disease outbreaks.

This was also portrayed as a jack-booted sellout of the public’s right to know, putting the business interests of land and ocean farms ahead of public safety.

Canadian beef was banned in 30 countries after a single infected cow was identified in Alberta in 2003.

B.C. Agriculture Minister Don McRae assures me this legislation will not result in reporters or environmental activists being thrown in jail for telling the public about sick animals. They and the farmers themselves can say all they want, once infections are confirmed and quarantines established. McRae and Paul Kitching, B.C.’s chief veterinarian, pleaded for the public to understand that any farm reporting system must rely on voluntary compliance by farmers.

When the B.C. government took the advice of B.C. Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham and began releasing fish farm inspection data in 2010, the operators stopped providing samples voluntarily.

Power tripping From / 8 The fish farmers’ position was that you can have a co-operative system of farm inspections or one that’s imposed, but not both.

Imposing inspections on land farms across B.C.’s vast area is even less practical. Former Alberta premier Ralph Klein famously observed that the next rancher to find a possible mad cow should have “shot, shoveled and shut up” rather than file a report and devastate the industry.

Denham, the NDP and others appear to operate under an assumption that there should be sufficient government resources to sample and inspect every farm across B.C. for reportable contagious illnesses.

This is similar to the fashionable notion that we should have enough park rangers to guard every cedar tree.

To the Editor, Contrary to what is being reported in some media, it is still legally possible for Catalyst to put forward a revised restructuring plan.

And with a first vote failing by the narrowest of margins there is a good chance that a second attempt could succeed.

But for this to happen the company must act quickly.

The alternative is a sales precess that immediately creates a 35 per cent pension loss for 1500 salaried pensioners, and an uncertain future for employees, customers and suppliers.

In recent months Catalyst has gone to unions, workers, pensioners and municipalities for concessions aimed at supporting a successful restructuring and every one of these groups has stepped up to the plate. So Catalyst has an obligation to do its best to bring this about, and not to throw in the towel after the first setback.

Unless that happens their supporters will quite logically feel betrayed.

Catalyst executives will collect almost $8 million in bonuses if the company is sold.

Others are not so lucky; they should not take this lying down.

Bulldogs deal bad timing To the Editor, Re: Bulldogs give community hope, says proponent, Letters, May 24.

In response to Tom McEvay’s letter, several points need to be made.

First, although it’s true that the Okanagan Hockey Schools is prepared to sell the Bulldogs, team president Andy Oakes stated on April 20, that “there is no danger of the team moving anywhere.”

The chances of the team moving in time for the 2012-2013 season are zero, and any sale of the team before 2013 is highly unlikely, especially since any sale has to be approved by the league.

Secondly, with the local economy in poor shape and with Catalyst Paper’s future in question, this wasn’t the time to ask for financial support for a highly risky venture and to

set such a ridiculously short fundraising period.

As of May 25, less than half the amount required to purchase the Bulldogs had been raised, and the society made no provision for raising money for operating costs, as I suggested to the key directors. They appear to have grossly overestimated the local support for the team, to say nothing of poor arithmetic.

To raise $100,000 in the Founder’s Club, there would have to be 20 donors at $5,000 each (as of May 25, they had 1). Even with 20 members in the Founder’s Club, the society would need 2,000 donations of $200 each in the Donor class.

Mr. McEvay’s comment that he isn’t naive rings hollow in the light of the facts.

Yet he obviously had support.

Lastly, the society obviously expected that a huge surge of public support for the team and a huge fear of losing the team would have $500,000 roll in in a period of about six weeks. They obviously grossly overestimated the enthusiasm of the general public for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the

ability of fans to donate money in harsh economic times.

Bending over backwards To the Editor, My back was sore to the point of only sitting or standing without pain.

Since both physiotherapists and chiropractors were closed for weekend, I resorted to pain tablets to stay mobile and lessen the pain.

When pain decreased, I tried stretching exercises. I couldn’t do most of them at first but persisted until I could and recovered in three weeks. This was faster than in three months of a doctor’s care, 40 years ago when surgery was advised.

Since half of the back patients in Victoria hospital in the 1970s were still in pain months after operation, I declined surgery and returned to 30 years of painfree logging, until this incident.

I’m not selling anything but only wish that someone had told me about these stretch exercises 30 years ago.

Pests aren’t real problem

To the Editor, Re: Premier bitten by pest of a problem, B.C. Views, May 24.

I enjoyed Tom Fletcher’s column on the hysterical reactions to any chemical use. With regard to Roundup, this compound is a very specific inhibitor of an enzyme unique to photosynthesis.

Therefore it affects only photosynthesizing organisms, typically green plants.

It has even gone through phase one clinical trials (which test safety for humans) because there was some idea that it might help with arthritis. No such luck. In other words, you could drink the stuff with no ill effect.

When Oak Bay council proposed banning all “pesticides” including Roundup, I wrote them pointing out these facts. To no avail; they just went along with the herd.

Well, keep up the good work of speaking truth to ignorance. It might eventually help.

John Paul II plans family fun fair John Paul II school is offering families a trip around the world — in three hours.

The school has planned a public fun fair for Friday, June 8 from 5–8 p.m. The multicultural themed event is a fundraiser for new playground equipment.

Dylan Haugen grew up playing minor hockey in Port Alberni and cheering for the B.C. Hockey League’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

He looked up to players like Tyler Ruel and Devin Timberlake, homegrown talent who enjoyed modest success in the BCHL before moving on to post-secondary hockey careers.

Next season, Haugen will take his own place in Bulldogs’ history when he dons the coveted red jersey. The Bulldogs announced this week that they have signed Haugen for the 2012-13 season.

“It means a lot to me,” Haugen, 18, said on Tuesday. “I’ve always wanted to play with the Bulldogs when I was growing up. Ever since they came here.”

Haugen has suited up with the Bulldogs in the past, spending 14 games on the ice as an affiliated player last season while also a member of the Oceanside Generals in Parksville. But it wasn’t the same.

As a 16-year-old in his 201011 rookie campaign with the Generals, Haugen appeared in 44 regular season games and eight playoff games.

“The Bulldogs are very pleased to have hometown prospect Dylan Haugen commit to us for next season,” Bulldogs head coach

The Alberni District Secondary School Armada girls’ rugby team capped off a successful season in fairytale fashion: winning the provincial Tier 2 championship in overtime, against a familiar rival.

“This is the first time in the ADSS girls’ rugby program history that our team has made it to the finals, and the first BC championship title,” a proud coach Ryan Hall said.

Games took place at the Capilano Rugby Club in North Vancouver. The Armada opened the tournament with a 35–5 win over North Burnaby.

They dominated ball possession to keep command of the game.

On Friday they faced Mt. Boucherie from Kelowna. Both were evenly matched, with strong forward packs, but ADSS came out on top with a 15–12 win. That vaulted them into the championship game on Saturday against Shawnigan Lake, a team they have faced many times in Island league play.

The game was a defensive battle.

Shawnigan scored within the first 10 minutes of the game and led until the last play in the half when Armada Rachel Hansen punched through and scored for Alberni, tying the game 5–5.

Alberni took the lead halfway through the second half with a try from Keanna Mullen, but Shawnigan answered back with a score of their own and at the end of regulation time the score was tied 10–10. This led to a five-minute, sudden death overtime.

The Armada were able to maintain ball possession off the kickoff and through sheer grit and determination was able to pound the ball up the field. With two minutes in overtime, Bailey Durning broke free and scored the winning try. The final score was 15–10 for Alberni.

“It was the cherry on top of the season,” said Hansen, a Gr. 12 player who made the President’s 15, the top 15 players of the tournament.

Hansen and Keanna Mullen (Gr. 11), Armada co-captains, both caught the eye of college and university scouts at the provincial tourney.

The Armada had a strong team with a lot of depth this year, Hall said. They started with a roster of 35 and ended with a roster of 32. Only 15 girls are on the field at a time.

“A coach couldn’t ask for 30 better girls,” Hall said.

t’s that time of year again when we see an increase in people enjoying the outdoors. After a winter of hibernation for many, the longer, warmer days become a good time to get more active and explore what beauty lies all around us in the Alberni Valley.

For many people, over the winter, an extra few pounds (or 10) of weight may be an annoying reality of their less active

winter lifestyle.

It’s amazing how a few more snacks or bigger portions at meals over time can add up to needing a larger pant size and/ or punching another hole in the belt buckle.

Overeating during holidays and special occasions, snacking at night, skipping breakfast and mindless nibbling can all contribute to the accumulation of fat.

Long-term weight gain (especially increases in body fat) may be more than just a nuisance, it can be a negative strike against your future health. Diabetes, heart

Walking around the street where you live or circling around a track, such as Bob Dailey Stadium are other ways to get yourself moving on a more regular basis.

Suggestions for healthy snacks to take along for an outdoor excursion could include trail mix (with seeds, nuts and dried fruit), a piece of fruit, yogurt drink, veggies and hummus, a sandwich wrap or cheese with rye crisps. Remember to always keep hydrated by drinking lots of water and other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids throughout the day.

reater Tuna, an award-winning play by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, is a tour de farce of quick change artistry, with multiple characterizations and costume changes.

What Portal Players Dramatic Society director Peter Wienold didn’t know is how true-to-life the play would become for Port Alberni’s amateur theatre troupe.

Greater Tuna has been on the backburner for Portal Players for a number of years; something the Players wanted to perform, but never found the right opportunity to bring it to stage. That changed this spring, when the Players had to cancel their final selection of the 2011-12 season, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. This was doubly disappointing because the play was to be the troupe’s entry into the 2012 North Island Zone Drama Festival in Courtenay.

“We regrouped and we put this play together,” Wienold said.

Greater Tuna plays three more dates: May 31, June 1–2 at the Capitol Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Rollin Art Centre, online at www. atthecapitol.org or at the box office.

A two-person play, Greater Tuna is a withering satire and affectionate comment on

small-town Southern life and attitudes. It takes place in Greater Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas. Greater Tuna, one of four plays in a series, debuted in Austin, Texas in 1981 and premiered off Broadway in 1982.

“The play is a dark comedy,” Wienold said.

“It has a bit of a farce element in that it has a lot of quick costume changes.”

Greater Tuna was heralded as the return

of Elliot Drew working with Scott Lowe. Each actor would portray 10 characters, the men and women of Greater Tuna.

Rehearsals began in February, with Drew and Lowe getting to know their characters as well as their lines. “It was really challenging at the beginning to get the characters down and flesh them out,” said Drew. Although some of the characters only appear briefly in

the performance, they need to be fully realized characters, each distinct from the other.

“It was a huge challenge, especially because in two pages you play four characters,” he said.

“In the beginning you would start a voice and after awhile the characters would all meld into one voice.”

Rehearsals were gelling when Lowe had to leave the production with just three weeks left until the drama festival.

Portal Players was faced with a decision: cancel the production altogether, or replace Lowe.

“Not doing it wasn’t really an option,” Wienold said. “Our club is very strong at the festival level.”

They regrouped—again.

Wienold, who was directing and producing Greater Tuna, and

Terry Switzer, the stage manager, split Lowe’s characters, figuring it would be easier to learn five characters each in such a short time. They were both familiar with the script.

Lucky for Wienold, one of the biggest parts Lowe had was playing a radio announcer. Wienold spent 20 years working for CJAV and a station in Nanaimo—as a radio announcer.

“It was easy for me to slot myself into that spot,” he said.

Switzer is a seasoned actor, having last appeared in Nude With Violins in February 2010. As stage manager he was already familiar with the script when he agreed to take on his new role, but he still had to learn his lines. “I had to sit down with each character and full out learn the lines that were required,” he said.

“Many of my evenings and weekends were taken up.”

Switzer continued to stage manage the production as well, saying he was thankful the cast was small. “When we ran into problems everyone kicked in a bit to make sure things ran smoothly.”

“For me, the festival performance was really different this time around. I didn’t feel any pressure whatsoever,” Wienold said. “The response we got up there made it that much more satisfying.”

back with four awards, including best male actor for Drew, best costumes, best backstage co-ordination and a certificate of merit for props for Denis Levasseur.

The quick costume changes really make this play, says Drew.

Girling’s greatest inspiration was his father Jonathan, who was a selfless man, he said. “I remember watching how much he enjoyed watching other people enjoy it,” Girling said.

“I still enjoy it when we get together but it’s harder now that we’re spread out.”

He’s reading Steve Jobbs: A Biography, and his favourite book is Animal Farm. “You notice things in the book that are in the world around you,” Girling said.

Girling watches movies several times a week, and counts Shawshank Redemption and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

“I like movies with irony in them,” he said.

If he could visit another time period it would be before the West Coast was colonized.

“Mistakes were made and it would be nice to go back and do things differently,” he said.

The best advice Girling knows of isn’t something he was told but rather something he learned on his own.

“Try not to get too frustrated by the things you can’t change,” he said.

“People spend a lot of time stressing over the things they can’t change.”

Girling has sought to make the world a better place and in his own way he has, he said. “So long as I’m doing that I’ll be happy.”
